Stranded Canadian Cruise Ship Members Allowed To Go Home

Several groups of Canadians who were stranded on board the Koningsdam and Emerald Princess cruise ships have been repatriated to their respective homes. They had been left adrift due to a fear of coronavirus outbreak.

These two cruise liners had been anchored close to the Bahamas, near Nassau. Although the crew members were preparing to fly back to Canada, the Bahamian government had not given permission to dock. On Friday, they had disembarked at Los Angeles, and flew threw a chartered flight to Toronto.

Michelle Joly, who was aboard the Sky Princess, felt like a mini vacation in the beginning. But the situation became grimmer around April 1, as they were forced to self-quarantine and only allowed to come out during meal times. Then she was transferred to the Emerald Princess on April 26, she said.

Global Affairs said the Canadian government continues to work with airlines, cruise lines and foreign governments to bring Canadians home. Close to hundred US citizens who were aboard were also allowed to leave, as reported by Princess Cruises.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last month that about 80,000 crew members remained on board ships off the U.S. coast after most passengers had disembarked. There are hundreds of Canadians on dozens of ships yet to return home.

Communist parties fight amongst themselves for comments over Ambedkar

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has filed a complaint under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) who had criticized Ambedkar.

Vasumitra alias Vadivel Murugan, a member of the CPI, is alleged to have written a facebook post dishonouring Dr. Ambedkar. In light of this the Untouchability wing of CPI (M) has filed a case against Vasumitra under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

The issue was subject to much discussion among the so-called rationalist crowd. People like A. Marx have come out and expressed that the facebook post is condemnable but charging of Vasumitra under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act is a little too much. Kottravai, Sums Valarmathi and Tirupur Guna have expressed their anguish against CPM for slapping SC/ST Act against Vasumitra. A lot of them want the issue to be resolved through talks.

However, the CPM has come out harsh against those in support of Vasumitra saying that Vasumitra is a caste fanatic and others like A.Marx and Kottravai also need to be slapped with SC/Act.

On the other hand, people like Pa. Ranjith, Shobasakthi, Madhivannan, Neelakandan have supported the CPM’s stance. Other Dalit parties have also come out in support for CPM and wants cases filed under the Act against Vasumitra.

It is to be noted that the CPM had come out in support of Perumal Murugan who in his novel One Part Woman had portrayed the religious practices of Kongu Vellalar community and their women in a distasteful manner. The Kongu Vellalars who protested against the novel were called as ‘caste-Hindus’ trying to stifle freedom of speech and expression.

However, they seem to have taken a contradicting position by suppressing Vadivel Murugan and those in support of him.

“By using the SC/ST Act against me, it is understood that there exists a mindset to portray him as a caste leader.”, said Vadivel Murugan in his facebook post.  However, Vasumitra said that he will not get intimidated by such threats. He justified in his post that he criticized Ambedkar having reviewed him and his work of “Buddha and his Dhamma”.

In 2019, had published a book titled “Ambedkar and His Dhamma”. K. Santhanam, the state executive member of the party in Tamil Nadu had released it.  Ranganayakamma had released a book in Telugu titled that roughly translates to “Solution to caste problem: Buddha is not enough, Ambedkar is not enough, Marx is essential”. This book was translated into Tamil by Kottravai alias Nirmala, the wife of Vadivel Murugan. This book criticizes Ambedkar and his ideas about annihilating caste.

A Tribute to Drama that went unnoticed

Art is a form of life without which people would not sustain. It is the only medium through which our heart connects to our soul. It not only connects to your soul, but it connects to each and every soul that witnesses the art.

“Art is not always about pretty things. It is about who we are, what happened to us and how our lives are affected.”
– Elizabeth Broun

An exceptionally staged drama comes up early in the movie. The drama shows King Aurangzeb as an old, withered man, who is in the last stage of his life. He tries to block a piece of music from entering his ears, but eventually ends up enjoying it. He then realizes how much of a fool he had been to believe that he could live without Art. Such is the imbalance it creates when any form of Art has been destroyed or kept aside.

A special mention to this sequence is that it is almost a 10 minute shot, filmed without any cuts. The sequence was done to maintain the reality as much as possible, and to probably give the much needed respect to the art of Drama.

Vijay Sethupathi as “Ayya” is beyond any saying. With a minimum screen time, people thought why would Vijay Sethupathi even agree to do such an “extended cameo”. That’s where people are wrong about him, by looking at the screen time of their star, rather than the screen space. The screen space for “Ayya” is beyond Vijay Sethupathi himself. Probably, Vijay Sethupathi realized the depth of the character and its extrapolations to have agreed to play “Ayya”.

When you look closely at Ayya’s life journey in the movie, you are actually shown the way how Theatre has been perceived by the people at various times of its existence.

The scene where Ayya is on his way to his house, he witnesses a series of events that makes him wonder if he is even relevant to the current state of things. Even the house that he lives in has gone down a little as the roads have been re-layed one above the other. This symbolises the beating the art of Drama Theatre has undergone. Beautifully written and coerced as a reflection of thought of Ayya’s.

“நான் சாகுற வரைக்கும் என்னோட ரசிகர்களின் கண் முன்னாடி நின்னு நடிக்கனும்னு ஆசை.”

~Till my death, I would like to act in front of my audience.

He gives a beautiful reason for that as well.

“எனக்கு இது புடிச்சிருக்கு, நல்லதோ கெட்டதோ உடனே என் கிட்ட சொல்லிடுறாங்க.”

~I love it this way, because be it good or bad I get the result of my performance right away.

Such is the love and dedication a true theatre artist would have. The movie’s first 30-40 minutes is just pure bliss. The soul of the movie is this 40 minutes. If there hadn’t been such a strong premise, there wouldn’t have been such an impact on the rest of the movie.

Right from the start when the Director-Actor Mouli appears, you sense he is going to carry the whole film alongside “Ayya”. That’s exactly what he does. Such a beauty to watch him on screen.

Govind Menon’s background score is just so serene and peaceful. My God!! You have seen his work in 96, and he continues to do the same here. Pure magic. Pure divine.

Once the premise is set, the movie takes a turn that is completely unexpected, completely different. You simply don’t know what to expect with this, you simply sit in awe with the way things are unfolding here. We are then being taken into rollercoaster of emotions and fun filled rides, along with the hard hitting reality of how the soul of Drama Theatre – “Acting” has been used up by the business minds, commercialized to the extent that we are not able to find it anymore.

There are scenes where the reshoots of a scene have been done numerous times, and you might even wonder if those could have been trimmed to make it rightly enjoyable. Probably the reason for not trimming those were to strongly emphasize on the fact that acting is not something that can just be brought out by everyone. It is a form of art that has to be mastered over and over with practice and dedication. If you watch those retakes closely, it takes a dig at the self proclaimed stars who can’t even casually look in the other direction for a shot.

“Sir, neenga edhuvume panna venam sir, neenga chumma nillunga podhum, na shot edhuthukren.”

“Sir orey oru last shot sir, please. Konjam paathu pannunga, sir.”

“Sir, edhuvume set aala sir innikku. Nalaikku pannikalama.”

These scenes are a complete laugh riot, and at the same time, it brings out the plight of the directors who are forced to work with people without their consent.

A debate in the movie goes this way – “The mentality of the audience has changed, but the filmmakers and the producers do not want to accept the fact that people are acknowledging the variety in filmmaking.” This is actually very true. A good chunk of the audience still watch movies for entertainment, but there has been a shift in the mindset of people for better movies in recent times. People have started to ignore complete masala entertainers that were popular 5-10 years back.

The audience has always wanted something unique, something different, but when they see it on screen, they sometimes fail to realize or acknowledge that this is what they have been looking for. They need a little push. They just need to let go of any previous experiences, then they would be able to feel about the movie in a different way.

Seethakaathi is not just a movie.
Seethakaathi is an epitome of Art.
Seethakaathi is a tribute to the Art of Drama Theatre.
Seethakaathi is a tribute to all the true artists of any Art.

Indian and Chinese soldiers exchange blows along border in Sikkim; several injured

An aggressive confrontation occurred between Indian and Chinese troops along the border in Sikkim’s Naku La sector, at an altitude of more than 5000 metres. Four Indian soldiers and seven Chinese soldiers were injured in the stand-off as they exchanged blows. Stand-offs like this typically involve pushing and shoving, and sometimes escalate into stone-throwing and brawls.

Around 150 soldiers were involved in the incident that occurred on Sunday morning. The stand-off was later resolved after a dialogue at the local level. The cause of the altercation between the soldiers was the undefined border issue between the two countries.

The stand-off came a day after Nepal had raised concerns over India constructing a link road along the Indo-Nepal border. India, meanwhile, has dismissed Nepal’s claims.

Hunger strikes Haiti as world crisis looms

Haiti is no stranger to crisis, and amongst all the already existing issues like widespread unemployment, unrest, high rates of poverty and poor healthcare, the global pandemic has struck Haiti worse than ever, with the existing hunger crisis becoming more worrying than ever because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a press address, Haiti’s World Food Programme Director Pierre Honnorat had told that he expects hunger to “get much worse.”

With more than a million Haiti nationals already hunger-stricken, even before the outbreak, thanks to the depreciating value of the Haitian currency, and restrictions causing a disruption in the economic activities, Honorat said that those citizens who are more vulnerable will be “pushed deeper into poverty”, and that the country’s reliance on imported foods also leaves it particularly vulnerable to the pandemic’s global economic toll.

More than 34,000 people live in 22 settlement camps across Haiti, as per reports from the International Organization for Migration. Haiti has so far reported 100 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and 11 deaths, according to PAHO Director Etienne, who says that the probability of further spread is “extremely high.”

Germany sees rise in infections post lockdown release

Cases of coronavirus infections accelerated just 4 days after Germany released its lockdown restrictions, raising concerns about situation going out of hand once again.

Under pressure from leaders of 16 federal states, Angela Merkel, the country’s chancellor eased the lockdown restrictions on Wednesday, thereby restarting social life and helping the economy to recover. She had also announced an “emergency brake” to allow for the re-imposition of restrictions if infections pick up again.

The move to ease restrictions has come under severe criticism with several experts warning that the virus could start spreading again. Karl Lauterbach, a Social Democrat lawmaker and professor of epidemiology, said in a tweet that the R rate (reproduction rate) is expected to go over 1 and that Germany might return to exponential growth of cases again. He added that the ‘loosening measures were poorly prepared’.

The Robert Koch Institute said on Sunday the confirmed number of new coronavirus cases had increased by a daily 667 to 169,218, while the daily death toll had risen by 26 to 7,395.

Although Germany has had the sixth-largest COVID-19 caseload in Europe it has managed to contain fatalities from the highly infectious respiratory disease thanks to widespread and early testing and a healthcare system that is well-run and well-funded.

Spain eases lockdown restrictions but warns citizens to exercise caution

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made a move towards easing the country’s strict lockdown starting tomorrow, but has warned that the threat is completely eradicated.

In an address to the press on Saturday, Sanchez said that they had managed to reclaim 99% of the land lost by COVID-19, and that the citizens should exercise a high amount of caution since the virus was still there.

The death toll had fell to 179 on Saturday, down from 229 the previous day, while the cumulative death toll rose to 26,478 the day before, as reported by their health ministry.

Close to 51 percentage of the population will be progressing into the first phase of what seems to be a four phased lockdown ease. This percentage will be determined after making sure that the regions they lived in fulfilled the necessary conditions imposed by the government. In specific regions, restaurants and shops will open at reduced capacity, and museums, gyms and hotels will open their doors for the first time in nearly two months.

Barcelona and Madrid, which are two of the biggest cities in the country, haven’t made the cut for phase 1.

Since the tourism industry contributes upto 12% of the country’s revenue, hotels in the phase 1 regions have been allowed to open all the rooms and nature tourism for groups of 10 have been allowed.

Nepal objects to construction of link road to Kailash-Mansarovar, India dismisses

Nepal’s  Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, issued a press release raising concerns over India’s ‘unilateral’ decision to construct a road that passes through Nepali territory.

In its statement, it had noted that the unilateral act of India went against the understanding reached between the 2 counties including at the level of the Prime Ministers, that a solution to the boundary issues would be worked out through negotiations.

Nepal bases its claims on the Sugauli Treaty of 1816 that says that all territories to the east of Mahakali river that includes Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belong to Nepal.

However, the Government of India has refuted Nepal’s concerns saying that the road going through Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district lies completely within the territory of India.  Mr. Anurag Srivastava, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) mentioned on Saturday that “The road follows the pre-existing route used by the pilgrims of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra”.

He added that the boundary delineation exercise with Nepal is an ongoing matter and expressed India’s commitment to resolving outstanding boundary issues through diplomatic channels and in the spirit of maintaining friendly relations with Nepal.

India, on Friday inaugurated the link road to Kailash-Mansarovar that stretches from Ghatiabagarh and terminates at Lipulekh Pass, the gateway to Kailash-Mansarovar. It is located at a height of 17,060 ft and was constructed by the Border Roads Organization.

Narco-terrorist with links to Pak nabbed

The National Investigation Agency along with Punjab and Haryana police arrested Ranjit Singh, a narco-terrorist with links to ISI controlled networks in Pakistan. Also known as Rana alias Cheeta, he is said to be a ‘big fish’ in the narco-terrorism networks. He is also said to have aided Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Riyaz Naikoo who was neutralized by the security forces a few days back. It seems that the input shared by Punjab police had played an important role in gunning down Naikoo.

Along with Singh, his brother Gagandeep alias Bhola was also arrested from Begu village in Sirsa district of Haryana

The NIA in a statement said that Singh was functioning as a conduit for Pakistan based terror groups to push drugs into India which is used for financing terror activities. He is said to have engaged in smuggling large consignment of drugs and illegal weapons into India through the Attari border and also across the Indo-Pak border in Jammu & Kashmir.

Singh along with another accused Iqbal Singh alias Shera were the prime accused in a case of heroin smuggling where 532 kg of the drug was hidden and brought in rock salt consignment from Pakistan. The Custom officials had seized it in the Attari border checkpoint in June 2019. This was done through an elaborate network of importers, custom house agents and transporters.

The NIA said that Singh was also the prime accused when Punjab police busted a terror funding module of Hizbul Mujahideen on April 25 with the arrested of Hilal Ahmad. This money was being sent to Naikoo, the slained Hizb terrorist.

PC welcomes Centre’s decision to hike government borrowing

Former Finance Minister and Senior Congress Leader P. Chidambaram welcomed the decision taken by Government of India to borrow an additional 4.2 lakh crores thereby taking the projected fiscal deficit to 5.38%.

Mr. Chidambaram had in a statement said that he and other members of the Congress party appealed to the Centre to shed its reservations about fiscal deficit and borrow more for 2020-21.

However, he added that “It is not enough to borrow more unless the amount is used to provide relief to poor and restart the economy. We look forward to the revised expenditure budget for 2020-21.”

The Centre had earlier announced that it will borrow ₹4.2 lakh crores more than the budgeted ₹7.8 lakh crores for the fiscal year, taking the total government borrowings to ₹12 lakh crores.

The fall in tax and non-tax revenues due to the ensuing lockdown and the possibility of falling short of the disinvestment target of ₹2.1 lakh crore has made the government revise its budgeted estimates.
