Maharashtra Govt To Launch Drone-Based Vigilance To Curb Illegal Fishing

The MahaYuti government in Maharashtra will implement a drone-based monitoring and digital data maintenance mechanism for fishing vessels on January 9 in a serious bid to prevent illegal fishing and implement the state’s Marine Fishing Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2021.

Newly appointed Minister of Fisheries Nitesh Rane said on Friday that nine drones have been made available on lease for the state’s maritime district, including two units each in Raigad and Ratnagiri and one each in Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Mumbai Suburban. A control room will be established in the office of the Commissioner of Fisheries. The minister said the department’s vessels conduct patrolling, but the patrol boats can’t inspect every boat. “Unauthorised boats often escape, and they are difficult to catch. The drone monitoring system will effectively curb illegal fishing,” he added.

Shiv Sena legislator and former MP Nilesh Rane raised the issue of illegal fishing and the menace of unauthorised boats in Ratnagiri and other coastal districts of the state in the state assembly during the winter session. He urged the state government to take stern action. According to the Fisheries Department office, the Fisheries Act aims to protect the interests of the state’s traditional fishing community and curb illegal fishing by migrant fishermen.

Earlier, the Maharashtra Maritime Board had thought of launching drone-based monitoring to keep an eye on illegal fishing activities after traditional fishing communities from Uttan, Vasai and other coastal areas in the state had alleged that the big players were not following the annual monsoon fishing ban imposed along the coastline. A deep sea fishing ban is imposed every year to allow fish to breed and repopulate the water. A 61-day marine fishing ban is imposed along the state’s coastal region from June 1 till July 31.

Karnataka Cong Won’t Succeed In Finishing Off JD(S): HD Kumaraswamy

Karnataka Cong Won't Succeed In Finishing Off JD(S): HD Kumaraswamy

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy said on Friday that Congress won’t succeed in ‘Operation Hast,’ which is “designed to finish off” the JD(S) in Karnataka. Addressing media in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy, the Karnataka JD(S) Chief said: “The Congress is plotting to finish off our party by trying to lure 12 or 13 MLAs. I am aware of all these conspiracies. We know what the Congress is up to. Their sins are piling up, and divine justice will eventually punish them.”

Expressing confidence over his MLAs’ loyalty, he said: “They are informing me of Congress’ activities. We know how to safeguard our party. The JD(S) cannot be shaken or weakened by anyone.” Slamming the Congress government for its “unfulfilled” guarantee schemes, the leader said: “There’s a race to announce unrealistic schemes. Look at what has happened in Himachal Pradesh after similar guarantees. Congress MLAs and ministers must question their conscience, observe what is happening in the state, and think about the direction in which you are taking Karnataka.” The Union Minister said that instead of unveiling new development initiatives, the government has announced price hikes.

Comparing the governance in the state with the previous dispensation, he said, “Earlier, price hikes were made only when necessary. Adjustments were also made to reduce prices when possible. But this government’s mismanagement has placed the entire burden on the people. It has taken every problem onto itself and is making the public pay the price.” Expressing displeasure over the bus fare hike, he said: “The government has increased bus fares by 15 per cent placing a heavy burden on the people. While the public is expressing outrage, they’ve also grown accustomed to it. They protest for two days and then forget about it, adjusting to the higher fares. This is the reality.”

He said, “This same Congress government imposed a cess on diesel and petrol. Did people protest? No, they adjusted to it. They increased stamp duty, guidance values, liquor prices, and now even milk prices are set to be hiked There’s talk of water tariffs going up next.” Responding to questions from the media, Kumaraswamy said, “The names of Nikhil (his son) and Anita Kumaraswamy (wife) have been mentioned in the cheating case involving one Aishwarya Gowda. I know who is behind this.” “It is clear how much investigation is taking place under this government. They must reveal when the accused Aishwarya Gowda met Nikhil and Anita. They have not even seen her face,” Kumaraswamy said.

10 Kerala CPI-M Activists Get Double Life Term; Ex-MLA Gets 5 Years’ Jail For Murder Of 2 Cong Workers

10 Kerala CPI-M Activists Get Double Life Term; Ex-MLA Gets 5 Years’ Jail For Murder Of 2 Cong Workers

A CBI court here on Friday sentenced 10 CPI-M workers to a double life term and four others including a former party legislator to five years’ imprisonment in the Periya twin murder case in Kerala. On Saturday last, the CBI court had convicted 14 people and exonerated 10 in the case pertaining to the brutal murders of Kerala Youth Congress workers Kripesh (19) and P.K. Sarath Lal (24) on February 17, 2019, in Periya, Kasaragod district.

However, the families of the victims said they were expecting capital punishment for the accused. Since that has not been given and 10 others were exonerated, they will speak with the Congress leadership and appeal against the verdict. CPI-M workers allegedly killed the victims in a politically motivated attack. According to the court, eight of the accused were directly involved in the twin murders, while six others played indirect roles. The court gave a double-life term to the eight who were directly involved in the cold-blooded murder, while two others who were part of the conspiracy were also given a double-life term. Among the convicted is former MLA and CPI-M district leader K.V. Kunhiraman, accused of forcibly removing the second accused from police custody.

Kunhiraman has been given five years’ imprisonment. Initially investigated by the Crime Branch, the case was handed over to the CBI after the victims’ families filed a plea in the High Court. The CBI concluded that the murders stemmed from a cycle of politically-motivated attacks between CPI-M and Congress workers in the region. At Periya in Kasargod there was a huge gathering of Congress party workers and family members of the two victims at their memorial site. After hearing the verdict, some of the women of the two workers’ families were seen in tears. Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan while talking about the verdict said it was notable that among the accused are a former CPI-M legislator and workers. “All along, the CPI-M leadership and party denied their leader’s and party workers’ role in the brutal crime. Now see, they have been sentenced. This is the way the CPI-M works,” said Satheesan.

K.K. Rema, an independent legislator who won with the Congress-led UDF’s support, whose husband, T.P. Chandrasekharan, was also murdered by CPI-M workers, criticised the party’s attempts to protect the accused. “Just look at the way the CPI-M employed high priced lawyers from Delhi to fight the case and more than Rs 1 crore have been spent to save the guilty,” said Rema. AICC general secretary and Alappuzha Congress Lok Sabha member, K.C. Venugopal, said the verdict brings out the real face of the CPI-M as they engage in annihilating political opponents.

The counsel for the accused said once the papers of the verdict come, they will file an appeal against it. The 10 accused, who have been sentenced to the double life term, will each have to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh, while the remaining four have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, and all of this will go to the families of the two victims.

Maldives ‘Concrete Expression’ Of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy: EAM Jaishankar

Maldives 'Concrete Expression' Of India's 'Neighbourhood First' Policy: EAM Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Friday said that the Maldives remains a “concrete expression” of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. New Delhi has always stood by the Indian Ocean archipelago, especially when it comes to providing financial support during challenging times.

“We have increased our engagements in various sectors, and I want to emphasise that India has always stood by the Maldives. You are a concrete expression of our ‘Neighborhood First’ policy,” said EAM Jaishankar during his meeting with Abdulla Khaleel, the visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives at New Delhi’s Hyderabad House on Friday. Both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementation of High Impact Community Development Projects under Phase-III in Maldives through grant assistance by the Government of India and also took stock of progress made on the understandings reached during the State Visit of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu in October 2024, following-up on issues that need further focus. “I believe we have some important and positive developments to report, and certainly, there is much more that we need to do. I see that the framework to promote the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions has been signed. We have increased our engagements in various sectors,” said Jaishankar in his opening remarks at the start of bilateral discussions.

Khaleel, on his part, appreciated the timely emergency financial assistance extended by India to Maldives in times of need, reflecting India’s role as the “First Responder” of Maldives. He reaffirmed Muizzu government’s firm commitment to work closely with the Government of India in realising the Joint Vision for India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. Highlighting that the three-day India visit is his first bilateral engagement of the year, he mentioned that 2025 is an important year for Maldives-India relations as both countries celebrate 60 years of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations.

“Our partnership dates back to centuries. Our partnership is built on mutual understanding, respect and a shared commitment. Rooted in decades of trust and friendship, it will continue to thrive… As a beneficiary of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, the government of Maldives deeply values the significant importance India placed in its relationship with the Maldives. We have many examples where the Government of India has consistently stood by the Maldives as an immediate responder in times of need,” he said. “We always appreciate India for its timely assistance, particularly through grant and concessional loans. On the development front, assistance from India has been transformative. The Greater Male Connectivity Project is a shining example that is set to transform the economic landscape of the Maldives,” Khaleel added.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister’s visit, stated Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), is part of continued high-level engagements between the two sides and has provided an opportunity to further deepen the bilateral ties for the mutual benefit of two countries and the Indian Ocean Region considering the importance India attaches to its bilateral ties with Maldives under India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and Vision SAGAR, or the Security and Growth for All in the Region. Khaleel was appointed as Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs on September 30, last year by Muizzu. Prior to the appointment, he was serving as the country’s Minister of Health and acknowledged that the “significant contribution” to his tourist-dependent country’s fast recovery from the Covid pandemic was from India.

In October, Khaleel also accompanied Muizzu on the “landmark” five-day State visit – the first by the Maldivian President since assuming office in November 2023. This visit, he said, was defined by “insightful discussions” and deepened partnership, marking yet another milestone in the enduring friendship between Maldives and India.

“Our Commitment to further enhance the Maldives-India partnership remains unwavering, and I look forward to our promising future collaborations for the mutual benefit of our two nations and peoples,” Khaleel posted on X on October 10 after the conclusion of the visit. Both countries also adopted a ‘Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’ which will guide the bilateral relationship across various sectors, during Muizzu’s visit.

Thanjavur: Arabic Teacher Ziauddin Who Sexually Harassed Girl For 3 Years Arrested Under POCSO, Survivor Files Complaint Over Death Threats From Culprit's Acquaintances

A Muslim student, who is a victim in a sexual harassment case involving an Arabic teacher named Ziauddin, has approached the DIG office in Thanjavur district to file a petition, alleging that the individuals involved in the case have been threatening her to withdraw the charges.

In 2021, a student at a private college near Kumbakonam accused Ziauddin, an Arabic teacher at the college, of sexually assaulting her over a span of three years. Even after she completed her studies, Ziauddin allegedly continued to threaten and harass her. The young woman has filed a complaint against six individuals, including Ziauddin. While Ziauddin has been arrested in connection with the POCSO case, the victim claims that the others involved have been threatening to kill her if she does not withdraw the case.

The victim stated to the press, “I have filed a complaint against six individuals, including the management and the main accused, Ziauddin. However, only he has been remanded, and the other five have not faced any consequences. They have only remanded him as others are wealthy. The others who are free outside continue to threaten us with murder every day. Ten to fifteen goons come to our home daily. We are not lying; we have CCTV evidence to prove.”
