Meet Shyam Baba, the prisoner who is involved in cremating COVID victims

A prisoner from the state of Madhya Pradesh has been released on bail and is helping in burying COVID victims. Shyam Baba, originally from Madhya Pradesh, was convicted of murder in 2009 and was recently released from prison on bail.

Shyam Baba, who saw the daily death toll from the coronavirus as he was released, began to assist in burying the bodies in a local cemetery in Thar district, 60 km from Indore. Shyam Baba volunteered to perform the funeral rites for the corpses of the corona victims as the family was reluctant to perform the funeral rites due to the risk of infection as it was necessary to follow some strict procedures to carry out the last rites of the corona victims.

Shyam Baba, who currently spends most of his time in the cemetery, is involved in unloading bodies from ambulances, stacking bodies and performing funeral rites for bodies as and when required. The prison administration, which saw Shyam Baba’s commitment during the pandemic, has ordered his bail to be extended for another two months at his request.

However, he said he was concerned about such deaths and prayed to God that a pandemic like this should not happen again soon. Hemendra Singh Banwar, a social activist, praised Shyam Baba for coming out of jail on parole and engaging in such social service during the Corona outbreak last year.

Jharkhand CM tweets about his conversation with PM, stirs row

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren took to Twitter and took jibe at Prime Minister Modi on Thursday saying that the PM shared his ‘mann ki baat’. He went on to say that the Prime Minister did not listen to his point of view on the pandemic and went on to accuse him of not prioritising the welfare of the country. This blew up overnight and resulted in triggering a lot of hate tweets against the Prime Minister.

Commenting on this and retweeting it on her handle, Times Now’s Navika Kumar came to the Prime Minister’s defence. She accused the Jharkhand CM of taking potshots at the Prime Minister to gain publicity.

Her tweet read, “Has it really come to this now? In a pandemic when PM @narendramodi calls up a CM to enquire about the COVID situation in the state this is what a CM says? Is propriety dead? Is respect/courtesy extinct? Petty posturing more imp than human lives? PM abused for helping? Shocking.” News18’s Amish Devgan also took Navika’s side and commented that politics had stooped to a new low.

Earlier, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal came under criticism after violating official protocol. He had live broadcasted the meeting that the PM had held with the Chief Ministers of all the states.

China reinforcing its military positions in Eastern Ladakh as summer approaches

As summer approaches, China which had disengaged and had promised de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh is now reinforcing its military positions and rotating troops in that area.

In 2020, after China made a significant incursion along the LAC, India both countries were locked in a stand-off for over a year now.

After it emerged that the soldiers of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is facing problems in this high altitude zone, China asked India for a mutual de-escalation as the harsh winter was approaching.

However, now that summer has approached the Chinese are converting temporary structures to support helicopter landings and surface-to-air missile positions into permanent positions.

As per observations made by India at the LAC China continues to maintain a big force and has witnessed plenty of activity in the past couple of days as the PLA can move forces must faster to the LAC due to better road connectivity and associated infrastructures supporting its logistics.

Talks after talks between senior military commanders have failed as the Chinese side did not agree to pull back troops at patrolling posts 15, 17 and 17A in the Hot Springs-Gogra-Kongka La areas.

A statement from India said that both sides agreed to resolve issues. “It was highlighted that completion of disengagement in other areas would pave the way for two sides to consider de-escalation forces and ensure full restoration of peace and tranquillity and enable progress in bilateral relations,” the statement read.

“The two sides agreed on the need to resolve the outstanding issues in an expeditious manner in accordance with the existing agreements and protocols,” a statement by the Defence Ministry read.

Also, in the video, Ibrahim is accompanied by his wife as both senior citizens are threatening to commit suicide if they don’t get justice. This has now led the police to book a case against the couple for threatening to commit suicide.

However, the woman in question who has been accused of having an affair with Irfan Patan had filed a case of dowry harassment against Syed Ibrahim and his son on 11 March 2021. This is being investigated by the police.

Ashwath Narayan

An SOS call made by the healthcare personnel of KC General Hospital in Bengaluru to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan has averted a major tragedy and saved 200 lives, that could have arisen due to possible oxygen shortage.

The hospital had placed an order for medical oxygen with the Proxy Air company, located at Bellary to boost its stock of oxygen supply. The company was supposed to deliver the order by 11 PM on Wednesday.

However, when the company’s oxygen tanker did not show up at the hospital even at 11.30 PM on Wednesday, the hospital staff called up the Proxy Air company, only to learn that the tanker had been sent to a private hospital instead.

With a few hours of oxygen supply left, the matter was brought to the attention of Dr. Renuka Prasad, in-charge of the oxygen management at the hospital. As many as 200 Covid-19 patients were being treated at the hospital. She made frantic calls to Proxy Air, but there was no response.

Finally, she called Deputy CM Dr. CN Ashwath Narayan, who wasted no time and arranged for oxygen supply with the Universal company. As the situation was grim and expediency was necessary, he contacted Malleshwaram police and arranged for the oxygen to be delivered in a zero traffic corridor.

The staff as well as the Deputy CM worked throughout the night to ensure that a tragedy did not occur.

“I worked in collaboration with the police to ensure the quick supply, while the hospital staff attended to the patients’, Ashwath Narayan said.

China’s second aircraft carrier Shandong takes part in first training for combat preparedness

China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has conducted a series of exercises with its second aircraft carrier, Shandong (Hull 17), in the South China Sea. Shandong is China’s first domestically-made aircraft carrier. The bulk of its first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, was bought from Ukraine.

China had officially commissioned its second aircraft carrier on December 17, 2019, making China one of the few countries to operate multiple carriers.

The exercises are to let the region know that two aircraft carriers are actively involved in training for combat preparedness said Senior Captain Gao Xiucheng, a spokesperson from the PLA Navy.

According to China, such drills are part of its annual work schedule, are fully legitimate and legal, and will contribute to boosting the naval service’s capability to safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, as well as regional peace and stability.

“We hope the outside world can view [the Shandong’s exercise] objectively and rationally. The PLA Navy will continue to organize similar exercises according to the plan regularly in the future,” Gao said.

This is the first time the Shandong has been part of a major naval exercise in 2021 after it entered service in December 2019 and underwent further trials and training sessions in 2020.

China’s other aircraft carrier Liaoning carrier group also recently conducted routine drills and training near the Taiwan Strait and in the South China Sea.

For a long time, China has been working on plans to build a strong blue-water navy like the Americans who have many battle groups of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. With two aircraft carriers fully operational, the PLAN can flex its muscle in South East Asia.

China is also actively building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The two carriers it has at its disposal is nothing but a platform to train for combat preparedness in the future and develop capabilities for long-distance and long deployment voyages.

“Water catchments in Hosur’s Reserve Forests to be immediately filled with water”: Forest Welfare Department

Due to the scorching summer, the forest department has issued a notice saying that it will be filling two tanks with a capacity of 1.5 lakh litres in the Sanamavu Reserve in the Hosur Forest Reserve, as the third phase to quench the thirst of the wildlife living in the sanctuary.

The Hosur Wildlife Sanctuary has 12 reserves including Sanamavu Reserve, Chettipalli Reserve, Kumbalam-1 Reserve, Kumbalam-2 Reserve, Kulu Reserve and Sanamavu Extension Reserve.

The first phase and second phases of the project were to fill water in two large tanks with a capacity of about 1.50 lakh litres set up on behalf of the forest department in the early stages to fulfill the drinking water needs of wildlife including elephant, leopard, wild boar, spotted deer and rabbit living in these reserves.

To combat the summer sun, the forest department has started filling the tanks with water to quench the thirst of the wild animals as the third phase of this operation.

Speaking on this occasion, Hosur Forest Ranger Ravi said, “Currently, the Hosur Forest Reserve is experiencing a drought due to heavy rains. The current summer rains are not enough to fill the water levels. As a third step, the forest department is filling 2 large tanks with a capacity of about 1.5 lakh litres in the Sanamavu reserve with water tankers to prevent wildlife from leaving the forest in search of water. To quench the thirst of the wildlife, the district forest department is taking steps to fill the tanks in all the reserves till the end of summer.”

DMK Govt set to scrap several key infrastructure projects instituted under NDA?

Just days after the victory of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu assembly elections, a section of ’eminent personalities’ and various organisations in the state have written to Chief Minister-designate M K Stalin requesting to withdraw the permission for the reopening of the Vedanta copper unit and to scrap the Chennai-Salem eight-lane expressway project.

These personalities include director Vetrimaran, actor Vijay Sethupathi, and former Madras High Court judge (retd) D Hariparanthaman, as reported by The Hindu. All of them have asked the DMK chief to cancel the Adani port expansion at Kattupalli, the Kanniyakumari International Container Terminal, and the Chittoor-Thachur 6-lane expressway.

“At a time when development needs a reorientation and the country requires strong environmental laws, the Union government is busy diluting the meagre protection offered by the laws, such as EIA notification and Coastal Regulation Zone notification,” they said.

Stalin in March 2019, had said that he would get rid of the proposed Salem-Chennai eight-lane expressway project if his party won in 2021 and instead focus on expanding the existing highway network. The 277-km Chennai-Salem Expressway which is being constructed at a cost of ₹7,500 crores will cut travelling time between the two cities by half.

Another important infrastructure project that the eminent personalities request to be scrapped is the newly declared National Highway Chittoor-Thatcher Road named NH 716B (160km). This project is important because once built it will facilitate access to the city and decongest Chennai roads and will also pass through industrially developed areas and will cost ₹4,000 crores.

Many analysts feel such decisions to cancel critical infrastructure projects by Stalin are to impose his will on his party and show the people of Tamil Nadu he is in charge. The highway project is part of the NDA government’s ambitious ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’ scheme.
