Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, the woman who laid the foundations of a healthy Tamil Nadu

At a time when it was tough for women to make their mark in public space, one woman from Tamil Nadu broke barriers after barriers and finally shattered the glass ceilings.

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, was the first Indian woman legislator, a campaigner of women’s and children’s rights; and the driving force behind one of the biggest cancer institute’s in India – the Adyar Cancer Institute which treats nearly 80,000 cancer patients a year.

Muthulakshmi had many firsts to her name

She was the first woman to get into a total men’s college, Maharajas College

She was the first and the only woman candidate in the Medical College 1907.

She was the first woman to choose surgery – and ace it!

She was the first woman house surgeon in the Government Maternity and Ophthalmic Hospital.

She was the first woman legislator (MLA) in British India.

She became the first Alderwoman of the Madras Corporation in 1937

She was the first woman Chairperson of the State Social Welfare Advisory Board in 1954

She was the first woman Deputy President of the Legislative Council.

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy was born on the 30th of July 1886, in the princely state of Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, the daughter of Devdasi Chandrammal and Narayanaswamy Iyer.

In those days, it was quite a scandal when her father married her mother, as she was from the Devadasi Community, and their family was ostracised.

She was extremely stubborn about what she wanted in life. She rebelled against her mother when she wanted to marry off her daughter at puberty. Muthulakshmi went on to study high school instead, much to the horror and protest of the parents of the boys studying there. When she applied for an MBBS in the Madras Medical College, the progressive Raja of Pudukottai overruled all objections and gave her permission as well as a scholarship to study.

In 1914 she married Dr T. Sundara Reddy, who promised to always respect her as an equal and never cross her wishes. Famous Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan is the son of Muthulakshmi Reddy’s brother Ramasamy.

Her family had a lot of influence on her life.

When she saw her mother struggle with her life because of her birth status (a Devadasi), it made her take a resolve to abolish the Devadasi system.

When she saw her 13 year old cousin die at childbirth, it sowed the seeds for when Muthulakshmi would go on to increase the legal age of marriage for women to 16.

When she saw her younger sister succumb to cancer, she decided to specialize in cancer. She went to London to study about it and came back to establish the Adyar Cancer Institute.

She also opened the ‘Avvai Home in Chennai’, where women can equip themselves with vocational courses that would make them self-sufficient. She opened hostels for Muslim girls and gave out scholarships for Harijan girls.Like most prolific personalities of her time, she was greatly influenced by Gandhi, Anne Besant and Sarojini Naidu. They convinced her to work to uplift the poor conditions of women belonging to minority and Dalit community.

A maternity benefit scheme launched in 1987 under her name still helps poor pregnant women. Under the MRMBS scheme, the Tamil Nadu government provides a nutritional kit to provide optimal nutrition for pregnant and lactating women and compensate for the wage loss during pregnancy.

Although several health-related schemes including National Rural Health Scheme, Tamil Nadu Health System Project, Tamil Nadu Medical Service Corporation, etc are in place, the MRMBS has been successful in bringing about the change in the desired target regarding maternal and infant mortality rates.

She was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government in 1956 for her distinguished service to the nation.

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy passed away in 1968, but her legacy has gone on to make people remember her as the woman who transformed the lives of scores of people.

Afghanistan to form National Resistance Movement to counter Taliban and its proxy Pakistan

As the attacks carried out by the Taliban with the support from Pakistan intensified, Afghanistan Vice-President Amrullah Saleh on Thursday (29 July) said that President Ashraf Ghani has announced the Afghan security forces led National Resistance Movement (NRM) that will lead the country’s fight against the Taliban.

The purpose of the NRM will be to involve and incorporate every Afghan village and community that has stood up against attacks by Taliban terrorists.

In a tweet sent by Saleh, he said, “Every Afgh village & community that have stoop up against Talib terror offensive hv bn & will be incorporated under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to be led by the ANDSF. It is already happening”. Prz @ashrafghani at JCMB. Afg won’t bow to Talib proxy or its backer.”.

In an earlier tweet, Saleh had pointed out the hypocrisy of Pakistan that wanted a billion dollars from the west to solve the problem of terrorism in Afghanistan.

Saleh in his tweet said, “Pak used to portray Waziristan as a lawless tribal land sending fighters & terrorists to Afg. Give us 10 digit $$ & we will fix it, GHQ/ISI used to demand frm the West. Now an awakened Waziristan has crushed that falsehood & openly echoes Afg voices. Higher lies fall harder,”.

Ghani has announced the formation of NRM at the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board Meeting (JCBM) in the Afghan Presidential Palace.

Expelled Catholic cardinal to be criminally charged for sexually assaulting a teenage boy

Former Roman Catholic cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick who was expelled by Pope Francis will be criminally charged with repeatedly sexually assaulting a teenage boy at the event, reports The New York Times.

McCarrick who is 91 years old has been charged with molesting a 16-year-old boy during a 1974 wedding reception and now has the distinction of becoming the highest-ranking U.S. Catholic official to be criminally prosecuted for sexually abusing a minor.

McCarrick was once an influential leader in the American Catholic Church but was expelled from the priesthood in 2019 after a Vatican investigation concluded and found him guilty of molesting both minors and adults.

It must be noted that despite strong and persistent rumors of sexual misconduct, McCarrick had risen through the church’s ranks, and in 2000 Pope John Paul II appointed him the archbishop of Washington, D.C.

Pope John Paul II who was canonized a saint in 2014 and had one of the longest reigns of any Pope in recent history was informed in numerous confirmed reports that McCarrick had slept with seminarians. However, he believed in McCarrick’s denials rather than the findings of a Vatican investigation.

But it was Benedict XVI, who was aware of McCarrick’s sinful acts and forced his retirement in 2016 but failed to order a full canonical inquiry after receiving still further allegations and it was Pope Francis who ultimately defrocked him in 2018.

The Catholic Church in the US now faces a daunting task for hiding the sexual abuses of its priests for several decades and perhaps is also liable along with McCarrick who is already facing several civil lawsuits from men who have accused him of sexual abuse decades ago.

However, the statute of limitations in those cases has expired, preventing criminal charges but now this defrocked priest will finally face justice as the statute of limitations in the state of Massachusetts was frozen when McCarrick left the state because he was not a state resident.

The victim on whose testimony McCarrick will finally be jailed had told the police that he was molested during his brother’s wedding reception on June 8, 1974, at Wellesley College in Massachusetts when McCarrick groped his genitals as they walked around campus before taking him into a small closet-like room and fondling him while saying prayers.

“Hindu” word removed from HR&CE dept board in Nagercoil, added after protest from Hindu leaders

In another controversial incident under the DMK government, the word “Hindu” was deleted from the Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowment department board of the Superintendent’s office in Nagercoil constituency.

Many Hindu leaders, activists, and common citizens have criticized the DMK government for Christianizing the Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowments Department after the news went viral on social media. They have questioned whether the DMK government will take control of Churches and Mosques as the board only has the “Religious Charitable and Endowments Department.” Following public outrage, Nagercoil Superintendent Office has modified the name to add the word ‘Hindu.’

Recently, controversial Christian Pastor George Ponnaiya had warned Hindus saying,” we (minorities) were 42% once and now we are 62% of the total population in Kanya Kumari. soon, our population will cross 70%. we will continue to increase our population and no one can stop it. we tell this as a warning to Hindus. we do not fear BJP or RSS. You cannot stop us.”

Danish Siddiqui was brutally murdered and his corpse mutilated by the Taliban inside a Mosque

As per reports, Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui did not get killed in a crossfire in Afghanistan but was “brutally murdered” by the Taliban after they verified his identity, according to a report published in Washington Examiner on Thursday (July 29).

Siddiqui was on assignment in Afghanistan when he died when clashes broke out between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.

After Siddiqui death was reported, the left media in India tried to whitewash his murder by not blaming the Taliban and said religion did not kill Danish Siddiqui but only a bullet. In fact, the ‘liberals’ had hailed the Taliban for expressing regret at killing Danish.

According to an eyewitness account, shrapnel had hit Siddiqui, and then he and his team went to a local mosque where he received first aid. However, when the Taliban got to know this information they attacked the mosque and local investigation give a clear indication the Taliban only attacked the mosque because of Siddiqui’s presence there..

“Siddiqui was alive when the Taliban captured him. The Taliban verified Siddiqui’s identity and then executed him, as well as those with him. The commander and the remainder of his team died as they tried to rescue him,” it said.

“While a widely circulated public photograph shows Siddiqui’s face recognisable, I reviewed other photographs and a video of Siddiqui’s body provided to me by a source in the Indian government that show the Taliban beat Siddiqui around the head and then riddled his body with bullets,” wrote the writer Micheal Rubin, who is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Once Siddiqui was captured by the Taliban they carried out a summary execution and then violated one of the basic tenets of Islam and mutilated his corpse.

Siddiqui had won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his coverage of the Rohingya crisis and he also had posted pictures of funeral pyres during the height of the second wave of coronavirus.

Left leaders and DMK MP take part in Chinese Communist Party 100th anniversary celebrations organized by China

On Tuesday (July 27), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India (CPI) Lok Sabha MP D Raja, DMK MP Dr. S. Senthilkumar and All India Forward Bloc central committee secretary G Devarajan participated in an online seminar hosted by Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong and CPC’s international department counsellor Du Xiaolin to mark the 100th anniversary of Chinese Communist Party.

The participation of the DMK and Communist leaders comes just an year after the Galwan Valley clashes in which 20 Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice protecting the border against Chinese incursions.

The event coincided with the visit of US secretary of state Antony Blinken’s maiden to India, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, foreign minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

A press release by the Chinese embassy said that China-India relations are significant to peace and prosperity of the region and the world at large and that the bilateral relations be viewed from a more comprehensive and long-term perspective.

The Chinese envoy during the virtual event said that they received more than 1,500 congratulatory messages and letters on the CPC’s centenary from over 600 political parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, and the All India Forward Bloc, etc.

CPI General Secretary D Raja confirmed his participation. On the other hand, DMK MP Senthilkumar has not even uttered a word about the issue.

Dalit Christians in TN stage protest against untouchability in Catholic Church, wants TN govt to pressurize Centre to consider Dalit Christians as SCs

A poster stuck by the Tamil Nadu Dalit Christians Movements Association about a protest being organized in Valluvar Kottam, Chennai on 26th July 2021 against the rampant untouchability practices by the Catholic Churches in the state has grabbed eyeballs.

The poster had various demands like appointment of priests and for other higher positions in the church be undertaken on the basis of percentage of population. It is to be noted that although 70% of the Catholic Christians are Dalits, only of the 18 Bishops from Tamil Nadu is from that community.

The poster also mentions about the demand for the formation of a separate welfare board for Dalit Christians by the Tamil Nadu government.

However, what has raised concerns is the demand of considering Dalit Christians as members of Scheduled Caste. One of the points in the poster asks the Tamil Nadu government to exert pressure on the Centre to include Dalit Christians in Scheduled Caste so that they can avail reservation benefits.

This has raised eyebrows as such a move would incentivize religious conversion which is already rampant due to illegal work of Christian missionaries.

As per the Constitution of India and Indian statute, Hindu persons eligible for reservation benefits, like those belonging to Scheduled Castes, cannot avail the same benefits if they convert to Christianity or Islam.

Para 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order outlines that no person who professes a religion different from Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist religion shall be deemed to be a member of a Scheduled Caste.

The Supreme Court in a 2015 ruling had said, “Once such a person ceases to be a Hindu and becomes a Christian, the social and economic disabilities arising because of Hindu religion cease and hence it is no longer necessary to give him protection and for this reason he is deemed not to belong to a scheduled caste.”

Annamalai: TN BJP to organize hunger strike on Aug 5 demanding Karnataka to drop Mekedatu dam project

“We will not allow the Karnataka government to even lay a brick in Mekedatu. On August 5, we will stage a hunger strike to demand that the Karnataka government stop building the dam,” stated Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai.

In his interview on July 29, he said,” Prime Minister Modi’s decision to give OBCs  27% reservation and the Economically Weaker Section 10% reservation in all India quota for medical admission is a major development. Many political dramas have been staged in Tamil Nadu for many years, with the All India quota in mind.”

He added that the Modi government told the Supreme Court in 2016 that it has “no objection to allocating 27 percent reservation to the OBC,” and that now the Supreme Court’s final judgment has been delivered, the Prime Minister has brought a law that can benefit Tamil Nadu students and OBCs across India.

According to Annamalai, the government’s move will benefit 5,500 students in the all-India quota, and Prime Minister Modi has done what Congress was hesitant to do all these years.

He further said,” The newly-appointed Chief Minister of Karnataka has said that the Mekedatu Dam will be built in Cauvery. This, of course, is painful; Reprehensible. The Union Water Resources Minister has said that the dam will not be allowed to be built. On behalf of the BJP, a hunger strike will be held in Tanjore on August 5 with the participation of 10,000 farmers, urging Karnataka to abandon the Mekedatu dam project. We will not allow the Karnataka government to lay even a single brick in Mekedatu.”

National Gallery of Australia to return stolen Indian artifacts taken from temples

As per reports published in Swarjaya, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) on Wednesday (29 July) announced it will return 14 artifacts to the Indian Government.

The works of art being repatriated include 13 objects connected to art dealer Subhash Kapoor through Art of the Past and one acquired from art dealer William Wolff. At present Kapoor is in prison for allegedly running a $100 million international smuggling racket.

The works repatriated include six bronze or stone sculptures, a brass processional standard, a painted scroll, and six photographs, the NGA said in a press release.

“Another three sculptures sourced from Art of the Past have also been removed from the collection. Further research will be undertaken to identify their place of origin before they are repatriated,” it added.

“The decision to return the works is the culmination of years of research, due diligence and an evolving framework for decision-making that includes both legal principles and ethical considerations,” the NGA said.

NGA Director Nick Mitzevich said,“With these developments, provenance decision-making at the National Gallery will be determined by an evidence-based approach evaluated on the balance of probabilities, anchored in robust legal and ethical decision-making principles and considerations,”.

“As the first outcome of this change, the Gallery will be returning 14 objects from the Indian art collection to their country of origin. This is the right thing to do, its culturally responsible and the result of collaboration between Australia and India. We are grateful to the Indian Government for their support and are pleased we can now return these culturally significant objects,” Mitzevich added.

Mitzevich said the Gallery would continue its research, including for the Asian art collection, and resolve the status of any works of concern, and Indian High Commissioner to Australia, Manpreet Vohra, welcomed the decision by the Australian Government and the National Gallery to return the works. and said, “The Government of India is grateful for this extraordinary act of goodwill and gesture of friendship from Australia. “These are outstanding pieces: their return will be extremely well received by the Government and people of India,”.

Swarajya spoke to Vijay Kumar, founder of India Pride Project, a volunteer group that was behind the identification of the stolen murthis.

“The latest round of restitutions from the NGA mark an end to our decade long battle with them for transparency and accountability of their (Subhash) Kapoor acquisitions. India owes a lot to journalists Jason Felch and Michaela Boland whose contributions were critical for this result.”, Vijay Kumar said.

‘Museums know that India is serious about pursuing it’s stolen art unlike in the past and we hope other museums, collectors, auction houses and dealers realise this. Looted Indian art is no longer fair game.’, he said.

‘The looting is not particular only to Tamil Nadu but this restitution shows that the smuggling is prevalent in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra and Telangana.”

“Our heritage is at risk pan-India. We hope the center and states acknowledge this and pursue the heritage crimes seriously.”
