Brijesh Thakur challenges conviction in Muzaffarpur shelter home case

In February 2020, a Delhi Court had issued a life term to convict Brijesh Thakur in association with the sexual assault case of over 40 girls at a shelter home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

He is a former legislator and owner of the NGO called Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti, which manages the place where the incident took place.

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the appeal filed by Thakur.

A division bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi, Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar, and advocate Pramod Dubey issued the notice challenging the court order.

The lawyers said that the trial conducted the hearing in a “hurried manner”, and  violated their right to free speech and fair trial.

Thakur’s appeal said that requests made by and on behalf of the Appellant were dismissed in a “mechanical manner” without applying a judicial mindset to conclude the trial.

He added that the appellant’s statutory and fundamental right was denied as the hours of the trial were extended beyond normal court timings.

The appeal also mentioned that the court failed to recognise that for a case related to rape, the prosecution must firstly establish that the accused is potent and capable of committing the alleged act.

According to the appeal, neither the Bihar Police or the Central Bureau of Investigation conducted the potency test of the accused and his wife did not place her statement under section 161 Cr.P.C on record.

The Supreme Court had transferred the case from Bihar to a Delhi court and ordered the judge to complete it within six months, following which the trial court framed charges against 20 accused in the case, according to ANI.

“Let religious bigotry and blasphemy be gone forever” Rajini on Karuppar Koottam

Karuppar Koottam, a group of “Periyarists” (followers of E.V. Ramasamy Naicker known by his followers as Periyar), Communist ideologues and DMK sympathizers came under fire for their abusive videos on Hindu God Murugan and other Hindu Gods. They have been indulging in targeted attacks against Hindus posting videos abusing Hindu Gods, Hindus and Brahmins for a long time under the garb of ‘rationalism’. In the series titled “Aabasa Puranam” (Porn Puranam), members of the Karuppar Kootam (especially Surendhar Natarajan) use vulgar language and trash-talk Hindu Gods like Murugan, Saraswathi, Brahma, etc.

Their comments on Hindu God Murugan and the Kandha Sashti Kavasam had sparked outrage across Tamil Nadu.

In light of this, Rajinikanth has jumped in to express his strong condemnation against the Karuppar Koottam for their vile comments on Hindu God Murugan and Kandha Sashti Kavasam, a hymn dedicated to the God.

In his tweet, he said

My heartfelt congratulations to the Government of Tamil Nadu for the prompt action taken by the Government against those who had slandered Lord Murugan and Kanda Sashti Kavasam and who had hurt the hearts of millions of Tamil people and made this racist act unforgettable in their lives. Atleast from now, let there be no more religious bigotry and blasphemy. It should be done away with. All religions are accepted. Victory to Kandan (Lord Muruga).

Tamil Nadu Cyber Cell has now taken down all the videos of the rabid Youtube channel.

Apart from this, the cybercrime branch has arrested two other members of the Karuppar Kootam identified as Somasundaram and Guna.

Earlier, the police arrested Senthilvasan Muthusamy who shared closed ties with the DMK. Surendar Natarajan who anchored the show Aabasa Puranam surrendered at the Ariyankuppam police station in Puducherry and was later sent to judicial custody.

The DMK has been feeling the heat as evidences of its connections with members of the rabid Youtube channel has been surfacing.

This is the story of how News 18 Tamil Nadu journalist and Ramnath Goenka award winner Gunasekaran became the reason for 17 year old Naveena’s death

Naveena was just another 17 year old girl with ambitions. Her father Angappan was a daily wage worker while her mother was a homemaker. They lived in a village called V. Palayam near Vizhupuram town in Tamil Nadu. Chirpy and talkative that she was said to be, Naveena dreamed of becoming a nurse so that she could serve people. But she ended up as a burnt corpse. She was harassed by Senthil, a Dalit man, who had made advances on her despite she rejecting him on his face.

Naveena who was studying in class 12 then, went to school in a bus operated by a private transport service. Senthil belonging to Indira Nagar was the driver of this bus. He started stalking Naveena and pursued her. At one point, Senthil’s moves breached limits and became a nuisance in Naveena’s life. He had even come to Naveena’s house and created ruckus. She later with her parents filed a complaint against her stalker at the Vizhupuram West police station who was arrested and later released on bail.

But even after that, Naveena continued to be harassed. She stopped halfway through class 12 and discontinued her studies owing to her own safety and to stay away from Senthil.

Senthil uses the Dalit card to his advantage

Meanwhile Senthil was found on railway tracks with his one hand and one leg severed. After taking treatment at a hospital for a few weeks he complained at the office of Vizhupuram Superintendent of Police saying that Naveena’s parents and relatives had sent armed men to hack him to death.

Naveena belongs to the Vanniyar community. The Vanniyars and Dalits have always been at loggerheads with each other as the latter is accused of targeting and wooing young girls from the Vanniyar community, and eloping with them to cities only to be abused or abandoned later. In the year 2014, the Madras High Court unearthed a burgeoning ‘fake marriage cartel’ in which marriages were registered even if the bride and groom were not present. More than 3500 such fake marriages were exposed from just two registrar offices -Royapuram and Chennai North.

Coming back to Senthil’s story, investigations done by the police and fact finding team by A Marx and Sukumaran found that Senthil had got drunk and lied down on the railway track when a train hit him. He had lost his one hand and leg in this accident brought upon by himself in order to make it look like a Dalit falling victim to the ‘oppression’ of Vanniyars.

Enter Gunasekaran and ilk

News 18 Tamil Nadu and other mainstream Tamil News channels sensationalized this issue by spinning a narrative that portrayed Senthil as a victim of caste violence. “Doesn’t a Dalit have a right to love a 17 year old girl?” were the levels to which the debates stooped with Senthil being hailed as a hero. Dravidian outfits like Dravida Kazhagam and Dalit parties like VCK parroted along and started their usual rhetorics.

Even before the investigations revealed Senthil’s false claims, News 18 Tamil Nadu’s Senior Editor Mu. Gunasekaran conducted debates based on the false premise that Senthil was the victim.

That tragic day

On 29th July 2016, Senthil had waited outside Naveena’s house with a can of petrol for her parents to leave. He was also drunk that day. He had forced her to marry him and threatened to set her on fire if she didn’t agree. Later, he poured petrol on himself and Naveena, doused himself on fire and grabbed hold of her, burning her too. Senthil was charred to death on the spot while Naveena succumbed to severe burns at the JIPMER hospital a few days later on August 3.

Till today, Naveena’s parents, relatives and the people of the village blame the mainstream Tamil news channels especially News 18 Tamil Nadu Gunasekaran and his compatriots in Puthiyathalaimurai and other news channels, for falsely peddling a narrative that killed Naveena. From the beginning, they had given a caste/Dalit victim spin to the entire issue without investigating the truth. Even after the truth came to light, these news channels and political outfits kept their mouths zipped and went on about their usual business. They had even taken down the debates conducted on these topics from Youtube and other social media.

Gunasekaran later absolved himself of the crime by conveying a condolence message through a ‘facebook post’.

In their quest for narratives, an innocent life was lost.

Gunasekaran later got Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award.

Naveena is yet to get justice.

Dalit Positive Movement files complaint against The Caravan for defaming religious beliefs of SC/ST communities

Dalit Positive Movement, a Dalit & Other Backward Castes rights initiative has lodged a complaint against The Caravan magazine for carrying an article with casteist content and making misleading demeaning statements about Hindu faith and beliefs.

The article claimed that Dalits consider Mahishasur, (the evil demon) as their ancestor and that Durga Pooja is taken offensive by them.

In its Twitter handle, The Caravan posted “The Indian diaspora is delighted that Diwali is commemorated in the White House. It does not care that the “good” Hindu goddess Durga’s killing of the evil Mahishasur is deeply offensive to many Dalits and Adivasis, for whom Mahishasur is an ancestor“.

Many Dalits had objected for associating them with the evil demon. The comments section of the article had majority of the comments calling out the casteist and defamatory remarks against the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe community. Many condemned the gross misrepresentation of Hindu faith and for distorting Puranas.

The Dalit Positive Movement has registered a complaint with the Commissioner of Police, New Delhi and  Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Afghan teenager shoots Taliban terrorists who killed her parents

Qamar Gul, an Afghani teenage girl shot two Taliban insurgents dead on Tuesday, to avenge her parents’ death. Gul’s parents were killed by the Taliban after being mercilessly dragged out of their home, due to suspicions over aiding the government. She had emerged out of the house with an AK-47 and had gunned down the Taliban terrorists who had shot her parents.

The incident happened when a group of 40 insurgents stormed the village of Geriveh, in central Ghor province, where 16-year-old Qamar Gul was living with her parents and brother.

It is common for the Taliban in Afghanistan to target people who they suspect having governmental links. Gul’s father was suspected to have been a secret informer to the government, and had hence been targeted. In recent months the militants have also stepped up their attacks against security forces, despite having agreed to peace talks with Kabul.

Soon after she had shot them down, insurgents had emerged from nowhere to attack Qamar and her brother. By then villagers had surrounded their house, an had taken the both of them to a safer place. Wion News reported that Qamar’s age is estimated between 14-16, since Afghanistanis did not know their age accurately.

Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhaskar lash out on Twitter at Kangana’s ‘B-grade actresses’ jibe

A tweetstorm ensued following Kangana Ranaut’s accusations at Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhaskar. Kangana had interviewed on Republic’s newshour with Arnab Goswami, where she had reportedly ‘sought justice for Sushant Singh Rajput’s death’. She went on to accuse the two actresses of being ‘B-grade actresses’ and had said, “You are both better looking than Alia Bhatt and Ananya. You both are better actresses. Why don’t you get work? Your whole existence is proof of nepotism. What are you telling me about how happy you are with the industry?”.

Lashing out on Twitter to these allegations, Taapsee Pannu had shared video proof to contradict the allegations against her, saying that all her interviews thus far had been contradictory, and that replied to a throwback video of Kangana talking about insider-outsider debate, wherein the ‘Queen’ actress had stated that it doesn’t matter where a person comes from as each one has their own struggle. “Arre !!???? Toh ab final kya hai ? Matter karta hai to be from the ‘inside’ or no. Yaar yeh sab kuch bohot confusing hota jaa raha hai Zany face I’m gonna sign out of this before I forget ki mera stand kya hai”.

Swara Bhaskar also went on to share this clip and had replied to it, saying “Kangana ran parallel cinema with ‘Pather Panchali’ in 1955. She started feminism with ‘Queen’ in 2013, but before that, in 1947, she got India’s independence. – says an unknown needy outsider.”

Kangana has been in the news since the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, claiming to seek justice for his death.

BREAKING: Chinese army remain at Finger 5 despite talks, GoI says next few days will be ‘crucial’

After several rounds of disengagement talks at different levels, China has not put its words into action. According to government sources, Chinese forces still remain in the Finger 5 area of the Pangong Tso lake. Though there has been some ‘thinning’, sources from the government reportedly said.

“Next few days will be crucial”.  government sources said.

Earlier, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a ‘frank and in-depth exchange of views’ regarding the recent developments in the western sector of India-China border areas. Both sides agreed to expeditiously complete the disengagement process along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The statement issued by the India’s Ministry of External Affaris observed that both sides should observe and respect the LAC and not take unilateral action that will alter the status quo and work together to avoid any incident that could disturb peace and tranquillity along the border.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also confirmed the de-escalation and said on July 6 that progress has been made on frontline troops taking effective measures to disengage and ease tensions.

As a first sign of de-escalation, the Chinese PLA withdrew its troops from the Galwan Valley as decided during the high level talks between the two militaries. However, it seems that they have not withdrawn from Finger 5 area of the Pangong Tso.

Meanwhile on July 20, a jointed naval exercise called dubbed as the ‘mini-Malabar’ took place in Indian Ocean. The US Navy’s USS Nimitz – a carrier battle group conducted a PASSEX (passage exercise) along with the Indian Navy’s INS Sahyadri, INS Shivalik, INS Kamorta and INS Rana warships near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

China’s Three Gorges Dam poses impending doom as it threatens to flood half of China

China prepares for another disaster, this time ‘man-made’, as Chinese authorities opened the floodgates to the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest power station, as levels rise. This has been reported to be the worst flood in China in a hundred years, with the Yangtze River threatening to flood half of China.

Millions of people have been evacuated, as people are comparing this to the biblical flood.  It has already inundated most of the Hubei province, and the waters are steadily moving towards the eastern part of China. Global Times reported that China is fighting a severe flood disaster that has hit more than 20 million people in southern China. The Three Gorges Dam has contributed to mitigating the flood. At 8:00 pm on Sunday, the Yangtze River’s second flood of this year steadily passed the Three Gorges Dam.

The Three Gorges Dam has been problematic ever since its conception, and has been constantly berated by experts worldwide for its poor construction and strength. This dam, if it collapses, has the ability to completely submerge the entirety of southern China. The dam was a pet project of the late Premier Li Peng and a monumental pride of the nation when it blocked and diverted Asia’s largest river in 1997.

Elon Musk aids launch of South Korea’s first ever missile satellite

Elon Musk owned SpaceX advanced South Korea’s first ever military communication satellite on Tuesday. The ANASIS-II aims to enhance the country’s ability to defend itself against its nuclear-strong neighbour in the North. This launch has made South Korea, the tenth country in the world to own a “military-only” communication satellite providing ‘permanent security and military communication’.

This mission was helmed by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It is expected to improve the countries independent operational activities in the difference front, and it is expected to reach an orbit of 36,000 kilometres in 2 weeks.

NDTV reported that Seoul is looking to enhance its military capabilities as it pushes to end an arrangement under which, if war breaks out, American commanders will have authority over their combined forces. The satellite was “expected to improve the South Korean military’s independent operational capabilities”, an official at its defence ministry told Yonhap news agency.

Seoul and Washington are security allies and the US stations 28,500 troops in the country. But their relationship has been strained in recent years, triggered by differences in their approaches to Pyongyang, and over cost-sharing responsibilities.

It is the first time such a ribbon has been seen in the village since 2012, when a baby girl was born.

“It wasn’t easy to be pregnant during a pandemic,” Sara had said to Corriere, the Italian news agency. “You were unable to go out or go and see loved ones.” She said there would be a party once the family returns from the hospital. “We will welcome everyone with open arms … It’s exciting that my little one will be among the inhabitants of Morterone, and increasing, even if only slightly, the population.”

The Guardian reported that The population of Morterone, a mountainous community in Lombardy, became 29, after the birth of Denis earlier this week. It had been 28 until Sunday, ever since the death of Invernizzi’s father.

Morterone is Italy smallest municipality because of its population. Denis’ birth is a welcome addition to Italy’s declining birth rate. Last year saw its lowest number of babies born at 4,20,170.
