EVR’s views about Congress and Mahatma Gandhi: Some history lessons for the Congress

The Congress party on Thursday (September 17) heaped praises on E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (known as Periyar by his followers) on the occasion of his birthday calling him a ‘beacon of rationalism and self-respect’.

Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram too tweeted a picture of E.V. Ramasamy that said ‘Celebrate the beard that stood for social justice’ with the hashtag #PeriyarForever, in an apparent dig at Prime Minister Modi’s beard.

This is not the first time that the Congress has expressed its new found love for E.V. Ramasamy. Earlier in July 2020, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while expressing his displeasure over the defacement of E.V.Ramasamy statue in Coimbatore, wrote that “no amount of hate can ever deface a giant.”

The Congress party in its attempt to placate the DMK and other opposition parties now finds itself adoring the very same man who opposed Congress and Mahatma Gandhi tooth and nail.

But unlike Congress, E.V. Ramasamy was not so sweet to them.

There has not been a single leader who has criticized Gandhi as rabidly and unjustly as EVR did. He had even called for the ‘annihilation of Gandhi’ and ‘annihilation of Congress’ along with the ‘annihilation of Brahmins’.

EVR in 1927 had said “My friend Ramanathan and I told the Mahatma (when we met him) that three tasks had to be completed for India attaining independence and self-respect. The first would be the destruction of the Congress party, the second the destruction of Hindu religion and the third the destruction of the domination of Brahmins. The third would automatically happen when the first two tasks were completed. Gandhi’s response was not to our satisfaction.”

EVR was someone who opposed the very idea of India and was dead against Mahatma Gandhi. He had called for a Dravidistan along the lines of Pakistan and also tried to collude with Muhammad Ali Jinnah for the same. However, Jinnah saw him as a threat to his own plans and showed EVR the finger.

In 1957, he had called for the burning of pictures of Mahatma Gandhi. He said

We were cheated by Gandhi. Our land (the Tamil land) has been enslaved to the Northerners and Brahmins by Gandhi. It is because of Gandhi that people lost all great qualities they had…(and) it is now impossible to live without being immoral, dishonest, deceitful and traitorous

This is what he had to say about Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. In a speech made in December 1973, he said

These are our five principles—annihilation of God, annihilation of religion, annihilation of Gandhi, annihilation of Congress and annihilation of Brahmins…Before we could annihilate Gandhi, the Brahmins did the task for us”

Though he expressed his condolences when Mahatma Gandhi died, he resorted to calling Gandhi names again.

In a rally held on 4-11-1973, Periyar said

Watch out for the people who are saying ‘Jai congress’&’Jai Gandhi’ they are implicitly accepting they are bastard sons of paarpans (brahmins). They are accepting that they are lowborn.

Today, the Congress and its leaders find themselves in a position praising the same man who had been unkind to them, just to cater to the sentiments of their alliance partners.

Kerala Minister KT Jaleel being grilled by NIA

Minister of Higher Education KT Jaleel who arrived in Kochi at 6 AM today is being interrogated by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the high profile Kerala Gold Smuggling Case.

This interrogation by the NIA comes following the questioning by Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED had questioned the Minister last week about the consignments of Quran that he had received from the UAE consulate.

It is said that before the NIA summoned the minister, the Director of the Enforcement Directorate reached Kochi yesterday and spoke to the NIA officials.

Minister KT Jaleel had accepted that he had interacted with Swapna Suresh, the kingpin of the smuggling scam and the prime accused in the case, on May 27 about donating food kits people affected by locdkdown. He said that he had interacted with Swapna in ‘official capacity’.

He also said that the 32 packets of Quran that he received from the UAE Consulate was for distribution during Ramazan and added that it remains intact for scrutiny by law enforcement agencies.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya rips apart Kerala’s communist government in Parliament

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Bengaluru South Tejasvi Surya during the Lok Sabha zero-hour yesterday raised the matter of violent suppression of dissent in the CPM-ruled Kerala.

The young MP called the attention of the House the scams of the communist regime in Kerala and the suppression of democratic voices.

“CM Pinarayi Vijayan, true Communist that he is, is following Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot and Castro in violently suppressing dissent,” said Surya.

The BJP MP  accused the communist government of Kerala of suppressing democratic protests by the brutal actions of Kerala Police on the Yuva Morcha Karyakartas. The protestors had taken a rally against the scams of Kerala Government.

Tejasvi Surya highlighted various corruption scams including the high profile Kerala Gold Smuggling Case saying that Communist government Kerala used every public tragedy as an opportunity of personal enrichment.

“From smuggling to drug cartels, housing scam to e-mobility, brewery scam to fraudulent public service commission examinations, to custodial death by police the Kerala communist government has surpassed crimes of every communist regime from Colombia to Venezuela, Cuba to North Korea in just 4 years of governance.

The BJP workers were demanding the resignation of CPM Minister KT Jaleel in Kerala.

The police and left-wing comrades resorted to allegedly brutal tactics when it attacked the karyakartas of ABVP, BJP Mahila Morcha, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

Drawing the attention of the house to the police brutality in Kerala, the BJP MP said “The great land of Lord Ayyappa, Adi Shankara and Sri Narayana Guru cannot be let to suffer at the hands of communist despots.”

Kerala is the last bastion of left parties and is known for resorting to political violence by its Communist party members who use intimidation to silence their ideological opponents. To prove this, the J Shamsudeen committee report released in September 2019 gave ample evidence of the Left’s reign of terror in Kerala colleges.

“The students narrated how the SFI activists physically assaulted and verbally abused them for not being a part of the outfit’s activities. They also complained about exam irregularities by SFI workers with the tacit support of college authorities,” Shamsudeen said.

One of the startling reports was the existence of “torture chambers” run by SFI members who would torment students who fail to toe the party line.

The report also shed light on Left-affiliated teachers who turn a blind eye to the illegal activities of SFI leaders.

Remembering ‘Periyar’ and his contribution to Tamil and Tamil society

E.V. Ramasamy Naicker, popularly hailed as ‘Periyar’ by his followers, is known for founding the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam. He is considered as the father of Dravidian movement and a harbinger of social justice who advocated atheism and rationalism. However, his atheism and rationalism was primarily directed towards Hinduism only and not towards other religions. The rationality in that kind of atheism still puzzles many thinking individuals.

The first person to start politics of hatred and violence even before Mohammad Ali Jinnah was Periyar. While Jinnah divided Indians on the basis of religion, Periyar incited hatred by exploiting linguistic differences and the English invented racial differences of Aryan-Dravidian. He proposed a separate Dravidistan along the lines of Pakistan and tried to collude with Jinnah too on the same. However, Jinnah saw him as a threat to his own plans and showed EVR the finger.

Over the years, a saintly image has been constructed around EV Ramasamy Naicker portraying him as the crusader of Tamils to the extent that the Tamil land is called as the ‘land of Periyar’ by his followers. Many in Tamil Nadu, celebrate him as the leader of Tamils and protector of Tamil rights. But his entire life has been contradictory to these claims. At the very outset, he himself was not a Tamilian but a Kannadiga. If one reads the speeches and editorials of Periyar in his mouthpieces Viduthalai and Kudiarasu, it would be evident as to what his views on Tamil and Tamilians were. Following are some historical records about Periyar that many do not know or consciously hide from the mainstream.

#1: Periyar considered Tamil to be a barbarian language.

In an editorial article of Viduthalai dated October 11, 1967, Periyar called Tamil as a “kaatumiraandi mozhi”, meaning barbarian language. He mentions Tamil as a barbarian language not once but several times during the course of his lifetime. He wanted Tamil to be discarded at home and advocated the use of English as the medium of communication. He went to the extent of saying that ‘Tamil is a language that is not even useful for begging’.

#2: Periyar ridiculed Silappadikaram.

Silappadikaram, the great Tamil epic written by Ilango Adigal and belonging to the ancient Sangam literature, was called by Periyar as an Aryan propaganda tool. In a speech made on March 30, 1951, he shuns Silappadikaram as a text filled with Aryan concepts. One of the finest and richest literature ever produced by mankind, he considered it to be a treasure of superstitions and slavery of women.

#3: Periyar brutally criticized Kamba Ramayanam.

Kamba Ramayanam, the Tamil version of Ramayana that is revered in Tamil Nadu was denounced by Periyar as a ‘storehouse of falsehood’. He opined that literature like Kamba Ramayanam betrayed the Tamil race. He said that the popularity of literature like Kamba Ramayanam and Silappadikaram showed that Tamil people had no intelligence and self-respect.

#4: Periyar called Tamil society as backward and irrational.

During October and November 1967, Periyar wrote several articles describing that Tamils were backward and irrational. He said that Tamils invented only backward elements like grinding stone, cotton wicks, oil lamps, bullock cart, palm leaf, mantras, yogic power etc which had no practical utility. He even mentioned that Tamils had no concept of time and that it was adopted from the English society. To him, Tamils were a bunch of people, who had no racial feeling, no self-respect, no nationalism and no humaneness.

#5: Periyar was a harsh critic of Tamil scholars.

In the edition of Viduthalai dating March 16, 1967, he observed that Tamil scholars and pundits deserved to be imprisoned for life and hanged as they did not create anything that led to society’s progress. He described the World Tamil Conference as a “census to enumerate fools”.

#6: Periyar referred to the ancient Saivite and Vaishnavite Tamil literature as rubbish.

Tamil Saivite literature like Tevaram, Tiruvasagam and Tirumandiram which are part of the Thirumurai, a collection of songs in praise of Hindu God Shiva was called as rubbish by Periyar. Divyaprabandham, which is considered as the Tamil Veda and Periyapuranam written by the renowned saint Sekkizhar that elaborated the lives of 63 Nayanmars were called by Periyar as instruments that harmed the Tamil society.

#7: Periyar equated Thirukkural to excreta.

While Thirukkural has been a revered work across the world, Periyar called it “feces placed in a golden plate”. Though he praised Thirukkural in the beginning, he started condemning it in his later years. The issue of Viduthalai dated June 1, 1950, had a writing of Periyar that condemned Thirukkural for carrying ideas opposed to ‘rationalism’. When a few people asked him if Thirukkural too would be gone, what literature the Tamils would be left with, he responded saying:

I am saying remove the excreta emanating bad smell from the room… and you are asking me if we remove this excreta what should we replace in its place?

#8: Periyar maligned freedom fighter and Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi.

In the journal Ticutar, he besmirched Bharathiyar for describing Mother Tamil as a sister of Sanskrit in his poems. He indirectly referred to Bharathiyar as a rat living in agraharam. He said that:

They say Bharati is an immortal poet. Even if a rat dies in an agraharam, they would declare it to be immortal. Why should this be so? Supposedly because he sang fulsome praises of Tamil and Tamil Nadu. What else could he sing? His own mother tongue, Sanskrit, has been dead for years. What other language did he know? He cannot sing in Sanskrit.

All these comments and views of Periyar on Tamil and Tamil society makes one really wonder whether Periyar was a champion of Tamils or was he an anti-Tamil bigot and a rabble rouser? Though his comments may have had certain historical and sociological context, the genesis of venomous elements in today’s Tamil society can be traced to this demagogue called E.V. Ramasamy Naicker who in the name of rationalism perpetrated nothing but hatred.

PM Modi: The prayers of people rewarded in the form of a Karma Yogi

A few months back, I happened to listen to an audio recording of a conversation between one doctor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To a question on what he has been upto these days, the Prime Minister responds “Sadhana”. “What kind of Sadhana?” the doctor asks. “Sadhana to control my sleep”.

The doctor remarks “You’re already known for sleeping very little. How much more you want to reduce your sleep?”, to which the Prime Minister says “I don’t want to sleep at all.” For those of you who think it is an unachievable feat, it is possible to gain control over sleep through Sadhana. Many seekers and sages achieve Sadhana for various purposes.

Taken aback by Prime Minister Modi’s response, the doctor asks “But for what?”. Modi says “This is such a great nation! But we’re still in poverty. We’ve been looted and taken for granted for a long time. I need to fix it. 20 hours is not enough. I need all 24 hours.” The conversation then goes on to PM Modi’s days in the Himalayas, his vision for the country and a lot of other things.

The doctor further asks “There are so many people out there to kill you. Aren’t you afraid?” and this is what Modi replies “The purpose of my life is to serve this nation. Until I fulfil this purpose, nobody can kill me and once my purpose has been fulfilled, nobody can save me. I am not afraid of death. I am here to fulfil my life’s calling.”

For decades, this country has been looted and kept as a third world country. Corruption and dynasty politics thrived in the political and administrative system that made the rich get richer and poor get poorer. But then there emerged a leader from the bottom of the strata who sought to challenge this system. The journey wasn’t easy though.

Over the years, a whole fraternity has ganged up on him, running negative campaigns, portraying him as a religious bigot and continuously ostracising him. But why would someone hate this man so much? Is it because he is leaving no scope for corruption? Is it because he is putting an end to the hegemony of these people? Or is it because he just doesn’t have the surname or belong to the influential family?

The truth is that these people cannot stand the sight of a person coming from a lower socio-economic strata holding power. They don’t like to see him succeed earning the love of the aam aadmi.

India has never had a leader who represented the 95% of the Indian populace, a common man hailing from a humble background. A chailwallah. Probably for the first time we have a leader who understands the aam aadmi. He understands that for change to happen in this country one needs to go beyond schemes and laws, and think out of the box.

This out-of-the-box thinking is the reason behind the pace at which things are changing for the better for the common man. For all things said about him, nobody can disagree that the way he has been dealing with different exigencies is exceptional. The man offers leadership lessons with his every move and one of the things about being a leader is that you carry your team along with you irrespective of differences and internal scuffles.

This man has been mocked at and knocked down several times before he became what he is today. So no matter how much one tries to bring him down, he will continue to rise up further and further.

It takes enormous grit, guts, and strength to take all this in and emerge victorious. It is because of the penance of great sages and the blessings of all good souls of this land that we have someone like Narendra Modi as our Prime Minister. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we as a nation are not just taking strides but giant leaps, with the world looking at India as the Vishwa Guru.

On his birthday, I extend my heartfelt wishes and pray to God for his good health!

Navigating extreme orthodoxy and liberal fundamentalism

I am one of the petitioners in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed at the Delhi High Court seeking recognition of the right of SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) community members to marry under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. In fact, I was approached to be a co petitioner on the above from a progressive Hindu perspective as the space of gender and sexual rights has been taken over by the left and even those who come under the queer umbrella are often against anything Hindu.

I chose to be a part of it because I was also felt that the gamut of what constitutes the complexity and umbrella of Hinduism could be explored in a positive way and interface the Hindu cultural and legal space. The very valid issues of people not coming from the normative background could open the path of how a more integrated better relationship fabric could be created – instead of denial, prejudice fear and projection.

But as expected, a huge negative response has come from both Hindu traditional orthodoxy and sections of the queer left. Both have tried to present the government position as negative to the petition. Actually the government position is to see what the legal ramifications are along with the ground realities.
The orthodoxy has said that Hindu tradition is based on scriptures (selective) and these allow no scholastic or other debate. The reality is that several thousands of years as well as different geographies result in very diverse positions. Even in the Rig Veda there are massive differences. These have been for the most part been censored by some of these orthodoxies. Further texts that cite criminalization of this third space are cited but not those that celebrate these spaces which in fact were huge.

This is sadly a mirroring of certain traits found in monotheism orthodoxy rather than the complex poly cosmology as well as the nyaya sutras – the debates – that positions may be very diverse.
Further every society transforms and evolves. Hence we have to examine modern realities as well and find how we can work with them while staying within the legal and social fabric.

If not, how will people who identify as Hindus but do not fit into the framework of the orthodoxy have a sense of belonging when they are treated as outcasts? How will this make them want to integrate? Therefore, it is important to take responsible positions so that the young and vulnerable do not get swayed by the hollow rhetoric of the Hindu-hating left.

The culture of Hinduphobia and India bashing are not just detrimental to rights of SOGIESC community members, as it demeans not just the gender/sexual identity, but the very native identity of the person. Therefore, modes of unions need to be understood. A space not just for dialogue but the rightful space to exist and claim equal rights as available to every heterosexual Hindu is necessary.
The left constantly generalizes me. Some call me queer while some even pronounce me dead. Why should someone who identifies with one’s own civilizational history be subsumed under such a term?

The Hindu orthodoxy has said that the petition should be made under the Special Marriage Act of 1956 for registration of same sex marriages. It is to be noted that people have already filed a petition under the SMA and it is still in process. And why should it not be filed under the Hindu Marriage Act if the petitioners are Hindus? Why are other forms of unions and practices that were earlier allowed within the Hindu fold are now considered threatening and any kind of genuine open space labeled western? Hopefully the orthodoxies can move beyond their fear thresholds and realize that this is what fuels the anti-India hate peddled by the left liberal cabals.

What gives me hope is that there are many Hindus who have no issues with the petition in question.
