A month after the results of the West Bengal elections were declared in which the Trinamool Congress won, the violence against those who supported the Bhartia Janata Party (BJP) has only increased and one of the few persons who has been raising the voice against this violence is Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

On Sunday June 6, Dhankhar slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the ‘rampant post-poll violence’ in the state and directed the Chief Secretary to brief him about the law and order situation on Monday (June7).

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Dhankhar wrote, “Extremely alarming law & order scenario Mamata Banerjee. Security environment is seriously compromised. In such a grim situation called upon Chief Secretary to brief me on the law and order situation on Monday 7th June and indicate all steps taken to contain post poll violence.”

The West Bengal Governor said that the TMC is in the warpath of retributive violence post the election that has graduated to social boycott and denial of benefits. He said that people are made to suffer as they are being extorted for living in their own house or run their own business.

PLA had to rotate 90% of its troops from Eastern Ladakh due to extreme cold conditions

News has emerged that mighty China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had to rotate 90 per cent of its soldiers because they were badly affected by the extreme cold conditions and in Eastern Ladakh.

As per reports by ANI, the PLA was forced to bring fresh troops after many soldiers were badly affected by the extremely cold conditions in the area.

Since April-May 2020, China has deployed over 50,000 troops close to the Indian territory in eastern Ladakh and has managed to maintain the strength despite the limited troop’s withdrawal from front locations in the Pangong lake sector.

“The Chinese have brought in fresh troops from the hinterland to replace the troops who had been there for the last one year. Around 90 per cent of their troops have been rotated,” sources mentioned to reporters.

However, with the harsh cold conditions in the region and the high altitude, the PLA was forced to rotate its troops almost on a daily basis in the Pangong lake area last year leading to very limited movement.

The Indian Army which has a long history of maintaining a presence in high altitude area stations its troops for a two-year tenure and around 40-50 per cent of soldiers get rotated every year.

But the Indo-Tibetian Border Police (ITBP) which is a para-military force where most of the recruits are from that region sometimes stationed for more than two years.

India and China have deployed troops in eastern Ladakh and other areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since April-May last year and India surprised the Chinese when its troops seized the strategic heights at the lake’s southern bank in August last year, from where they dominated the Chinese.

DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, MLA Ezhilan distribute non-veg biryani outside Perumal Temple on Karunanidhi’s birth anniversary

Commemorating the occasion of late DMK patriarch Karunanidhi’s birthday, DMK cadres put up a stage right in front of the Perumal Temple in Chennai’s Royapettah area and distributed chicken and mutton biryani to people.

On June 3, the cadres of the DMK observed the 98th birth anniversary of their late leader Karunanidhi. Due to the spread of COVID and the restrictions put in place by the government, Chief Stalin MK Stalin had appealed to the party cadres to celebrate the occasion in their homes.

However, at the Srinivasa Perumal Temple located in 118 East Ward of the Thousand Light constituency, DMK cadres erected a stage with a backdrop covering the entrance of the temple and distributed chicken and mutton biryani. The backdrop placed just outside the temple had the images of Karunanidhi, MK Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin.

DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, MLA Ezhilan Naganathan, Regional Secretary of the party Anbudurai, General Committee Member VS Raj, Circle Secretary Yuvraj and many other executives participated in the biryani distribution event.

From the video evidence that has emerged it can be seen that those who came to get biryani, did not wear face masks or observe social distancing. The fact that non-vegetarian food was being provided in front of the Perumal temple has shocked the public living in the area. Hindu organizations have strongly condemned the incident.

“Getting removed from SC list will be our ultimate freedom”: Devendra Kula Vellalars storm Twitter

devendrakula vellalar puthiya tamilagam chief hindu nation

In a country where certain communities and political parties organize themselves and clamour for reservation in jobs and education, the Devendra Kula Vellalar community from Tamil Nadu have been demanding for decades to get themselves delisted from the Scheduled Caste.

The Devendra Kula Vellalars who identify themselves as a wetland farming community have been asking for regrouping of Pallar, Pannadi, Kudumbar, Kaaladi, Kadaiyar, Mooppar/Vadhiriyar and Devendrakulathar under one title –  ‘Devendra Kula Vellalar’ and also removal of the community from Scheduled Caste.

Parties like Puthiya Tamilagam headed by Dr. Krishnaswamy, a Devendra Kula Vellalar himself has been at the forefront fighting for the cause for several decades.

To add fuel to their campaign, the Devendra Kula Vellalars stormed Twitter on Sunday (June 6) with the hashtag #பட்டியல்_வெளியேற்றமே_விடுதலை (Getting removed from SC list will be our ultimate freedom).

The hashtag saw more than 1.5 lakh tweets (as of 06 30 PM) and was one of the top trends.

On December 4, 2020, the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that the State Government would be recommending to the Central Government to include the seven Scheduled Caste sub-sects — Pallar, Kudumbar, Kadaiyar, Pannadi, Kaaladi, Vadhiriyar, and Devendrakulathar  — in the Devendrakula Vellalar community. However, he said that the Devendra Kula Vellalars would continue to stay in Scheduled Caste list considering their current socio-economic status. Though Dr. Krishnasamy welcomed the announcement, he said that the ultimate aim was to get delisted from the Scheduled Caste.

Accordingly, The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was presented in the Lok Sabha to regroup the seven Scheduled Caste sub-castes — Pallar, Kudumbar, Kadaiyar, Pannadi, Kaaladi, Vadhiriyar, and Devendrakulathar — as ‘Devendrakula Vellalar’ community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had come to Chennai on February 14, 2021 had said that the long standing demand of the community has been fulfilled.

Earlier in January 2021, several thousand people belonging to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community took out a massive procession in Madurai headed by Dr. K. Krishnasamy, demanding to be delisted from the Scheduled Caste.

“I order you to convert 6 lakh Hindus to Christianity”: Pastor Mohan C Lazarus

A video of Pastor Mohan C Lazarus ordering missionaries to convert six lakh Hindus in Thiruchendur is now going viral on the internet. There has also been a constant cry by several organisations, demanding stricter legislative laws to prevent religious conversion.

Christian pastor Mohan C. Lazarus has been telling missionaries in many places that Hindus should be converted. He has been gathering people in the name of prayer meetings and forcing them to convert Hindus by misrepresenting Hinduism and telling them to convert to Christianity. Speaking at a recent ‘religious meeting’, he said, “There are 6 lakh Hindus here. You should convert at least one of them. I am not asking you to take to the streets and campaign. Befriend someone when you are travelling by train, at the bus stand or at work, and then proselytize them. Take an oath to the Lord that you will convert someone. Instead of doing this, you are only evangelizing those from your church and the ones near you. This is merely a lake; you have to go out and catch the fish in the sea. Go out and catch 6 lakh Hindus for conversion.”

He went on to say, “The relatives of the converts from the Hindus are not the ones that are to be engaged in the process of conversion. There are six lakh Hindus out there who are yet to be proselytised. You should talk to them about Jesus and his glory and convert them.”

This video of Mohan C Lazarus speaking out that everyone should make it their first duty to convert someone has gone viral on social media. Indu Makkal Katchi chief Arjun Sampath issued a statement condemning Mohan C Lazarus for his attempt to disturb communal harmony. He said that anti-conversion law was the need of the hour in Tamil Nadu.

Communist China failed to destroy Dalai Lama, haven’t learnt any lesson: Human Rights activists

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has failed to force Tibetans from following the Dalai Lama, even as Beijing deprives the Tibetans their legitimate civil and religious rights, according to human rights activists.

Communist China’s claim over Tibet is also based on historical lies, even though military power and authority have been used to clamp down on facts about occupied Tibet, even as Beijing continues to demonise the Dalai Lama through fake narratives, the activists said.

They were speaking at a webinar on “Communist China and its Failure to Destroy the Institution of the Dalai Lama: Lessons for the Future” organised by New Delhi-based think-tank Law and Society Alliance and geopolitical magazine Defence Capital.

Joining the event from Geneva in Switzerland, Ms Thinlay Chukki, a Special Appointee for Human Rights at the Tibet Bureau, said Tibet was militarily occupied by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949 as part of its expansionist agenda.

“Since then, China has constantly tried to destroy the institution of the Dalai Lama,” Chukki said.

The Dalai Lama has been the political ruler of Tibet at least since 1642, with nearly 500 years of a Tibetan government under the institution of the spiritual leader, she said.

“For China, usurping the powers of the Dalai Lama marks the first step towards consolidation of the CCP’s power. When His Holiness was forced into exile from Tibet, Mao Zedong lamented saying that China had lost the entirety of Tibet. Only if the Dalai Lama were in control of the Chinese, would their military conquest of Tibet gain some sort of legitimacy,” she said.

Chukki blamed present Chinese President Xi Jinping for projecting CCP’s ideological battle in Tibet as a national security concern for the PRC due to Tibetans’ unique culture, language, and identity.

She pointed out that in 1994, the United Nations compiled a special report after the visit of the special rapporteur on religion to China in which it was noted a consistent attack and persecution of Buddhists was in progress in Tibet.

“The Tibetan Buddhists are persecuted for even possessing a photograph of the Dalai Lama because the CCP feels that the spiritual leader, who embodies compassion, posed a greater threat to Beijing’s rule over Tibet, as the religious figure symbolizes a legitimate government of the Tibetans, even though in exile.”

She said the international community needs to keep an eye on Communist China’s actions. Because, this oppression was not just confined to Tibet, under the CCP rule, as a recent report by Freedom House stated.

“By taking control of the institution of the Dalai Lama, CCP is also trying to exert influence Tibetan Buddhists settled in all parts of the world. This includes those in states such as Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, apart from nations such as Nepal, Bhutan and Mongolia.”

Washington DC-based International Campaign for Tibet’s Interim Vice President and International Director for Outreach Ms Tencho Gyatso said the present Dalai Lama’s actions and sacrifices over these 70-odd years have only deepened the Tibetan people’s connection with the spiritual leader. “The Dalai Lama now represents the whole of Tibetan culture, religion and nationhood.”

She said Communist China has attempted to rewrite all of Tibet’s historical narratives. “The Chinese government calls the Dalai Lama ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing’. The CCP has indulged in mass cover-ups of the atrocities it perpetrates in Tibet and on the Tibetans, just as it has tried to erase the Tiananmen Square massacre, as though it never happened.”

Gyatso said despite the CCP’s best efforts, the bond between the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama has only grown stronger.

“Young Tibetan monks that have been forced to grow up under the oppressive Chinese regime and have never even seen the Dalai Lama. Yet, their allegiance and spiritual connection to him are unbelievably strong. Over 150 Tibetans have self-immolated and called for the freedom of Tibet.”

Gyatso noted that while Tibetans enjoyed full freedom in India, a democratic nation, this freedom was impossible to imagine for those Tibetans currently under the CCP’s rule.

“Tibetans in Tibet today have to deal with a strictly regulated society. There are cameras everywhere and any display of Tibetan culture, language or loyalty to the Dalai Lama is dealt with very harshly.”

She said the final straw was the atheist CCP trying to control the process of selection of the next Dalai Lama by introducing laws that Tibetan Buddhists are forced to follow.

“Besides, the CCP leaders these days are talking about the idea of Sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism – that is, Buddhism with Chinese characteristics,” she added.

Gyatso noted that several democratic nations globally, including the United States, are now supporting the idea of a successor to the Dalai Lama, as chosen by the present spiritual leader and that CCP would have no say in it. “This position has been supported in the US administration’s Tibetan Policy and Support Act that threatens to penalise any Chinese authority that interferes with the institution of the Dalai Lama.”

Tamil Nadu receives more Cauvery water than allocated by SC for third year in a row

Due to heavy southwest monsoon rainfall in the Cauvery catchment area, the Karnataka government has released 211 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for the year 2020.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Karnataka government to supply 177.25 TMC of Cauvery water annually to Tamil Nadu.

The water supply period, which begins with the onset of the southwest monsoon in Karnataka, begins in June. This water supply will be in effect until May 31st next year. Due to strong southwest monsoon rainfall in the Cauvery catchment area, dams across the Cauvery River in Karnataka exceeded capacity, and the excess water was discharged to Tamil Nadu. The Mettur has received a significant amount of this surplus water.

Tamil Nadu has received more water than the Supreme Court has allotted for the third year in a row. Tamil Nadu got 405 TMC in 2018-19 and 275 TMC in 2019-20. This is the second occasion in the previous 20 years that the state has had higher realization than its due, at least for three years in a row.

“Union” – DMK’s weapon against Indian unity?

There is nothing wrong in the usage of the term “Union Government”. Even the Centre itself uses the term “Union Government” in all its press releases.

But, those who use it and their indirect motives need to be discussed. The word ‘union’ in the Indian constitution is used in the context of unity or cohesiveness. However, it is doubtful if the word is indeed employed in its original sense today by the DMK.

MK Stalin, the DMK President, used the term “Central” Government in many press statements before DMK came to power. But after coming to power, MK Stalin began using the term ‘Union Government’, particularly in a Twitter message he made shortly after his inauguration. Later, the pro-DMK media began to focus more on the use of the word ‘Union.’ Earlier this month, Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan remarked, “Without states, there is no union,” during a video conference of the 43rd GST Council meeting. Udhayanidhi Stalin, Stalin’s son and Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni MLA, who is the party’s new power center, is now using the term “Union Government” in his Twitter tweets. This isn’t the first time they’ve used the term “union” to refer to the “central” government. This is something MDMK leader Vaiko has been emphasizing for a long time.

Indeed, none of the DMK’s leaders or allies will have the courage to declare publicly that they do not want to remain a part of India.

But there is a slew of questions focused around a single word, ‘Union,’ because of the DMK’s past. The DMK, which advocated for secession after India’s independence, is well-known for renouncing it at one time. The demand for a ‘Dravidian state’ was made by the DMK’s parent organization, Dravidar Kazhagam.

The DMK has previously used the slogan “Dravida Nadu belongs to Dravidars” to promote separatist ideas. “Dravidian Liberation Day” was also observed on a particular day. Mr. Murasoli Maran, a late former Union Minister, made this argument in his 1956 book “Why We Need Dravidam.”

The idea of a separate ‘Dravida Nadu’ proposed by Dravidar Kazhagam was rejected by states in the ostensible Dravida Nadu; It was dismissed even inside Tamil Nadu. This is disclosed in a dialogue between late Chief Minister Annadurai and Gandhian Vinobabave, which Anna himself publicized. Vinobabave met Anna when he arrived in Tamil Nadu as part of his nationwide Boodhan Movement.

During the conversation, Anna told Vinobabave that they couldn’t stay with India and that Dravida Nadu would be made up of four states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala, with its own army and police force. Vinobabave interrupted and said that there was no support among Telugus in Andhra Pradesh for forming a government with Tamils. Thus, in the early days of the DMK, its only aim was to break the Indian nation and form a separate state. But in 1963, based on the recommendation of the National Integration Council, the Parliament passed the ‘Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution’ which made secessionist tendency in the country engendered by regional and linguistic loyalties illegal. It was only after that Anna changed the rules of the DMK and dropped its demand for separate Dravida Nadu.

The DMK in its early days spoke of secession without accepting India as one nation. The DMK’s first election manifesto emphasized secession and called for the constitution to be amended to provide for the right of states to secede. All of the aforementioned issues lead to skepticism of DMK.

Speaking for state rights is different and hiding behind those demands and talking separatism is different. The line dividing separatism and state rights is so thin that if state parties start playing a political game, it might open a pandora’s box.

From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, our country should be one nation, and there is nothing to be gained by splitting apart; unity is power. It is our responsibility to nip the bud of any secessionist tendencies.
