“Only After Annamalai, People Noticed BJP In TN”: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram Makes Surprise Praise

In a surprising turn, Sivaganga Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has praised Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai during a recent interview. He remarked that, regardless of personal opinions or policy differences, Annamalai has undeniably drawn public attention to the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that under previous leaders like Tamilisai Soundararajan, Pon Radhakrishnan, and C.P Radhakrishnan, the party did not receive the same level of recognition. This statement has since gone viral, especially in light of recent speculations about a potential leadership change within the Tamil Nadu BJP.

Tamil Nadu Congress Struggles in Tamil Nadu

Karti candidly admitted that the Congress party has been in decline in Tamil Nadu, ranking around fifth or sixth in terms of voter support. He pointed out that since 2014, there has been no independent assessment of Congress’s electoral strength in the state, and if anything, its influence has diminished rather than grown. He acknowledged that Congress’s victories have largely depended on alliances, and he wishes for the party to regain strength independently—though he is skeptical about the leadership’s willingness to take bold steps in that direction.

Karti Chidambaram said, “Today, my honest assessment, as far as I am concerned, is that the Congress party is the fifth or sixth (most significant) party in Tamil Nadu. This is a debatable point because we have not contested independently, and our true vote strength has not been tested since 2014. It is likely at that level or has declined slightly, but it could not have grown significantly. Given the crowded political landscape, what does the future for the party? We cannot offer great hope. We are winning solely by relying on alliances, and I wish for that to change. It does not have to be me who does this—someone else can do it. However, I don’t see anyone else thinking outside the box or make the necessary effort.”

Discussing the political landscape, Karti noted that parties in Tamil Nadu have historically gained prominence by establishing a unique presence rather than relying on alliances. He cited actor Vijay’s recent political foray as an example, stating that although Vijay has a strong fanbase, his party has gained traction because of his dramatic public statements.

Similarly, he emphasized that the BJP in Tamil Nadu only gained significant attention after Annamalai took charge. Prior to his leadership, the party struggled to make an impact despite the efforts of previous leaders. He also criticized the Tamil Nadu Congress for lacking fresh, articulate leaders who can effectively engage with the public.

Karti Chidambaram said, “Whether we like it or not, I am ideologically opposed to the BJP, but it was only after Annamalai’s arrival that people started noticing the party. When Tamilisai, Pon Radhakrishnan, or C.P. Radhakrishnan were in charge, the party did not attract much attention. People want energetic and outspoken leaders, and being candid is an added advantage. That kind of energetic candor has not been displayed by anyone in the Tamil Nadu Congress for a long time.”

Karti also expressed doubt about the party’s ability to reclaim its position in Tamil Nadu’s political arena. He admitted that while he believes he could bring a new dynamic to the party, he has little expectation of being given the responsibility of leading Tamil Nadu Congress. He concluded by stating that the party faces an uphill battle in the state, as the political field continues to become more competitive.

Vijay Lacks Ideological Clarity, Mirrors Dravidian Politics

Commenting on actor-turned-politician Vijay, Karti Chidambaram remarked that Vijay has yet to establish a clear ideological stance. He pointed out that, for now, Vijay appears to align with typical Dravidian party positions, such as opposing the National Education Policy (NEP). However, Karti acknowledged that Vijay brings a certain momentum to the political scene due to his film background and strong fanbase.

Karti said, “Today, Vijay has also launched a party, but its ideological clarity is still lacking. Some positions are beginning to take shape, but it is clear that their politics fully align with Dravidian ideology. They are opposing schemes like NEP and delimitation in line with all major political parties. They have not introduced any different approach or any distinct ideology.”

“Is There Governance Here Or A Dictatorship?”: EPS Slams DMK Over Attack On YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar’s Home

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and the AIADMK staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly after being denied permission to speak on the recent attack on the house of YouTuber Savukku Shankar. Addressing a press conference later, EPS strongly condemned the incident and criticized the ruling DMK for its alleged inaction.

Attack On Savukku Shankar’s Home

EPS detailed the events of March 24, 2025, when a mob of about 50 people allegedly broke into Savukku Shankar’s home while his mother was alone. “They took the household goods and damaged areas including the bedroom and kitchen. They poured excrement and sewage water into the house and committed this atrocity in the worst possible way,” EPS said.

Calling the incident unprecedented, EPS stated, “Such a despicable act has never happened in Tamil Nadu. No one who believes in democracy will tolerate this.”

EPS alleged that AIADMK sought permission to raise the issue in the Assembly but was denied. “We have brought this as an attention-grabbing resolution. Our stand is that people who trespass into a house in broad daylight and commit such atrocities should be punished according to law,” he asserted.

Criticism Of Tamil Nadu Police

Lashing out at the Tamil Nadu Police, EPS said, “Tamil Nadu Police is keeping its hands silent today and acting as a front office for DMK. This is very despicable. If this is the situation for a famous journalist, where exactly is law and order in Tamil Nadu?”

EPS further criticized the handling of the case, alleging that despite the gravity of the attack, proper cases were not registered, and the accused secured bail the same day. “The ruling party should not support this. The government, which is supposed to protect the people—how can people live in a democracy if they support this?” he questioned.

Walkout And Protest

AIADMK legislators walked out of the Assembly in protest, raising slogans against the government’s alleged indifference. EPS reiterated, “Our position is that no such thing should happen to any human being.”

He accused the DMK government of failing to take stringent action. “This government does not care about people who trespass into someone’s home, damage things, throw human waste, and pollute. Is there governance here? Or is a dictatorship going on?” he asked.

“Anyone Can Go Anywhere In India” – Union FM Nirmala Sitharaman Fires Back At MDMK MP Vaiko’s “Enter TN” Threat

During a Rajya Sabha session, MP Vaiko voiced concerns about Tamil Nadu fishermen, sparking a heated exchange. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman strongly objected to his remark, “Tamil Nadu, you enter Tamil Nadu, I’ll see you.”

Objecting to his threatening statement, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “He said one line, wait a minute, he may be very emotional sir but that one line he said is objectionable and I will seek your indulgence to remove it. He said, “You set foot in Tamil Nadu, and I will take care.” No good. No, it is wrong. You should not say that. What you say is wrong. Anyone can set foot on any place in this country, no one has any right on anyone else. This is atrocious. What language is this?”

Netizens expressed their anger at Vaiko for making such a threatening statement and praised FM Nirmala Sitharaman for now cowing down to it.

SFIO Probe Uncovers Massive Embezzlement; Kerala CM’s Daughter Veena Vijayan Under Scanner In CMRL Payoff Case

On 3 April 2025, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs authorized prosecution proceedings against Veena Vijayan, the daughter of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in connection with the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) payoff case, based on a chargesheet filed by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO).

The charges involve Exalogic, Sasidharan Kartha (the Managing Director of CMRL), CMRL, and a sister company. Investigations suggest that Veena Vijayan allegedly received ₹2.70 crore without providing any corresponding services.

This decision was made following the SFIO’s report, which identified irregularities in the transaction between CMRL and Exalogic. The charges outlined in the SFIO’s chargesheet carry serious consequences, including potential prison terms of up to 10 years for the accused.

Allegations Of Financial Misconduct

Veena Vijayan and Exalogic are accused of illegally receiving ₹2.70 crore from both CMRL and Empower India, a company linked to Sasidharan Kartha and his wife, who are directors of Empower India. Veena Vijayan, Sasidharan Kartha, Exalogic, and CMRL face charges under Section 447 of the Companies Act, which deals with financial fraud. This section stipulates penalties ranging from six months to 10 years in prison, along with a fine up to three times the embezzled amount.

With the formal sanctioning of prosecution, the trial can now proceed in the economic crimes court in Kochi. Summons will be issued to the accused, including Veena Vijayan, and additional charges have been filed against Sasidharan Kartha and members of the CMRL board of directors.

The investigation has revealed an alleged ₹182 crore embezzlement within CMRL, where fictitious expenses and fake bills were allegedly used to siphon off funds. This scheme was said to involve two companies—Nipuna International Private Limited and Sasja India Private Limited—both connected to Sasidharan Kartha’s family.

The case follows a 14-month investigation that began in January 2024, initially examined by the Income Tax Department’s Interim Settlement Board, before being scrutinized by the Registrar of Companies (ROC), and ultimately investigated by the SFIO. With formal charges now filed, attention is focused on the legal proceedings to determine whether Veena Vijayan will face prosecution for her involvement in this financial irregularity case.

“Vaikoji Understands Hindi”, Quips Union HM Amit Shah As Vaiko Objects To RS MP Sudhanshu Trivedi’s Arguments On Waqf In Hindi

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on 3 April 2025 defended the Waqf Amendment Bill, stating that it was introduced for the benefit of poor Muslims while accusing opposition parties of indulging in appeasement politics.

Participating in the discussion on the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Trivedi argued that the government’s support for underprivileged Muslims would be recognized in the future. “This fight is between Sharafat Ali and Shararat Khan. Our government is standing with Sharafat Ali, and we are with poor Muslims,” he said. He further claimed that the government had chosen to stand with ordinary Muslims rather than so-called fanatic and fundamentalist thekedars (leaders).

Trivedi criticized the Congress, alleging that the party selectively supports minorities based on electoral considerations. He referenced disputes involving the Catholic Church and Muslim bodies over land, questioning why Waqf Board land claims were legitimized under previous governments while similar claims from Sikhs and Hindus were not addressed.

He also commented on the changing image of the Muslim community, lamenting that it was once represented by great artists and intellectuals. “When we gained independence, who were the representatives of the Muslim community? Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Fariduddin Dagar, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali, Ustad Zakir Hussain who passed away recently, Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi, Sahir Ludhianvi, and Jigar Muradabadi. But what has happened now?” he asked.

Trivedi then compared this past legacy with the present, saying, “Earlier the Muslim community was linked to these stalwarts. But today, the leadership of the Muslim community is with the likes of – Israt Jahaan, Yakub Menon, Mukhtar Ansari, Atiq Ahmed, Dawood Ibrahim. Who is doing this? This is happening since the country became secular… since 1976. And secular administration began. It has led them to their state today.”

His remarks were met with strong objections from opposition leaders, including Fauzia Khan (NCP-SCP), Jairam Ramesh (Congress), Digvijay Singh (Congress), and especially MDMK leader Vaiko.

At this moment, Home Minister Amit Shah intervened and jokingly said, “Vaikoji understands Hindi” leading to peals of laughter across the board.

Indian Rupee Strengthens Against Dollar Amid Trump’s Reciprocal Tariffs

The Indian rupee witnessed sharp gains on Friday at below 85 against dollar, as the dollar index and oil prices dropped sharply amid concerns over recession in the US economy after the reciprocal tariffs were announced.

It is for the first time since December 2024 when rupee traded below 85 against dollar. At the beginning of the trading session, the rupee opened at 85.04 and in the early trade, it stood at 84.99, almost 40 paise up from the previous close of 85.44.

The reason for the rise in rupee against dollar is attributed to the weakening of dollar index due to the reciprocal tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump and the fall in crude oil prices. Since Trump announced the tariffs, the dollar index, which shows the strength of the US currency against the currencies of the world’s six major currencies, has sharply declined — around 101.70. On Thursday, when the tariffs were announced, the dollar index stood at 104.

According to experts, the tariffs imposed by President Trump are more than expected, due to which there is a risk of the US economy going into recession and due to this, the dollar is becoming weak. One reason for the strength of the rupee against the dollar is the sharp decline in crude oil. Brent crude remains close to 69.64 dollar per barrel.

India imports more than 80 per cent of its crude oil requirement, so whenever the price of crude oil falls, the country save a large amount of foreign money. It helps rupees to gain against dollar. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said there has been a sharp recovery in the rupee against the dollar.

Due to global cues and FIIs flow, the rupee can remain between 85 to 85.90 against the dollar. The performance of Indian rupee in FY25, when compared with other global currencies, was relatively stable, with a stronger dollar weighing on all major currency pairs. Towards the end of the year, a reversal in dollar strength and FPI inflows into debt supported a rally in rupee, with the domestic currency recouping as much as 2.4 per cent in a single-month alone, according to a report by Bank of Baroda (BoB).

TN BJP Chief Annamalai Slams DMK’s Waqf Bill Resolution, Accuses Party Of Exploiting Minority Votes For Vote Bank Politics

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has criticized Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over his protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill, accusing him of prioritizing vote-bank politics over genuine concerns for the minority Muslims. Responding to Stalin’s black badge protest in the Assembly and his decision to challenge the Bill in the Supreme Court, Annamalai pointed out that it’s not only Hindus but also Christians who have been affected by the previous Waqf law. He further mocked the DMK, suggesting that their next move would be to stage a “DMK drama” by hiring someone to write a book titled “Appa’s Efforts to Oppose the 2025 Waqf Bill.” Annamalai claimed that the DMK would use this as an election tactic to mislead innocent Muslims during the 2026 Assembly and 2029 Parliament elections.

TN BJP chief Annamalai, in a statement on his official X account on 3 April 2025, stated, “DMK’s misadventure in assembly today, which includes the DMK alliance MLAs wearing black badges and Thiru @mkstalin proclaiming they will challenge the Waqf Bill in the Supreme Court, is, of late, becoming extremely predictable! All this drama is to save a portion of their minority vote bank. Has the TN CM not realised that it is not just Hindus but also Christians who are also the affected parties due to the previous Waqf law? Kindly don’t use the assembly for your theatrics, Thiru @mkstalin. Their follow-up drama would be for DMK to hire someone next year before the elections to write a book titled “Appa’s Efforts to Oppose the 2025 Waqf Bill.” DMK will make this an election plank and misguide innocent Muslims in the 2026 assembly and 2029 parliament elections.”

This criticism from Annamalai comes in the context of CM M.K. Stalin’s opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill passed by the central government. Stalin had introduced a resolution in the state assembly, asserting that the government would challenge the Bill in the Supreme Court.

In his speech in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Shri M.K. Stalin condemned the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha of the Indian Parliament. He stated, “Honourable Speaker, on 27 March 2025, we passed a resolution in this Assembly calling for the complete withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha to amend the Waqf Act of 1995. This Bill poses a significant threat to the religious harmony of our country and the minority Muslim community. The resolution was unanimously supported by all parties, except the BJP. Most political parties in India opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill, and it is highly condemnable that it was passed in the Lok Sabha despite this widespread opposition. A total of 232 Members of Parliament voted against the Bill, while 288 voted in favor. While the Bill has been passed, the fact that 232 members opposed it is significant, and there may have been additional opposition. Our stance is that this amendment should not merely be opposed, but completely withdrawn, which is what we resolved here. The passage of such a law at 2 AM, with the support of a few coalition parties despite the majority opposition, is an attack on the very foundation of the Indian Constitution and a direct assault on religious harmony. To highlight this, we are participating in today’s assembly proceedings wearing black badges. I inform this Assembly that a case will be filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam against this controversial amendment. Tamil Nadu will fight! Fight! Fight! And we will emerge victorious against the Union government’s law, which undermines the autonomy of the Waqf Board and threatens the security of the minority Muslim community. I pledge to this House that we will legally defend our Constitution against such attacks.”

Anti-Hindu Propaganda Film ‘Empuraan’ Producer Gokulam Gopalan’s Chit Fund Offices Raided By ED

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at the premises of Gokulam Chit Funds in Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Friday. According to sources, the raids were part of an ongoing investigation into alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The searches were carried out at the company’s offices in Chennai by ED officials from Kerala.

Gokulam Chit Funds, owned by businessman and film producer AM Gopalan, popularly known as Gokulam Gopalan, operates in multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Puducherry, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana. The ED has yet to release an official statement regarding the current action.

This is not the first time the financial firm has come under scrutiny. In April 2017, the Income Tax Department had raided its offices in three states, accusing the company of tax evasion. Officials alleged that Sree Gokulam Chits had deliberately concealed significant amounts of income, including recovered bad debts and interest earnings, from its records. Sources at the time claimed that the company had failed to disclose ₹1,107 crore over five years, thereby avoiding substantial tax payments.

Gopalan himself has faced legal troubles in the past. In August 2019, his son, Byju Gopalan, was jailed in the United Arab Emirates for allegedly forging documents.

It is noteworthy that Gopalan has also made headlines as a film producer, co-producing the recently released Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer and part of a planned trilogy by director Prithviraj Sukumaran and actor Mohanlal. The film has been the subject of controversy, with allegations that it contains covert references to the Gujarat riots, drawing criticism from right-wing groups.

Dravidian Model Of Administration: DMK Abandons Amma Kudineer Water Scheme In Chennai, Outlets Shut Down

The Amma Kudineer initiative, a landmark program introduced by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to provide 20 liters of free drinking water per family each day, appears to have been abandoned by the current DMK government in Chennai. Several Amma Kudineer water distribution points across the city have been shut down, leaving residents struggling to access clean drinking water. Since June 2023, many of these outlets have either fallen into disrepair or been closed due to poor coordination between the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB).

In June 2023, the GCC passed a resolution to transfer the management of 53 Amma Kudineer units to the CMWSSB, citing the board’s expertise in water treatment. This decision was later supported by a directive from the Additional Chief Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

According to the GCC, 50 of the 53 Amma Kudineer outlets were still operational as of March 2025. However, a visit to five of these outlets by TNM revealed that none of them were working. When questioned, CMWSSB officials stated they had not yet received an official transfer of these units and therefore, were not responsible for their maintenance.

At an outlet on Elaya Street, Tondiarpet, residents reported that the facility had been closed for over a year. Previously, it supplied approximately 8,000 liters of water daily to 300 nearby households. One resident described how the outlet had been a crucial resource when operational, but now they had to rely on hand pumps, which provided poor-quality water. Many households often wasted up to 30 buckets of water just to remove impurities, and in some cases, the water had an unpleasant odor or even traces of sewage, leading to skin infections.

Murugan, a resident of Tsunami Quarters, explained that with the Amma Kudineer outlet no longer functioning, many people had turned to water lorries to meet their needs. He noted that residents now had to manually fill barrels from hand pumps early in the morning, while the metro water lorry, which arrived every other day, charged ₹15 per barrel and ₹1 per pot—an additional financial strain on families.

M. Renuka, the councillor for Ward 42, stated that the outlets had been handed over to the CMWSSB for better management, but no response had been received regarding when services would resume.

Similar concerns had been raised in other parts of Chennai. In Ward 110 of Teynampet, an Amma Kudineer outlet near a corporation park had remained locked for over a year. A resident in the area indicated that the closure was due to low usage.

According to R. Sivamurugan, Chief Engineer of the Operation and Maintenance Division 1, the GCC had not officially transferred the outlets to the CMWSSB, which meant the board could not be held responsible for their closure.

Meanwhile, Mayor Priya Rajan clarified that while Metro Water was in charge of the water supply, the GCC was responsible for maintaining the infrastructure. She pointed out that several Amma Kudineer outlets in areas like Saidapet were still operational, suggesting that some closures might have resulted from low demand.

“Do They Have The Guts?” – Kerala BJP MP Suresh Gopi’s Explosive Retort To CPIM MP John Brittas Over Film Censorship & Waqf Debate

In a fiery exchange in the upper house of Parliament, BJP MP and actor Suresh Gopi hit back at CPI(M) MP John Brittas, calling out what he described as hypocrisy and misinformation in Brittas’ statements regarding the Waqf Act amendments and Kerala’s political landscape. Suresh Gopi delivered a blistering counterattack against CPI(M)’s John Brittas during a heated debate on Waqf Board amendments and Kerala’s political landscape, after Brittas launched a scathing attack, alleging discrimination in religious matters and accusing the government of trying to alienate Muslims from Waqf properties.

The Debate Over Waqf and Religious Discrimination

The confrontation began when Brittas launched a scathing critique of the government’s proposed changes to Waqf laws, accusing the ruling party of “extending bulldozer politics to the divine realm.” The CPI(M) member claimed the amendments discriminated against Muslim religious properties while protecting Hindu endowments, declaring: Sir they have already discriminated amongst people, they segregated people from

people. You know this bill what they intending, they are segregating gods from gods, they’re segregating Hindu gods from Allah. This act of limitation is not applicable to Devastanam, not applicable to a Hindu god, they want to make it applicable to Allah. How can they discriminate between gods? He further said, “This is extension of bulldozer, digging, and danga. Whatever is happening in this country that has been extended to a piece of legislation.”

Switching to Malayalam, he claimed the BJP was shedding crocodile tears for the Christians and that Christians were being persecuted every day. Then he brought up the film Empuraan. He said, “The other day we spoke about the movie Empuraan. There is a character in the film Munna. You can see that Munna here. You can see a Munna on BJP benches. Malayalis will figure it out. Kerala will figure it out. That is Kerala’s history. Kerala will keep your poison out. One man (read Gopi) has won. Like we closed the account in Nemom, we will close this account also. Malayalis made a mistake and they will rectify it soon. Don’t worry.”

Brittas then brought up Munambam, a village in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, where a conflict has arisen over 400 acres of land designated as Waqf property, despite being home to Christian families. “Nobody will lose their house in Munambam. The Left government in Kerala has the responsibility to protect all families. It’s a promise of the government. The government had the wherewithal and courage to construct 5 lakh houses for the homeless. We don’t need anybody’s charity,” he said.

Suresh Gopi’s Fiery Speech

Hitting back, Gopi later said, “There was an indirect reference to a Malayalam movie. He was talking about Empuraan… Does he dare to have a re-release of  51 cuts TP Chandrasekharan (based on the life of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader TP Chandrashekharan who was stabbed to death), Left Right Left? Two films, does Mr. Brittas or his Kairali channel or his chairman in the Kairali channel who is a leading actor in the Malayalam film industry, I do not wish to take his name because he is a noble soul. Do they have the guts, does the chief minister of Kerala have the guts? Sir, they should have the guts to let these two films be screened again, permitted to be screened, then they can start yelling for Empuraan and one more matter of fact which is the only truth, which I have to be letting the Indian nationals, I have to be letting it known to the Indian citizens. There was no Censor pressure on the producers of Empuraan, I was the first person to call up the producers and ask them to delete my name in the form of a credit card towards the beginning of the film. So this is the truth. I’m ready to take any punishment if this turns out to be a false on-record deposit that I am making in this upper house. Sir, it was the decision of the producers and the lead actor of the film with the permission of the director of the film to remove 17 portions from that film. It was their decision and what is the circus which is going on in the name of politics in the whole of the state?”

Speaking on Munambam, Gopi said, “This party has killed some 800-odd people in Kerala… 600 families were cheated because of your politics of murder in Munambam. They had set up a commission which was thrown out by the HC, buried in the Arabian Sea. You will be buried by the people of Kerala, irrespective of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians,” he said.

As tempers flared, Brittas attempted to have Gopi’s remarks expunged, calling them “derogatory.” But the Chair did not agree to it instantly.
