Flash floods kill 70 in Afghanistan

A recent flash flood that happened as a result of sudden downpour killed more than 70 in Afghanistan on Wednesday. It also ended up destroying hundreds of homes just north of Afghanistan’s capital.

Provinces like Maidan, Wardak and Nangahar also experienced a heavy loss of lives due to this disaster, as well as through eight other northern provinces of the country.

The Parwan province experienced a heavy downpour late on Tuesday night, which stretched out into the early hours of Wednesday. This caused a sudden flash flood, washing away men, women and children and destroying 300 homes, according to Ministry of Disaster Management spokesman Ahmad Tamim Azimi. Rescuers searched through mud throughout the day for bodies, with the confirmed death toll at 72, and at least 90 injured, Azimi added. He went on to say that climate change was the reason these floods have caused more damage than is usually observed due to a heavy downpour. The government’s spokesperson said on Twitter that appropriate measures were being taken to combat the losses caused by these flash floods. The disaster comes as the war-torn nation already faces a sinking economy due to the coronavirus pandemic and as violence continues despite the United States attempting to usher peace talks between the Afghan government and insurgent Taliban.

ICICI becomes the first bank in introducing satellite data to assess farmers’ credit worthiness

ICICI has become the first bank to introduce satellite data to assess farmers’ credit worthiness. It will conduct these assessments in combination with technologies from agri-tech and fin-tech firms, to offer advanced, remote credit assessment for extending loans to farmers. The technology will involve using advanced satellite imagery to assess farmlands in parameters such as land quality, location, irrigation and year-round crop patterns.

It will then use the collected data to perform analytics for metrics like availability of surface-level water for easy irrigation, extensive crop trends for a particular farmer’s farmlands including types of crops grown, duration between sowing and harvesting, as well as average quality and health of crop yields.

The bank is using readily available satellite images from Indian Space Research Organisation and the U.S.’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the purpose. “We will cover 25,000 villages over the next one month and scale it to 63,000 villages over the next two month,” ICICI Bank’s Executive Director Anup Bagchi said Tuesday, without offering any quantitative numbers on how the project will reduce the cost for the lender as well as the farmers.

The bank is partnering with agri-fin-tech companies specialising in harnessing space technology and weather information for commercial usage.

Islamist Youtuber who called Lord Ram a ‘wh*re’s son’ arrested

On 23rd August, an Islamic Youtuber called ‘Heer Khan’ caused outrage after her derogatory comments about Lord Ram got viral. She had posted a video on her Youtube channel titled ‘Black Day August 5’, and had abused Hindu gods and goddesses. In the video, she abused Goddess Sita and called her randi (derogatory way of calling prostitutes) and referred to Ayodhya as a who*ehouse.

In a video full of derogatory words and expletives against Hindu Gods, Khan also called Lord Ram a son of randi in the video. She claimed in her video that if anyone says anything against Islam, Muslims will not sit quietly. This was followed by an abusive rant against Hinduism. She had also uploaded a video saying how she had been doing this for the past one year, and no action had been taken against her.

This video went viral, and a netizen had shared this on Twitter, asking for appropriate action to be taken against her. and location of the women to file a complaint. Additional Director-General of Police Dr Sandeep Mittal noticed the video and notified UP Police to take action accordingly. Lucknow Police has taken cognizance of the video and replied to ADG Mittal that they had directed Cyber Cell to take necessary action against the said Youtuber.

Following this, Prayagraj police arrested Heer Khan, who was hiding at her relative’s place. She had apparently absconded after the FIR had been filed against her.

‘My son’s body had marks of physical torture’: Sivanadiyar Saravanan’s mother tells BJP Tamil Nadu’s Mahesh

Sivanadiyar Saravanan who was thrashed and shamed in front of his children and villagers by Sub-Inspector Anthony Michael of Thevoor police station, reportedly committed suicide on August 15 (Saturday) not able to bear the humiliation meted out to him.

Saravanan hails from Kundangal Kaadu near Puliyampatti village in Salem district. An ardent devotee of Lord Shiva he made his living by offering occult services like tying amulets, etc and also by performing rituals and poojas.

On August 14, Sub Inspector Anthony Michael had come from Thevoor Police Station to Sivanadiyar Saravanan’s home reportedly after receiving a complaint that alleged the latter of creating nuisance. He was thrashed and beaten up in front his children by SI Anthony Michael. Feeling traumatized and humiliated, Saravanan had not spoken a word for the rest of the day.

The next day he left the home only to never return. He had recorded a video on a cell phone before committing suicide accusing SI Anthony Michael saying that he alone was responsible for his death.

“For this extreme step of mine, nobody else is responsible other than Anthony Michael. Don’t think you can do all you want with the power you have. Somehow, this video will reach to the people. My soul will not leave you. You and your family cannot escape from my curse. I say this invoking the Sivan I worship. Father (Lord Shiva).. I am coming to you now. Siva Siva! Nama Sivaya!”, Sivanadiyar Saravanan in his suicide note said.

Conflicting accounts from police and neighbours

Mahesh (popularly known as Salem Mahesh), who is an office bearer with the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP and known for his yeoman service, reached the spot on August 25 to get first-hand information about the unfortunate death of the Sadhu. He said that as soon as he entered the village two CB-CID officers started following him and his team.

The police had given their version of the event to Mr. Mahesh. They had questioned the conduct of the Sivanadiyar and went on to character assassinate him.

However, Mahesh says that his interaction with the neighbours gave a totally different picture.

Mahesh had interacted with Sivanadiyar Saravanan’s mother who told him that she saw marks of physical torture. She said that she saw marks behind his neck, shoulders, back, upper arms, and buttocks. He said that she was very clear that she saw stick marks on the mortal remains of Sivanadiyar Saravanan. However, the police who had showed him photos of the body had claimed that those marks were because of decomposition.

Another interesting point that had come out of Mahesh’s ground report was that the post-mortem was done on the spot. The body was not taken to the hospital for post-mortem.

The locals in the village and Sivanadiyar’s neighbours had very high regards for Sivanadiyar Saravanan. They mentioned that he was good man and just went about doing his work without disturbing anyone. They told him that they were disheartened when they heard the news of police beating him and his subsequent death.

When Mahesh had asked if the Sadhu was naked in a compromising position, the neighbours refuted it. “How can anyone be like that? The man has a family. There are ladies in his house. He has two children and one of them is a girl. Will any father with a daughter do like that?”, they had asked Mahesh. “Whatever allegations are being levelled against him are false!”, they categorically said.

The Indu Makkal Katchi too had conducted a field investigation. Its leader Arjun Sampath had interacted with the locals and neighbours. Neighbours’ accounts on Sivanadiyar Saravanan remains the same in both the case.

India invites Vietnam to be part of Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative amid China’s expansionist adventures

In a development that will irk China, India has invited Vietnam to part of its Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).

IPOI was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during last year’s East Asia Summit in Bangkok, Thailand as an outreach programme for South-East Asian countries that have been diplomatically neglected for a long time.

The purpose of IPOI is to increase trade connectivity, maritime transport and security along with maritime ecology, maritime resources, capacity building, resource sharing, disaster risk reduction and management, science, technology and academic cooperation.

India extended the invite during the 17th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting led by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

A statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said, “India and Vietnam agreed to enhance their bilateral cooperation in line with India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and the ASEAN’s Outlook on Indo-Pacific to achieve shared security, prosperity and growth for all in the region.”

This invitation comes at a time when China is trying to compromise the territorial integrity of both nations and this invitation is important for both New Delhi and Hanoi.

Right now India is facing a hostile China in Eastern Ladakh as ties have deteriorated after Galwan face-off. At the same time Vietnam has to deal with frequent Chinese intrusion into its exclusive economic zone.

In April this year, Vietnam released footage of a large Chinese ship chasing and ramming one of its fishing boats that then sank near an oil rig in contested waters in the South China Sea which China claims belongs to it in its entirety. All countries in the South China Sea region face an aggressive China that has intruded into their economic zones.

In the recently concluded United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting to vote on the selection of a non-permanent member, India secured an unprecedented 184 votes out of the 193 countries who are members of the United Nations.

From January 1 2021, India and Vietnam will serve concurrently as non-permanent members as both sides have increased engagement in the last few years.

Modi’s Act East policy has set the ball rolling in the possible sale of BahMos missile to Vietnam now that both India and Russia have agreed to sell this deadly supersonic missile to friendly third countries.

DMK-Biriyani, a better love story than VTV: Drunk DMK cadre breaks shop in Karur for refusing to serve Biriyani after business hours

The affair between DMK and Biryani seems to be giving a tough to all eternal love classics. Earlier in August 2018, Yuvraj, a DMK youth wing secretary and another party member named Dhivakar thrashed a hotel staff after he refused to give them free biryani. The incident gained national level coverage and DMK chief MK Stalin personally came to down to the hotel to apologize for his party men’s behaviour.

Exactly two years later, the party now finds itself in yet another biryani related incident. A biryani outlet in Karur was vandalized by a DMK office bearer after he was refused biryani as there was nothing left.

Krishnan (39), hailing from Indhiranagar in Gandhigramam, south of Karur runs ‘Karur Biryani Centre’ in the same area. Business was done for the day and Krishnan was closing his shop when DMK office bearer Karthikeyan (32) belonging to the same area came in an inebriated state and asked for biryani. Krishnan told him that the shop was closed and there was no biryani left and left the spot. However, Karthikeyan went home and came back with his brother and vandalized the shop. They threw stones on the shutter, broke the tubelight, chicken grill, CCTV camera and other items kept outside. The act was caught in an adjacent CCTV camera.

Following the incident, the hashtag #திருட்டு_திமுக (Theft DMK) #ஓசிபிரியாணிதிமுக (Free Biryani DMK) started doing the rounds on social media along with funny memes.

Baloch people celebrate death anniversary of Lion of Balochistan who was killed by Musharraf

The people of Balochistan celebrated the 14th death anniversary of their leader Nawab Akbar Bugti who was killed in 2006 by Pakistan Army under the orders of then-President and dictator, Parvez Musharraf.

Nawab Akbar Bugti was the head of the Bugti tribe of Baloch people who served as the Minister of State for Interior and Governor of Balochistan Province in Pakistan and enjoyed huge political and moral support from his people.

Bugti was known to be a tolerant man who respected the rights of the minorities and once said, ” Hindu and Sikhs have been living with us for many decades and they have become an integral part of our Bugti tribe. We have and will always have religious freedom for Hindus and Sikhs. If people of any other religion or community come to us, they’ll have their freedom to practice their beliefs as well, just like we do in our Mosques, Mandir and Gurudawara.”. During the military operations in Balochistan, Nawab Bugti gave shelter to several Hindu families in 2005.

However, in 2006 he was killed and the order was given by General Musharraf who was also the architect of Kargil war with India. In 2012, a Pakistani court had issued arrest warrants against Musharraf, but he is yet to see a day behind the prison cell.

Just recently a Baloch youth named Hayat was brutally gunned down by Pakistans Paramilitary forces. Over the years, people of Balochistan have accused Islamabad of plundering and looting its resources.

Balochistan is the biggest province in Pakistan and is rich with natural resources that are being usurped by China’s mega infrastructure project the China Pakistan Economic Corridor or CPEC.

Taiwan flags Alibaba-linked e-commerce platform a security risk, says it sends data back to China

An e-commerce platform linked to Alibaba Group, the world’s biggest e-commerce giant has been declared as a potential security risk by Taiwan.

Taobao Taiwan is operated by a separate company, British Claddagh Venture Investment Ltd. However, Alibaba Group’ has an ownership stake in that company that allows it to control the consumer-to-consumer platform which is a clear violation of Taiwanese rules, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said.

The concern is that the user agreement with Taobao Taiwan gives permission to “send the member’s transaction data back to the Alibaba Group server in China,” the ministry said. “There may be an information security risk.”

British Claddagh has six months to ask permission to operate as a Chinese company or else “withdraw the investment,” the ministry said.

Taiwan has now told its operator to register as a company from the rival mainland or dispose of its ownership stake. Also, there is mounting pressure on Chinese companies in the United States and other countries who believe that the Communist Party of China is riding piggyback on these companies to access data of users.

Alibaba Group is based out of Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai and has 29% stake in British Claddagh which is below the 30% legal limit. However, it gives the Chinese company to control it by vetoing decisions.

In the last six months, China is facing a global opposition due to its unethical business practice and the biggest causality so far has been the telecom equipment manufacturing giant Huawei Technologies Ltd.

The U.S. government has declared Huawei a security risk, and the Trump White House is pressing the Chinese owner of TikTok to sell the short-video app. This pressure is being applied due to fear of transfer users’ information to China.

President Donald Trump issued a demarche barring U.S. companies from dealing with TikTok and WeChat, a popular Chinese messaging service.

‘Kafir Hindu Woman’ Santola Devi, lynched to death by her Muslim neighbours awaits justice

Santola Devi, owner of a sweet shop in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaganipur village succumbed to her injuries after she was lynched by her Muslim neighbours.

Santola was 62 years old who operated a sweet shop with her disabled son and was viciously attacked and mercilessly beaten by her neighbours in a Muslim dominated village.

The attack was carried out merely a day after Eid. According to reports published in OpIndia, for the last 4-5 years, Santola Davi was targetted by her Muslim neighbours, who called her a ‘Kaafir’ (a derogatory reference to non-Muslims) and an ‘enemy of Islam’.

Quran says that idol worshippers and non-believers of Allah should be deemed as an enemy and also sanctions violence against them. As per Verse 5:33 in the Quran,

Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.

However, the Uttar Pradesh Police and the administration have shown apathy in handling the case. The case saw some light of day three months later when a video of Santola Devi emerged in the social media in which her son was seen pleading for justice and made serious allegations of apathy against the UP police.

Details of Santola Devi’s autopsy report is startling as one reads how she was brutally attacked. The Hindu woman was hacked to death and the report states she sustained injuries in three places and died due to excessive blood loss.

Only after local MLA, Dheeraj Ojha and the Superintendent of Police took cognizance, the lynchers Khalil, Aashiq Ali, Arshad, Minaj and others were arrested. However, there was a delay on the part of the police who did initiated action only after the intervention of higher authorities.

Santola Davi’s son Pradeep had told OpIndia, “Even after the woman’s death, the Muslim neighbours had no remorse”. One of the accused Arshad’s mother even threatened him.

Pradeep wanted his mother to leave the village and move with him because there are hardly 10 Hindu families living amidst 100 Muslim families in Jaganipur village. But Santola Davi did not want to leave her ancestral home. One of the attackers, Jehanabano is still absconding from the police. She had escaped by concealing her identity by wearing a burkha.

Pradeep has accused the police of shielding the lynchers and allegedly he is being still being pressurised to withdraw the case. Another serious allegation Pradeep has made is that attempts are being made to implicate his brothers in false cases.

Indu Makkal Katchi comes out with ground report on Sivanadiyar Saravanan’s death

Indu Makkal Katchi’s ground report

Ten days after the death of the Hindu tantrik, members of the Indu Makkal Katchi led by the party leader Arjun Sampath went to the spot to get first-hand information.

They had visited the Sivanadiyar’s home               , the place (a pit) where Sivanadiyar sat and performed occult practices and poojas, and also the spot where he died. Rudraksha malas and other ritualistic materials had been kept near the pit.

One of the neighbours had told that Sivanadiyar and his family just went about with their normal lives. “I am not too close to them. But they just went about their lives. People used to come for tying amulets, driving away spirits from possessed people, and other esoteric rituals. He has two children.”, the old lady said.

Another resident says that Sivanadiyar can always be found meditating in the pit or offering occult services to those who come to him. “When he is in the pit he always wears a ‘komanam’ (loin cloth). On that day too he had been in the pit and performing rituals to a woman. That time SI Michael had come and threatened him that such kind of activities cannot be done. He was beaten then and there. 5 days later his body was recovered from the adjacent bushes.”

To the question on how he committed suicide, the resident said that he does not know for sure and that he himself is privy to the information about the death only through the video which suggests that he consumed poison.

Later, Mr. Arjun Sampath along with members of the Indu Makkal Katchi and another saint went to the Salem Collectorate to submit a petition seeking proper CB-CID investigation and proper action against the culprit and also asked for providing relief for the family. They also informed that a lot of defamatory information has been doing the rounds about the Sivanadiyar which needs to be addressed.

Speaking on the matter, Arjun Sampath said that based on the field investigation done by Indu Makkal Katchi, it has come to light that Sivanadiyar Saravanan’s house was on the way to a Christian prayer hall that was 1-1.5 kms away from the home. He says that Sivanadiyar Saravanan remained an obstacle to the conversion efforts by Christian missionaries in the area based on the information obtained from speaking to the son and others. He also said that occult practices and esoteric rituals are common in Tamil Nadu villages and that people refuted the allegations levelled on Sivanadiyar Saravanan. He asked on the basis of what complaint did SI Anthony Michael come and take action. He also posed questions on what action has been taken by the police on the video statement of the Sadhu. He expressed concerns saying that while public, media, political parties and others voiced out the police brutality meted out to Jeyaraj and Bennicks in Thoothukudi, nobody except Hindu organizations have been voicing out on this matter. He has pressed for CB-CID investigation and also an investigation if there are religious conversion forces behind the death of the Sadhu.

Indu Makkal Katchi is now filing a case seeking action.
