“People have grown impatient, they can’t even bear power cut for half hour”: DMK Min on frequent power outages in TN

Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji chaired a review meeting on power supply and maintenance at Kotturpuram, Chennai a few days ago. He was also joined by Health Minister Ma Subramanian.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Minister Ma. Subramanian who was addressing the question of frequent power cuts in the state said that tolerance level of the people has decreased and even if the power supply is cut off for half an hour, the electrical workers are being harassed by incessant phone calls.

This has caused a stir with people from different quarters saying that the DMK is trying to blame the people for its inefficient administration and faults.

Political Commentator and prominent YouTuber Maridhas took a dig saying if the DMK’s next in line dynast Udhyanidhi Stalin would be able to sleep at 11 PM in the night without power. “You can’t even fix the problem of power outage and you’re talking about people’s tolerance?”, Maridhas lashed out in his social media.

Ever since the DMK came to power, Tamil Nadu has been witnessing frequent power outages reminding people of the earlier regime of the DMK during 2006-11 when the state was plunged into darkness with 12-16 hour power cuts.

Frequent power cuts along with high power bills after the new DMK government came to power has caused resentment among people.

NIA arrests SDPI member in Bengaluru riot case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a key conspirator in the Bengaluru riots in August last year, which claimed the lives of four persons.

The accused identified as 38-year-old Syed Abbas, a resident of Govindpur and the ward president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in Nagawara in Bengaluru, was produced before a special NIA court in Bengaluru which sent him to six-day custody of the agency.

On August 11 of last year, nearly 3,000 people went on a rampage in Bengaluru, torching the residences of Congress MLA R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy and his sister Jayanthi in response to an inflammatory social media post by a cousin of the lawmaker. The mob then set fire to the DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations, ostensibly because the relative was being held there. The vandals caused damage to both public and private property by setting fire to a number of vehicles.

The police had opened fire to control the angry crowd, killing three people on the spot while the fourth person allegedly involved in the violence died in a hospital later. The NIA has charge-sheeted 138 suspects since taking over the case on September 21, 2020.

NIA said that further investigation is underway.

Vice President calls upon research community and IITs to come up with intelligent solutions to thwart terrorists’ sinister plans

Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu called upon the research community and institutions like IITs to come up with intelligent solutions to thwart the sinister plans of terrorists to hurt the country’s interests.

Speaking after visiting the site of India’s first 3D Printed House in India at IIT Madras, the Vice President observed that terrorism is the enemy of mankind and referred to the use of low-flying drones by terrorists and pointed that they cannot be detected military radars.

He advised institutions like IITs to also focus on areas related to terrorism and come up with solutions to counter the efforts of terrorists.

Earlier, the Vice President commended the efforts of the team behind the project of India’s first 3D Printed House- a joint collaboration of IIT Madras and a startup, Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions.

Emphasizing on the developmental prerogatives of technology, the Vice President highlighted the importance of ‘industry-institute’ partnerships in scaling up emerging technologies and achieving commercial viability.

Observing that cutting edge technologies provide a glimpse into the future, the Vice President stressed the importance of scaling them up so that they are accessible to the common man. ‘Technologies should not be limited to being only ‘proof of concept’. It can greatly alleviate human suffering and make a common man’s life comfortable. That is the ultimate purpose of any research’, he added.

The Vice President said the project showed the possible benefits of the fourth industrial revolution, where a fusion of smart technologies like 3D printing and robotics has the potential to change traditional manufacturing practices.

Noting the advantages of the technology, the Vice President said that 3D printing in construction offers a completely customizable house design and reduces manual intervention. He called for more such technological innovations to address housing shortage in India and to fulfill the ambitious low-cost housing projects like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Speaking on higher education, the Vice President suggested that premier institutes like IITs are best placed to foresee the upcoming technological revolutions and keep the country better prepared in seizing new opportunities. He also advised higher education institutes to go beyond classroom programmes and prepare students for real-world challenges by inculcating a holistic approach to problem-solving. “This way, they will become our job creators and not just job seekers”, he said.

He stressed the need for IITs to identify the focus areas for technological intervention in our country, keeping in view the national priorities and local relevance. By putting the best minds on the socially-relevant research problems, IITs would be able to fulfill their mandate and purpose, he added.

The Vice President also commended IIT Madras for encouraging innovation and for nurturing a vibrant startup ecosystem through its state-of-the-art research park. He also complimented the team from Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions and noted that Indian startups are diversifying beyond IT solutions and making their mark in agri-tech, manufacturing, transport and construction.

Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister, Thiru S Ramachandran, IIT Madras Director, Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Deans and Heads of Departments, and representatives of Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions were present.

Actor Surya should start free NEET coaching for govt school students – BJP General Secretary Karu Nagarajan

BJP state general secretary Karu Nagarajan has said that Actor Surya should give training to poor government school students and make them doctors.

BJP state general secretary Karu Nagarajan told reporters at the Kamalalayam in Thiyagaraya Nagar, Chennai, that,” A case has been filed in the High Court against the AK Rajan committee investigating the impact of NEET for medical admission. During the hearing, the High Court asked the state government a number of questions, claiming that the committee is in violation of the Supreme Court ruling.”

He went on to say that the NEET exam has no bearing on social justice and that students in previous methods of medical admission were not given a second chance, but in the NEET exam students are given three chances.

He further said that 405 government school students were admitted to medical school last year only because of the NEET exam and that the DMK, which was part of the UPA coalition at the time, did not oppose NEET when it was initially proposed.

Kerala loses ₹3,500 crore investment due to inspection harassment by Communist regime, 20K potential jobs lost

Kitex Garments, the world’s second largest manufacturer of kids apparel has decided to withdraw from ₹3,500 crore investment plan Kerala due to constant inspections tantamount to harassment by the Pinarayi Vijayan Communist government.

Kitex Managing Director, Sabu Jacob was quoted saying in Kerala Kaumudi, “We have already acquired 30 acres of land for the apparel park at Kizhakkambalam in Kochi. The project report has also been completed and the project would have provided jobs for 20,000 people. The three industrial parks were envisaged to promote start-ups providing all infrastructural facilities. Each of these parks would have created 5,000 job opportunities. The decision to scrap the project has been taken as I am fed up with the continuous harassment at the hands of the authorities. Whoever invests in Kerala will lose peace of mind and will be driven to suicide,”.

On the constant inspections conducted by the state government of Kerala, Jacob said “On Tuesday, it was the turn of the pollution control board. Each team has 40 to 50 officers and searches every nook and corner of the company. They grill employees for hours but do not reveal what violations they have found. The Kitex factory has been functioning here for the past 26 years and we have 11,000 employees. They arrive with a huge team violating Covid protocols and bring camera teams of online media,”.

“While our neighbouring states give a red carpet welcome to investors, the Kerala government treats them as traitors. They are branded as bourgeoisie, exploiters, encroachers, capitalists, and criminals and humiliated in public,” Sabu was quoted saying in the report.

Kitex had signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government at the Global Investment Summit held in Kochi in 2020, wherein a new investment of ₹3,500 crore was to be made in the state. However, all stands cancelled as Kerala loses one of the biggest projects.

Vatican faces heat for hiding pedophile priests in Poland, 368 boys and girls abused in last 3 years

In recent times, the Roman Catholic Church had to endure several embarrassing and shocking actions of its clergy, and now in Poland, the Catholic Church is facing allegations of mass sexual abuse committed by clergy that involves minor children.

According to the reports, published in New York Times, the Catholic Church of Poland has been accused of covering up crimes of sexual abuse of minors by members of the clergy which has been the standard operating procedure all over the world.

However, on Monday (June 28) the Church acknowledged that it had received complaints of abuse from 368 boys and girls in the last three years.

Immediately after admitting of a massive coverup, the Polish church’s Archbishop Wojciech Polak, pleaded for forgiveness from “those wronged and all those shocked by the evil in the church”.

He said the figures did not express the full depth of the crimes of sexual abuse of minors perpetrated by some clergymen as most of the victims are under age 15.

“I would like to address all those who have been wronged and scandalised by the evil in the church. I would like to ask for forgiveness once again,” said Wojciech Polak, the Archbishop of Gniezno.

Nearly 75% of the complaints reported on Monday were related to abuse incidents before 2018, with some dating back to 1958.

So far 39% of the complaints have been found to be true as investigations are being carried out to look into the remaining cases.

For the Vatican, these are difficult times as every time a cases of sexual abuse emerge out of the pulpit, there is an obvious case of a coverup.

The Vatican has now launched its own investigation of sex crimes committed by its own clergy as in the case of Stanislaw Dziwisz, who served as Archbishop of Krakow from 2005-2016 who covered paedophilia allegations.

UK Labour Party drags Indian PM Modi in country’s domestic politics

The Labour Party in the United Kingdom (UK) which traditionally received the majority of the Indian votes during election has released a poll leaflet that accused UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson of whitewashing Islamophobia and also issued pamphlets with the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with UK PM Boris Johnson.

The leaflet was circulated for the Batley and Spen by-poll in West Yorkshire scheduled for Thursday (July 31) that shows Modi in a handshake with Conservative Party Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the G7 Summit in 2019 with the message “Don’t risk a Tory MP who is not on your side”.

It has also been reported that the leaflet was circulated mostly in Muslim-dominated areas.

In the last few years, the Labour party has become a “divisive” and “anti-India” party with the Indian diaspora moving away from the party. This had led to a massive victory for the conservatives in the 2019 general election.

After the leaflet became public it created a huge uproar in social media. Tory MP Richard Holden posted the image on Twitter and asked a question to Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer if he would have done the same had he been PM and met Modi at any international summit.

“Dear Keir Starmer, please can you explain this leaflet and clarify whether a Labour PM/politician would refuse to have any relationship with the world’s largest democracy? Is this your message to 1.5 million members of the Indian diaspora in UK,” questioned the Conservative Friends of India (CFIN) diaspora organisation.

But the outrage was not limited to the Conservatives. Within the Tory’s own party, the Labour Friends of India (LFIN) diaspora group also demanded the “immediate withdrawal” of the leaflet.

“The Labour Party is right to call out Boris Johnson’s lack of action following the conclusion that anti-Muslim sentiment remains a problem within the Conservative Party. It is unfortunate that the Labour Party used a picture of the Prime Minister of India, the world’s largest democracy and one of the UK’s closest friends, from the G7 meeting in 2019, on its leaflet,” LFIN said in its statement.

Indian-origin veteran Labour MP Virendra Sharma said this was “cheap”,  “divide and rule” and “dog-whistle” politics not worthy of Labour.

“The Labour Party will win by bringing people together and uniting the community, to do anything else will divide our community and play into Tory hands,” said Sharma, who represents Ealing Southall in London that has a large Indian diaspora presence.

Another Indian-origin Labour MP, Navendu Mishra, took to Twitter to declare that “racism is alive and well within Labour”.

“A hierarchy of racism exists inside the party and some groups are seen as fair game for attacks based on religion/race/heritage,” said Mishra, MP for Stockport in northern England.

“Labour will not win by playing divide and rule politics against our communities. We will win based on a principled stance against racism and discrimination of all kinds inside and outside the party,” he said.

The Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP) critised the labour party and called it “votebank politics” of the campaign leaflet.

“OFBJP objects to this kind of anti-India branding just for votebank politics. Such posters and statements are clearly a sign of divisive politics played by Labour,” said OFBJP President Kuldeep Shekhawat.

It must be noted that the Labour Party has now been taken over by extreme leftists and Islamists who have now constantly attacked India, particularly over the Kashmir issue which led to a massive defeat for the party since 1935 leading to the resignation of Jeremy Corbyn. The
