TN BJP leader SG Suryah hits out at RaGa’s TN visit: Exposes Congress’ stance on Jallikattu, asks if he has quarantined after Italy visit

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to visit Tamil Nadu on January 14, and watch a jallikattu event in Avaniapuram near Madurai during the Pongal festivities. The Wayanad MP’s visit comes ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly polls due in April-May this year.

This has led to many questioning the Congress leader’s visit as the party was instrumental in bringing the ban on the sport that is seen as a symbol of Tamil culture and heritage. Many had pointed out that the Congress in its 2016 Assembly election manifesto had declared to ban Jallikattu. But, there have been disputing references regarding this.

Leaders have also raised concerns if whether Rahul Gandhi has quarantined himself after his Italy visit.

Spokesperson of BJP Tamil Nadu SG Suryah in a series of tweets, lashed out at Rahul Gandhi coming to Tamil Nadu to witness Jallikattu pointing out that the Congress party had actively ensured the banning of the ancient Tamil sport.

He also asked how come the Congress leader who is supposedly yet to return from his Italy trip is directly coming down to the state to participate in mass gatherings without being under mandatory quarantine for 14 days.

“From where is he coming? Whether that country is infected with UK [virus] mutant? Nobody knows anything. Such a mess up @INCTamilNadu”, the BJP leader said in his tweet.

SG Suryah also exposed the Congress party and its leaders regarding their stance on Jallikattu. He pointed out that the Congress in its 2016 manifesto for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections had declared that it would ban Jallikattu.

Time of India report dated April 27, 2016 states that the party had called for a ban on Jallikattu in its 2016 election manifesto. Zee News too reported on the same date quoting ANI that the party promised to completely ban Jallikattu if it comes to power.

India Today too reported that the Congress in its manifesto has  ‘promised prohibition on Jallikattu’. However, an article by The News Minute had noted that the 2016 manifesto of Congress had called for ‘legalization’ of Jallikattu.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee responding to Mr. SG Suryah’s tweet refuted these allegations and said that the party in its manifesto had called for removing the ban on the sport. But the BJP leader was quick to point out the anomaly.

The BJP leader also pointed out to various instances when Congress leaders endorsed the ban on Jallikattu which is quite contrary to what the party is claiming now.

Former PM Manmohan Singh, in a letter to NG Jayasimha, Managing Director of Humane Society International, a Secunderabad-based NGO, had said that he was for banning the bull fight.

Former Union Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh had welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to ban Jallikattu. In fact, it was during his stint as the Environment Minister that he banned Jallikattu by adding bull to the list of animals prohibited for ‘performance’.

Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor back in 2015 called Jallikattu as cruel.

This has now triggered the hashtag #GoBackRahul with Congress critics calling out the party’s flip-flopping stance on Jallikattu.

Chennai: Kids from city win accolades for their civic responsibility

Devayani, 11, and Vignesh, 8, are the children of Ashok Kumar and Krishnaveni from Mudichur. They have been awarded and appreciated by the Deputy General of Police (DGP) Sylendra Babu IPS, for being socially responsible citizens at their age.

During the torrential rains that hit the city this month, the roads became inundated with water. The drainage canal by the road was left open, and there was a great risk of people falling into it, as the current was very strong. The two kids who were returning back home from shopping noticed that everyone was taking a detour around a drainage canal that way lying open.

They then picked up an iron barricade over it so as to prevent any kind of accident from happening. While Devyani closed the lid of the manhole, Vignesh held up the umbrella to protect his sister from the downpour.

“People are vehemently against the DMK”: Minister Ma Foi K Pandiarajan

Minister Ma Foi K. Pandiarajan has said that the general public of Tamil Nadu is rejecting DMK leader MK Stalin, Kanimozhi and Udayanithi, who have been doing widespread propaganda under the banner ‘We reject ADMK’.

Speaking to reporters after attending an event in Tiruvallur, the Minister said “Everywhere you look today, a tide of affection towards the ADMK is flowing at all the places where we have been campaigning so far. The contrary has been true for the leader of the opposition who has constantly been chased away by the public as a result of his wrongdoings. Despite all this, it is funny that Stalin has the nerve to say that he boycotts the ADMK, and go about with his shenanigans of spreading false information about our party.”

He continued, and said, “People are very angry watching Udayanidhi campaign and his derogatory speeches are getting on everyone’s nerves. As a result, many DMK workers have drawn public outrage. In one more month, AIADMK will have the biggest impact in Tamil Nadu. There is no doubt that ADMK is in the race for a landslide victory.”

TN Congress caught red-handed, fudges 2016 manifesto to whitewash stance on Jallikattu

In an appallingly dishonest move, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has been caught red-handed fudging its 2016 Assembly election manifesto to whitewash its stance on Jallikattu, the ancient bull taming sport held on the occasion of Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

The TNCC has been making arrangements for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Madurai reportedly to witness Jallikattu. This had led to many questioning the Congress leader’s visit as the party was instrumental in bringing the ban on the sport that is seen as a symbol of Tamil culture and heritage. Many had pointed out that the Congress in its 2016 Assembly election manifesto had declared to ban Jallikattu. But, there have been disputing references regarding this.

A Time of India report dated April 27, 2016 states that the party had called for a ban on Jallikattu in its 2016 election manifesto. Zee News too reported on the same date quoting ANI that the party promised to completely ban Jallikattu if it comes to power.

India Today too reported that the Congress in its manifesto has  ‘promised prohibition on Jallikattu’.

Another Times of India report dated January 19, 2017 and headlined “Congress flip-flops on jallikattu, now says it is against ban” notes that the party had changed its stance in the light of the pro-Jallikattu protests that took the state by storm.

However only The News Minute on April 27, 2016 seems to have reported differently stating that the party promised to ‘legalize’ Jallikattu.

On digging further, it was found that the original version of 2016 manifesto had no mention of Jallikattu or condemning the ban on the ancient sport.

Image

But the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Tuesday (January 12, 2021) had tweeted a picture of the same page of the manifesto that had a line which was not present in the earlier version.

The official handle of TNCC in response to BJP Tamil Nadu spokesperson SG Suryah’s tweet who had called out the Congress’ stance on Jallikattu, tweeted a picture of page number 72 of the manifesto that had two lines about Jallikattu.

The highlighted portion reads as: “Serious efforts will be taken to conduct Jalllikattu sport that was banned by the BJP government”.

This statement was not present in the version of the manifesto that was accessed from internet archives.

It seems that the Congress has fudged its 2016 election manifesto and uploaded in its website as a coverup job.

The stance of many of the Congress leaders on Jallikattu has been quite the contrary of what the party is claiming now.

Former Congress Minister Jayanthi Natarajan too speaking to a Tamil TV channel conceded that Congress was responsible for Jallikattu ban.

After promising to ban jallikattu in 2016, Congress now arranges for Rahul Gandhi to attend a jallikattu event in Madurai

“Rahul Gandhi will participate in the jallikattu event at Avaniapuram on January 14. The bull is very closely connected to the farming community, and our leader’s presence at a bull-taming sport will come as a moral support to lakhs of farmers who are on the streets protesting against the Centre’s farm bills,” Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K S Alagiri said on January 12.

Rahul Gandhi will arrive at the Madurai Airport at around 10.30 am and drive straight to Avaniapuram, which is just 9 km away from Madurai, to watch the bull-taming sport. After spending about four hours in Madurai, he will head back to Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s attendance at the jallikattu event will mark the beginning of the Rahulin Tamil Vanakkam (Rahul’s Tamil Welcome) campaign of the Tamil Nadu Congress. It is likely that he will visit various parts of Tamil Nadu in the run up to the assembly elections and address a rally in the Western part of the state in the next few weeks.

Jallikattu is an ancient traditional bull-taming sport conducted as part of Pongal festivities in various parts of Tamil Nadu. The sport dates as far back as the famed Sangam period. The events at Avaniapuram, Alanganallur, and Palamedu – all close to Madurai – have, in the past few decades, attained popularity across the globe. The sport was banned by the Supreme Court in 2014. Massive protests against the ban were held in Tamil Nadu in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, the then Tamil Nadu governor lifted the ban via ordinance and the Tamil Nadu legislature passed a bill, which effectively lifted the ban and allowed for the continuing of jallikattu events.

Interestingly, the Congress, in its 2016 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections manifesto, had promised to ban the sport. This was pointed out by Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson SG Suryah on social media platform Twitter. He also shared the relevant page of the Congress manifesto in another tweet.

PM Fasal Bima Yojana completes 5 years: 5.5 crore farmers covered, ₹90,000 crores disbursed

5 years ago, on 13th January 2016, the Government of India took a historic step towards strengthening risk coverage of crops for farmers of India and approved the flagship crop insurance scheme – the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). The scheme was conceived as a milestone initiative to provide a comprehensive risk solution at the lowest uniform premium across the country for farmers. The Government of India is committed towards protecting the interests of the farmers.

Premium cost over and above the farmer share is equally subsidized by States and GoI. However, GoI shares 90% of the premium subsidy for North Eastern States to promote the uptake in the region.

The average sum insured per hectare has increased from ₹15,100 during the pre-PMFBY Schemes to ₹40,700 under PMFBY.

As an end to end risk mitigation mechanism for farmers, the scheme extends coverage for the entire cropping cycle from pre-sowing to post-harvest including coverage for losses arising out of prevented sowing and mid-season adversities. Individual farm level losses arising out of localized calamities and post-harvest losses are also covered due to perils such as inundation, cloudburst and natural fire.

Some notable examples of these covers include prevented sowing claims over ₹500 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka during the Kharif 2019 dry spell, localized calamity claims of over ₹100 crore in Haryana during Kharif 2018 hailstorm, mid-season adversity claims of nearly ₹30 crore in Rajasthan during Rabi 2019-20 locust attack, and claims to the tune of ₹5000 crore in Maharashtra during the Kharif 2019 unseasonal rainfall.

Integration of land records with the PMFBY portal, Crop Insurance mobile-app for easy enrollment of farmers and usage of technology such as satellite imagery, remote-sensing technology, drones, artificial intelligence and machine learning to assess crop losses are some of the key features of the scheme. The scheme makes it easier for the farmer to report crop loss within 72 hours of occurrence of any event through the Crop Insurance App, CSC Centre or the nearest agriculture officer.

As an endeavor to constantly bring about improvements, the scheme was made voluntary for all farmers, post its revamp in February 2020. Further the States have also been provided flexibility to rationalize the sum insured so that adequate benefit can be availed by farmers.

The Scheme covers over 5.5 crore farmer applications year on year. Till date, claims worth ₹90,000 crores have already been paid out under the Scheme. Aadhar seeding has helped in speedy claim settlement directly into the farmer accounts. Even during COVID lock down period nearly 70 lakh farmers benefitted and claims worth ₹8741.30 crores were transferred to the beneficiaries.

The Government of India urges farmers to take advantage of the scheme by associating themselves to become self-sufficient in times of crisis and support the creation of an Aatmanirbhar Kisan.

Ultra-high mobility electron gas can increase information transfer speed & data storage density in quantum devices

Scientists have produced electron gas with ultra-high mobility, which can speed up transfer of quantum information and signal from one part of a device to another and increase data storage and memory.

The need for attaining new functionalities in modern electronic devices has led to the manipulation of property of an electron called spin degree of freedom along with its charge. This has given rise to an altogether new field of spin-electronics or ‘spintronics’. It has been realized that a phenomenon called the ‘Rashba effect’, which consists of splitting of spin-bands in an electronic system, might play a key role in spintronic devices.

Scientists at Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali (Punjab), an autonomous institution of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, have produced an ultra-high mobility 2d-electron gas(2DEG) at the interface of two insulating oxide layers.

Due to the high mobility of the electron gas, electrons do not collide inside the medium for a long distance and hence do not lose the memory and informationHence, such a system can easily remember and transfer its memory for a long time and distance. In addition, since they collide less during their flow, their resistance is very low, and hence they don’t dissipate energy as heat. So, such devices do not heat up easily and need less input energy to operate.

Aided by a grant from the DST-Nanomission in the form of a sophisticated, custom-made instrument called a combinatorial pulsed laser deposition setup, Dr.SuvankarChakraverty Associate Professor at Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali (Punjab), have produced 2DEG with ultra mobility at the novel interface composed of chemicals EuO and KTaO3. The strong spin-orbit coupling and relativistic nature of the electrons in the 2DEG resulted in the ‘Rashba field’. The research was published in the journal ‘Advanced Quantum Technologies’.

According to the INST team, realization of large Rashba-effect at such oxide interfaces containing highly mobile electron gas may open up a new field of device physics, especially in the field of quantum technology applicable for next-generation data storage media and quantum computers.

‘I did it for the nudes’, says Rajasthan man who shared sensitive military info with ISI

A 42-year-old man from Rajasthan who was arrested by police on Sunday has revealed that he passed on information about the Indian Army’s movements to a female agent of the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in exchange for her naked photos.

Satyanarayan Paliwal, who hails from Lathi village in Jaisalmer, is now in custody under the Official Secrets Act on charges of spying, according to officials. Caught spying for Pakistan, Paliwal said that women who came into contact with him on behalf of the ISI, would often share naked photos in exchange for more information about the Army’s movement in border areas and the Pokhran firing range.

Paliwal is the husband of a former sarpanch from Lathi village in Jaisalmer district. Paliwal told officials that since his wife was the sarpanch, he had access to the army’s activities. If an army exercise or movement was taking place, the concerned gram panchayat would have information on it, as the Army alerts surrounding villages to prevent any mishaps.

The ISI agent, who contacted Paliwal a couple of years ago on social media, posed as an Indian journalist and became very friendly with Paliwal. The two regularly chatted. Later, she started making video calls using a fake Indian number. After winning his confidence, she asked Paliwal to collect information about the army’s movements in Pokhran. Intelligence agencies got wind of the honey-trap and put him under surveillance. Intelligence agencies believe that he was in contact with the ISI for a long time.

The intelligence branch had been keeping a watch over Paliwal since one month after getting information regarding  his spying. After his confession, he was brought to Jaipur on Sunday and a case was registered against him under the Official Secrets Act, 1923.

Many documents on the Indian Army were found in his mobile, according to officials. Police said that a further probe is underway to determine if anyone else was involved.

PM Modi sends out strong message against political dynasts, urges youth to contribute selflessly and constructively in politics

Speaking at the valedictory function of the second National Youth Parliament Festival today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the youth of the country to contribute selflessly and constructively in politics.

The Prime Minister remarked that politics is a big medium to bring about meaningful change and like every other field, presence of youth is critical in politics also. Prime Minister assured the youth that today, honest people are getting the opportunity to serve, changing the old notion of politics as a site of unscrupulous activities. “Today honesty and performance have become the need of the hour.”, he said.

In this context, the Prime Minister dwelled at length on the politics of dynasty. He said corruption has become a burden on the people whose legacy was corruption. “Country is preferring honesty over family connections and candidates are also understanding that only the good work matters.”, the Prime Minister said.

He called upon the youth to root out dynastic system. “Dynasty politics gives rise to incapability and dictatorship in a democratic setup as these dynasts work towards saving the politics of their family and the family in politics.”, PM Modi said.

“Today, days of winning election by the crutches of a surname are over still this malaise of dynastic politics is far from over…Political dynasty promotes self and family instead of pushing nation first. This is a major cause of social corruption in India”, the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister exhorted the youth to come into politics as their entry will ensure the end of dynasty politics. “It is imperative for saving our democracy that you join politics. You have a great guide in Swami Vivekananda and if, with his inspiration, our youth joins politics, country will be strengthened”, PM Modi said.
