Rihanna faces another blow as Louis Vuitton withdraws her fashion line citing ‘poor sales’

Luxury fashion conglomerate Louis Vuitton, or LVMH as it is commonly known, recently suspended the fashion line “Fenty Fashion House” indefinitely, citing poor sales. It is to be noted that this account belongs to the pop star, Rihanna, who has become the favourite child of controversy after tweeting about the farmers’ protests in India.

Rihanna became the first Black woman to head a fashion label when Louis Vuitton launched her fashion line two years ago. The French fashion house is run by LMVH, which also owns Dior.

In a statement to CNN Style, LVMH said the pause was a joint decision with Rihanna “pending better conditions,” and LVMH will continue to support other elements of the Fenty empire, concentrating on “the growth and long-term development” of her beauty and skincare lines Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin, as well as lingerie line Savage X Fenty. The goal is to support “the Fenty ecosystem focusing on lingerie, cosmetics and skincare,” according to the LVMH statement.

Thanks to the pandemic, personal grooming brands were the most affected and Fenty was no exception, according to their CFO. “We are still in a launching phase and we have to figure out exactly what is the right offer,” LVMH Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Guiony told analysts about Fenty in October. “It’s still a work in progress.”

Tamil Nadu: Islamists threaten violence against Marwari community, asks them to leave the state

In an incident that triggers the haunting memories of the violence perpetrated on Hindus by the Islamists in Kashmir, a bunch of Islamists in Tamil Nadu belonging to a fundamentalist organization issued pamphlets asking the Marwari community to leave the state.

The pamphlet states that the Marwaris are funding the BJP which according to them is trying ‘to foment communal unrest’ in the state where Hindus, Muslims and Christians have apparently been living as ‘friends’. It also goes on to say that Marwaris are the ‘fuel’ that keeps the ‘vehicle’ BJP going and added that ‘if the fuel is stopped, the vehicle would ‘automatically stop.

It stated that any violence and damage to public property will be the responsibility of Marwari community and the government should collect compensation from them.

The pamphlet issued by a Tiruchi based Islamist group named ‘Tamizhaga Makkal Jananaayaga Katchi’ (Tamil Nadu People’s Democracy Party) has also accused the Marwari community of ‘stealing jobs and business opportunities from Tamilians’ and demanded that Marwaris leave Tamil Nadu and go back to their ‘native place’.

In the end, the pamphlet issues a threat, “We will provide a livelihood to those who come here.. if you do mischief we’ll shut down your shops permanently”.

To stir up conflict, the pamphlet also said that BJP leader Kalyanaraman spoke ill of Islam’s prophet because he has the support and financial backing of the Marwaris and asked all the shop keepers to close their shops in solidarity with Muslims in condemning Kalyanaraman’s communal speech.

Muslims in the area distributed pamphlets to the shopkeepers and not so subtly, asked them to shut their shops on 8th February.

This act of terror has sent a shockwave in the Marwari community who have settled in this area for generations and understand the local custom and language. The Marwari community is known to assimilate with any local population were it does business and have always maintained a cordial and respectful relationship.

BJP cadre protested against this hate campaign and sat in support with Marwaris and North Indian communities, demanding that TPDP must be held accountable for spreading hate against a particular community by advocating violence following which 4  functionaries from the fundamentalist organization were arrested by the police.

It is pertinent to know that TPDP was founded by one K M Shariff, a disciple of Palani Baba aka Ahmed Ali, a notorious fundamentalist Muslim leader.

This is not a new phenomenon in Tamil Nadu has seen against a particular community. The state is known for its notorious hate campaigns against Brahmins. Dravida Kazhagam, Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi, Thirumurugan Gandhi’s May 17 Movement have targeted and peddled hate against certain communities.

In recent times, Tamil Nadu has seen a dramatic rise in Islamic fundamentalism. A man named Dinesh from Chennai was attacked by 80 Muslims who threatened to kill him for distributing pens with the words ‘we support Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC)’.

Pakistan asks China to defer payments on power projects under BRI as it has no money

Pakistan which is going through its worst economic crisis has asked all-weather friend China for relief on payments for power projects Beijing financed over the past eight years under the Belt and Road Initiative.

This latest development has come with Pakistan not having enough any money to repay the debt and are in discussion to ease repayment of debt on about a dozen power plants.

China has invested nearly 70 billion dollars on China Pakistan Economic Corridor wherein China will have access to the warm water port of Gwadar in Balochistan.

China has been under increasing pressure that it hoped would ease after Joe Biden became President, however, the new administration has also criticized China for its debt traps policy.

For Pakistan, the idea of being part of the BRI was to not only get its antiquated railway system modernized but also develop many other infrastructures and reap the benefit of its geo-strategic location as the gateway to central Asia.

However, things have not panned out as they had planned and Pakistan will now formally make the request to defer debt payments to China.

Sessions court judge in Kerala gives Triple Talaq to wife, threatens her with consequences if she objects

In a shocking incident in Kerala, an upholder of the law took the law into his own hands and issued ‘Triple Talaq’ to his wife in Palakkad district.

B Kalam Pasha a session court Judge in the Palakkad district gave Triple Talaq to his wife after which she approached the Kerala High Court to move forward with a complaint against him.

Triple Talaq was made illegal by the Parliament and invites criminal proceedings against the husband who invokes it. The wife of the judge has alleged that Justice B. Kamal Pasha and his brother had threatened her of dire consequences if she refuses to the divorce.

In her complaint, the women said Kalam Pasha issued Triple Talaq against her on March 1, 2018, by a letter. However, he sent her another letter that claimed due to typing error the original date was March 1, 2017.

The change of date is nothing but a mere technicality because in order to avoid legal procedures the judge mentioned a new date before the law banning triple talaq came into force.

In India, it is not easy to register a case against a judge and only with the permission of the Chief Justice of the High Court, a case can be registered against a lower courts judge.

Previously, the primary investigation was carried out by the Vigilance department following the matter coming to the notice of High Court.

Supreme Court in August 2017 banned the practice of Triple Talaq following which the Parliament passed a bill criminalizing the barbaric practice that demeaned Muslim women and gave Muslim men unilateral power to end a marriage.

SC seeks Centre’s response on granting minority status to Hindus of 9 states

"Let The Past Not Haunt The Future": Supreme Court To Hear Challenges To Places Of Worship Act supreme court allahabad high court panchayat recount vantara waqf amendment posh babri masjid facebook post

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre seeking its reply to a petition asking the apex court to define the term ‘minority’ and issue necessary guidelines for its identification. The petition also seeks the granting of the ‘minority status’ to Hindus in nine states.

The Supreme Court also sought the Central Government’s reply to the petitioner’s request for the transfer of various petitions seeking grant of minority status to Hindus in nine states, which are pending in respective High Courts, to the Supreme Court.

The petition, filed by advocate and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyaya, challenges the validity of section 2(C) of National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992, which gives unfettered power to the Centre to arbitrarily declare any community a minority. The petition says that Hindus are a minority in nine states of the country ― Ladakh, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur. Despite this, the minority Hindu populace are not getting the benefit of ‘minority status’.

The petition further states that the Central Government has declared Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains as minorities under Section 2 (c) of the Act but it has not declared Jewish and Bahais as minority.

“Legitimate share of the minorities is being siphoned off arbitrarily to unqualified sections of the population, because of non-identification and non-notification of minorities at State level,” the petition said.

Upadhyaya, in his petition, also stated that the minority welfare schemes are not being appropriately used in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

The denial of minority rights to real minorities and arbitrary and irrational disbursement of minority benefits to the majority infringes upon the fundamental right to the prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, the petition says.

The 2002 Bench of eleven judges of the Supreme Court, while interpreting the Act of 1992, had said that minorities are considered on a linguistic or religious basis. The petition argues that states have been recognized on linguistic basis, so the status of minority should be state-wise and not at the national level.

After Canadian MP grilling their country’s Minister, Justin Trudeau telephones PM Modi, asks for COVID-19 vaccines

Unfounded, Absurd And Baseless Insinuations Part Of Canada's Strategy To Discredit India: MEA

Canadian Minister Justin Trudeau who was recently caught in controversy when he supported the farmer’s protests called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (10 February), requesting for Covid-19 vaccines.

This comes after Michelle Rempel Garner, a Conservative MP and Shadow Minister for Health, in a meeting of the standing committee on health, asked the incumbent Procurement Minister Anita Anand if the Trudeau government had reached out to Prime Minister Modi for vaccines, to which the Minister did not reply positively and said ‘I do not know’.

In the last couple of weeks, India has generously gifted the indigenously developed Covid-19 vaccines to 20 countries under its vaccine diplomacy in keeping with its “Neighborhood First”.

An official statement released from the PMO said that Trudeau informed Modi about Canada’s requirement for Covid-19 vaccines from India and India will supply the vaccine under the Vaccine Maitri (Vaccine Friendship).

In an official tweet, Modi said, “Was happy to receive a call from my friend @JustinTrudeau Assured him that India would do its best to facilitate supplies of COVID vaccines sought by Canada.”

Trudeau told Modi that, “if the world managed to conquer COVID-19, it would be significant because of India’s tremendous pharmaceutical capacity, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in sharing this capacity with the world.”

Modi on his part has given assurance to the people of Canada that India would do its best to support Canada’s vaccination efforts, just as it had done for many other countries already.

The two leaders also discussed the common perspective shared by India and Canada on many important geopolitical issues and agreed to continue the close collaboration between both the countries in fighting global challenges like climate change and the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trudeau also said that he is looking forward to meeting Modi in various important international events later this year.

M Nageswara, a retired Indian Police Service officer said in a tweet that “a written assurance from @JustinTrudeau to dismantle #Khalistan architecture including financial, and no overt or covert #Khalistani activities will be allowed from Canadian soil” ought to be considered as a precondition for supplying the vaccines.

https://twitter.com/MNageswarRaoIPS/status/1359571503956697088

India has certainly come a long way when we had to stand in line and beg for medicines. Also, Trudeau is under a lot of fire in Canada for his mishandling of the pandemic and the inability to produce a vaccine.

“Muslim girls can marry anyone after attaining puberty despite being under 18”: Punjab & Haryana HC

In a shocking ruling, the Punjab and Haryana High Court declared that Muslim girls can now get into a marriage contract with anyone after attaining puberty even if they are under 18 years old. This ruling, says the High Court, is according to the Muslim personal law.

The order was passed by Justice Alka Sarin while hearing a petition filed by a Muslim couple from Punjab. The man was 36 years old, while the woman was 17 years old. They had married according to Islamic traditions, but had faced a lot of opposition from their friends and family. Following this, they had sought protection from the court and had a filed a petition for the same.

Article 195 of the Muslim Personal Law says, “Every Mahommedan (Muslim) of sound mind, who has attained puberty, may enter into a contract of marriage. Lunatics and minors who have not attained puberty may be validly contracted in marriage by their respective guardians. A marriage of a Mahommedan who is (of) sound mind and has attained puberty is void if it is brought about without his consent.”

Stating this provision, the judge ruled that any Muslim girl is governed by the Muslim Sharia law. They cannot be deprived from their fundamental rights just because the couple has married against the wishes of their family members.

This ruling by the High Court comes amid the Centre looking to raising the marriageable age of women in the country to 21 years. However, such a decision is unlikely to affect the country’s Muslim population given that according to the judiciary, they are governed only by Sharia laws and not the country’s laws like the Hindus are.

China announces disengagement from Pangong Tso amid reports of its troops unable to cope up with harsh winter

Tensions seem to be deescalating at the border with the Communist Party of China’s mouth piece stating that both sides have started disengaging at the border after months long standoff.

The Chinese state-affiliated Global Times on 10 February published a direct quote from China’s Defence Ministry that said Chinese troops have begun disengagement on the southern and northern shores of the Pangong Lake.

As per reports, a consensus has been reached during the ninth round of military-commander talks between the two nations.

“Chinese and Indian border troops on the southern and northern shores of Pangong Lake began disengagement as planned on Wednesday according to the consensus reached during the ninth round of military commander-level talks,” the tweet from Global Times read.

China had amassed a massive military force that also involved tanks and some defence journalists have claimed that this engagement includes both Indian and China pulling back armoured columns from southern banks of Pangong Tso, however, the soldiers remain in their respective positions.

Senior defence journalist Nitin Gokhale though has expressed caution over this news, “Just as unexpectedly it had begun, the standoff between India and China is beginning to wind down…given Chinese history of perfidious behaviour, I would be wary of concluding anything either way till details are available”

It must also be noted that China has admitted that most of its troops are not well trained nor do they meet the physical standards to survive the rigours of spending time in such a high altitude area.

There are also reports of China airlifting many of there troops because they suffered various aliments caused by altitude sickness. However, the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force have decades of operational experience in this area and this time around the civilian government throw all its political and diplomatic support behind the military.
