“If you give ₹200 to someone, they are ready to do it. Why should I get down to their level?” Annamalai on the online tirade against him

Annamalai IPS has been the talk of the town for the past two days. He joined the BJP on August 25 at New Delhi, in the presence of National General Secretary P Muralidhar Rao, National Spokesperson Sambit Patra and BJP Tamil Nadu President Dr. L. Murugan. Later that day, he met with BJP National President JP Nadda and other prominent leaders of the BJP including Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

His entry into the BJP has rattled the DMK with its henchmen in the media along with its troll army in social media trying to cow down the former IPS officer with memes and comments. However, Annamalai has brushed them off calling them as ‘paid coolies’.

In an interview with Rangaraj Pandey in Chanakayaa Youtube channel, Annamalai said that he doesn’t take the trolls and unwarranted allegations on him seriously.

He said he is up for constructive criticism and would acknowledge any true failure on his part but chooses not spoil the peace of mind by taking the trolls and memes devoid of any logic to heart. He mentioned that he knows how these trolls operate in an organized way as he has seen them during his time as an IPS officer. “We know that these are paid trolls sitting somewhere in Georgia or Ukraine. All these are motivated tweets. If you give ₹200 to someone, they are ready to do it. Why should I get down to their level?”, he says saying that there is no point in reacting to such memes and trolls.

He also says that the online campaigns by Dravidian parties are mostly paid. “The facebook pages and twitter handles are operated from across the world. If you pay someone in Georgia, you will be able to get 66K tweets. If you want to trend #GoBackModi, it can be done. Most of these tweets originate in Georgia. One person will have 10 accounts from 10 IP address and tweet 10 times. If you analyse, you will see that all individual tweets will land up in one IP address. These IP address would belong to Georgia, Ukrain, Peru or Chile.  You give me $100, I will run a campaign against Rangaraj Pandey.”, he said.

Sri Lanka will always follow ‘India First Policy’: Foreign Secretary Jayanath Colombage

Amid the growing threat to nations by China in South and South East Asia, Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Jayanath Colombage in an interview with a Sri Lankan television has said that Sri Lanka will be pursuing an ‘India First’ policy on strategic and security matters.

On Monday (25 August), Colombage said, “President (Gotabaya Rajapaksa) has stated that in terms of strategic security, we will follow an ‘India first’ policy”.

This marks a clear realignment for the Rajpaksa government which is perceived as being closer to China.

“We cannot afford to be a strategic security threat to India and we don’t have to be. We need to benefit from India. The President has clearly said that you are our first priority as far as security is concerned but I have to deal with other players for economic prosperity,” Colombage added.

Colombage in his interview had said that Sri Lanka will always pursue a ‘’neutral’ foreign policy, but it will protect India’s strategic interests no matter what. What is even more interesting is when he accepted that the leasing away of
the Hambantota port to China for a period of 99 years was a ‘mistake’. He said “it is now best to correct the mistake we have done.. yes, it can happen…. But then over a long period of time giving that much control may not be the best option. This government will be here maybe next 5 years or 10 years, we don’t know. But then things will continue. 99 years is a very long time”, Colombage said.

6 years of Jan Dhan: 40.35 crore beneficiaries, ₹1.31 lakh crore worth deposits, majority of the beneficiaries are rural India and women

The flagship scheme of Narendra Modi government, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), completed 6 years on August 28, 2020. In the past years, 40.35 crore beneficiaries have been banked under the scheme with total deposits amount to ₹1.31 lakh crores.

A majority of the beneficiaries are women (55.2%) and 63.6% of the total beneficiaries belong to rural areas.

About 8 crore PMJDY accounts receive Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) from the government under various schemes.

Speaking on the 6th anniversary of PMJDY, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has been the foundation stone for the Modi government’s people-centric economic initiatives. Whether it is direct benefit transfers, COVID-19 financial assistance, PM-KISAN, increased wages under MGNREGA, life and health insurance cover, the first step was to provide every adult with a bank account, which PMJDY has nearly completed.”

The government had credited ₹30,705 crores in women PMJDY accounts during April-June 2020 under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.

Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Thakur said “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, PMJDY has brought the unbanked into the banking system, expanded the financial architecture of India and brought financial inclusion to over 40 crore account holders. A majority of the beneficiaries are women and most of the accounts are from rural India. In today’s COVID19 times, we have witnessed the remarkable swiftness and seamlessness with which DBTs have empowered and provided financial security to the vulnerable sections of society. An important aspect is that DBTs via PM Jan Dhan accounts have ensured every rupee reaches its intended beneficiary and prevented systemic leakage.”

The PMJDY was launched in the year 2014 to ensure access to various financial services like having a bank account, access to need based credit, remittances facility, direct benefit transfer of subsidies and scholarships, insurance and pension to weaker sections and low income groups.

Initially, the PMJDY sought to ensure that every household in rural and urban areas had one person with a bank account. Now it is focusing on providing bank accounts to every unbanked adult.

Indu Makkal Katchi to protest at Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border seeking nationwide ban on PFI and SDPI

On August 11, a large and an angry Muslim mob went on a rampage in Bengaluru after taking offence to a Facebook comment by the nephew of a local Dalit Congress MLA Akhand Srinivasa Murthy.

The rioters attacked and attempted to set on fire the residence of Congress MLA. They also damaged many houses and torched vehicles in the area. The mob also pelted stones at the DJ Halli police station, vandalized and torched the police vehicles. A few were killed and many police officers were injured along with loss of public and private property.

It is being said that PFI and SDPI are behind this violence ‘as a show of power’ as in 2018, Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy contested on a Congress ticket and SDPI had not fielded any candidate.

In light of this, the Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) led by its leader Arjun Sampath is organizing a protest today (August 28) at the Tamil Nadu – Karnataka border near Hosur seeking a nationwide ban on the Islamist organization. In the press release the IMK said that the aim of the PFI and SDPI “is to burn alive all the members of the Pulakesi Nagar MLA’s family” adding that money, jewellery, documents and property were looted.

“Sixty percent of the people living in the area are Tamils and Scheduled community people. Members of the PFI and SDPI have been very well- planned and have been involved in arson attacks on Tamils and scheduled castes.”, the press release said.

It said that the ‘human-chain’ formed to protect the temple was nothing but an eye-wash adding that “it was a planned riot”.

“On the day of Krishna Jayanthi and on the day of Bhumipuja in Ayodhya, for the construction of Ram temple, they portrayed Krishna and Rama in a very ugly way on Facebook. The Dalit MLA’s relative Naveen’s Facebook page has been misused to post a picture of the Prophet Mohammad”, and said that it was used as an attempt to brainwash Muslims to riot in the streets.

It also said that Kerala’s Communist Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan too had accused the PFI and SDPI of creating a Pakistan in Kerala.

In 2019, Thirubuvanam G. Ramalingam, a Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) functionary was killed by the members of these organizations as he had opposed their attempts to convert the villagers to Islam.

The IMK’s press release highlighted that these organizations are already banned in the state of Chhattisgarh and noted that they should be banned in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka too.

It also said that Vidudhalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and its leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, the Dravida Kazhagam (DK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and called for monitoring these organziations closely.

It also questioned why the private news channels who often conduct debate and talk about freedom of expression did not discuss on the Bangalore riots. “Congress Dalit MLA has been attacked. Why Tamil Nadu and All India Congress Party is silent? Tamils and Scheduled caste people have been attacked, why have the Tamil Nadu opposition parties not opened their mouth?”, it asked in its press release.

“The reason is that they are working hand in hand with Islamic fundamentalist organizations including PFI and SDPI. They are always trying to hold such riots in Tamil Nadu. Their violent speeches have been recorded during the anti- Indian citizenship protest. Therefore, it should be banned in Tamil Nadu”, the IMK said.

It also mentioned that a complaint has also been submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban these organizations across India.

Pakistan, a surrogate force of China against India

In a move aimed to change and challenge the status quo of the Indian Navy, China has given Pakistan advanced guided-missile frigate, the largest it has built for any country, equipped with state-of-the-art radars and missiles.

This development comes at a time when India is facing a potential two-front war with China and Pakistan as the former keeps escalating tensions in Ladakh.

As per reports, China has given Pakistan Type 054A/P, a guided-missile frigate which is the largest combat ship China has sold to a foreign navy. By 2021, the Pakistan navy is expected to receive three more similar warships, adding more muscle to its navy and give planners in the Indian Navy something to think about.

“The Type 054A is a multi-role frigate and is recognized as the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) fleet of surface combatants with 30 vessels in commission. They have a length of 134 meters, a beam of 16 meters for a displacement of 4,000 tons,”, the navalnews.com reported.

The ships given to Pakistan are equivalent to the Talwar class guided missile frigates designed and built by Russia for the Indian Navy. India has six of these ships and there are plans to induct four more to bolster and secure our maritime defence. As reports, the Type-054 class is equipped with the state of the art surface, subsurface, anti-air weapons, combat management system, and sensors. These new ships will be the most advanced weapons platform in the hands of Pakistan’s surface navy.

The frigates given to Pakistan cost 350 million dollars and many are asking how Pakistan could afford this when it is in serious financial distress. But it is very clear, the intention of China is to arm Pakistan is to force India to split and spread its military resources. India has a much larger and modern navy because it has one of the largest coastlines in the world.

At present, China is the chief weapons supplier to Pakistan after the United States stopped giving modern weapons systems like the F-16 fighter jets. This gave China the opportunity to fill the void. It now controls Pakistan and is using it as a proxy against India. Think tanks that monitor the sale of weapons believe 73% of Pakistan’s arms came from China.

China is not only helping Pakistan modernise its air force and the navy, but it is also going to equip them with armed drones. China will supply four attack drones to Pakistan and along with 236 Howitzer guns. This deal was struck in December 2019, worth $512 million.

However, what is most significant development is the growing interoperability of weapons platforms between both nations. India just concluded a large naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal with the U.S Navy to have better communication and interoperability. Clear communication between allies is necessary during a crisis.

It must be noted that the timing of the sale of these advanced warships by China to Pakistan comes when Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met with his counterpart Wang Yi at the Chinese holiday resort of Hainan on August 21.

However, any sale of weapons to Pakistan by China must have come with caveats. There was growing resentment between Pakistan and China with regards to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The latter had accused it of not providing Chinese workers adequate security. With this deal in the bag, it would not come as a surprise if Pakistan makes more concessions to its territorial integrity.

Many strategic experts believe that CPEC is prepped for failure. However, it is now getting clear that China wants the Gwadar port to be its new naval base for PLAN near the strategic shipping lane of in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf. This is the most sensitive waterway in the Middle East and can be used as a chokepoint for global oil supplies.

Maximum Pressure in the Strait of Hormuz: The US-Iran Standoff | Countercurrents

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway that links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. This is a very narrow waterway and is only 21 miles wide, and the width of the shipping lane in either direction is just 2 miles, separated by a 2-mile buffer zone.

As per a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, crude oil carrying tankers carrying from ports on the Persian Gulf must pass through the strait and on a daily bases, and estimated 21 million barrels of oil flows through it which is nearly a third of global seaborne oil trade and about 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption.

The new warships given to Pakistan are just part of a bigger plan by China and will act as its guardian in this region with Chinese officers in charge. It wants Pakistan as a counterbalance in the Arabian Sea and now is developing deep ties with Iran which on occasion threatened to block the crucial waterway.

Another aspect is the growing corporation between the navies of India, U.S, Japan and Australia in the Indian Ocean Region, the Pacific to stop China dominating in the South China Sea. China sees the Quad as a threat and India had previously refrained from inviting Australia. However, its bullish attitude has forced India to rethink its strategy of not doing anything to make the dragon angry.

The days of pacifying China are long gone and India has shown that it can stand up to any threat posed by both China and Pakistan. Derek Grossman, a senior defence analyst at the California-based Rand Corp said, “With India appearing poised to invite Australia to the Malabar naval exercises this year, the symbolism will not be lost on China. Having all four Quad members conducting a de facto Quad military exercise will demonstrate unified resolve to counter and compete with China across the Indo-Pacific and indeed the world.”

Sameer Lalwani, a South Asia expert at the Washington-based Stimson Center says, “If Australia is invited to join the Malabar exercises, it indeed would provide renewed optimism for military operationalization of the Quad. Also, there were significant U.S. and Indian guided-missile ships deployed together cannot go unnoticed and suggests the potential for formidable air defence and anti-submarine-warfare operations”.

China can give modern warships to Pakistan but India has more friends in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region who could also be part of future defence exercises.

It is clear that with the sale of advanced navy frigates to Pakistan, China is looking to make Pakistan a surrogate fighting force for China and an extension of its ambitious plan to have a Blue Water Navy.

Banned in China, making inroads in India: The growing threat of a Chinese Christian cult

Even as the world is yet to come out of the Wuhan virus unleashed by China, it seems like it is brewing another potion to foment trouble in other countries. This time, with a Chinese female Jesus cult. The Church of Almighty God. This is the name of a new Chinese Christian cult that is allegedly making inroads in India. This group is also called the Eastern Lightning Cult.

The Church of Almighty God believes that Jesus has returned as a Chinese woman named Yang Xiangbin. It widely propagates its beliefs through social media platforms such as WhatsApp and YouTube and this cult has claimed a lot of followers both online and offline.

It promotes doomsday scenarios amongst its followers and targets youth and marginalized women who have limited education and family problems to recruit them into their group. For all the love that Jesus preaches, this particular cult is violent in nature. The beauty of it all is the fact that it has been banned in its own parent country China.

A violent cult

The Church of Almighty God is not a brand new cult. In the 1960s and 70s, a Church named Shouters led by Li Changshou, alias Witness Lee, that was gaining popularity and followers. The Church of Almighty God follows the same teachings that the Shouters followed. In 1991 a few ‘scholars’ identified a woman called Yang Xiangbin, who, they believed was the messiah, who had returned in her form. Other than the fact that she was born in northwestern China, not much is known about her.

Member of the Church of Almighty God have involved in various violent incidents.  In 2014, a 37 year old woman was killed by the cult members at McDonald’s outlet in China as she refused to give her number.

Widespread ritots broke out in China after the group used propaganda videos, pamphlets and movie scenes of the doomsday movie ‘2012’ to make people join their cult and hail their female Jesus as the saviour. A woman and 23 students were stabbed to death in Henan province. More than 100 members belonging to this missionary group were arrested.

Concerns raised by Christians in Nagaland

It has been reported that there has been increased activity of this cult in the Northeast, which is in close proximity to China. This cult has been linked with more than 100 incidents of violence, and is rapidly moving towards gaining a foothold in the North-East India.

The Nagaland Baptist Church, which is the central organisation of nearly 1,500 Baptist churches in Nagaland, claims that this organisation is trying to reach people across India, especially the youth through digital platforms. Dr Zelhou Keyho, who is a member of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council, has said that this outfit is a grave threat to the country as well as the world, and should be immediately clamped down.

Another weapon of China?

While China denies any ties with the cult, and has even clamped down on them in its own country, its words and actions cannot be treated at face value.

It is not to be believed that China is indeed against this cult, because, this treatment is not unique to it. Since China is officially atheist, clampdown on religion is a regular affair in the Communist country. The Chinese government wants citizens to know and follow only one religion — the Communist Party of China. So, it made an example out of the Church of Almighty God and continues to crush all religions – Christianity, Islam or Buddhism. The mistreatment of the Uighur Muslims or its extermination of Buddhists in Tibet is a testament to how China treats religions.

Following their ban in their native country, the group now operates entirely online. They recruit mainly youth and also anyone interested in joining this cult. But, here’s the million-dollar question. If this cult had been prohibited from operating in China, where is it getting its funds from? More importantly, who is funding it in India? How is it gaining presence in India? Is China erasing any trace of this organisation in its own country so it could wreak havoc elsewhere in the world? These are questions that are yet to be answered in this regard, and one can only think if this is yet another China product that will be blowing up in our face when we least expect it to.

Hurricane Laura wrecks the US

Hurricane Laura has been wreaking havoc in the United States with power cuts and flash floods bringing normal lives of half a million houses to a standstill. Louisiana has suffered the highest due to this hurricane.

Although the storm has not reached grave levels, it is still life-threatening. Meteorologists predict that this has the potential to spread up to 65 kilometres inland. It has struck the Gulf Coast of the United States at 240 kilometres per hour and is the biggest to hit that coast so far. Due to this, over half a million residents in the Louisiana and Texas States have been asked to relocate.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said early on Thursday: “We’ve had daylight now for a couple of hours. It appears there is more structural damage from the wind and a little less flood damage than we anticipated.” He confirmed the first fatality in his state, adding: “I suspect that won’t be the last, although I pray that we don’t have more.”

Before Laura and another storm, Marco, had earlier swept across the Caribbean, killing 24 people. Hurricane Laura made landfall shortly after midnight on Wednesday evening and it is feared that Laura could spawn tornadoes.

Muslims have an advantage in the interview stage of UPSC Civil Services Exams

A 2017 report by the online news portal YugaParivartan came out with a startling find that Muslim candidates on an average get 13 marks higher in the interview stage than the candidates from other communities in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Taking this as cue, the YugaParivartan in 2017 came out with a statistical analysis report that showed the substantial difference in marks scored by Muslims at the interview stage vis a vis other communities. Of the 1099 successful candidates who cleared the exam that year, they had used data of the first 525 candidates.

It is to be noted that of the 42 Muslims candidates who made it this year, 27 are from Zakat Foundation. Zakat Foundation is run by Muhammad Jafer Qureshi. His colleague Syed Zafar Mahmood serves as the President. Zafar Mahmood on behalf of Zakat Foundation had publicly opposed the ban on Popular Front of India in 2018. Apart from this, Qureshi  is a trustee of the Al-Khair Foundation, a charity that runs that radical television station IQRA TV. Qureshi also has ties with Islamic Salafi preacher Zakir Naik.

It is this Zakat Foundation that grooms Muslims for cracking the UPSC exams.
