Around 400 Swayamsevaks have been involved in preparing food for the migrant workers at the station. As of May 25, the RSS has fed around 10,000 migrant workers. It said that their aim is not to let anyone travelling to go hungry.

The kitchen will be functional till May 31.

Wildfires ravage Uttarakhand forests, more than 50% wildlife species at threat

Wildfires ravage Uttarakhand forests, more than 50% wildlife species at threat

While the forest fires in Australia got the world’s attention, the mainstream media ignored the ongoing Uttarakhand wildfires ravaging the Kumaon and Garhwal regions over the COVID-19 pandemic news. With temperatures rising due to the onset of summer, wildfires have been breaking out in different areas of Uttarakhand.

There are reportedly 21 wildfires in the Kumaon region and 16 in the Garhwal region. There were nine other wildfires in reserve forest areas. The state has so far reported 46 wildfires, with more than 50 hectares of forests gutted. The forest department has put the monetary loss at ₹1.32 lakh. Two people have lost their lives.

Some locals say miscreants have been setting jungles on fire. They saw two men with torches lighting the forest on fire. Other locals said a combination of revellers and a lack of moisture in the forest caused the fire.

According to Jai Raj, head of the Uttarakhand forest force, one person in the Kumaon division has been booked for attempting to start fires. Forest officials say they are on high alert statewide to prevent such an act.

Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing: The Other Media, its ‘Nity’ Gritties and The Engineering of Social Unrest

Consider this. Until 2018, India was a net exporter of copper. Its export of refined copper products for the year 2017-18 was 378,555 tonnes. However, it fell down drastically to 47,917 tonnes in 2018-19. Replying to an unstarred question posed by Majeed Memon of the NCP, Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal submitted in the Rajya Sabha that the domestic production and exports of refined copper declined due to the closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter plant since May 2018. Sterlite, which has an annual production capacity of 4 lakh tonnes per annum, accounted for 40% of the country’s total copper production.

Now consider this. According to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade, Pakistan’s copper exports to China stood at USD 308.17 million for 2019, up from around USD 35 million in 2017.

Multiple media reports belonging to Pakistan reported that Pakistan’s copper export to China increased by 400% giving a boost to local industries. These reports citing a report of the Chinese Economic Net, placed the value of exports at USD 550 million for 2019. Though the numbers do not fall in place, it can be seen that there is an unprecedented surge in copper exports from Pakistan to China.

The point of this comparison is not to convey that Sterlite’s closure was a doing of China or Pakistan.  However, it does tell how a social unrest in a southern town of Tamil Nadu was taken advantage of by these two countries.

Similarly, the Neutrino project faced protests where repeated attempts by scientists to explain to the locals about the project went in vain. The Salem 8-lane highway project too met with the same fate. Misleading and false rhetorics were also constructed on the port-led coastal development plan of Sagarmala. It’s not just that development projects of the present regime are being targeted. The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant faced similar hurdles.

All these have something in common. They are protests supported or spearheaded by ‘activists’ who are either supported by or have their own organizations which receives blessings in cash and kind from outside. These activists are projected as the voices of victims by an able and a thriving ecosystem.

So, who are these activists? Why do they do what they do? From where do they get support? What is the N-A-M troika?  To seek answers to these questions, we will take the example of one entity.

The Other Media

This is not a term ascribed to a non-mainstream media. The Other Media (TOM) is an FCRA-NGO with the registration number DL 231660085. It was founded by Rev. Earnest Deenadayalan in the year 1992 as a centre for ‘supporting people’s organizations and movements’. It goes on to say in its website that its mandate includes providing “campaigns, advocacy, communications, research training, and scientific support to and mobilising solidarity for community struggles against social and environmental injustice”. It runs many ‘campaigns’ like ‘Community Environmental Monitoring (CEM)’, International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal and Occupational Health Campaign. Under the CEM, there are several projects run for different purposes. While some of their campaigns like the one against Unilever’s Mercury Pollution in Kodaikanal is praiseworthy, a closer look at TOM’s books and its associated persons raises serious questions.

TOM majorly receives funding from its regular donors Association for India’s Development, Global Green Grants Fund, The Takagi Fund For Citizen Science, Pesticide Action Network North America, Health Care Without Harm, etc. However, the organization has also received funds from the following questionable entities:

1) In 2012, TOM got ₹71550 as donations from World Association For Christian Communication, Canada – an organization that claims to promote ‘social justice’ to people of all faiths, ethnicities, and cultures worldwide. The same organization contributed ₹5,76,990 in 2011.

2) Another institution named Christian Conference of Asia, an ecumenical organization representing more than 100 denominations across several countries claiming to work towards ‘social justice’ had donated ₹65160 in 2011.

3) Two other organizations named Catholic Organization for Relief and Development Aid (CORDAID) of Netherlands and Trócaire, the official overseas development agency of Catholic Church in Ireland, have contributed millions of rupees during the period from 2007 to 2011. These two organizations have contributed the most to TOM during this period.

4) TOM has also received funds from Bread for the World (BfW), a “globally active development and relief agency of the Protestant Churches in Germany”. BfW openly claims to “influence political decisions through lobbying” which it does by funding the thought leaders and members of civil society.

The 2011-12 Annual Report on Receipt and Utilization of Foreign Contribution by Voluntary Associations mentions that amongst the purposes for which foreign contribution was received, the highest amount went towards “Activities other than those mentioned” i.e., the proceeds did not go towards purposes like rural development, construction or maintenance of schools/colleges’, welfare of orphans, scholarships, etc.

While TOM’s account statements (Form FC-6) mention the nature of association to be “educational, social”, all their donations have been marked under “Activities other than those mentioned”.

What are these “Activities other than those mentioned” are they referring to? Well, it gets quite clear from TOM’s mandate – “mobilizing communities for social and environmental justice”, a fancier way of saying “causing trouble by instigating people against democratically elected governments” under the guise of voicing for social and environmental issues. Considering that they have received contributions from entities like CORDAID and Troicare, these “other activities” can also be taken to be an attempt at changing the religious demography.

This is not just TOM. Currently Tamil Nadu has the highest number of FCRA NGOs and is probably the second highest recipient of foreign contribution after Delhi. Incidentally, all the protests against development projects are also concentrated in this region.

The ‘Nity’ Gritties

The Other Media never finds itself getting mentioned in mainstream platforms and discourses. We don’t see them getting quoted in newspapers, TV or on social media. Infact, the organization does not even have a presence in social media. All they have is just a website. Probably it is meant to be that way considering their shady background. But, we have persons associated with TOM very much active, making news and noises. They write articles for certain news portals, give interviews, participate in panel discussions, tweet, protest, and engage in other activities that would keep them in the limelight. They get projected as ‘activists’ claiming to represent the marginalized and the voiceless. One such ‘activist’ is Nityanand Jayaraman aka Nity.

Now, Nity is a person that we need to watch out for. His twitter bio says that he is a writer and nothing more. In other platforms where he writes, he is identified as a writer and a social activist. In news reports appearing in the mainstream media he will be mentioned as someone belonging to Community Environmental Monitoring or Coastal Resource Centre or Save Ennore Campaign all of which are initiatives under TOM. But, there will be no mention of TOM in these platforms. However, he is the Chairperson or Chief Functionary of TOM.

While striving for social and environmental justice is a laudable pursuit, what people like Nity advocate is anarchy. Speaking at the India Today Conclave in January 2019, Mr. Nityanand says:

Courts are an extremely fickle partner. And.. I also find that often times, the courts are not as powerful as they used to be. There is not the respect for the courts that there used to be. And.. also the final thing is the courts treat big polluters different from small polluters. There is a clear class difference. They don’t want to take on the big guys. In Tamil Nadu, right now after the floods, they are talking about removal of encroachments, but none of the lordships talk about the big encroachments – you have entire power plants and ports built inside water bodies, who will remove them? They are encroachments too.

So, where else would ports and power plants be built Mr. Nity? At your posh house in Besant Nagar?

In another interview with The Wire, Nityanand says

I think the neutrino [observatory] will get built. You should not have any fears on that count. I’d rather it doesn’t. But I think it would be unfortunate if it does without so much as an honest debate where each side is prepared to live with a scenario where what they want may not be the outcome.

The Engineering of Social Unrest

Let us take the example of Sterlite protests in which Nityanand was one of those who were at the forefront apart from evangelist Mohan C. Lazarus, Fathima Babu and Samarendra Das of the London based Foil Vedanta group. The Sterlite protests is where all our puzzle pieces fall in place – FCRA-NGOs with foreign donations, ‘activists’, and a certain section of media houses come together to achieve a certain purpose.

The media is the vehicle on which all these people ride to engineer social unrest. Portals like The News Minute and The Wire repeatedly kept carrying articles of Nityanand Jayaraman. The News Minute carried an article and a video of Nityanand Jayaraman giving a response to a video by Let’s Make Engineering Simple that sought to give a bigger picture of the pollution crisis and questioned the motivation of Nityanand Jayaraman in targeting Vedanta to which he conveniently replied

People choose and pick their battles based on what they think is deserving of their attention.

It is through news outlets like these that people like Nityanand Jayaraman get portrayed as an enlightened intellectual and an activist. Together they manufacture opinions and build narratives that further leads to social tensions.

Beware of the NAM Troika

On the outside, these organizations, activists and media seem like they stand for justice. But all of them come from a certain political and ideological position. They scratch each other’s back to help them promote themselves at the cost of lives and livelihood. Together, they form an ecosystem. Together, they form what is called the NAM troika – the NGO-Activist-Media troika.

This ecosystem of foreign funded organizations, academia, media and other outfits peddle a certain narrative that glorifies certain values and exaggerates half-truths. They are hell belt on shoving their opinions down the throat of people. They must be an even angrier lot now, considering that the government has stopped the money flow through problematic organizations into India by cancelling many of the FCRA licenses.

It is not the intention of this post to vilify the organizations and individuals mentioned here. However, it is important to shed light on the foreign funding aspects of the organizations and the activists associated with such organizations. The NAM troika not just influences policy making and decisions by nurturing opinion makers and thought leaders to stand against development projects, but also spread anarchy knowingly or unknowingly. We are country that is governed by rule of law and in a country governed by rule of law, institutions upon which power is bestowed by the people and the Constitution should have the right to fulfil the developmental aspirations of the people and deliver justice. Not by those whose source of revenue are questionable.

Mandir Wahin Bann Raha Hai: Construction of Grand Ram Temple begins at Ram Janmabhoomi

The Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra on Tuesday (May 26) announced that the construction of a grand temple on the Ram Janmabhoomi has commenced. The announcement was made by the Trust’s Chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das after performing puja at the newly built makeshift structure at Manas Bhawan that house Lord Ram Lalla.

Earlier, during the land-levelling work, broken idols of Gods and Godesses, 5 foot Shivalingam, pillars, black touchstone were unearthed.

WHO temporarily puts a hold on hydroxychloroquine testing

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that the organisation has temporarily suspended tests on the malarial drug as a possible cure/vaccine for coronavirus. In a press appearance online, Tedros was heard saying, “The executive group has implemented a temporary pause of the hydroxychloroquine arm within the Solidarity trial while the safety data is reviewed by the data safety monitoring board”, wherein the Solidarity trial refers to the clinical testing for the potential use of the drug as a coronavirus vaccine.

These announcements come after US President Donald Trump has claimed that hydroxychloroquine could be a potential cure for the disease, although he claims that he has stopped taking it ever since.

In an online briefing, Mike Ryan, WHO’s head of emergencies warned the world in terms of there being a potential second wave. He also said that discussions are underway with China in terms of the origin of the virus, although there has been no set date for launching a scientific investigation on the country. Ryan also urged the countries to continue being on the lookout for infections, despite the death rates dropping worldwide.

To date, more than 5.4 million infections have been confirmed worldwide since the virus first emerged in December of last year, with over 345,000 deaths globally.

Singapore’s economy hit badly, downgrades its GDP again

Singapore cuts its GDP forecast for the third time this year, as their GDP seems to have been battered by the pandemic.

The country’s economy has taken a major hit due to the pandemic, as the first quarter saw a 0.7% year-on-year decrease, warning of a more severe hit in the days to come. Economists say that the country is headed for its deepest ever recession.

The first signs of a potential recession was noticed when the government cut its 2020 GDP projections to -0.5% to 1.5%, from 0.5% to 2.5% previously.

“There continues to be a significant degree of uncertainty over the length and severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as the trajectory of the economic recovery,” said Gabriel Lim, permanent secretary at the ministry of trade and industry.

There has also been a downgrade in the non-oil domestic exports, from -0.5% to 1.5% previously to -4.0% to -1.0%.

Exports have proved to be a silver lining in an otherwise bleak economy, due to the increasing demand in pharmaceuticals, thanks to the pandemic.

Singapore’s finance minister is touted to address this issue on Tuesday by delivering the latest in a string of multi-billion-dollar economic packages to offset the hit to businesses and households from the pandemic later.

Another NGO caught for converting tribes, ‘Serve India Ministries’ gets served by LRPF

After the evangelical organization Gospel for Tribals Social Service Society was booked for misusing foreign funds, hate speech, and indulging in religious conversion activities of Janjatis in Telangana, another Christian NGO ‘Serve India Ministries’ of Coimbatore has been caught engaging in similar activities by the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF).

LRPF found that the evangelical organization ‘Serve India Ministries’ was involved in illegal conversion of Hindus through hate speech and enticements. A complaint has been filed by LRPF with the Ministry of Home Affairs for FCRA violations.

The complaint states that Ebenezer Samuel, the head of Serve India Ministries and the NGO was involved in large scale conversions through allurements, magic remedies, and by threatening the people of inviting ‘divine displeasure’. It charges Ebenezer for being inimical to communal harmony, multi-religious, multi-ethnic society of India.

Financial Irregularities

It was found that the NGO of Ebenezer received ₹48.92 crores as FCRA funds in last 10 years, with most of the money coming in from the US. It also notes that the tax returns filed by the organisation in India and USA do not match highlighting the fact that the organization has been filing NIL FCRA returns in India since 2010-11 while it has been filing tax returns in the USA from 2007 onwards. It also shows that for the last 4 years, the NGO has been putting substantial part of its FCRA funds in fixed deposits and deriving interest from the same.

Hate Speech Videos

There are also videos that put out the intentions of the NGOs very clear. In a video of Ebenezer Samuel delivering a speech in USA he says “we are involved in planting churches among the Hindus and Moslems and Buddhists and various other religious groups”

In another video, Ebenezer is introduced as someone who is looking to change the religious statistics of India forever.

Another video about Serve India Ministries showcased at World Missionaries Press’ 55th Anniversary Celebration says “World Missionaries Press’ Project India is aiming at liberating those in bondage of Satan for millenniums, poverty, demeaning caste system, child labour and enslaving pagan religions will all be overcome when God’s people pray, when thousands of Hindus and Muslims are baptised, when every village will have witness to Jesus.., worship groups multiply. Would you please pray for India to be saved, in this generation?”

In many such videos, non-Christians are referred to as “unsaved people”, “unreached people”, “those in bondage of Satan for millenniums”. It also goes on to say that “Whenever a Hindu faces a problem, he has to figure out which of the 33 million gods he or she worships has become angry and then do Pooja to appease that angry Hindu god. Hindus are oppressed by their own Gods!”

These are hate speeches and is an offence under Section 508 (Act caused by inducing person to believe that he will be rendered an object of the Divine displeasure) of the Indian Penal Code.

Using Children for Conversion

Serve India Ministries is also accused of using young children in their mission of conversion. The complaint notes that under the guise of ‘free tuitions’ named “Stepping Stone” and “The Egg Project”, children are made to go through Christian prayers, Gospel preaching, praying for Jesus etc.

The Stepping Stones project is pitched for getting funds from abroad. Most of the speeches of Ebenezer have references to this method for converting Hindus. Another project through which Ebenezer and his NGO attract non-Christian children is the Vacation Bible School (VBS). According to the NGO, the VBS is conducted for 20,000 children each year to expose children to Christianity. LRPF has attached numerous testimonies of children “accepting Jesus” in the annexures attached with the complaint.

Dalits as Baits

The NGO has set itself a goal of ‘training 20,000 native missionaries’ and ‘reaching 100,000 villages’ by 2020. It has been going after Dalits for their conversion activities. Atrocities committed against Dalits are quoted in almost all speeches and videos of Serve India Ministries.

Other Illegal Activities of Serve India Ministries

The NGO has also been repeatedly making statements that call Government of India as anti-Christian. Even in states where Freedom of Religion Act that prohibits forcible conversion in place, the NGO has been carrying out illegal conversions through enticements. The NGO is also accused of violating Visa norms by bringing in foreign preachers on tourist Visas for the purpose of conversion activities.

LRPF Complaint

The LRPF has requested the MHA to immediately stop FCRA inflows to Serve India Ministries and also freeze their bank accounts. It has called for a detailed enquiry of Ebenezer for his evangelic, religious conversion, miracle healing activities and also his personal assets. LRPF has also asked for the Government of India to debar all foreign citizens who came on tourist visa and engaged in activities of Serve India Ministries.

LRPF is an NGO working in the area of national security. It has been vocal about the rights of tribes and exposing fraudulent organisations.

Biden steps out for Memorial Day for the first time in months

Joe Biden made his first public appearance in two months since having been in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Biden’s last public appearance was in March, when he defeated his rival, Bernie Sanders, in the Florida elections. He was forced to self-isolate due to the coronavirus pandemic after that.

The US Democratic presidential candidate stepped out wearing a black mask and laid a wreath of white roses on Memorial Day at a ceremony in Delaware’s War Memorial Plaza.

Speaking to the press through his mask, the former vice president said, “It feels good to be out of my house,” Mr Biden told reporters through his mask, adding: “Never forget the sacrifices that these men and women made. Never, ever, forget”, and observed a moment of silence along with his wife Jill.

Memorial Day is an annual holiday in the US, honouring those who had died serving the US Military, held on the last Monday of every May. It also marks the unofficial start of summer.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also observed Memorial Day celebrations, and took part in laying the wreath along with his wife Melania.
