Serial offender DMK functionary booked for fraud

An office bearer belonging to the DMK has been booked for cheating and extorting who had collected money from public claiming that he was going to make a film.

Kannan is a ward secretary of the DMK belonging to the 114th ward of Tiruvallikkeni-Chepauk constituency.

He had taken ₹2 lakhs from a man named Anbalagan from Chepauk saying that he was going to make a film. He had collected upto ₹6.5 lakhs from different people in the area.

However, as there was no progress about the film being made, people had started asking for their money back. Apart from not giving satisfactory response to those he owed the money, the DMK office bearer even went on to threaten them, sources said.

Following this, four people who had given money to the DMK office bearer had lodged a complaint with the Tiruvallikeni police station.

It is to be noted that the DMK office bearer has a history of indulging in criminal activities and duping people. He and his son were once arrested and kept in jail for cheating a youth and extorting money from him.

In 2017, Kannan’s son Kavithiran had befriended Moorthy, a native of Kallakurichi who had come to study at a college in Chennai. One report stated that the father-son duo had advertised in Moorthy’s college about their movie titled Nammakadha (produced by Kannan featuring his son Kavithiran) stating that anyone who wishes to act in this film could do so by investing in the movie and Moorthy had given ₹1 lakh to Kavithiran for this purpose in 2019.

Another local media report stated that Moorthy had given more than ₹1 lakh to Kavithiran who had supposedly asked Moorthy for money saying that he needed it for his father’s medical expenses.

When Moorthy had asked for his money back he was shown the finger. Depressed, Moorthy had gone back to his native Kallakurichi and tried to make his ends meet by working as a daily wage labourer. He once again tried to get his money back by going to Kavithiran’s house when both Kavithiran and his father Kannan had thrashed him. Following this, Moorthy had registered a police complaint and the father-son duo was arrested in kept in jail.

Not only this, when the DMK was in power in 2006, Kannan had attacked a woman who had participated in a protest against the state government demanding fulfilment of basic necessities. He was convicted of attempt to murder and was sentenced to three years prison.

The traders, commission agents and other middlemen are also resorting to hoarding for selling them at higher prices. Usually, 100 truckloads come to Koyambedu market but it has reduced to 40.

On the other hand, the demand for onions has shot up with the arrival of the festive season thereby pushing the prices high.  In the wholesale market, it was sold at ₹ 100, ₹85 and ₹60 per kg, respectively, yesterday.

Retailers, who bought at those prices, sold it up to ₹120 per kilo. Onions are being from Egypt to contain the price. Around 28 tonnes is said to have arrived till now.

In light of this, Minister for Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Sellur K. Raju held a meeting with department officials to contain the price and a decision was taken to sell onions at ₹45 per kg in farm green shops from today.

Farm Fresh Outlets run in many places across the state would be selling onions at  ₹45 per kg.

Speaking to the press Minister Sellur K. Raju said “During the rainy season, onion prices usually go up. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, where onion yields are high, heavy rains have reduced onion supply and pushed up prices. Therefore, onions will be sold at ₹45 per kg from today in farm green shops in all parts of the Corporation, including Chennai; The shops in other areas will be selling from tomorrow. On the basis of demand and supply, the price of onion will be monitored continuously and the government is taking steps to provide quality onions on behalf of the co-operative sector without any harm to the people.”

Australia is all set to join India, the United States, and Japan and next once Navy exercises that are to be taking place in the Indian ocean. This is a move that is expected to strengthen the military relationship between these democracies as the camaraderie between these Nations continue to weaken with China.

Australia is officially a part of the Quad, or the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which is an allegiance between the aforementioned countries, dealing with regular summits and information exchanges as well as military-related exercises as the one currently taking place. This is a potential balance to the increasing influence of the Chinese forces in the Asia Pacific region, despite not being a formal alliance like NATO.

It is significant to note that Australia will be participating in these exercises after 2007, and it is the first time since then that all the four members of the Quad will officially be present for an exercise as such. These manoeuvres have been conducted ever since 1992, and it has greatly added on over the course of time as a “variety of shared threats to Maritime security in Indo-Asia Pacific region” continues to rise.

Malabar began as a bilateral exercise between India and the US. Japan became a permanent Malabar member in 2015. Previous exercises have taken place in the Indian Ocean as well as off the coast of Japan a year ago, and around the US Pacific territory of Guam and in the Philippine Sea in 2018. “I am nobody’s adopted son”: DMK sympathizer tries to politicize TN student’s NEET success, student clears the air

Jeevith Kumar, and student of Silvarpatti Government Higher Secondary School in Theni district who studied in Tamil medium had scored 664 out of 720 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2020.

His father K. Narayanamoorthi is a goat herder while his mother N. Parameswari is a MGNREGA worker.

Jeevith upon completing his 12th std in 2018-19 academic year started preparing for NEET by enrolling himself at a coaching institute in Namakkal after he scored 190 marks in the previous year’s exam.

His hardwork paid off as he stood at rank 1823 at the national level, the first time a government school student from Tamil Nadu has made it to the top.

However, as soon as news of his feat made headlines, a video went viral in which a lady named Sabarimaala had claimed that Jeevith was her student and that she had resigned from her government school teacher job just to fulfill the promise she made to Anitha (the girl from Ariyalur who committed suicide for failing in NEET).

https://twitter.com/Kokkipolitics/status/1317390724590129152

Later, she had posted another video in her social media stating that Jeevith was her adopted son and Jeevith’s success in the exam was her ‘own personal victory’. Sabarimaala had claimed in her video that ‘BJP groups’ had threatened Jeevith Kumar by going to his home and went on a rant targeting the AIADMK and the BJP.

Sensing that his success in the exam was being politicized unnecessarily, Jeevith released a video in which he clarified that his success cannot be attributed to just one person but to everyone who had who had helped him in his preparation.

https://www.facebook.com/dilipkannan.veeran/videos/2792744477716671/

In the video, he started by thanking the teachers and the head masters of the government schools he studied in. “All the teachers motivated me, helped me and kept supporting throughout my preparation.” Jeevith said. He especially thanked headmaster Mohan and Arul Murugan, part-time teacher at the Siluvaarpatti Higher Secondary School for their continued guidance.

“After completing 12th standard I started preparing for NEET. I had completed 12th in the old syllabus. Since it wasn’t in NEET syllabus I was not able to score marks that year and couldn’t get a seat in government college. But now, it has changed. Now Tamil Nadu syllabus is in line with NEET syllabus. Government school students can easily clear the exam if they thoroughly study this syllabus.” Jeevith said.

He mentioned that he had planned to join a coaching centre for NEET and that his parents were planning to put in their savings for it. He said that his headmaster, teachers and Arulmurugan had extended to offer help financially and went on to thank them for it.

He mentioned that he met Sabarimaalaa through his teacher Arulmurugan. She had come to his school for an awareness programme on sexual harassment against women. Jeevith said that Sabarimaalaa had one day come to his school and shot a video at the entrance asking him if he would clear NEET and that she would support him. That video was shared by Sabarimaalaa on her Facebook which was seen by a man named Godwin who had offered to help through Sabarimaalaa. Jeevith in his video thanks both Sabarimaalaa and Godwin for their help.

“I can’t attribute my success to just one person. All people – people who I have met, people who I have not even seen, have all extended their help for me and I am thankful for them.” Jeevith said.

“I just saw the video shared by Sabarimaalaa madam in which she says that few party people came and threatened me. I did not even know about this video and came to know about it only through social media. Nothing of that sort happened. Nobody threatened me. Many people came and appreciated me. I felt good and happy.” Jeevith said.

“Madam [Sabarimaalaa] had repeatedly kept claiming in her video that I was her adopted son. One thing needs to understood here. I am first son to my parents. All teachers who had taught me till 12th have stood by me. My parents have not given me to anybody for adoption. I am a son to my parents. All teachers were my ‘Arivu Thaai’ (knowledge mothers). I request Sabarimaalaa madam to not spread any kind of misleading information about me.” Jeevith stated in his video.

Following this video, netizens lashed out Sabarimaalaa for milking a poor boy’s achievements to her own personal and political agenda. It was also found that Sabarimaalaa is in fact a person who is a DMK sympathizer.

Pakistan extends invitation to Indian Sikhs to commemorate Gurupurab

Pakistani has extended an invitation to Indian Sikhs to attend the 551st birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.  The three-day celebrations of this festival, known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab, is set to begin on November 27. The invitations are to attend the festivities at the Nankana Sahib. The Abandoned Waqf Property Board and the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) have also sent regular invitations and itineraries to various Sikh societies, including the Shiromani Committee of India, for attending the festivities.

Indian pilgrims are to be granted a 5-day visa to attend these festivities, and that a mandatory COVID-19 negative test result is to be produced in order to do so. The visa will effectively expire on 2nd December.

It is to be noted that these festivities are an annual occurrence, and hundreds of Sikh pilgrims from different parts of the world gather at the Gurdwara Janamasthan Nankana Sahib, which is considered to be the birthplace of Guru Nanak, to celebrate his birth anniversary. Since the coronavirus pandemic has taken over the world, there were apprehensions to attend the festivities as usual. Unlike the usual norm, this year, they will only be permitted to attend the events taking place at the Nankana Sahib, and are expected to leave Lahore as soon as the visa expires. They will not be allowed to go to other gurdwaras like the Kartarpur Sahib.

India has said a decision to re-open the Kartarpur corridor would be taken in accordance with the protocols relating COVID-19 and easing of restrictions. The corridor links Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur in India to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan – the final resting place of Guru Nanak.

Tonnes of smuggled turmeric from India to Srilanka recovered

About 13 tonnes of turmeric which was to be smuggled from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka has been seized. After the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, the government has been taking various measures to increase the production of agricultural products.

The Government of Sri Lanka has set a target of becoming self-sufficient in food production, including turmeric, by 2021. For this, 11 items including turmeric, cloves, cardamom, poppy seeds, pepper, mustard and cumin have been banned from being imported from abroad.

Thus, it is said that there is currently a shortage of banned items in Sri Lanka. After the coronavirus pandemic, turmeric is being used by the Sri Lankan people as a disinfectant, so it is said that a kilo of turmeric retails for Rs. 3,700 and wholesale for Rs. 2,000. It is said that some Tamil Nadu traders who came to know about this have been smuggling large quantities of turmeric to Sri Lanka by boat since last February and converting it into gold instead of cash.

Most of the smuggled turmeric is said to be transported from Dhanushkodi in Ramanathapuram district to the fourth earthen plateau in Sri Lanka via the Gulf of Mannar. The investigation also revealed that the smugglers could easily smuggle the turmeric. Due to the lack of depth in the sea, turmeric smuggling by boat can only be prevented by helicopter or hovercraft that can land and sea.

Complaint lodged with NHRC against Tirupati SP for ‘intentional inaction’ and favouring Christian pastor accused of rape

A complaint has been filed with the National Human Rights Commission against the Tirupati Urban District Superintendent of Police Mr. Avula Ramesh Reddy IPS by the Legal Rights Protection Forum, for his ‘intentional inaction’ and favouring the accused, Mallem Devasahayam, a Christian pastor who has been accused of rape by a fellow employee.

Mallem Devasahayam is the President of “Bible Research Ministries”, a Christian missionary organization. He is also the owner of Rainbow Cleaning Products, a private company located in Renigunta, Andhra Pradesh. The survivor, a 20 year old girl was working as a sales girl in this company.

According to reports, on October 3, Mallem Devasahayam had picked up girl from the Tirupati-Renigunta road at around 7 PM and reached Thukivakam village where the pastor brutally assaulted and raped her.

The incident had come to light after the human rights Chittoor District wing met the 20-year-old victim while undergoing treatment at the Tirupati maternity hospital.

In the complaint copy accessed by The Commune, the LRPF stated that as per the video statement given by the survivor’s mother, the police had refused to accept the complaint filed by the survivor. Besides this, the Sub-Inspector of Gajula Mandyam Police Station had allegedly asked the rape survivor to “leave the city” and that “these incidents are very common nowadays in Tirupati”.

After two failed attempts at filing a complaint at the Tirupati Disha Police Station on October 8 and the Tirupati East Police Station on October 9, the survivor had registered an online complaint through the ‘Spandana’ e-portal.

While the incident happened on October 3, the complaint was registered after 9 days on October 12.

However, the SP justified saying that the woman had reported the incident to the police only on the morning of October 12 during the Spandana programme (a weekly grievance redressal programme), and that a complaint was registered immediately.

On the other hand, the SP on October 16 had tweeted that the rape accused was neither a pastor nor a missionary as alleged.

However, netizens were quick to point out that the accused was in fact a Christian pastor and missionary. The LRPF also point out the same in the complaint saying that the accused runs the “Bible Research Ministries” based out of Tirupati town.

https://twitter.com/AndKherde/status/1317143869033762818

Even after the registration of FIR, the police did not arrest the rape accused pastor immediately and intentionally delayed the arrest, LRPF alleged in its complaint.

LRPF also noted in the complaint that the Mr. Avula Ramesh Reddy was close to the current political establishment in the state and was nurturing political ambitions of contesting MLA or MP elections in the future under the ruling YSRCP banner.

“Hence, he is cultivating the powerful Christian Missionary lobby in Tirupati for his political aspirations.”, LRPF said in its complaint alleging that the SP is also close to the rape accused pastor who is a wealthy and powerful man.

The LRPF noted in the complaint to the NHRC that such deliberate inaction by the police due to closeness of the accused to the Tirupati SP has led to the entire evidence of rape disappear thereby indirectly helping the accused rapist pastor.

“In order to cover up his misdeeds, and to gain over and pacify the victim the SP, Tirupati told in a press conference that he gave victim ₹25,000/- from his salary.”, the complaint stated adding that this in itself was proof of criminal negligence by the SP and him not taking prompt action on rape complaint and his support to the accused rapist pastor.

“In these circumstances, it is not possible for the police to conduct impartial enquiry and ensure conviction of the powerful accused. The poor victim girl is also under tremendous pressure from police and other Pastors to withdraw her complaint.”, the complaint noted.

The complaint mentioned that despite all the judgements given by the Supreme Court of India and several guidelines of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Tirupati Urban Police headed by Mr. Avula Ramesh Reddy, Superintendent of Police has willfully remained as mute spectators in order to favor the accused person.

The LRPF has asked the NHRC to order a thorough enquiry and take suitable legal and disciplinary action against the SP and other police officials for their failure to record the FIR in time in relation to the case.
