First batch of Multi-Mode Hand Grenades handed over to Indian Army

The first batch of Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG), manufactured by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) following Transfer of Technology from Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), was handed over to the Indian Army in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Nagpur, Maharashtra on August 24, 2021.

The grenade is not just more lethal, but is safer to use. It has a distinctive design that gives flexibility of employment in both defensive (fragmentation) and offensive (stun) modes. It has a highly accurate delay time, very high reliability in usage and safe for carriage. These new grenades will replace Grenade No 36 of World War I vintage design, which had been continuing in service till date.

The EEL had signed a contract with Ministry of Defence on October 01, 2020 to supply 10 lakh modern hand grenades for Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The deliveries would be spread over two years from the bulk production clearance, which was accorded to EEL in March 2021. The first order has been delivered within five months.

The EEL had taken the technology from DRDO in 2016, absorbed it successfully while maintaining very high quality in detonics. Extensive trials were successfully undertaken by the Indian Army and Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) in 2017-18 in plains, deserts and high altitude over summer & winter.

Chairman of EEL S N Nuwal handed over a scale replica of MMHG to the Raksha Mantri to mark the first delivery of ammunition from the private sector. Chief of the Army Staff General M M Naravane, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy and DG Infantry Lt Gen A K Samantra were among those present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh termed the handing over of MMHG as a shining example of the increasing collaboration between the public & private sectors and a big step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing. “Today is a memorable day in the history of Indian defence sector. Our private industry is coming of age when it comes to defence production. It is an important milestone not only in the field of defence manufacturing, but also in achieving ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’ as envisioned by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,” he said. The Raksha Mantri lauded DRDO & EEL for the speedy delivery of the order amidst COVID-19 restrictions and hoped of a faster delivery of the next lot.

The Defence Minister listed out the measures undertaken by the Government to transform the defence sector into a self-reliant industry which can cater to the present and the future needs of the Armed Forces. These include setting up of Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; formulation of draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP) 2020; earmarking around 64 per cent of its modernisation funds under capital acquisition budget for 2021-22 for procurement from domestic companies; notifying two Positive Indigenisation Lists of over 200 defence items to promote self-reliance & defence exports; Corporatisation of Ordnance Factory Board (OFB); increasing FDI limit from 49 to 74 per cent under automatic route and beyond 74 per cent through government route and according top priority to ‘Buy {Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)}’ category for capital procurement.

Rajnath Singh made special mention of another initiative taken by the Government, i.e., Technology Transfer to Industries by DRDO. Describing the measure as the backbone of the defence industry, he lauded DRDO for being an incubator which is undertaking free of cost transfer of technologies as well as providing access to testing facilities and over 450 patents. This has not only enabled the Industry to use ready-to-use technologies, but has also saved time, energy and money, he said.

The Defence Minister also underlined the importance of Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) saying that it aims to achieve self-reliance and foster innovation & technology development in defence and aerospace sectors by engaging Industries including MSMEs, start-ups, individual innovators, R&D institutes and academia. Under this initiative, the problems being faced by the Armed Forces, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and OFB are identified and brought before entrepreneurs, MSMEs, start-ups and innovators through Defence India Startup Challenge (DISC) to find solutions.

Rudra Thandavam sets pants on fire, trailer hints film being about misuse of PCR Act and religious conversion

The trailer of Mohan G Kshatriyan’s latest film ‘Rudra Thandavam’ was released yesterday (August 24) following the release of the film’s poster.

Actor Richard Rishi, a constant in Mohan’s ventures, plays the lead character of Rudra Prabhakaran, a police officer dealing with drug trafficking. Gautham Vasudev Menon, who has of late been donning the actor’s hat, seems to be the lead antagonist playing the role of a Communist.

The trailer gives a slight hint of what the film is about. The story seems to revolve around a dutiful police officer who gets slapped with a false under Protection of Civil Rights Act (PCR Act) and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act (shortened as SC/ST Atrocities Act) for taking action against an accused involved in drug crime. It also touches around the larger subject of rampant illegal religious conversion among Scheduled Castes as Radha Ravi, who seems to be playing the role of a public prosecutor, mentions in the trailer that the PCR Act does not apply to those who get converted to Christianity.

Because of the relevance and the contentious nature of the subject, the film has already set the expectations high. The dialogue of Gautham Menon “Only I will decide who does politics and hold protests on what matter. I shouldn’t ever see you on any stage. If I do, I will f****** burn you to death and hoist a veera vanakkam kodi (comrade salute) flag on the same spot” has already received rave response.

Many have lauded the director for taking such a bold subject in an industry which otherwise romanticizes Communism and plight of Scheduled Castes.

Organisers at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to allow Afghan National Flag as a symbol of “solidarity and peace”

In a show of solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, it has been decided that the Afghan flag rejected by the Taliban will be used as a symbol of “solidarity and peace” at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games kicks off on Tuesday night in Japan, reports CNN.

The 16th Summer Paralympics was also delayed due to the pandemic and President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Andrew Parsons said he was determined the Paralympics would be held safely.

“One of the questions I am asked very often is, ‘can we have safe Games?’ and the answer is yes, we would not be here if we did not believe we could deliver safe Games,” he said.

Parsons also confirmed that Afghanistan’s flag will be incorporated into the opening ceremony parade despite Afghan athletes pulling out of the Games due to flights being canceled from the country after the Taliban seized the capital Kabul, with thousands of people trying to flee the new regime.

“We will include the Afghanistan flag in the ceremony in a sign of solidarity and we have invited the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative here to act as the flagbearer,” Parsons told reporters.

“It is important to highlight that as it is a message of solidarity and peace that we send to the world,”. “We would like to have them here, unfortunately it is not possible, but they will be here in spirit, he added,.”

The Taliban who are against women going outside without male supervision has led to many sportswomen from Afghanistan not participate in this event for fear of being punished under the Islamic Sharia law.

In a statement to CNN Sport last week, the IPC said it was “supportive of the practice of sport as a basic human right.”

“Every individual should have the possibility to play sport and no-one should be discriminated against because of their disability, gender, sexual preference, race or religion,” it added.

Moplah rioters to be removed from Dictionary of Martyr’s of India’s Freedom Struggle

The Ministry of Culture and the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) is set to remove the Moplah Rebellion leaders Variamkunnath Kunhamed Haji, Ali Musaliar, and 387 other so-called “Moplah martyrs” from the Dictionary of Martyrs of India’s Freedom Struggle.

The dictionary is jointly published by the Ministry of Culture and the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and after a three-member panel, set up the ICHR reviewed the entries in the fifth volume of the dictionary, it has reportedly stated that the 1921 rebellion was never part of the independence struggle but was a fundamentalist religious movement focused on forced conversion of Hindus to Islam.

The panel noted that none of the slogans raised by the freedom fighters was in favour of nationalism and anti-British in content but it was an elaborate religious riot in the name of Islam and the Moplah rebellion was an attempt to establish a Caliphate.

According to The Hindu newspaper, if the Moplah Muslims had succeeded, a Caliphate would have been established in the Malabar region India would have ended up losing that part from its territory.

The panel further concluded that Haji was a rioter who established a Sharia court and beheaded a large number of Hindus because they were non-believers.

The committee also revealed that a large number of alleged “Moplah martyrs,” who were awaiting trial died due to diseases such as cholera and natural causes and cannot be treated as martyrs and only a few were executed by the government after a court trial, the panel noted.

Taliban gives August 31 as ultimatum to US or suffer consequences

taliban india

In a strange turn of events, the Taliban have given the United States ultimatum until August 31 to leave Afghanistan or suffer the consequences.

In a stark warning given to US President Joe Biden, the Taliban made it very clear that it will not tolerate the presence of  US troops past August 31 as America struggles to evacuate its citizens and its Afghan allies.

Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen said, “It’s a red line. President Biden announced that on 31 August they would withdraw all their military forces. So if they extend it that means they are extending occupation while there is no need for that,”.

Shaheen further added, “If the US or UK were to seek additional time to continue evacuations – the answer is no. Or there would be consequences,”.

“It will create mistrust between us. If they are intent on continuing the occupation it will provoke a reaction,” Shaheen said in remarks given to UK broadcaster Sky News.

On Sunday, Joe Biden admitted that the evacuation was going to be “hard and painful” and that “a lot could still go wrong” as he faces mounting criticism from the Republicans and members of his own party.

Meanwhile, Britain has urged the US to extend its evacuation effort in Kabul past the August 31 deadline as forces loyal to Ahmad Massoud, son of the lion of Panjshir Ahmad Shah Massoud have said that they will resist the Taliban to the end.

Police nab one Mohammad Nasir in Thanjavur for indulging in voyeurism, had filmed man’s wife & daughter bathing

Police in Thanjavur have arrested a former police officer’s son identified as Mohammad Nasir who had indulged in voyeuristic pleasure by filming his neighbour’s daughters and wife bathing.

Venkatesan hailing from Thanjavur, is married and has two daughters. His wife had told him that something was gleaming inside the bathroom and asked him to have a look at it.

To their shock, they found a webcam with a power bank connected to it to keep it so that it works even if there is a power cut.

Venkatesan immediately rushed to the police station to register a complaint. Investigation revealed that Mohammad Nasir who was residing next to Venkatesh’s house, had installed a camera in Venkatesh’s bathroom to watch his wife and daughters bathing.

This is not the first time Mohammad Nasir was caught indulging in voyeurism. He was earlier caught watching Venkatesh’s wife and daughter taking bath from the terrace a few years ago. When Venkatesan confronted Nasir back then, the latter’s father who was in police service at that time had used his power to intimidate Venkatesan.

Nasir made an alternative to plan to continue his voyeurism. The house next to Venkatesh’s bathroom had been vacant. The owner of that house had given the keys to Nasir to show it to prospective tenants. Using this opportunity, he took off the bathroom glass of the empty house and mounted a webcam on Venkatesh’s bathroom. He thus began to fulfill his lust by watching his wife and daughter take bath.

Nasir confessed all these during the police interrogation.
