New study on solar flares by researchers

By using Flemish supercomputers and a new combination of physical models a new study was carried out on solar flares. Plasma astrophysicists at KU Leaven have created the first self-consistent simulation of the physical processes that occur during the solar flare.

Solar flares are explosion on the surface of the Sun that releases an enormous amount of energy, equivalent to a trillion ‘Little Boy’ atom bombs exploding at the same time. Solar flares can disable radio connections and power stations on Earth in extreme cases. However, they are also at the base of stunning space weather phenomena. For example, Northern Lights, are linked to the solar flare where the photons from the light of the sun interact with earth’s magnetic field to produce stunning coloured rays.

We already know about physical processes taking place during solar flare due to satellites and telescopes. The textbook illustrations of solar flares provide a 2D representation that was so far not confirmed. The latest research has been able to confirm these illustration. Researchers at KU Leaven are now able to create such a simulation. Wenzi Ruan, as part of his doctoral research, worked on the simulation with his team of Professor Rony Keppens at the Department of Plasma Astrophysics. The researchers used the computational power of Flemish supercomputers as well as a new combination of physical models in which the microscopic effects of accelerated charged particles were taken into account in a macroscopic model.

“We converted the results of the numerical simulation into virtual observations of a solar flare.” Said Professor Rony Keppens.

“He pleaded China to help him win re-election” : Ex National Security advisor responds to Trump’s tweets about his memoir

John Bolton, an ex-National Security Advisor to the US government, in an interview responded to President Trump’s train of tweets that had extensively criticised about his memoir, “The Room Where It Happened”. Trump called Bolton a “sick puppy” and a “wacko” on Twitter and said his new memoir — set to be released next week — is “a compilation of lies and made up stories.”

Responding to these comments, Bolton said “I think it’s unbecoming of the Office of President. I think it degrades the political civil discourse in our country and [I’m] just not going to respond to him.” He added that the President wasn’t worried about people from other nations reading his book but his own. He further went on to say that this was the same man who “pleaded China’s Xi Jinping to help him win 2020’s re-election”. Many of the allegations are based on private conversations and are impossible to verify. The Trump administration has pushed back against Mr. Bolton, with the president saying the book was “made up of lies and fake stories”.

The new work – The Room Where It Happened – is due to go on sale on 23 June. In it, John Bolton paints a picture of a president whose decision-making was dominated by a desire to win the presidency again.

Former BJP MLA faces backlash over assault of religious preacher

Former BJP MLA Pabubha Manek has tried to attack Ram Katha preacher Morari Bapu, at a temple in Dwarka. It was reported that Manek was triggered by Bapu’s comments on Lord Krishna. This took place on Thursday at the Dwarkadhish temple.

According to sources, Manek had reached the VIP portion of the temple when Bapu had been addressing Poonam Maadam, a BJP MLA for Jamnagar. When the latter was about to address the media, Manek ambushed the gathering. However, Poonam intervened and took Manek away before he could harm Morari Bapu.

This incident was caught on various TV cameras and has gone viral ever since. However, Manek claimed later that he had no intention to attack the spiritual leader and that his body language was misunderstood. According to Manek, Morari Bapu recently said in a statement that Lord Krishna failed to establish Dharma in his own city of Dwarka. He had later tendered an apology.

Notably, Bapu had gone to Dwarka to apologise for his controversial remarks against Lord Krishna that he had made in 2017. In order to keep with people’s sentiments, Morari had agreed to visit the Devbhoomi Dwarka temple to pay obeisance to the deity, in the presence of MLAs like Poonam Maadam.

12-Year-Old Boy Clears HSLC Exam with first division

In Manipur, a 12-year-old boy, Issac Paulallungmaun, has secured 72 percent in Manipur high school leaving certificate (HSLC) exam thus becoming the first 12-year-old child to appear and clear the High School Leaving Certificate examination in the first division.

He got special permission from the Board of Secondary Education Manipur to appear for the HSLC exam conducted in February-March, 2020. As per rules, the Manipur BSEM exam allows only those who have completed 15-years of age; however, Issac was given permission as a “special case” after his father wrote to the education department seeking permission last year. He is now the youngest to appear for such an exam and come out with distinction.

Before giving permission a psychological test was conducted on him by the Department of Clinical Psychology, RIMS, Imphal. The boy secured an astonishing grade with an IQ of 141. The test showed that the mental health of the boy is 17 years 5 months and he had superior intellectual and development functioning.

As per the PTI reports Issac is an admirer of Sir Issac Newton because as he shares is name also thinks that he is like him.

Post results the boy said, “Results were a bit lower than I expected. I want to study Zoology and Paleontology as my interest is in animals. We must always believe in ourselves.”

Issac is eldest among all and is a resident of Kangvai in Churachandpur.

LinTlMaT – A novel statistical learning approach for tracing cell lineage

Dr. Hamim Zafar from IIT, Kanpur, in collaboration with researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, has developed a statistical learning method called ‘LinTlMaT’ that can reconstruct cell lineages for an individual organism or at the species-level.

Our body consists of many cells that function continuously to keep us alive. Though the cells in different organs contain almost similar DNA, they perform different functions. Starting as the single-cell they divide over time and ancestor cells give rise to descendant cells forming a lineage tree.

The process of cell transformation from one type to another is called cellular differentiation. Understanding this process is crucial to know what goes on in normal human development process and also what goes wrong in pathologies such as cancer. LinTlMat is the research developed by Dr. Hamim Zafar, to understand this challenging process.

The method and its application on the whole-organism lineage reconstruction have been reported in an article published in the journal Nature Communications. The research team consists of Dr. Hamim Zafar, joint faculty in the CSE and BSBE departments of IIT, Kanpur, Chieh Lin (co-first author in the study), and Professor Ziv Bar-Joseph from Carnegie Mellon University.

“Our methods will have a lot of applications in understanding normal as well as pathological development in different diseases. LinTlMaT will be a powerful method for the biologists who are studying development in model organisms or cancer tissues,” said Dr. Zafar.

“Go have sex and enjoy, you prostitute”: BHIM Army chief in soup for abusive and derogatory tweets on women

The Chairperson of National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, on Thursday, took suo motu cognisance of vile and abusive comments made by  of BHIM Army chief Chandrasekhar Azad and said that she would ‘take care of the man disgracing the name of a great hero’ after his old tweets that was bad in taste went viral on social media.

Netizens also started demanding action from Twitter to bar him from the micro-blogging site after the tweets that he made in 2018 resurfaced. It is to be noted that Chandrasekhar Azad is a verified blue tick handle.

The Bhim Army chief in his tweets had used extremely unpleasant and derogatory language against women who are seen supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He called these women as “prostitutes” and people “who sell their bodies to BJP leaders”.

On March 23, 2018, responding to a twitter handle, the Bhim Army chief wrote “go have sex and enjoy, you prostitute”.

On March 25, 2018, the BHIM Army chief tweeted against journalist Jagriti Shukla using crass language and cheap Hindi slangs and called her a “prostitute” who sells her body and does “dallal” (pimp) to BJP.

In another tweet, he called Zee News anchor Anjana Om Kashyam a prostitute and dallal.

The BHIM Army chief can also be seen derogating Union Minister Smriti Irani, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in an extremely abusive tweet.

He had even called BJP supporters as those born to dogs.

It is to be noted that Twitter had earlier censored American President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”. However, Twitter is yet to take action on the BHIM Army Chief’s account.

Author and prominent Twitter personality Shefali Vaidya questioned Twitter’s inaction and expressed concerns of safety for woman on Twitter.

The NCW Chairperson has written to the UP DGP requesting for a strict action against the BHIM Army chief who has denied writing these tweets as he claims that he was in jail during that time.

The UP police are now in touch with cybercrime department.

Crucial meeting that was to happen between India and Pakistan on Thursday, to deliberate on the locust attacks and ways to tackle the menace was skipped by Pakistan, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

It was reported that according to diplomatic sources, Islamabad had not given any formal response to the request to hold discussions on the locust attack.

Officials from both India and Pakistan were to hold a technical level meeting on June 18 to discuss about the recent locust attacks that led to widespread damage to crops in both the countries.

The Foreign Office of Pakistan had earlier said on June 5 that both the countries were cooperating to tackle the issue under a forum administered by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Both Pakistan and India are members of the FAO’s Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in South-West Asia (SWAC).

The Dawn had reported quoting thePakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui that a ministerial meeting was held in March and a Technical and Operational Coordination Team was formed to exchange information and for coordinating at the border areas to combat the locust attack. She had mentioned that the country had been participating in SWAC meetings on a weekly basis and that the cooperation was fruitful. Farooqui had assured that Pakistan remains committed to cooperating with SWAC member states including India.

Locust swam have plagued the fields eating away crops in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and in major areas of Pakistan as well.

Uighur Muslim Imams are most vulnerable to persecution in Mainland China, Uyghur Hjelp says

Norway based Uighur advocacy and aid organization Uyghur Hjelp has said that Uighur Muslim Imams in China’s Xinjiang province have become the most vulnerable to persecution due to Beijing’s crackdown on Uighur Muslims.

Abduweli Ayup, the founder of Uyghur Hjelp has reportedly said that the targeting of Imams is not a surprising as they have the potential to organize and mobilize Uighurs Muslims in large numbers.

It is said that Chinese authorities have detained more than 518 Uighur Muslim figures and Imams since 2016 and many of those who were trained and employed by Beijing have now been sentenced to long imprisonment while some of them have died in internment camps.

Abdurkerim Memet, one of the detained Imams was sent to 10 years in prison 2017. The 61 year old Imam was employed by Beijing to lead the prayers at a mosque in Yengisar in Kashgar, located in southern part of Xinjiang. Her daughter who lives in Saudi Arabia didn’t know of this until she got to know through a local contact in Xinjiang.

And it is not just those living within Xinjiang are targeted. Some of the family members living outside the province allege that they have been tricked into coming to Xinjiang based on false promises. Meryemgul Abdulla, a Uighur woman based out of Turkey had told Voice of America that her husband Abduhalik Abdulhak, a religious scholar was enticed by the Chinese saying that they would allow him to construct a museum but was later arrested upon returning to China.

According to UN estimates, more than a million Muslims could be in internment camps. Some observers have alleged that Chinese authorities use religious extremism charges that give a free hand to detain Uighurs. It is said that the Chinese Communist Party is trying to suppress the Uighur identity and culture.

New Zealand hit by earthquake of high magnitude

On Thursday, New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands were hit by an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale. A warning of hazardous tsunami waves within 300km (186 miles) of the epicentre was issued within minutes. However, the alert was later downgraded with no tsunami threat for New Zealand or Australia. The country’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) tweeted saying that the possibility of this triggering a tsunami was unlikely.

This earthquake, which has been dubbed the June 18 quake, has been measured to have an impact of up to a depth of 10 kilometres. This was preceded by a similar quake of 5.1 magnitude off the Bay of Plenty about 5.30 am on Tuesday.

Earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.5 and 7.5, like the one that occurred south of New Zealand, generally do not produce destructive tsunamis, the United States Geological Survey states, but “small sea-level changes might be observed in the vicinity of the epicentre.” Due to this, people have been instructed to stay out of the water, fearing strong currents.

A lot of people living along the coast have come out in condemnation of the delay in response with respect to the Tsunami warning, saying that by the time the NEMA had issued the warning to not venture into the sea, it would have been too late, had there been a tsunami.
