Twitter blocks JNU professor Anand Ranganathan citing ‘hateful conduct’ for posting a Quranic verse

Anand Ranganathan, a scientist, columnist and professor at Jawaharlal National University, was blocked by Twitter on Wednesday apparently for ‘hateful conduct’.

Professor Ranganathan had posted the English translation of a Quranic Verse in the light of Bengaluru violence and also gave reference to the text.

“Those who abuse Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a HUMILIATING punishment” 33:57. Let those Muslims who advocate the contrary have the GUTS to say they don’t believe in this order. https://t.co/7ZHiEsh1Wx

The original verse and its translation can be found here.

In response to this, Prof. Ranganathan has replied to Twitter if the verse from Holy Koran is hateful and has asked Twitter to clarify its position.

A Muslim mob in Bengaluru went on a rampage on Tuesday night in which it vandalized the KJ Halli police station and the house of Dalit Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy allegedly over a Facebook post on Prophet Mohammad by a relative of the MLA.

Following the incident many Muslims claimed on Twitter that Islam does not advocate violence. In response to this, Dr. Ranganathan had quoted the above verse.

However, the microblogging site blocked Anand Ranganathan claiming that it was a hateful content.

Many called out the selective censorship policy of Twitter and also questioned its neutrality.

Some also questioned if citing Quran amounted to blasphemy and whether Twitter is Islamophobic.

This is not the first time Dr. Ranganathan has been targeted by Twitter. Earlier his tweets were blocked or his account locked over alleged violation of Twitter rules.

Alia Bhatt’s Sadak 2 becomes the most ‘disliked video’ on YouTube amidst nepotism row

Mahesh Bhatt directed Sadak 2 is at the centre of controversy even before its release. Its trailer has become the most disliked video on YouTube in less than 24 hours of release, amidst the looming nepotism row. The trailer received 4.5 million dislikes on YouTube and over 15 million views.

This happened following a campaign, which was unveiled by fans of Sushant Singh Rajput, to make this the most disliked video on YouTube. As the insider-outsider debate keeps continuing in the media, several conspiracy theories have been floating surrounding the untimely death of Sushant Singh Rajput, as the plot has gotten thicker in the case.

There have been FIRs filed on Mahesh Bhatt’s name over the case of Sushant’s death. His name has been embroiled in controversy since the director has been rumoured to be associated with Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant’s ex-girlfriend, who is one of the prime suspects in this case.

Sadak 2 is a movie starring Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapoor, as a sequel to Sadak, the movie starring Pooja Bhatt and Sanjay Dutt which was released in 1991. It is scheduled to release on Hotstar. Notably the recent Netflix film Gunjan Saxena the Kargil girl starring Janhvi Kapoor has also been facing the flak for similar reasons.

Netflix movie about ‘The Kargil Girl’ faces flak from IAF over negative portrayal

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has written a letter to the Central Board of Film Certification, against the movie Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, which released on Wednesday on Netflix. It has alleged that the movie has an “undue negative portrayal” of the IAF. It has also sent a copy of this letter to Dharma Productions, which has produced this movie.

The letter alleges that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions had agreed to represent the IAF in a way that its authenticity was intact, and had said that it would ensure that the film will inspire the next generation of IAF officers. However, upon the release of the movie trailer, it was found that there were certain scenes and dialogues in the movie trailer which had portrayed the Air Force in a negative light.

It further read: “Before the release of the film, the IAF had requested Dharma Productions to modify or delete the objectionable scenes. However, it did not take any action.”Notably, the IAF is one of the first of the defence organisations that provided permanent commission to women officers.

The movie is based on Gunjan Saxena, the first Indian Air force woman pilot who was in combat during the 1999 Kargil conflict. She played an important role in rescuing injured soldiers during the War and was awarded the gallantry Shaurya Vir Award for her courage during the war.

When Pranab Mukherjee broke protocol to meet Tarun Vijay for Tamil

During the Krishna Janmashtami of 2014, the then President Shri Pranab Mukherjee broke protocol to meet Tarun Vijay who was a Rajya Sabha MP at that time, to hear his plea to introduce Tamil in Madras High Court.

The Office of the President is one of the busiest offices especially on festive occasions. Meeting the Head of the State on such days is almost impossible as protocols do not allow for other meetings.

However, the former President broke protocols and met Mr. Tarun Vijay out of his love and respect for both ‘Tamil’ and ‘Tamil Tarun Vijay’ as he is known for his deep passion towards the Thiruvalluvar, Thirukkural and the Tamil language as a whole.

Mr. Pranab Mukherjee had carefully gone through the memorandum of Tarun Vijay to introduce Tamil in Madras High Court.

He had appreciated Mr. Tarun Vijay’s efforts of national integration and assured of early on the matter.

Tamil Nadu has been making requests consistently to introduce Tamil as one of the court languages at the Madras High Court. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed a resolution in 2006 urging the Centre to get the President’s assent in using Tamil language for court proceedings. However, this proposal made which was referred to the Chief Justice of India for advice was rejected in 2012 after deliberations with the Supreme Court.

The proposal to make Tamil the official language was rejected earlier by the Supreme Court in 1997 and 1999.

The John Marshall Courts Building has been closed again for repairs.

Sadhguru: A contemporary spiritual guru for Young India

Today’s Indian youth are hyper-logical. They are inquisitive and like to question everything around them, which is a good thing. But at the same time, they are increasingly becoming irreverent towards elders because they feel respect for age is immaterial.

Their world is awash with tech gadgets and many hours each day are spent on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook trying to garner views & likes. For the previous generations of people, this may seem a complete and terrible waste of time, but for the post-millennium generation, they cannot stay away from this because, well, “what else is there to do?”

To ignite a spark and to help them lead their lives as better humans, there needs to be someone who can lift your spirits and also let you stay composed and humble.

An avid biker, golfer, car enthusiast, writer, artist, designer, an erstwhile business magnate, a contemporary Spiritual Guru who is equally comfortable flying a helicopter or riding a bullock cart, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is not a new name to many of India’s Gen X.

He has been a great influence in bringing a renewed interest into India’s cultural aspects and making yoga seen as a cool thing, rather than something to be pursued towards the twilight of one’s life. Thousands of young people have their testimonials on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as to how they have become better individuals in life, gained better health, gotten rid of debilitating addictions of alcohol & drugs and have even come out of suicidal tendencies by listening to and watching his videos.

Right from early 2000s, people identified Sadhguru as someone with profound knowledge in a variety of domains and started inviting him for several major events like the World Economic Forum meetings, UN environmental initiatives, etc.

Though the silent wave of spirituality was sweeping through South India till 2000s, Sadhguru envisioned that if the world has to come to peace, first the individual and the society at large needs to be at peace. So, once a sufficient number of people had been transformed into meditators through his spiritual programs, he slowly nudged them into volunteering for a wide range of projects.

  • Since 2003, as part of Isha’s ‘Action For Rural Rejuvenation’ project, over 90000 people have been taught yoga in some of the remotest places of Tamil Nadu.
  • More than 5 million+ patients have been treated through mobile & brick-n-mortar Isha Health clinics covering 7500+ villages in South India.
  • Hundreds of villagers across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have come out of alcohol addiction successfully through Isha’s ‘Gramotsavam’ initiative.
  • There are 9 Isha Vidhya schools being run in Tamil Nadu where more than 8500 students from rural background are nurtured, with >60% students under scholarship.
  • As part of the Project Green Hands (PGH) outreach wing of Isha, more than 4600 farmers have been trained till date in natural farming methods and many have successfully adapted that model to see a higher agricultural yield.
  • The Velliangiri Farmers Producers Organization (VFPO), an initiative mentored by Sadhguru directly, has been able to bring together 1000+ farmers in Coimbatore region and garner profits of >7 crore rupees in 2017-18.
  • Green School Movement of Isha guides school children across Tamilnadu for nurturing saplings, planting them and growing them into full-fledged trees. Over 35 million tree saplings have been distributed and planted by over 2 million volunteers so far.
  • Since 2017, hundreds of people across India, have now taken up Isha’s river revitalization projects, as ‘Nadi Veeras’, focusing on rapid implementation of these solutions through detailed field studies and working closely with several state Governments across India.

One needs to understand why so many young people across the world volunteer in these spiritual and social projects. Obviously, there is the feel-good factor of doing some good work that impacts society. But why do they even take the first step?

For many people like me, the first encounter with Isha Foundation and Sadhguru is through the Isha Yoga programs. Very logical in their structure and striking much deeper on the psychological plane, Isha’s programs not only teach yoga but also to live responsibly in a social environment. So, once someone experiences wonderful physical and mental health benefits through these programs, it is only natural that they want everyone else to be benefited as well.

However, increasingly more people seem to be flocking towards Sadhguru for other reasons. Sadhguru talks in fluent English and is reaching youngsters in a way that they understand and on the media platforms that they dwell on. More than 3.5 Million people follow him on Instagram, more than 6 million on FaceBook and around 5 Million on YouTube.

That is because he breaks down spirituality into something that is understandable with our own experiences and also makes it cool. Along with this Sadhguru offering his perspective on contemporary affairs – be it on government policies or on sexuality to the young crowd has made him relevant and has also helped youngsters come to a conclusion of their own on what is right and what is wrong.

Also, as a spiritual guru, he does not emphasize on any kind of belief system and opines – “The conflict in the world is not between good and evil, as is so often projected. The conflict is always between one man’s belief and another man’s belief, whether it is within the family or between nations. The moment you believe something, you are in conflict with the opposing belief. You can postpone it with moderate talk. But conflict is inevitable.”

Where dogmatic belief systems emphasize going beyond mind for growing spiritually, Sadhguru presents a seemingly contradictory view, “Once you have a questioning mind, learn to employ that to grow”, and that makes more sense to a logical person.

His progressive ideas coupled with a scientific approach presented towards traditional practices appeal highly to the current generation, just the way they would like to look at life. At his Isha Yoga Center, highly qualified people and illiterate folk together volunteer cheerfully with no one frowning upon the other, basing on financial status or academic qualifications. Such open display of social equality had been almost unheard.

He had once famously said, ‘Gurus are always contemporary’ and exemplifies it completely. Swami Vivekananda had been a tall beacon of wisdom and inspiration for many prior generations. Today’s generation might not have seen or heard Swami Vivekananda. Atleast, they should make use of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s wisdom so that they make this place a better world.

Trump relaxes H-1B Visa rules, sigh of relief for Indians working in US

The Trump administration has made provisions to relax some of the rules for H-1B visa holders, Swarajya reported.

This decision will have a significant impact for Indians working in the IT sector. The new rule will allow individuals to enter the country in case they return to the same jobs they had before the visa ban was proclaimed.

As per the advisory released by the US Department of State, even the dependents, i.e spouses and children will also be able to travel with them, news agency ANI reported.

“Travel by applicants seeking to resume ongoing employment in the United States in the same position with the same employer and visa classification,” the advisory said.

The people who will benefit from this new relaxation of the rules are going to be technical specialists, senior-level managers, and other workers with H-1B visas. This also includes Healthcare professionals and medical researchers who will contribute to the country’s efforts to recover its economy and help the US fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Travel supported by a request from a US government agency or entity to meet critical US foreign policy objectives or to satisfy treaty or contractual obligations. This would include individuals, identified by the Department of Defense or another US government agency, performing research, providing IT support/services, or engaging other similar projects essential to a US government agency,” the advisory read.

Pakistan gives China contracts to mine rare earth from Gilgit Baltistan in direct violation of international laws

In direct violation of international laws and defiance of its own Constitution, Pakistan occupied Gilgit Baltistan region has been given to Chinese mining companies by the Pakistan government to plunder the rare earth minerals in the region.

China has been given over 2000 leases for the mining of gold, uranium and molybdenum. These contracts have been awarded illegally to Chinese firms by the Pakistan government in Gilgit and Baltistan, also known as Northern Areas.

Just a few days back, China had given Pakistan $1 billion to pay the loan taken from Saudi Arabia. Since Pakistan is not in a financial position to pay the money back to China, the Imran Khan government without giving any consideration for environmental norms have allotted illegal mining contracts.

Nasir Aziz Khan, the exiled leader and Chief Spokesperson of United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP), a prominent political outfit in this region made this disclosed.

“We will expose Pakistan’s conspiracy to plunder natural resources in the forthcoming convention of the United Nations in Geneva, next month,” Aziz had told IANS over the phone.

Under article 257 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the government in Islamabad has no right to plunder natural resources in GB.

“Rules are being blatantly flouted. The media cannot report. People who raise voice in GB are being punished. In such given circumstances when no one can oppose any decision, natural resources are being looted. Pakistan is playing into the hands of China,” Aziz said.

“Local people are not consulted. Their interests have been totally ignored. The move to oblige China in the GB area also violates international laws,” the UKPMP leader who lives in Geneva, Switzerland added.

“Consequently huge dams are being blatantly constructed. Precious mines, minerals and other resources are being plundered. The entire area is under the influence of China. In lieu of giving military support to Pakistan, the Chinese are looting our land and its rich resources,” said the exiled leader of UKPNP.

Islamabad has also signed a multi-billion dollar contract with Beijing to build Diamer Bhasha dam in an area that belongs to India.
