Farmers, Journalists condemn callous behaviour of Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister during consultative meeting in Thanjavur

MRK Panneerselvam, the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister, has caused discontent among farmers after being constantly behaving in a discourteous manner with farmers and agricultural authorities.

M R K Panneerselvam stirred controversy on Monday when he told a journalist, “If you ask a dumb question, you will receive a dumb reply.” The minister was speaking at a press briefing in Thanjavur, where he was reviewing kuruvai crop readiness in the Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.

Farmers criticize the minister’s conduct as a way of disregarding the farmers’ main problem while implicitly encouraging procurement center officials to engage in bribery. They also demanded that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin take strong action against the Agricultural Minister for his callous public behaviour.

P Viswanathan, state president of the Tamilagam Lake and River Irrigation Farmers Association, voiced his discontent with the way agriculture handled the question of farmer welfare, saying, “The complaint of a bribe raised by the journalist was true. We had even staged demonstrations over the issue then. The question was posed to the minister so that such issues can be curtailed now. The minister should not have made such an inappropriate reaction.”

This isn’t the first time the minister has acted insensitively in public. He was accused of not adequately listening to farmers’ demands during a consultative meeting held in Thanjavur a few days before about the opening of the Mettur dam.

Doctors Association accuses Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji for arrest of Scheduled Caste Medical Officer

Dr. Raveendranath, general secretary of the Doctors Association for Social Equality, has accused Minister Senthil Balaji of interfering in the arrest of a Scheduled Caste(SC) medical officer. He also demanded that the National Human Rights Commission conduct an inquiry into the matter.

According to a statement issued by the general secretary of the Doctors Association for Social Equality, Dr. Raveendranath:

“Non-SC medical officers are increasingly confronting SC medical officers during corona prevention operations in Tamil Nadu and insulting them based on their caste. In one such case, a non-SC young medical officer reportedly insulted an SC medical officer by grabbing his shirt and claiming to be a close relative of Minister Senthil Balaji. It is reprehensible that the SC medical officer was arrested and lodged in Villupuram jail after finding out the problem between the two.”

In this statement, Dr. Raveendranath added that Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji was involved in SC Medical Officer’s detention and that his imprisonment had created an environment of fear and insecurity among SC doctors and medical officers.

He went on to say that Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister should act quickly on this problem, releasing the medical officer imprisoned in Villupuram jail and dismissing the charges levelled against him.

He concluded his statement by demanding the National Human Rights Commission and the Tamil Nadu Health Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and punish those responsible.

MK Stalin advised his ministers and MLAs not to meddle in police affairs when he became Chief Minister.   However, a public outcry has erupted alleging that Minister Senthil Balaji is meddling in the police department.

Congress leader Chidambaram bites the dust with his own statements, apologizes later

BJP Mocks Chidambaram Article, Says 'No One except Congress Is Interested In His Knowledge'

Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram was left red-faced after his own statement made in an interview backfired at him.

In an interview to ANI, P. Chidambaram while speaking about the revised vaccination strategy announced by Prime Minister Modi on Monday, asked which Chief Minister of a State demanded for direct procurement for vaccines.

However, netizens were quick enough to point out that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Chidambaram’s own party leader Rahul Gandhi had asked demanded states to have more say in vaccine procurement.

West Bengal Chief Minister had written two letters to Prime Minister Modi – one in February and one in April – in which she demanded that states be given permission to procure vaccines.

Madras HC bans conversion therapy ‘to cure sexual orientation’

On Monday (June 7) , the LGBTQIA+ community had a reason to rejoice, as the Madras Hight Court issued a ban on ‘conversion therapy’ or medical attempts to cure sexual orientation in order to classify them into the binary two genders of male and female.

“Any attempts to medically “cure” or change the sexual orientation of LGBTIQA+ people to heterosexual or the gender identity of transgender people to cisgender should be prohibited,” the Justice N Anand Venkatesh said.

The Madras High Court also suggested measures to sensitize society and various branches of the State including police and judiciary to remove prejudices and misconceptions about LGBTQIA+ community and to ensure that they are brought into the mainstream of the society.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh passed the verdict in response to a plea filed by a lesbian couple who were seeking protection from their relatives.

“I have no hesitation in accepting that I too belong to the majority of commoners who are yet to comprehend homosexuality completely. Ignorance is no justification for normalising any form of discrimination,” he said while delivering the judgement.

The verdict also contained instructions for schools to include content into the curriculum that educated about the LGBTQIA+ community.

The verdict contained the following directions, according to Bar and Bench:

– Parent Teachers Association (PTA) meetings should be used to sensitize parents on issues of LGBTQIA+ community and gender nonconforming students so as to ensure supportive families.

– Further, necessary amendment should be made to policies and resources to include students belonging to LGBTQIA+ community in all spheres of school and college life. In this regard, the following suggestions were issued:

1.Ensure availability of gender-neutral restrooms for the gender-nonconforming student.

2.Change of name and gender on academic records for transgender persons.

3. Inclusion of ‘transgender’ in addition to M and F gender columns in application forms for admission, competitive entrance exams, etc.

4. Appointment of counselors who are LGBTQIA+ inclusive, for the staffs and students to address grievances, if any, and to provide effective solutions for the same.

The High Court also suggested measures that is to be undertaken by the police, judiciary and mental health professionals in order to sensitize themselves about the LGBTQIA+ community.

Social media companies have become dictatorial: ‘ZOHO’ Founder Sridhar Vembu

The Central government’s new “regulatory rules” aimed at regulating tech giants like Facebook, Whatsapp, and Twitter have sparked outrage among social media companies. Such regulations have been challenged in court by companies like WhatsApp.

In an interview with Hindu Tamil, Sridhar Vembu, the founder of ‘ZOHO’ and a member of the National Security Advisory Council, discussed issues such as the new “regulatory rules” for social media, the closure of schools, colleges, and industries for more than a year due to COVID, and a drastic change in the work culture of IT industries.

In response to a question about privacy being impacted by the Central government’s ‘new regulations’ for social media, Sridhar Vembhu stated,” Last year, When someone tweeted that the corona virus had leaked from China’s Wuhan lab, Twitter immediately deleted the tweets. However, evidence is beginning to emerge that the corona virus did not originate naturally, but rather was created in a lab and then spread outdoors.  If so, on what basis did Twitter delete such posts last year? Who gave those companies the power to decide what people should and should not say? Whether one likes Trump or not is a different issue. he got 47 percent of the votes. However, his account has been disabled by Twitter and Facebook. Thus it makes no sense to say that institutions with a dictatorial tendency protect the freedom of speech of the people.”

He went on to say that unlike social media companies, which are not responsible for their actions, the government has a responsibility to its citizens and that the government may set reasonable restrictions on those firms.

People have the right to dissent when the government makes a mistake, he continued, and unlike social media giants, which are totally dictatorial and operate indiscriminately, an elected government cannot go beyond a certain point to quiet those who speak out against it.

He mentioned the case of Apple vs. FBI, which occurred in the United States a few years ago, in which Apple refused to share information about a suspect citing user privacy protection, and that he emphasized how large tech companies undermine national security and sovereignty.

He added, “We need to understand another thing. It’s been 28 years since the Internet was introduced, and its use is growing exponentially. So far, no legal framework has been developed for Internet use. Now that the Internet has become an essential one, definite rules regarding it are needed. The journey to that is now underway.”

He discussed the possibilities for Indian-based apps like Koo to expand to other countries in the future, as well as the possibility of an innovation in the future to connect Koo and Twitter through a bridge, similar to how we mail between Yahoo and Gmail.

Sridhar Vembu, in reaction to the issue of some Tech companies having monopolies in the market, stated,” Big companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon are completely capturing the social media markets. All countries are beginning to realize that if this trend continues it will pose a great danger and are considering measures to curb the authoritarian tendencies of these companies. At the same time, the world is now moving in the opposite direction of de-globalization and the countries are moving towards a self-sufficient economy. In that sense, it is possible to create new standards based on Internet usage. Currently, this situation can only be addressed through new quality standards.”

He explained that the COVID period enabled ZOHO to make organizational adjustments, such as opening offices in small and marginal towns and rural areas like Tirunelveli, Srivilliputhur, and Madurai, and making it a standard to come to work just a few days a week.

He expressed his reservations about competitive exams like NEET, JEE, and others by saying,” the closure of schools and colleges during this one-year period will have no impact on student’s learning. I am against not only NEET, but all competitive exams. Competitive selection is not the right way to measure proficiency. In that sense, the cancellation of the exams is no big deal. We are in a situation where we need to change our education system as a whole.”

He concluded by saying that we have not fully utilized the abilities of rural people and that we need to focus on doing so, which ZOHO is doing.

The real sixer: Govt of India to provide free vaccine to all Indian citizens above 18 years of age

Narendra Modi bureaucrats bureaucracy IAS officers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation today (June 7) briefing about the vaccination strategy and many important measures to be undertaken by Government of India in the coming months.

Terming the pandemic the biggest calamity of last hundred years, a pandemic not seen nor experienced in the modern world, the Prime Minister said that the country fought the pandemic at many fronts.

As many states came forward with a demand for reconsideration of the vaccination strategy and for bringing back the system that was there before 1st May,  the Prime Minister announced that it has been decided that the 25 per cent vaccination that was with states will now be undertaken by the Government of India.

This will be rolled out in two weeks. In two weeks, the Centre and states will make necessary preparations as per new guidelines.  The Prime Minister further announced, that from 21st June onwards, Government of India will provide free vaccine to all Indian citizens above 18 years of age. Government of India will buy 75 per cent of the total production of the vaccine producers and provide to the states free of cost. No state government would be spending anything for vaccines. Till now, crores of people got free vaccine, now 18 years segment will be added to this.

PM Modi informed that the system of 25 per cent vaccines being procured directly by the private hospitals will continue. It will be incumbent upon the State governments to monitor that only 150 rupees service charge is levied by the private hospitals over the decided price of the vaccines.

In another major announcement, the Prime Minister conveyed the decision of extension Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna till Deepawali. This means that till November, 80 crore people will continue to get decided amount of free food grain every month. During the pandemic, the government is standing with the poor for all his needs as his friend, said the Prime Minister.

Recalling the unprecedented rise in the demand for the medical oxygen during the second wave during the months of April and May, the Prime Minister said that the challenge was met at the war footing deploying all the systems of the government. In the history of India, this level of demand for medical oxygen was never experienced, said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister said that globally, vaccine producing companies and countries are far less than what is the global demand for the vaccines. In such a scenario, he said that made in India vaccine was critical for India.

The Prime Minister, pointed out that in the past, India used to get vaccines decades after they were developed abroad. “This always resulted in a situation in the past where India could not even start vaccination while other countries used to finish the vaccine work.”, he said.

PM Modi said that by working in mission mode, the government raised the vaccination coverage from 60 per cent to 90 per cent in 5-6 years. We not only enhanced the speed but also widened the ambit of vaccination, said the Prime Minister.

“This time  India warded off all the apprehensions and, through clean intentions, clear policy and constant hard work,  not just one but two made-in-India vaccines for Covid were launched in India. Our scientists proved their calibre. Till today, more than 23 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the country.”, the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister recalled that Vaccine Task force was constituted when there were just few thousand Covid-19 cases and vaccine companies were supported by the government in all possible ways in trials and  funding for research and development. The Prime Minister informed that due to great effort and hard work, supply of vaccine is about to increase in coming days. He conveyed that, today, seven companies are producing different type of vaccines. He also informed that trials for three more vaccines are in the advanced stage. The Prime Minister also talked of trials for two vaccines for children and a ‘nasal vaccine’.

Prime Minister, dwelled on the differing views from various quarters on the vaccination drive. “As the corona cases started declining, questions arose about the lack of choice for states and some people questioned why the central government is deciding everything. Flexibility in lockdown and one-size-does-not-fit-all type of argument were forwarded.” he said. PM Modi further said that starting from 16 January  to April end, India’s vaccination programme was run mostly under the Central government. “Free vaccination for all was moving forward and people were showing discipline in getting vaccinated when their turn came. In the midst of all this demands for decentralization of vaccination were raised, decision about priority to certain age groups were raised. Many types of pressures were exerted and certain sections of media took it as campaign.” the PM recalled about the different rhetoric that were peddled by the media and opposition State governments.

The Prime Minister warned against the people who are spreading rumours against vaccination. Such people are playing with the lives of people and there is a need to stay vigilant against them said the Prime Minister.

Banihal-Qazigund tunnel in J&K almost nearing completion

The 8.5-km long double tube Banihal-Qazigund tunnel along the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is going through the testing and commissioning process. The tunnel will serve as connectivity life-line during winter.

According to officials of Navayuga Engineering Company Limited(NECL), it is likely to become operational in the coming weeks, the firm involved in the construction of the tunnel.

“We are presently engaged in the testing commissioning process after the installation of all required equipment including ventilation and electric system,” Chief Manager of NECL, Muneeb Tak, told PTI.

Sources at NECL said that the ongoing work is anticipated to be completed within a few weeks, and the tunnel will be open to traffic by the end of this month as per a report in Times of India.

The strategically important project connecting Banihal in Jammu to Qazigund in South Kashmir would bypass the Jawahar tunnel and Shaitan Nalla, which is prone to heavy snowfall and slippery conditions during the winters. Furthermore, the new tunnel has an elevation of 1,790 metres (5,870 feet), 400 metres lower than the elevation of the Jawahar tunnel, making the new tunnel less prone to avalanches.

Also, the new tunnel would cut the distance between Jammu’s Banihal and South Kashmir’s Qazigund by 16 km from the present 35 km. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art exhaust system and 126 jet fans, 234 CCTVs and a firefighting system.

“A corridor between two tubes after every 500 meters inside the tunnel has been built, and this can be used in case of any emergency in either tube,” Tak added.

IIT Delhi scientists were one the first to publish paper on lab leak theory of Wuhan virus

As per a report in Deccan Herald, in February 2020, a group of researchers from Kusuma School of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, published a paper titled “Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag”, which they later were forced to withdraw.

As a growing number of scientists across the world are now calling for investigation for the lab-leak theory of the Covid-19 virus/Wuhan Virus, this particular paper has come into the limelight, being the first scientific research in light of lab-made virus theory.

One of the excerpts from the withdrawn paper reads, “We are currently witnessing a major epidemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019- nCoV). The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses.”

“The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous [accidental] in nature. This work provides yet unknown insights on 2019-nCoV and sheds light on the evolution and pathogenicity of this virus with important implications for diagnosis of this virus. ” it further adds.

The withdrawal note on biorxiv.org states that [researchers] “intend to revise it in response to comments received from the research community on their technical approach and their interpretation of the results.”

A researcher associated with the paper, PhD scholar at IIT Delhi, Ashutosh Kumar Pandey, tweeted, “If published this will be tight slap on the cartel of Virologists who are hell bent to make this virus natural. SARS-CoV-2 is not natural. We said this in Jan 2020, we are saying it again.” mentioning a study by British Professor Angus Dalgleish and Norwegian scientist Dr Birger Sørensen.

The United Kingdom(UK) based newspaper Daily Mail recently had obtained  and published a study which claims that Chinese scientists created COVID-19 in a Wuhan lab, and when it leaked they tried to cover their tracks by reverse-engineering versions of the virus to make it look like it evolved naturally from bats.

The authors of the papers were Dr Dalgleish and Sørensen, who had submitted their findings in the Quarterly Review of Biophysics Discovery.

Also, Antony Fauci who is a physician-scientist and immunologist and is the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to the president was aware of the Indian research but chose to ignore the findings. He called the results “outlandish”.
