ED Files Chargesheet Against Bengal Minister Chandranath Sinha In Primary Teachers Recruitment Scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), on 7 August, filed a charge sheet against West Bengal Minister in-charge of the micro, small and medium enterprises and textiles department, Chandranath Sinha, in the case regarding irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers in state-run schools in the state.

Sinha is the second Minister in the Bengal government against whom ED had filed a charge sheet in this case, the first being the former West Bengal Education Minister and Trinamool Congress Secretary General Partha Chatterjee. The ED filed the charge sheet against Minister Sinha in a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata on 6 August, said an insider from the central investigation agency.

Sinha is a two-time Trinamool MLA from Bolpur Assembly constituency in Birbhum district. He twice avoided appearing before the ED officers. On Thursday, Sinha suddenly appeared at the ED office. However, it was not clear whether he had been questioned or not. Responding to the development that the ED has filed a charge sheet against him in the primary recruitment case, the Minister said he had heard about it. “However, I do not know about the matter completely. We will look into it,” Sinha said on 7 August afternoon.

On 31 July, ED investigators had sent a request for property documents from Sinha. At the same time, documents related to all the movable and immovable properties of the Minister and his family were sought. However, Sinha did not appear before ED officers at its CGO Complex office in Kolkata’s Salt Lake. He had reportedly asked the ED for more time. He told the ED officers that although he could appear before them, he was preparing all the documents. In a surprising move, he went to the ED office on Thursday, a day after the central probe agency submitted a charge sheet in his name before a special court. The ED officials first secured the name of the Minister from the diary of the middleman and now suspended Trinamool Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh, who was later arrested by the central agency officials.

In March last year, the ED officials conducted raid and search operations at the Minister’s residence at Bolpur in Birbhum district. After the raid, the ED officials seized cash worth Rs 41 lakh and a mobile phone from Sinha’s residence. Sinha is known to be close to Trinamool Congress strongman and former Trinamool Congress district president in Birbhum, Anubrata Mondal. In March last year, Sinha was also summoned by the ED for questioning in connection with the multi-crore cattle-smuggling case in West Bengal.

DMK Patriarch Karunanidhi’s Photo Placed At Swamimalai Temple Sparks Outrage; DMK Removes It After Protests

karunanidhi swamimalai dmk

Following widespread criticism from devotees, local residents, and the BJP, a photograph of the late former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was removed from the entrance of the Swaminadha Swami Temple in Swamimalai, located in Thanjavur district.

The controversy erupted when DMK members marked Karunanidhi’s seventh death anniversary by placing his image on the temple gate. This gesture sparked outrage among devotees and locals, who questioned why DMK cadres chose a sacred temple entrance to pay tribute, arguing that it disrespected the religious sanctity of the space.

Adding to the criticism, SG Suryah, the BJP’s state youth wing president condemned the act on social media platform X, stating, “Did the shameless DMK choose only the holy entrance of Swamimalai temple to pay homage to Karunanidhi? The abuses under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, a tool of the DMK government, won’t continue forever. The government will change and so will these scenes.”

In response to the growing protests and public outcry, DMK members eventually took down Karunanidhi’s photo from the temple gate.

Belagavi, Karnataka: Muslim Preacher Arrested For Alleged Sexual Assault Of 5-Year-Old Inside Mosque

In a deeply disturbing incident, a Muslim preacher has been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old girl inside a mosque in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. The incident reportedly took place in October 2023 but came to light only recently after CCTV footage and information were circulated on social media by an activist.

The accused has been identified as Tufail Ahmad Dadafeer, a resident of Mahalingpur, who was taken into custody following a probe initiated by the Belagavi district authorities. Despite the availability of video evidence showing the assault inside the mosque, the victim’s family had not approached the police, allegedly due to fear and concerns about the girl’s future.

Law enforcement authorities, upon discovering the footage and details online, contacted the girl’s father to encourage him to file an official complaint. However, he declined, reportedly citing a desire to protect his daughter and family from public exposure and potential backlash.

With the family unwilling to register the case, the District Child Protection Unit filed a complaint on the child’s behalf, prompting swift police action. The accused was then arrested.

According to Dr. Bhimashankar S. Guled, Superintendent of Police, Belagavi, Dadafeer primarily worked as a welder and truss structure installer but also served as a religious preacher at various mosques. “He wasn’t scheduled to preach on the day of the incident but had gone to the mosque following a domestic dispute,” Dr. Guled stated.

He added that the child was visibly distressed and afraid after the assault. “The family reviewed the CCTV footage, discovered what had happened, but chose not to report it. Even when we urged them, they refused. So, based on the child protection officer’s complaint, we proceeded with the arrest,” he said.

The case is currently being investigated by the Muragod police.

Case Filed Against Parithabangal For Satirical Video On Casteism In Tamil Nadu

parithabangal case honour killing casteism tamil nadu

A police complaint has been lodged against popular YouTube content creators Gopi and Sudhakar, known collectively as Parithabangal, for their recent video addressing caste-based social issues in the wake of “honour killing” of a Scheduled Caste youth in Tirunelveli.

The complaint, filed by an advocate named Dhanushkodi at the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner’s Office, alleges that the satirical video titled “Society Paavangal” contains material that is offensive to certain communities and promotes disharmony.

The complainant has accused the creators of making derogatory references to “two specific communities” and claimed the content incites hatred and defames social groups. Police confirmed receipt of the complaint and said it was under preliminary review. No FIR has been filed as of Thursday evening.

What Is The Video About?

The video, uploaded to the Parithabangal YouTube channel, is a 15-minute social satire that critiques caste pride, discrimination, and community-based groupism, particularly among youth. Through a series of dialogues and dramatized scenes, the creators portray how misguided notions of “heritage,” “pride,” and “belonging” linked to caste identity can derail lives, glorify violence, and perpetuate social stagnation.

The video follows a protagonist who has been “induced” to wake up the casteist feelings within and is allegedly shown to be of Thevar or Gounder caste – identified by his clothes, forehead markings and wristband. There are instances where the main character played by Sudhakar is shown telling his community people to “identify” brethren with their wrist bands.

The other character played by Gopi attempts to pull him back from these evils. Sudhakar again is shown flexing and wielding the sickle as is seen with specific communities in TN.

There is also a scene where a recent viral social media video proclaiming caste pride is recreated. In the video that made its rounds on social media, people from a specific caste were seen flexing it on their car on a highway.

Following this scene, “honour killing” makes its entrance – Sudhakar is seen telling his friend how to maintain caste honour – either the boy or the girl has to disappear, if people from different castes are involved in a relationship. He is also seen instigating the other friend to “do something” about the relationship.

As Gopi attempts to prevent his friends from yielding to peer pressure and emotional manipulation from members of their group, they pull him back, leading to tragic consequences – all this in a satirical way. The video ends with a reflection on how caste-based groupism has ruined multiple young lives, including those with the potential for athletic and academic success.

The creators have not yet released an official statement, but the video continues to circulate widely on social media. The video has also drawn criticism from some quarters who see it as generalizing or misrepresenting caste identities.

It is noteworthy that the same duo was in trouble for their derogatory take on the Tirupati laddu adulteration issue.

‘Dirty Indian, Go Back’: 6-Year-Old Girl Assaulted In Ireland Amid Surge In Hate Attacks

ireland anti indian racist attack girl immigrant hate

A disturbing wave of racially motivated attacks against Indians in Ireland has emerged in recent weeks, with at least six incidents reported since July 2025. Among the victims is a six-year-old Indian-origin girl, Nia Naveen, who was physically assaulted by a group of older children outside her home in Waterford City on Monday evening. The attack, coupled with a string of other violent hate crimes, has raised serious concerns about the safety of the Indian community in the country.

6-Year-Old Girl Attacked While Playing Outside

Nia, a native-born Irish citizen of Indian origin, was playing near her home around 7:30 PM on 4 August 2025 when she was brutally attacked by a group of children aged between 12 and 14. According to her mother, Anupa Achuthan, the children punched Nia in the face and neck, pulled her hair, and reportedly pushed a bicycle wheel into her private parts. The assailants allegedly shouted, “Dirty Indian, go back to India,” and used expletives during the assault.

Anupa, who had briefly stepped inside the house to feed her 10-month-old baby, recounted the horrific incident in an interview with the Irish Mirror. “She came back crying and terrified. She couldn’t even speak properly because of the fear. One of her friends later told me what happened. My daughter was punched multiple times. One of the boys pushed a cycle wheel onto her private parts. They used racial slurs. She’s now scared to go out, unable to sleep,” said Anupa.

The family, originally from Kottayam in Kerala, moved to their current home in the Kilbarry area of Waterford in January. Anupa, a nurse, has lived in Ireland for eight years and recently received citizenship. Her husband, K.S. Naveen, also works in Ireland. Though the family identified the gang responsible, Anupa emphasized that she does not want the children punished, but rather educated and counselled. Irish police have been informed of the incident.

Cab Driver Attacked with Bottle in Ballymun

Just a day after the assault on the child, another Indian-origin individual, cab driver Lakhvir Singh, was attacked in Ballymun, a suburb of Dublin, on 5 August 2025. Singh, who has lived in Ireland for 23 years, was attacked by two passengers, aged around 20 to 21, after he drove them from northside Dublin to Poppintree. Upon arrival, the assailants struck Singh on the head with a glass bottle, causing severe bleeding. Singh said they shouted, “Go back to your own country,” before fleeing the scene.

Singh, bleeding and injured, knocked on several doors for help but received no response. He eventually dialed 999 and was taken to Beaumont Hospital by emergency services. Singh remains traumatised and fearful of returning to work.

Sous Chef from Kolkata Robbed and Assaulted

In another recent case, Laxman Das, a sous chef originally from Kolkata, was attacked in Dublin while on his way to work at the Anantara The Marker Hotel. The incident took place near the Hilton Hotel, where three attackers assaulted him and stole his mobile phone, electric bike, and cash. Das was admitted to St. Vincent’s University Hospital following the attack.

Amazon Employee Brutally Attacked and Stripped

On 19 July 2025, an Indian-origin Amazon employee, aged 40, was viciously beaten and partially stripped in Tallaght, Dublin. The man had only recently arrived in Ireland, having been there for just three weeks. A teenage gang reportedly stabbed him in the face, beat him, and removed some of his clothes before fleeing the scene. The Irish police later stated that initial accusations against the victim regarding inappropriate behavior near children were unfounded. Authorities are treating the incident as a hate crime.

Jennifer Murray, an Irish woman who came to the man’s aid, told the media that this was not an isolated case. “This was clearly racially motivated. This is not the first time,” she said.

Data Scientist Left with Fractured Cheekbone After Teen Mob Attack

At the end of July, Santosh Yadav, a 32-year-old data scientist from India, was assaulted by a gang of six teenagers near his Dublin residence. Yadav sustained a fractured cheekbone and other injuries. He recounted the attack in a LinkedIn post, saying the teens broke his glasses, punched him repeatedly in the head, face, chest, and legs, and left him bleeding on the pavement.

He was later taken to Blanchardstown Hospital, where his injuries were confirmed and referred for further specialist treatment. Yadav also accused Irish police of being slow to act and delaying investigation procedures.

Rising Anti-Immigrant Sentiment in Ireland

The spate of attacks comes amid a growing anti-immigrant sentiment in Ireland. Some groups have falsely accused immigrants, including Indians, of being responsible for the country’s housing crisis. Prashant Shukla, Chairman of the Ireland India Council, dismissed the claim as “mischievous propaganda.”

The Council has written to multiple Irish government ministers, drawing attention to the rise in racial attacks against Indian nationals and calling for immediate action. The organization has also urged the government to consider legal measures that would hold parents accountable when minors commit racially motivated crimes.

Indian Embassy Issues Advisory

In response to the increasing incidents of violence, the Indian Embassy in Ireland issued an advisory on August 1 urging Indian nationals to take reasonable precautions, especially avoiding deserted areas during odd hours.

The spate of racial attacks has sparked fear and concern within the Indian community in Ireland, with many calling for stronger protection, education, and accountability to prevent further violence.

Supreme Court Rejects Justice Yashwant Varma’s Challenge To In-House Inquiry And Removal Recommendation

justice yashwant varma resign supreme court

On 7 August 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed the writ petition filed by Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who contested the in-house inquiry report implicating him in the ‘case-at-home’ controversy. The petition also challenged the recommendation by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to the President and Prime Minister for Justice Varma’s removal.

A bench consisting of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih, which had reserved judgment on 30 July, delivered its verdict today.

The court immediately ruled that the writ petition was not maintainable due to Justice Varma’s conduct specifically, his initial cooperation with the inquiry followed by his later questioning of the in-house panel’s authority to investigate him.

Despite dismissing the petition’s maintainability, the bench addressed five key constitutional questions raised by the case:

  1. Does the inquiry have a legal basis?
  2. Is the inquiry and resulting report an unauthorized parallel mechanism outside the Constitution?
  3. Does Paragraph 5B of the in-house procedure violate constitutional provisions or infringe on a High Court judge’s fundamental rights?
  4. Did the Chief Justice of India (CJI) or the committee overseeing the inquiry follow or deviate from the prescribed procedure?
  5. Is Paragraph 7(2), which requires the CJI to forward the inquiry report to the President and Prime Minister, unconstitutional?

Justice Datta clarified that the inquiry is legally sanctioned and not an extra-constitutional process. He rejected claims that Paragraph 5B violates constitutional rights, affirming it does not infringe on a judge’s fundamental rights. The bench found that the CJI and his committee adhered strictly to the inquiry procedures, except for uploading videos and photographs related to the fire-fighting operation on the Supreme Court website a step deemed unnecessary by the procedure and irrelevant since it was not challenged in a timely manner.

Regarding the requirement to forward the report to the President and Prime Minister, the court upheld its constitutionality. The bench also dismissed arguments that Justice Varma was denied a hearing before the report’s transmission, stating that the procedure did not mandate such an opportunity. The fact that another judge might have been granted a hearing in a different case does not create a universal right for this petitioner.

The court reserved Justice Varma’s right to raise his defense if impeachment proceedings are initiated.

Additionally, the Supreme Court dismissed a separate petition by advocate Mathews J Nedumpara seeking an FIR against Justice Varma for “abuse of court process” and “false submissions.”

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Mukul Rohatgi represented Justice Varma, who had filed the petition anonymously as ‘XXX.’

Sibal argued that under Article 124(4), a judge can only be removed for “proved misbehavior” or incapacity, and that the in-house procedure allowing the CJI to recommend impeachment initiation is unconstitutional. Justice Datta countered that the in-house inquiry is a preliminary, ad-hoc step, and its report is not treated as evidence, thus no grievance arises at this stage.

The controversy began with the accidental discovery of a large amount of cash in an outhouse at Justice Varma’s official residence during a firefighting operation on March 14. This sparked a public outcry.

Subsequently, then CJI Sanjiv Khanna set up a three-judge inquiry committee comprising Justices Sheel Nagu, GS Sandhawalia, and Anu Sivaraman. Justice Varma was reassigned to the Allahabad High Court, and his judicial duties were suspended during the investigation.

After examining 55 witnesses including Justice Varma and his daughter and reviewing video and photographic evidence from the fire brigade, the committee concluded that the cash was found in a storeroom under Justice Varma’s control. The judge failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the money, instead denying the allegations or alleging conspiracy. On this basis, the committee recommended action against him. Recently, impeachment notices with the required signatures have been circulated in both Houses of Parliament.

Arundhati Roy’s Books Among 25 Others Forfeited By J&K Govt For Contributing To Radicalisation

arundhati roy books forfeited azadi kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir government has declared 25 books as ‘forfeited’ under the law for contributing to radicalisation of youth, glorification of terrorists, vilification of security forces and promotion of alienation among the people.

Among them are books by author Arundhati Roy. The J&K Home Department issued an order to this effect late on Wednesday night. The order reads, “The identified 25 books have been found to excite secessionism and endangering sovereignty and integrity of India, thereby, attracting the provisions of Sections 152, 196 and 197 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.”

The order said that under Section 98 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the J&K government has declared publication of 25 books, and their copies or other documents to be forfeited to the government. “These 25 books have been identified for propagating false narrative and secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir and need to be declared as ‘forfeited’ in terms of Section 98 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. “It has come to the notice of the government that certain literature propagates false narrative and secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir.”

“Available evidence based on investigations and credible Intelligence unflinchingly indicate that a significant driver behind youth participation in violence and terrorism has been systematic dissemination of false narratives and secessionist literature by its persistent internal circulation, often disguised as historical or political commentary while playing a critical role in misguiding the youth, glorifying terrorism and inciting violence against the Indian State.”

“This literature would deeply impact the psyche of youth by promoting culture of grievance, victimhood and terrorist heroism. Some of the means by which this literature has contributed to the radicalisation of the youth in Jammu and Kashmir include distortion of historical facts, glorification of terrorists, vilification of security forces, religious radicalisation, promotion of alienation, pathway to violence and terrorism.”

The books declared as forfeited by the government include ‘Azadi’ by Arundhati Roy, ‘Kashmir’ (The case of Freedom) by Tariq Ali, Hillal Bhatt, Angana P Chatterji, Pankaj Mishra and Arundhati Roy, ‘The Kashmir Dispute 1947-2012’ by A.G. ‘Ready To Bear The Cost’: PM Modi Stands Firm On Farmers & Fishermen Amid US Tariff Threats

India's Vision For Free, Secure Maritime Network Resonates Across The World: PM Modi tariff threats trump

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that he is ready to bear the cost of protecting India’s agricultural trade and the country would never compromise on farmers and fishermen interests, as US President Donald Trump announced to impose 50 per cent tariffs on India.

Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference here, PM Modi said that “for us, the interest of farmers remains our top priority”.

“India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers,” the Prime Minister told the gathering. PM Modi further said that “I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it and I am ready for it. India is ready for it.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks came amid a trade standoff, triggered by Trump’s announcement of 25 per cent import duty on Indian goods, effective from August 7. He cited India’s purchase of crude oil and military hardware from Russia as grounds for another 25 per cent tariff hike, effective from August 27.

India has categorically said that the latest tariff actions by Trump are “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”. “We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” an MEA spokesperson said in a statement.

The United States has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia. “We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India,” the MEA spokesperson said.

“It is, therefore, extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” said the official statement.

The new tariffs will be applied to all eligible Indian goods entering the US from 21 days after the order’s signing, except for shipments already in transit before the deadline and cleared before September 17.

Bihar: No Objections Filed By Political Parties A Week After Draft Voter Rolls Released

bihar sir draft voter rolls objection claim

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said that all political parties taken together including the Opposition – RJD and Congress, have filed zero ‘claims and objections’ for inclusion or exclusion in the electoral draft rolls, a week after its publication.

However, 5,015 people have directly submitted objections with the poll panel. ‘No objection’ to the draft rolls by parties assumes importance as a week has already passed after the August 1 publication for redressal of complaints and grievances.

Even as 5,015 people have directly submitted objections with the poll panel, in terms of new electors, those crossing the stipulated age of 18 years for voting, more than 27,000 individuals have sought the EC’s nod for getting their names added in the voters list.

The draft rolls published after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar became a bone of contention between Opposition and the Election Commission, as the former smelled a plot in ‘dropping’ of about 65 lakh electorate from the list. The EC has maintained that the process remains clean and transparent and the deletion of 65 lakh names from the list was necessitated because of inevitable reasons like death or permanent migration of residents.

The EC has been routinely reaching out to political parties to join the revision exercise and bring to its notice instances of disenfranchisement, if any. “Submit your claims and objections to rectify any errors in the draft Electoral Roll of Bihar published on August 1. So far, not even a single claim or objection has been submitted by any political party,” the EC said in a statement The RJD has 47,506 Booth Level Agents (BLAs), the Congress has 17,549 and the Left has over 2,000, all adding up to over 67,000 BLAs.

Bihar has a total of 7.89 crore voters. Out of that, 7.24 crore electorate submitted their enumeration forms during the SIR drive and therefore comprised eligible voters after the purging exercise.

As 65 lakh electorate failed to make it to the voters list after revision, the Opposition parties started gunning for the EC, accusing it of undertaking a ‘biased and partisan’ exercise in the poll-bound state.

TN SSI Murder Case: One Accused Shot Dead in Encounter, Two Others Surrender

special sub inspector ssi tn murder case encounter

In a significant development in the brutal murder of Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) Shanmugavel, the third accused, Manikandan, was shot dead in an encounter by Tamil Nadu Police on Thursday.

Manikandan was reportedly killed on the spot after he allegedly attacked the police team that had gone to arrest him. According to police sources, a special team traced Manikandan to a hideout following a statewide manhunt.

When the police attempted to arrest him, he reportedly charged at Assistant Inspector Saravanan with a weapon. In response, the officer opened fire in self-defence, resulting in Manikandan’s death. His body was sent for post-mortem examination, and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered as per standard procedure.

The Tamil Nadu Police had formed six special teams to apprehend the accused involved in the killing of SSI Shanmugavel, who was hacked to death on the night of August 5 while on patrol duty at a coconut grove in Chikkanoothu village near Madathukulam in Tiruppur district.

The grove is owned by AIADMK MLA Mahendran, and the accused were working as estate labourers. Shanmugavel had responded to a call regarding a family dispute inside the estate. During the intervention, he was brutally attacked by a father-son duo with a billhook, resulting in his death on the spot.

His colleague, an armed reserve constable, managed to escape and alert other officers. Meanwhile, the remaining two accused, Moorthy and his younger son Thangapandi, surrendered at the office of the Tiruppur District Superintendent of Police on Wednesday.

The accused were being interrogated. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had earlier expressed deep shock over the killing and announced a solatium of Rs 1 crore to the family of the deceased officer. He described the incident as an irreparable loss to the police force and assured strict action against the perpetrators.

The murder of SSI Shanmugavel has sparked outrage across the state, leading to intensified efforts by law enforcement. With one accused shot dead and two others in custody, the investigation is progressing swiftly under the supervision of senior officers.
