INC appoints presidents for its overseas wing while the party in India remains rudderless with no leader

Congress

As the oldest political party in India, the Indian National Congress grapples with the predilection of selecting the next president of the party, on Wednesday (July 8), it appointed several Presidents and office-bearers for the party’s “international wing” – the Indian Overseas Congress.

In a press release, the Congress party said that it was glad to appoint President for a two-year period in several countries in the European region while the party has failed to appoint a President for national leadership.

The aim of the newly appointed Presidents of the Indian Overseas Congress is to help build and expand the grand old party and its ideology in the respective countries said the statement.

“In this capacity, you are expected to identify and work with qualified, capable, committed, and concerned people to lead the various initiatives of the IOC,” the Congress party said.

Nine Congress party members have been appointed as Presidents of Indian Overseas Congress units in their respective countries.

The names are:

  1. Dilbag Channa – Italy
  2. Joy Kochattu – Switzerland
  3. Dr Sonia Heldst – Sweden
  4. Sunil Korah – Austria
  5. Suldleevan Preet Singh – Belgium
  6. Harpinder Singh Ging- Holland
  7. Amarjit Singh (Amba) – Poland
  8. Dr Komal Kumar Javarappa – Finland
  9. Garisober Singh – Norway

In addition, the Congress party also appointed several office-bearers and Core committee members of the Indian Overseas Congress in Europe.

According to their website, the Indian Overseas Congress claims to be a group of “concerned, committed, diverse, capable and courageous Overseas Indians and friends of India”.

Sam Pitroda, a veteran Congress leader and a close aide of the Gandhi family, is the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress.

However, the Indian Overseas Congress has been wrought with several controversies with a history of joining hands with countries that interfere in India’s domestic politics and detrimental to India’s national interests.

In December 2020, one of the senior members of the Indian Overseas Congress had unfurled a Pakistani flag at a protest against the Indian government over passing farm laws in Germany.

Also, in 2019, the Congress party opened its overseas office in Turkey just a few days after Turkey had extended its support to Pakistan at the UN on the Kashmir issue.

Watch: DMK Fisheries Minister carried by fishermen to the shore to avoid wetting his shoes

A video of DMK Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan being carried to the shore by a fisherman because the minister didn’t want to get his dazzling white shoes wet has gone viral on social media.

Anitha Radhakrishnan, the DMK MLA from Thiruchendur constituency and Minister for Fisheries in Tamil Nadu, was at Palaverkadu to inspect the effects of sea erosion.

When Anitha Radhakrishnan’s boat approached the shoreline, he realized he would have to walk the remaining distance in the water to get to land. However, because the Minister did not want to get his bright white sports shoes wet, he let a fisherman carry him to the shore as his followers and other fishermen crowded around him for support.

Recognizing that his video was becoming viral for all the wrong reasons, the minister gave an evasive reply, claiming that it was that fisherman who insisted on carrying him on their shoulders out of affection.

This special squad will be named Special Police Operation Team and will include 58 personnel, including a dog squad, a bomb disposal team, and a wireless trapping unit (SPOT).

The UP ATS officer said the idea to raise an all-women squad with specialized training was based on increasing representation of women at workplaces and their deployment at sensitive locations and help carry out rescue operations and tackling women troublemakers would also be easier with this squad.

ATS Inspector General G.K. Goswami said that SPOT would also perform security surveys during peacetime and train special weapons advanced tactics teams of district police.

SPOT is a specialized unit of ATS. The first unit raised in 2018 comprised men only and its exclusive training center is located in Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow.

EAM S Jaishshankar makes surprise visit to Iran, meets President-elect Ebrahim Raisi

As the Taliban in Afganistan gains ground after the withdrawal of the NATO forces, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in a surprise diplomatic visit to Iran, met with President-elect Ebrahim Raisi which is a rare gesture by Iran when to allow the incoming president meet a visiting foreign dignitary.

Jaishankar is now the first foreign dignitary and senior minister from the Modi government to meet Iran’s hard-liner President-elect Raisi to succeed Hassan Rouhani.

During the meeting, Jaishankar delivered a written congratulatory message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President-elect Raisi and both sides agreed on the necessity to strengthen inter-Afghan dialogue leading and later a statement was issued by the Iranian foreign ministry.

The date of India’s EAM’s travel to Iran, however, coincided with a delegation of Taliban officials led by Shir Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai visiting Iran from Doha to promote intra-Afghan talks following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“Thank President-elect Ebrahim Raisi for his gracious welcome. Handed over a personal message from PM @narendramodi. Appreciate his warm sentiments for India. Deeply value his strong commitment to strengthen our bilateral ties and expand cooperation on regional and global issues (sic),” Jaishankar said in a tweet.

According to Iran’s foreign ministry, Jaishankar had “thanked Iran for its efforts” for bringing the Afghan government and the Taliban leaders “closer to a comprehensive political solution” even as the intra-Afghan talks remained in a stalemate.

The talks with Iran also featured Oil Trade, the future of the Chabahar Port, and the resumption of oil imports from Iran, which were stopped in May 2019 due to American sanctions under the Trump administration.

India is now cautiously watching the Joe Biden administration and the lifting of the sanctions as New Delhi is keen to resume the bilateral trade with Iran on oil and petrochemicals.

For India in order to remain relevant in Afganistan, the Chabahar Port is critical as it gives India connectivity and trade to Afghanistan.
