‘BJP will win West Bengal election’, Prashant Kishore in a leaked audio

“The BJP will win in West Bengal,” Prashant Kishore, the Trinamool Congress party’s election strategist, said in a leaked audio clip. This has sparked controversy in the political arena.

In West Bengal, assembly elections are being held in eight phases for a total of 294 constituencies. The ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have a bitter rivalry. The Prashant Kishore-led ‘IPAC’ is devising electoral tactics for the Trinamool Congress in an atmosphere where both parties are vying for power. Prashant Kishore had previously stated that the BJP would struggle to win double digit seats and that if the party would win, he would quit Twitter.

In this background, senior leader Amit Malviya released an audio clip in which Prashant Kishore is quoted as saying, “BJP will win in West Bengal.”

Mamata seeks minority support, Amit Shah tells others to think

“Mamata expects minority support. She didn’t look for support from others. They’ll make a decision right now, ” Home Minister Amit Shah said.

Elections are being held in 8 phases for 294 constituencies in the West Bengal Assembly. Muslims have more than 31 percent of the vote share in West Bengal. This is the key factor behind the Left Front’s 34-year rule and Mamata’s victory in 2011. This time as well, their votes will play a role in determining the regime. Any division that occurs in the Muslim vote bank will affect 90 constituencies. This is the problem for West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Abbas Siddiqui’s secular front, which has allied with the Left and the Congress, is likely to divide Muslim votes, which is disastrous for Mamata. This could help the BJP gain ground in the polls. As a result, Mamata Banerjee has lobbied for Muslims to vote for her party.

Amit Shah, speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, said: “Mamata’s request for minority support reveals that she lacks the required strength. She is concerned that the TMC will lose this election. She must be certain that others would notice her request for minority support. She did not seek the support of others. Now they have to make a decision.” He added that the BJP would win 63-68 seats in the first three phases of the elections that ended in 91 constituencies going to polls.

Four dead in Cooch Behar as Mamata instigates supporters to attack Central Forces

Mamata Banerjee CRPF Cooch Behar

As voters in West Bengal cast their votes in the fourth phase of the assembly election on Saturday (10 April), four people were killed and four others were injured in firing by security forces in Cooch Behar. The security forces opened fire as they were ‘gheraoed’ (surrounded) and attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters .

Just before the start of the fourth phase of the assembly election Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked her supporters to gherao central security forces. The Election Commission had earlier issued notice to Mamata Banerjee on Friday to explain her remarks alleging that the central security forces were supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that she had made in a public rally in Cooch Behar.

The EC in its notice said, “Ms Banerjee is not realising that this kind of statement can create a wedge of distrust between the state police of West Bengal, who are also doing their own duty with the central forces, instead of complementing each other… Far more discouraging is the fact that Ms Banerjee has been trying to make an emotional pitch for the women voters to go to the extent of inciting them to attack the person of central police forces.”

As per reports, around 300 people gheraoed the security forces and attempted to snatch their rifles. The mob also attacked the polling staff. The Trinamool Congress has alleged that the people killed were TMC voters.

Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, tweeted, “Heart wrenching reports of 5 innocent people shot dead by Central Forces coming in from Cooch Behar,”. He, however, conveniently forgot that it was his aunt who had asked her supporters to attack the Central Forces in the first place.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pranab Roy said Mamata Banerjee should be blamed for such unfortunate incidents as she had herself instigated people against the central forces.

An official from the EC said that “re-polling will be held in booth no 126/5 in Sitalkuchi area” of the district, in view of the unfortunate incident. A total of 44 seats are up for grab in this phase as the spectre of more violence grows in West Bengal.

‘Annadurai first proposed hydrocarbon extraction in Cauvery Delta’, Karunanidhi’s old video emerges

A two-minute video clip of late DMK President Karunanidhi endorsing for hydrocarbon exploration in the Cauvery delta region has gone viral on social media.

The two-minute video was part of his speech at the silver jubilee function for the Puthu Puthu Arthangal movie. “Nannilam in the Cauvery delta region is bringing great fortunes to Tamil Nadu by supporting large oil extracting wells,” he says in the video. He also mentioned how late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Annadurai’s first proposal about the presence of oil in the Cauvery delta was mocked and later accepted by those who mocked them. He also stated that oil-related industries will be established in Nannilam in the future.

Netizens mocked DMK for having a double standard when it came to oil extraction.  The DMK had previously vowed to shut down all oil wells in the Cauvery Delta area, if elected. It is also noteworthy to mention that it was the present DMK chief MK Stalin who had given approval for the hydrocarbon project at Neduvasal.

With the video exposing DMK for bringing oil extraction to the Cauvery delta, their poll promise have now come into question.

Edappadiyaar, the formidable force that everyone underestimated

eps aiadmk

When Edappadi K. Palaniswami took over as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in February 2017, he was written off as a nondescript leader. Someone temporary. Many predicted that the government would fall within a year and an election was round the corner that would bring the DMK to power with Stalin as the CM. Five years down the line, both the party and government has consolidated itself and has emerged stronger under a leader who has established himself as a doer.

What has amazed his opponents as well as the general public is the extraordinary work done by him during this elections. He has broken all the barriers against him branding himself as a force to be reckoned with. He transitioned from being known as Edappadi K. Palaniswami, just another MLA in Jayalalithaa’s regime to ‘Edappadiyaar’ a mass leader and a tough rival to the DMK chief MK Stalin, credits to his astute political acumen and deft handling of political crises.

CM Palaniswami stands majestically in the field today, despite many weaknesses that have been coming from the all direction such as the ‘negative votes’ on BJP, 10 year anti incumbency of ADMK, 7 years anti incumbency of BJP government at centre, negative pre poll survey results etc”.

Karunanidhi, who had 80 years of public life, was frustrated that Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) did not join their alliance in 2016, thanks to the miscalculation done by MK Stalin costing the DMK another 5 years. His campaigns sounded like the DMK was admitting defeat even before elections. The DMDK went on to form the People Welfare Alliance comprising themselves, Thirumavalavan’s VCK, Vaiko’s MDMK and 2 communist parties.  Noting this, Jayalalithaa said, “All the votes you cast for other parties will be wasted. So, vote for us who will win.”

But in this election, EPS/Edappadiyaar was the only star campaigner in the AIADMK to go to all the districts and campaign. His campaign vehicle has tirelessly circled almost all the 234 constituencies. In many places he campaigned in the scorching sun and spoke for at least 20 minutes at each location, touching on local issues.

Campaigning in Madurai East, he said, “Do you want an MLA who comes looking for a house and resolves your grievances? Or do you want an MLA who infiltrates your house and attacks you? You know what kind of DMK candidate is contesting here,” the Chief Minister said. He also recalled incidents such as power outages, land grabbing and attacks on businesses during the DMK regime. “If you want to work peacefully in your business place without the fear of rowdies and goondas, do not vote for the DMK,” he said.

While campaigning in Theni district for Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, took OPS in his van but did not allow him to speak during canvassing, while three other candidates from the district were made to stand in a separate van.

DMK leader Stalin held only one campaign rally in each district. In Jayalalithaa style, he brought all the candidates there and campaigned for them. But the fact that Palaniswami went to every constituency and canvassed is new to the AIADMK. While Kamal Haasan, Harinadar, etc. were all flying in the helicopter, EPS took to the road connecting with the people.

For EPS, this election is a life or death battle for his political future. If the AIADMK loses, some of the Ministers could face corruption charges. The AIADMK might once again face crisis and seek refuge under Sasikala.

When inquired about the work of EPS in the Kongu region, sources said, “His work is not ordinary. But there is another reason for that effort. One of the Gounder lobbies runs behind him. We do not know how many years we will have to wait for this regime (Gounder led government) to come once again in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, they are leaving no stone unturned and are working as hard as they can to retain this power.”.

If the AIADMK under the banner of EPS, history would be made. He would stand here as a different personality, with the identity of the leader who has overthrown the maximum number of political opponents ‘inside and outside’. Edappadiyaar would scale even further heights and establish himself as the true face of AIADMK.

May 2 will tell us what is in store for this underrated politician!

Andhra CM Jagan’s sister YS Sharmila to launch party in Telangana

YS Sharmila

YS Sharmila, sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, on Friday said she would launch her political party in Telangana.

Addressing a public meeting in Khammam, about 200 KM from Hyderabad, Sharmila said more details like the outfit’s name and agenda would be announced on July 8.

She also said she would undertake a hunger strike in Hyderabad for three days from April 15 if notification for government jobs is not issued by the administration. The relay hunger strike would continue in every district by her party’s cadre and leaders until the demand is met, she further said.

YS Sharmila said that there is a necessity to float a political party to question the alleged corruption in the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led government in Telangana. Her party is very much needed to question the KCR government on anti-people policies, she claimed.

“Though Telangana was formed seven years ago, peoples ambitions were not fulfilled,” she added.

Sharmila’s father late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, widely known as YSR, was the Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009 until he died in a chopper crash which took place in September 2009. Her brother Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Reddy is alleged to be responsible for the state-sponsored Christianization of the southern state.

Stalin questions DMK office bearers about low turnout in key constituencies, to act on dissidents after results

DMK President Stalin in a meeting yesterday with candidates and district secretaries reportedly questioned some of the candidates concerned about the low turnout in their constituencies.

The DMK’s sitting MLAs’ constituencies had the lowest voter turnout in the 2021 assembly election, while the constituencies where incumbent Ministers contested had some of the highest turnout. In particular, the low turnout in Chennai has come as a shock to the DMK leadership.

The IPAC team predicted that the party will win a majority of seats and come to power. However, the low turnout has raised various doubts with the DMK leadership. In this context, Stalin addressed some DMK candidates from Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Thiruvannamalai districts at the Chennai Arivalayam yesterday. He asked them the reasons for the low turnout.

Stalin also gathered information on rebels who operated against the party after being denied assembly election tickets. After the polls, Stalin intends to take action against the dissidents.
