Trouble knocks on Pinarayi’s doors: Former Principal Secretary to CM arrested in Kerala Gold Smuggling Case

M Sivasankar, the former Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and one of the primary accused in the diplomatic gold smuggling case was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, his anticipatory bail in connection with probes by ED and Customs against him was rejected by the Kerala High Court.

Sivasankar has been arrested by the ED for his involvement in the gold smuggling racket along with Swapna Suresh. He has been alleged to have helped Swapna by means of his chartered accountant.

Union Minister and BJP leader V Muraleedharan said that M Shivashankar’s arrest proves CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s involvement in the scam.

Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly and Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said that the Chief Minister’s Office is being ruled by mafias and that Sivasankaran is the first IAS officer in Kerala to be taken into custody by central agencies. “The Chief Minister who shames Kerala has no right to continue in that position.”, Mr. Chennithala said.

The gold smuggling scam came to light after the diplomatic cargo consignment containing 30kg of smuggled gold from UAE was seized by the Customs. While the accused Swapna Suresh, Sandip and Sarith Nair had been already arrested, there were ongoing investigations to nab the kingpins, one of them being M Sivasankar.

Sivasannkar has been arrested under Section 19 of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

TN Govt usurps temple land to build Kallakurichi Collectorate, HR&CE tries to sell off land worth more than ₹88 crore for ₹1.98 crores

14.09 hectares (34.82 acres) of drylands belonging to Sri Arthanareeswarar Temple located at Veerachozhapuram in Kallakurichi district is slated to be alienated by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department to the Government of Tamil Nadu to build the Kallakurichi Collectorate complex.

This land is set to be usurped by the Tamil Nadu government for a pittance of ₹1.98 crores when the actual value of the property amounts to more than ₹88 crores.

What is to be noted is that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Collectorate complex has been held without purchasing the land from the HR&CE department.

Locals and devotees have questioned if whether the Collectorate should be built only by usurping the temple land and whether no area was available.

History of Arthanareeswarar Temple, Veerachozhapuram

The temple with Lord Shiva as the presiding deity is said to be over 1500 years old. Rajaraja Chozhan’s son Rajendra Cholan, one of the greatest Tamil kings belonging to the glorious Chozha empire is said to have built this temple. Legend goes that Rajendra Chozhan was on his to Rameswaram to immerse his father’s ashes and was passing through Veerachozhapuram. Rajendra Chozhan who had halted for the night at Veerachozhapuram found that his father’s ashes have turned into jasmine thereby the village acquiring the name Mallikarjunapuram initially. The village gained the name of Veerachozhapuram due to the increasing influence of the Chozha kings.

According to the history of the temple, the Sivalingam at the temple is said to have been installed by the Siddhars and worshipped. There is also an Amman shrine and four Nandis (Lord Shiva’s vehicle/guardian deity).

The temple built during the Chozha period was rebuilt during the Pallava period. According to the inscription of the temple, Rajendra Chozha had named the presiding deity as the Nagareeswaramudaya Nayanar (Nayanar of Nagareeswaram). The Rajaraja Chozha dynasty sought to build a Rajagopuram (temple tower) towards the south. However, the construction of the Rajagopuram was not been completed due to the death of the person involved in the work. This historical Veerachozhapuram Shiva Temple which has been under the control of Tamil Nadu HR&CE department for 25 years now lies in shambles.

The temple owns 70 acres of land adjoining the Veerachozhapuram border and 10 acres in the V. Palayam village. The temple earned its revenue by leasing the land for farming which was used for performing the annual Theerthavaari Uthsavam during Maasi Magam (occurs in the month of February-March) and other daily rituals. Locals and devotees have made several requests to the HR&CE department to renovate and preserve the dilapidated temple which has fallen on deaf ears.

Several of the temple idols have been stolen many years ago which includes statues of Thirupuraandhakar, Thirupurasunthari, and other panchaloha idols. A lawyer named Rajendran had filed a case regarding the matter with the Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu police in May 2018.

To safeguard the idols, 13 of the them were housed at a safehouse in Vizhupuram.

The blatant usurpation of temple land by Tamil Nadu government

After the new district of Kallakurichi was carved out from Vizhupuram district, authorities began looking for land to build a new integrated Collectorate complex comprising of the District Collector’s office, Superintendent of Police’s office, district court, playground, etc. 35 acres of the 40 acres land belonging to the Arthanareeswarar Temple was chosen and the HR&CE department is set to sell the land to the Revenue department.

Accusations have arisen that the Revenue department is trying to buy the land for a rate far lesser than the market price. The HR&CE department itself has said that the value of the 40 acres land is around ₹29.17 crores. The land has to be sold at a rate 275% more than the this rate which comes to ₹80.21 crores.

But the Kallakurichi Collector has valued the property at just ₹1.98 crore. This has upset the people of the area and other Hindu devotees.

In a blatant disregard for due process of law, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Collectorate complex was held on October 23 and construction work is already underway, even before the purchase of the land by Revenue department.

Administration’s coverup

This has irked the people of the village who are questioning if the government found no other place other than a temple land to build the complex and the motive of government to proceed hastily. They say that the announcement regarding public hearing at the HR&CE office was not properly made. After controversy regarding the matter gained traction in the area, the district administration put up a notice for namesake.

Also, it is said that the HR&CE departement has been spinning an elaborate web of lies stating that the temple is just about a 100 years old and that a consecration ceremony was held 12 years back which has been refuted by the people of the village.

Another textbook example of usurpation of temple lands by the state

This is not the first time that a Hindu temple or its property thereof has been encroached. Political parties in Tamil Nadu and the Church have encroached many temple lands across the state. The Tamil Nadu government helmed by both the Dravidian parties have aided these encroachments. In 2009, the then DMK government under Karunanidhi arbitrarily usurped around 293 acres of temple land to build the Central University at Thiruvarur. Similarly, the lands belonging to Mudhugulathur Subramania Swamy Temple in Ramanathapuram was grabbed in 2007. 21.39 acres lands belonging to Prasanna Venkataramana Swamy Temple were usurped arbitrarily in 2009.

Even though there exists a judgement and a government order that prevents acquiring lands of religious nature, the encroachment of temple lands continues.

Many have said that the ownership of the temple lands should remain with the temple while it can be given on lease for non-commercial purposes to support the temple’s revenue. If the HR&CE department hands over the land to the Revenue department, the temple will lose revenue leading to inability to maintain and preserve the temple.

With the temple lands not yet been sold to the Revenue department, the HR&CE department has called for a public hearing on October 29. Temple rights activist TR Ramesh has filed an objection and is leading the fight in the matter.

Those concerned about temples are requested to send their objections to commr.hrce@tn.gov.in and mark copy of the mail to veeracholapuram@OurTemplesOurPrideOurRight.in.

Another snub for Pakistan from Saudi Arabia as it removes PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan from Pakistan’s map

In another victory for India the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has removed Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and Gilgit-Baltistan from Pakistan’s map.

This news was reported by PoK activist Amjad Ayub Mirza, an outspoken critic of the Pakistani establishment, on Wednesday (October 28).

“Saudi Arab removes Pakistani occupied Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan from Pakistan’s map!!!!,” he tweeted.

He also tweeted a picture that was captioned, “Saudi Arabia’s Diwali gift to India– removes Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from Pakistan’s map,” the picture’s text read.

Saudi Arabia released a 20 Riyal banknote to commemorate its presidency of organising the G-20 Summit on November 21-22 and in that banknote Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Kashmir are not shown as parts of Pakistan.

Many in Pakistan see this as an attempt by Saudi Arabia to disgrace Pakistan as it is now siding more closely with India, the US, and in the Middle East, it is helping Israel.

A while back the Imran Khan government had released a new political map of Pakistan, which also included the Indian territories of Junagadh, Sir Creek and Manavadar in Gujarat along with Jammu and Kashmir and a part of Ladakh.

However, such a snub from Saudi Arabia must be a hard blow to Pakistan and it is not even have the power to raise this issue.

India on 27 October enabled its citizens to buy land in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

The stray dogs menace at IIT-Madras: Deers in campus dying due to stray dogs fed by ‘dog-lovers’

The deers inside the lush green forests of IIT-Madras faces an existential threat. Over the years, several deers have been found dead in the IIT Madras campus. In 2017, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in response to a petition filed at the National Green Tribunal mentioned that 50 deers and blackbucks were killed by speeding vehicles, 50 died eating plastics and a whopping 291 were hunted down by stray dogs. While concerns have been raised in the past about the growing population of stray dogs and the threat they pose to the wildlife in the forest, very little heed has been paid to curb the menace.

The IIT-Madras campus is situated inside the Guindy Reserve Forest area which is home to spotted deer, blackbucks, macaques, and several other species. As per the ‘Rapid Assessment of Biodiversity’ study, there are around 432 species of flora and fauna that includes 12 species of mammals, 51 species of birds.

However, there has been a huge increase in the stray dog population inside the campus, thanks to the ‘dog lovers’ within the campus, which is now threatening these wildlife species. It is said that currently the IIT-Madras campus has 170 stray dogs.

These dogs, like their wolf cousins, form packs at night and attack the spotted deers and blackbucks. With their strong sense of smell, they hunt down pregnant deer and fawns thereby leading to a drastic decrease in their count.

Here is a list of some of the brutal attacks by stray dogs and deers and blackbucks. (Warning: Link contains disturbing images of dead animals).

In December 2018, stray dogs killed 2 deers within two weeks, of which one of them was a blackbuck, an endangered species. In a report by DT Next, a lab technician working at the institution was quoted saying that the number of deers succumbing to attacks by stray dogs have been on the rise and alleged that even if the IIT-Madras management tried to take protective measures, ‘dog-loving groups’ come and take counter measures.

The Tamil Nadu government while submitting its counter affidavit to a petition filed at the National Green Tribunal (NGT) stated that the IIT-Madras administration and the Greater Chennai Corporation should take action to prevent stray dogs from entering the premises and that the attack on the blackbucks from stray dogs needs to be prevented.

The Forest Department submitted to the NGT that generation of solid wastes and presence of stray dogs affected the free ranging wildlife in the campus. It stated that improper disposal of garbage in the campus attracted large number of stray dogs posing a great threat to the blackbucks and deers making them live in perpetual fear.  It went on to add that all existing dog population must be removed and households keeping pet dogs should be brought under regulatory provisions.

These submissions can be found in the NGT order released in September 2020.

However, any attempt to remove the stray dogs and bring in regulations to protect the endangered species is being obstructed by ‘dog-lover’ groups in the campus. Contradicting the recommendations made by the Tamil Nadu government and the Forest Department, which was also reiterated by the NGT, the Chennai Wildlife Warden CH Padma who is also part of the committee constituted by the NGT has increased the number of feeding centres inside the campus for stray dogs after pressure from these groups. Earlier, the Estate Manager of IIT-Madras restricted the stray dog feeding centres to five. This has now been increased to 14 by the Chennai Wildlife Warden along with permitting feeding of home-cooked food.

To curb this move that could further inflict damage on the campus wildlife, the IIT-Madras administration has decided to impose fines and take penal action against those feeding stray dogs beyond the designated area and time. Apart from imposing fines, the administration has also decided to take penal action like cancellation of dog feeder cards and cancelling of hostel/quarters accommodation. This is now being opposed by the ‘dog-loving’ groups saying that the administration’s move is tantamount to ‘harassment’ and even ‘abetment to suicide’.

The IIT-Madras administration is also being pressurized by the Animal Welfare Board of India which recently issued a notice for ‘illegal catching and relocation/impounding of stray dogs’ in the campus stating that relocation of stray dogs outside the campus is a violation of Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules 2001. The notice was issued based on a complaint made by one Tryphena Dudley, an alumnus of the college who had alleged that dogs are being impounded in a concealed area in the campus and that those dogs which are taken for sterilisation are not being returned back.

IIT-Madras had engaged Karunya Trust for neutering the dogs and relocating some of them to places outside the campus.

In its notice, the AWBI asked IIT-Madras to ensure that no one is prevented from feeding or caring for dogs and cats and also ensuring that they are not relocated.

Speaking to The Commune, S Muralidharan, a Chennai based animal activist said that it is outrageous that a reserve forest is being used as a feeding and breeding ground for stray dogs. “We all love dogs and there are a plenty of them on the streets. But to bring them into a reserve forest, feed them mindlessly which later goes on to kill native wildlife in the forest is just ridiculous”. Mr. Muralidharan said.

He said that the argument of dogs being territorial animals and that their relocation would cause them harm is just humbug as most of the dogs are relocated from elsewhere into the campus by ‘dog-lovers’.

He also called the latest move of the Chennai Wildlife Warden to increase feeding centres for stray dogs inside the campus as ‘appalling’.

“Earlier they tried to transport some of the deers of the IIT-Madras to a forest in Tamil Nadu. Almost all of them died midway of cardiac arrest. Deers are very sensitive animals.”, he said.

He said that AWBI under the influence of BJP MP Maneka Gandhi is working hand-in-glove with the ‘dog-lover’ groups and organizations like Blue Cross to fill Indian streets full of diseased stray dogs so that they can invite multinational pharma companies for selling rabies vaccines and other medicines.

“If anyone wants to love and care for stray dogs, let them adopt one and raise it safely in their homes. A reserve forest is no place for stray dogs”, Mr. Murali said.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee spokesperson Mr. Americai V Narayanan has called for the implementation of the NGT order and relocation of the stray dogs from IIT-Madras to save the deers.

The Indu Makkal Katchi too has called for the relocation of stray dogs in the campus.

Volunteers of the wildlife club at IIT-Madras note that periodic relocation of stray dogs that used to happen till 2014 had helped the blackbuck population thrive in the campus. They say that periodic relocation and stopping the entry of new dogs into the campus is necessary for the well-being of the wildlife species like deers and blackbucks.

Stray dogs which are a human dependent species are being brought in by ‘dog-lovers’ and allowed to increase in population which is now infringing upon the right to life of other native wildlife species. While there are enough safeguards to stop cruelty to dogs, a misplaced sense of animal activism is now threatening the wildlife within the campus.

Charlie Hebdo’s latest caricature of Erdogan sparks Turkish outrage

Coming amidst the spat between France and Turkey following the beheading of the French school teacher Samuel Paty by an Islamist inspired by ISIS, the French satirical magazine Charle Hebdo has published another controversial caricature of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

This brutal caricature of the Turkish ruler that was published over a front-page in its latest edition comes after Erdogan questioned the mental health of Macron for insulting Muslims and Islam.

The front-page caricature of Wednesday’s (October 28) edition of Charlie Hebdo scathingly shows Erdogan in a t-shirt and underpants, drinking a can of beer (alcohol is forbidden in Islam) and lifting up the hijab of a woman to reveal her naked bottom.

The caption translated from French Reads, “Ooh, the prophet!” the character says in a speech bubble, while the title proclaims “Erdogan: in private, he’s very funny”.

https://twitter.com/Charlie_Hebdo_/status/1321134572105572352

Immediately Erdogan’s top press aide, Fahrettin Altun sent out a tweet, “We condemn this most disgusting effort by this publication to spread its cultural racism and hatred,”.

In another tweet sent by Altun, he said, “French President Macron’s anti-Muslim agenda is bearing fruit! Charlie Hebdo just published a series of so-called cartoons full of despicable images purportedly of our President.”

This has triggered a wave of protest by Ummah, the solidarity among the whole community of Muslims bound together by ties of religion. In light of this, France has cautioned its citizens living in or traveling to Islamic countries to be careful and take additional safety measures, Reuters reported.

There has been an exchange of barbs between the French President and the Turkish President after the brutal beheading of French schoolteacher Samuel Paty by a suspected Islamist who had apparently been irked by the teacher’s portrayal of Prophet Mohammad.

The Turkish President in a televised speech said that Muslims were now “subjected to a lynch campaign similar to that against Jews in Europe before World War II and European leaders should tell the French president to stop his hate campaign”.

Macron said that the teacher, Samuel Paty, was killed because Islamists wanted France’s future and that France would not give up the right to freedom of expression. He also pledged to fight against “Islamist separatism” that threatened Muslim communities around France.

A few days ago, the cartoons of Mohammed that were published in Charlie Hebdo was projected on the wall of a government building in France much to the anger of Muslims around the world.

In 2015, two brothers, Muslim jihadists who were inspired by the ISIS attack killed 12 people dead, including some of its most famed cartoonists who worked for the publication.

The relationship between France and Turkey has also taken a geopolitical turn to the worst due to the ongoing Greek-Turkish maritime dispute and also the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The French foreign ministry has issued a safety instruction for citizens of France in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iraq and Mauritania and in an official statement have said, “It is recommended to exercise the greatest vigilance, especially while travelling, and in places that are frequented by tourists or expatriate communities,”.

In another development, Pakistan decided to recall its ambassador from Paris, however, it turned out that Islamabad had never sent its envoy in the first place. Erdogan who is now very popular in Pakistan has urged Turks and fellow Muslims to boycott French products amid a wave of anti-France protests in Muslim-majority countries.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan sent out a tweet in which he said, “Hallmark of a leader is he unites human beings, as Mandela did, rather than dividing them.” Khan went on to accuse Macron that he encourages “Islamophobia by attacking Islam rather than the terrorists who carry out violence”.

16 more Rafale 4.5 gen fighters to arrive in India by April 2021

The Indian Air Force (IAF), is all set to receive 16 more 4.5 generation Rafale fighters by the end of April 2021, reported by Swarajya.

The IAF already has five Rafale fighter jets which were recently inducted into the No.17 Squadron (Golden Arrows) at a formal ceremony in Ambala in the presence of the Indian and the French defense ministers.

As per reports, three of the fighter aircraft will arrive in India on 5 November bolstering the strength of the current squadron.

In another development, unlike the last time when the Rafale fighters had to make a stopover in the UAE, these three fighters will fly to India directly from the Dassault Aviation assembly plant in Bordeaux-Merignac facility in southwest France to India refueled mid-air all the way.

India will receive three more Rafale fighters in January 2021, three in March, and seven in April, the news report says.

The IAF has already been flying the Rafales with its advanced onboard weapons systems on ‘familiarization’ sorties. The arrival of these fighters could not have come at a more crucial time as India is facing an aggressive and belligerent China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

With the timely arrival of 16 more fighters by April, the Golden Arrows squadron will get all of its 18 fighters. The IAF plans to place at least three fighters for the eastern front and they will be based at the Hasimara Airbase in West Bengal.
