Indian Army signs MoU with SIDM on indigenisation and innovation partnership

The Indian Army and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) signed an MoU on 21 January to provide further impetus to indigenisation under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision and to achieve strategic independence by reducing dependence on foreign origin equipment. The MoU also marks twenty five years of army-industry partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). While army-industry collaboration started in 1995 with the indigenisation of spares, it has now progressed to major defence platforms and a wide range of weapons and equipment.

Increasing security challenges due to India’s rising stature in the international community, unresolved borders and revisionist adversaries require continuous and concerted capability-building of the Army through modernisation. The Army seeks to do this by equipping itself with indigenously built equipment. In order to optimise capability-building and contact with the industry, Indian Army has reorganised itself by aligning both the revenue and capital routes of procurement under the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance). Army Design Bureau (ADB) has been established to act as a direct facilitator with the industry and thereby connect the defence manufacturers directly with the user. These changes have resulted in collaborative engagements between the technology provider, the equipment manufacturer and the user.

Speaking at the seminar, the Army Chief said “India is now a rising regional global power in Asia, more particularly in South Asia. As we rise in our stature and influence, we will face increasingly higher security challenges.”

The Government has also brought in the necessary policy changes to support indigenisation and achieve self-reliance in the defence sector. Industry associations have provided a common platform for industry leaders to interact with the Indian Army to showcase their expertise. The inputs of the defence industry go a long way in effecting policy modulation and changes.

Mangaluru: Offensive messages and condoms found in temple hundis once again

As Hindu temples continue to be vandalised and damaged by unidentified miscreants across the country, another disgusting incident has come to light from this coastal city of Karnataka.

Posters with the defaced faces of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, BY Vijayendra and several other BJP leaders were found in the hundis of the Koragajja and Guligajja shrine in Ullal, Mangaluru. A cross was also drawn on the poster. Condoms were found in the hundi as well.

The posters also had hateful messages written on them. “Beware! Traitorous angels banished from Heaven have become fake gods and are corrupting the humans on Earth through idols”, “Politicians who loot people are like blood sucking mosquitoes, and they should be beaten up and killed”, “People should be prepared”, were some of these messages written on the poster.

The incident came into light when the hundi was opened on January 19 by the Koragajja Seva Samithi.

Earlier this month, used condoms and fake currency notes with hateful scribbles had been found in hundis in three other temples in the city. All these incidents have been reported from temples where there are no CCTV cameras.

Police officials visited the shrine and took cognisance of the situation.

Watch how Christian nuns spread canards against Farmer Empowerment Laws

Ever since the Parliament passed the three farmer empowerment laws in September 2020, the opposition parties in Tamil Nadu especially the DMK and its allies like the VCK and Communist parties have been protesting against the laws that seeks to empower farmers by providing them with better choices to sell their produce.

Along with them several Christian and Muslim fundamentalist groups have also begun their propaganda against the laws saying that it is anti-farmer.

In this light, a video doing the rounds in social media shows Christian nuns from Kanyakumari staging a drama in which they peddle fake rhetoric and information against the laws.

In the video shared by one Arul Doss Borntowin, the nuns from Kalkurichy Church raise slogans like “We don’t want the farm laws!” followed by a rant against ‘corporates’. As usual, the nuns also vent their angst against Prime Minister Narendra Modi too.

UK govt cannot extradite Vijay Mallya due to a “confidential legal issue”, Centre informs SC

The Centre on January 18 informed the Supreme Court that the United Kingdom has communicated to India that the fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya could not be extradited until a “confidential legal issue” concerning him was resolved.

The Ministry of External Affairs’ letter to the Supreme Court was read out by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta before a Special Bench led by Justice U.U. Lalit. The letter, quoting excerpts from the U.K. government’s communication to the Indian government, mentioned that there was a pending “further legal issue” before the UK could extradite Vijay Mallya to India.

Although the UK side has assured India that it was “seeking to deal with the issue as quickly as possible” as they know how important the extradition is to the Indian government, there were no details on what the “issue” is or how long it would take to resolve the issue. The UK has refused to elaborate on this, saying that it was judicial in nature.

Mr. Mehta reiterated that the government has been making frequent and repeated efforts to extradite “The King of Good Times” from the UK.

The letter itself related how the Foreign Secretary had raised the issue of Mr. Mallya’s extradition with the UK Home Secretary in November. The Foreign Minister had done so with the U.K. Foreign Secretary in December. This was followed by the Home Secretary raising it with the UK Permanent Under Secretary of Home in January 2021.

Pastor poisons his counterpart over mishandling of FCRA funds

Many of the Catholic Churches run ‘charity’ organizations on their own, and also run some FCRA organizations that operate under the direct control of the Church. The Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) has been publishing evidence that foreign funds obtained through these organizations are being used for illegal activities, including religious conversion.

The LRO has found that the Hazaribagh Catholic Church in Jharkhand received ₹ 10.95 crores from the FCRA and used it to stage a protest demanding the release of Urban Naxal priest Stan Swamy, who was arrested for proselytizing. The LRO also alleges that church priests encouraged proselytizing tribesmen to conceal their conversions and obtain false credentials as ‘Hindus’ in order to obtain government benefits.

The Bhopal Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh has also been accused of violating FCRA rules. The Pastoral Care of Nomads in India was founded by the Vatican for the priests who travelled and ministered with the nomads. It also appears to be receiving funding through the FCRA in the name of this organization.

It is learned that the Bhopal Church used the funds to convert the Bhil tribe. There has been a lot of financial abuse going on in this church. Pastor Anand Muttungal, a spokesman for the presidency, also accused Archbishops Cornelio and Pascal Dapno of violating church rules.

He had apparently revealed some of the irregularities perpetrated by the two Arcbishops to the congregation, including the vicar appointed by the two, and told them about the crimes they were committing. Anand Muttungal accused Archbishops Cornelio and Pascal of plotting against him, and soon he was arrested and jailed for 50 days on charges that included forgery and forging documents.

It is noteworthy that no one from the church had come to his aid. He went to the Madhya Pradesh High Court without getting a bail in the lower court and was later released on bail of ₹ 50,000. He also complained to the police that he was being poisoned because he had exposed the archbishops about the fraud.

The court issued arrest warrants against three members of the church, including the archbishops, following a petition filed in court by the police investigating the complaint. But Archbishop Cornelio was granted bail and the church acted in his favour. He was finally expelled from the church on the basis of a complaint sent to the Pope by Pastor Anand Muttungal alleging that he had acted against the church.

The LRO has written to the Union Home Ministry with appropriate evidence pointing out these irregularities and frauds. The LRO has demanded that the financial statements of the Bhopal and Hazaribagh churches be examined and that the FCRA investigate the irregularities and revoke the license.

“Stalin and his son are nothing but half-baked politicians”: Minister Jayakumar

Minister D. Jayakumar said that Stalin would hardly get his deposit back if he contested at Royapuram, which happens to be Jayakumar’s constituency. He went on to issue an open challenge to the DMK chief and said that it was his greatest desire that Stalin should contest in his constituency and taunted him saying that he didn’t have the guts to stand against him in the upcoming elections.

He also said that all that the DMK had ever done while in power was to amass wealth for their family’s benefit for 17 years and that the DMK was in exploiting the rights of the people and harming Tamil Nadu. He mentioned that the DMK was only talking about farmers for the sake of elections.

He then went on to clarify Gokula Indira’s recent comments. He said it was unacceptable for anyone to denigrate women and said that she did not comment on the political entry of women in any way. He added that Sasikala’s release would have no impact on the AIADMK and its outcomes in the upcoming elections.

Minister Jayakumar also slammed Stalin and his son Udhayanidhi for speaking ill of women and called them ‘nothing more than half-baked politicians’. Criticizing the DMK by calling it to be as corrupt as a sewer, he said that the AIADMK was to Tamil Nadu as to how the rivers like Ganges were to the country, and that river continues to move on, not stopping for anyone.

China imposes sanctions on former US State Secretary Pompeo, Steve Bannon and others for “anti-China” activities

In the wake of the Presidential inauguration of Joe Biden, China has imposed sanctions on 28 US individuals, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials of the Trump administration.

Chinese state-sponsored media reported on January 20 that over the past few years, some “anti-China politicians” in the United States had “planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China’s internal affairs, undermined China’s interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-U.S. relations”.

The Chinese government, in order “to defend China’s national sovereignty, security and development interests”, has decided to enforce sanctions on “28 persons who have seriously violated China’s sovereignty and who have been mainly responsible for such U.S. moves on China-related issues”.

These individuals include former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Assistant to the President, Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy Peter Navarro, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs Robert C. O’Brien, former US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar II, former investment  banker and political strategist Stephen Bannon and several others.

Mike Pompeo had, in his last week in office, started a new foreign policy line regarding US-Taiwan relations, had further burdened China with increased sanctions and officially termed the Chinese treatment of its minority Uyghur population a “genocide”.

“These individuals and their immediate family members are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China. They and companies and institutions associated with them are also restricted from doing business with China”, Chinese state-run media said.

A complaint has been lodged with the police against actor Vimal and his family for demolishing the Karuppasamy temple in Manapparai. Actor Vimal, who became famous for his role in the film Kalavani, hails from Pannangombai village near Manapparai. He owns an ancestral land and house in this village. A temple dedicated to the Karuppasamy deity had been present on a piece of land frequented by the villagers and other people from the nearby region.

The people of the area had been worshipping Karuppasamy by lighting lamps on the ledge next to the temple. In the last few days, the people of the village had erected another small pillar near the region where the lamps had been lit. A mob of 7 people, including actor Vimal, who did not like this is said to have demolished the Karuppasamy Temple and the lamps with a JCB equipment overnight.

According to locals, on the 13th of January, actor Vimal and his family took away items from the temple, including a vel, which was kept in the temple. Police have registered a case and are investigating following a public complaint.

This is not the first time that actor Vimal finds himself in a controversy. Earlier, a complaint was filed against the actor for assaulting another actor.
