Afghan Vice President: Pakistan threatens to use its air assets against Afghan National Army in support of the Taliban as the US withdraws

Afghanistan’s Vice President Amrullah Saleh has said that Pakistan has threatened to use its air force against the Afghan National Army as the Taliban resurgence continues after the withdrawal of the foreign forces, particularly the United States.

Saleh said via his Twitter account, “The Pakistan Air Force has given an official warning to the Afghan Army and Air Force that any attempt to drive the Taliban out of the Spin Boldak area will be met with resistance. In some areas, the Pakistani air force is currently providing close air support to the Taliban.”

The Taliban and the Pakistani military regard Amrullah Saleh as a thorn in their flesh, and as one of the most powerful leaders in the new Afghanistan, he has faced assassination attempts in the past.

Saleh had previously served as Afghanistan’s Minister of Interior Affairs and the head of the National Directorate of Security, leading successful operations against the Taliban.

Now he claims that the Pakistan Air Force is providing close air support to the Taliban forces fighting the Afghan Army and that he has evidence that Pakistan has warned the Afghan military not to attack the Taliban from the Spin Buldak area near the Balochistan border.

Spin Buldak is not far from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan which is also home to the Taliban leadership and also an important hub for communication and logistics.

As of now, nearly 90 percent of US troops and equipment have already left Afghanistan, and as the Taliban captures more territory it has also managed to get hold lot of military hardware left behind by fleeing Afghan government soldiers and from those who surrendered. The inevitability of a Taliban takeover of Kabul seems certain after it was driven out nearly 20 years ago.

Taliban asks local imams to provide list of girls above 15 and widows under 45 to be married off to its fighters

As the Taliban surge in Afganistan continues with the aid of the Pakistan military, residents of areas under their control are now beginning to feel bitter past as one of the first edicts issued by the Taliban in the form of a letter to the local imam is to find out girls above 15 and widows under 45 to be married to Taliban fighters.

The letter issued by the Taliban’s cultural commission reads, “All imams and mullahs in captured areas should provide the Taliban with a list of girls above 15 and widows under 45 to be married to Taliban fighters,”

The other Islamic instructions are that women can no longer go to the bazaar without a male companion, and men should not shave their beards. and they have also banned smoking and violators of the rules “will be seriously dealt with”.

The Taliban blitzing after the final withdrawal of foreign troops and have captured districts, seizing key border crossings, and encircling provincial capitals and are enforcing puritanical hardline interpretation of the Quran like it did when it ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and the imposition of Sharia law.

Again the past has come to haunt the people of Afganistan as women have been ordered to stay indoors unless accompanied by a male relative, girls banned from school, and death by stoning for those found guilty of crimes such as adultery.

The Taliban now wants the daughters and widows under the age of 45 to be married off to its foot soldiers which is seen as an incentive to its fighters who are mostly young uneducated madrasa jihadis.

These edicts were issued by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice which can be called the religious police when the Taliban’s first came to power.

Madras High Court expresses dissatisfaction with HR&CE’s protection of temple properties

The Madras High Court expressed concern with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department’s (HR&CE) performance in protecting temple properties and warned that HR&CE officials involved in temple looting would face severe consequences.

The Madras High Court has given this observation while hearing a case seeking direction to recover temple land belonging to the Agastheeswarar temple in Nungambakkam, Chennai from encroachers.

The case was heard by a bench presided by Chief Justice Sanjib Bannerjee. The petitioner told the High Court that the HR&CE officials violated a previous order to recover the property from the encroacher, forcing him to file a contempt of court petition to enforce the court order.

The HR&CE has been directed by the court to file an affidavit detailing the complete property of Agastheeswarar Temple as well as the quantity of land that has been encroached upon.

The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court further stated that some HR&CE officers had become complacent in recovering temple properties and that the court will take stern action against them.

“India can’t sacrifice future ambition”: Commerce Minister bats strongly for India and the Developing World at the WTO

Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution and Textiles Piyush Goyal today spoke strongly for the rights of developing countries at the Ministerial meeting of the WTO on the crucial fisheries subsidy negotiations. The meeting was attended by Ministers and Ambassadors from other WTO members and the DG WTO Dr. Ngozi.

Delivering a strong statement on behalf of India Goyal stated that India is very keen to finalize the agreement because irrational subsidies and overfishing by many countries is hurting Indian fishermen and their livelihood. He expressed his disappointment that the Membership is still short of finding the right balance and fairness in the agreement. The minister also emphasized Prime Minister Modi’s thrust to promote fishing sector and protect small fishermen.

Minister Goyal cautioned that we should not repeat the mistakes made during the Uruguay Round three decades ago that allowed unequal and trade-distorting entitlements for select developed country Members, particularly in agriculture. These unfairly constrained less developed members who did not have the capacity and resources to support their industry or farmers then. Minister Goyal expressed concern that any unbalanced or unequal agreement now would bind us into current fishing arrangements, which may not meet future requirements. He pointed out that it is essential that big subsidizers take greater responsibility to reduce their subsidies and fishing capacities, in accordance with the principles of ‘Polluter Pays’ and ‘Common but Differentiated Responsibilities’.

Minister Goyal observed that any agreement must recognize that different countries are at different stages of development and that current fishing arrangements reflect their current economic capacities. The agreement has to provide for current and future needs. While putting forth India’s demands, he said that the per capita fisheries subsidy given by most developing countries is minuscule compared to advanced fishing nations. Minister Goyal clearly demanded that countries like India who are yet to develop fishing capacities, cannot sacrifice their future ambitions. Allowing advanced nations to continue grant of subsidies is unequal, unfair and unjust.

While responding to the specific question posed by the DG to the ministers, he said that limiting Special & Differential Treatment (S&DT) to poor and artisanal fishermen only is neither appropriate nor affordable, and is not acceptable. S&DT is required to not only protect livelihoods of poor fishermen but also to address food security concerns, have necessary policy space for developing the fisheries sector and the need for larger time period for any transition..

Highlighting that protection of environment is ingrained in the Indian ethos for ages and has been repeatedly stated by our Prime Minister, Minister Goyal urged that India is committed to conclude the negotiations, as long as it provides for balancing current and future fishing needs, preserving space for equitable growth in fishing capacities in future, and an effective S&DT without any imbalances.

₹ 75,000 crore released to States and UTs with Legislature as GST Compensation shortfall

Ministry of Finance has released today ₹75,000 crore to the States and UTs with Legislature under the back-to-back loan facility in lieu of GST Compensation.  This release is in addition to normal GST compensation being released every 2 months out of actual cess collection.

Subsequent to the 43rd GST Council Meeting held on 28.05.2021, it was decided that the Central Government would borrow ₹1.59 lakh crore and release it to States and UTs with Legislature on a back-to-back basis to meet the resource gap due to the short release of Compensation on account of inadequate amount in the Compensation Fund. This amount is as per the principles adopted for a similar facility in FY 2020-21, where an amount of ₹1.10 lakh crore was released to States under a similar arrangement. This amount of ₹1.59 lakh crore would be over and above the compensation in excess of ₹1 lakh crore(based on cess collection) that is estimated to be released to States/UTs with Legislature during this financial year. The sum total of ₹2.59 lakh crore is expected to exceed the amount of GST compensation accruing in FY 2021-22.

All eligible States and UTs (with Legislature) have agreed to the arrangements of funding of the compensation shortfall under the back-to-back loan facility.  For effective response and management of COVID-19 pandemic and a step-up in capital expenditure all States and UTs have a very important role to play. For assisting the States/UTs in their endeavour, Ministry of Finance has frontloaded the release of assistance under the back-to-back loan facility during FY 2021-22 ₹75, 000 crore (almost 50 % of the total shortfall for the entire year) released today in a single instalment. The balance amount will be released in the second half of 2021-22 in steady instalments.

The release of ₹75,000 crore being made now is funded from borrowings of GoI in 5-year securities, totalling ₹68,500 crore and 2-year securities for ₹6,500 crore issued in the current financial year, at a Weighted Average Yield of 5.60 and 4.25 percent per annum respectively.

It is expected that this release will help the States/UTs in planning their public expenditure among other things, for improving, health infrastructure and taking up infrastructure projects.

Tamil Nadu has received ₹3818.5 crores as GST Compensation for the shortfall.

Kerala Islamic cleric says women who travel by night are prostitutes and deserve to be raped

In a video that has now gone viral on social media, Islamic scholar’ Salih Bathery was heard saying that women going out at night after 9 o’clock are prostitutes and they should be killed.

This is a series of yet another incident in Kerala that shows the growing influence of radical Islamic clerics and the rise in crime against women in the Communist-ruled state.

One must not be confused when they look at Swalih who looks like a small boy as he is 27 years old who has Progeria also known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) or the “Benjamin Button” disease.

In the controversial video, Swalih justified the actions of brutal rapist Govindachamy who raped and killed a girl named Soumya. Swalih criticised the court’s judgement and the judge who heard the Soumya case.

According to Swalih, Govindachamy had said that he raped Soumya because she was travelling at night and according to him every girl travelling at night was a prostitute.

The viral video made by this Islamic cleric who has quite a following caused outrage in Kerala. However, the police are yet to take action against Swalih Bathery for the archaic anti-women sentiment.

Coimbatore CSI pastors ₹25 cr embezzlement case gets deferred as TN govt fails to file response

Jerome Jacob, a pastor with the Church of South India, had raised a complaint of embezzlement of funds to the tune of ₹25 crores against the office bearers of Coimbatore Diocese, Church of South India.

The following former and current office bearers were named in a chargesheet filed by Crime Branch of Coimbatore City Police – Bishop Timothy Ravinder (63) Former Honorary Secretary Reverend Charles Samraj (43), Former Honorary Treasurer Mr. D. Selvakumar (50) and Advisor David Mangal Dass (67). The four named in the chargesheet had applied for bail.

However, the prosecution which has already been deferred thrice as the government did not file its response has once again been adjourned by the court.

The government has claimed that police are unable to proceed with the investigation due to the pandemic-induced lockdown. They have requested another 15 days to respond with a report on the investigation conducted so far.

Justice Sakthivel has set the date for the next hearing at August 3rd. Until then, the arrest of the chargesheeted individuals has been stayed.

It is to be noted the chargesheeted individuals are in positions of high authority in an important religious institution of South India, the CSI.

The Coimbatore diocese itself runs a very large number of institutions – 13 Nursery Schools, 69 Primary and Middle Schools, 18 High and Higher Secondary Schools, 2 teacher’s training institutes, 2 Arts and Science Colleges, a Community College, 2 vocation training institutes and engineering college in the districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode and Salem.

This comes on the wave of allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct in Christian institutions in Tamil Nadu.

Seven temples in Coimbatore demolished by government, idols given away to public

The Coimbatore City Corporation demolished seven temples in Kumarasamy Nagar on Tuesday (July 13) along the Muthanankulam bund. One of the temples is said to be over one hundred years old and authorities used ample deployment of police forces to carry out the demolishing.

Coimbatore corporation executive engineer S Ravichandran and Assistant Town Planning Officer K. Sathya used earth movers to demolish Amman Kovil, Bannari Amman Kovil, Angala Parameswari, Karupparayan Kovil, Muneeswaran Kovil and a few other temples.

Six of the idols have been given away to public who had assured the officials to take care of them while one has been kept at the corporation office.

In 2020, some 2,400 families were moved from the tank bund after demolishing their houses for encroachment of the lake, and alternative housing was provided to them in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board projects.

According to the corporation, the demolished temples were built on the northern bund of the tank which was deemed as encroached land.

Author and political commentator  Ratan Sharda, wrote on Twitter, “All #temples are encroachments. The same was the Mughal view. Thanks for reminding.”

The state of Tamil Nadu is infamous for encroachment of Hindu temple lands. Hindu organizations have protested against the demolition asking why the government bulldozes temples swiftly while not taking any actions against illegal structures of other religions.

Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) condemned the demolition of temples and protested in Gandhi Park on Wednesday (July 14).

The Hindu Munnani also protested the demolition of temples and has demanded alternate land for shifting the temples and idols.
