Political bias of AK Rajan Committee Report gets called out

The DMK government in Tamil Nadu had constituted a committee headed by former Justice AK Rajan to study the impact of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The committee which submitted its report to Chief Minister MK Stalin on September 14 makes a case for doing away with NEET claiming that it puts rural government school tamil medium students at a disadvantage.

However, many have pointed out that the report is not at all objective and has been prepared to buttress the ruling DMK government’s politics over NEET.

Dr. Sumanth C Raman had posted on his social media that the report makes selective usage of data and makes several conclusions without evidence.

He pointed out that the data on students from government schools who got MBBS seats pre and post NEET is selectively put out. While every data is from 2010-2020, the data for this particular header alone is from 2014.

“Why is the trend between 2017-18 and 2020-21 not given any importance at all? Many of the parameters seem to be heading towards pre NEET days but the committee does not even mention this. eg.FC as % of OC from 23% to 11%, 15. More students from TN have been clearing NEET with each passing year. This does not even get a mention. Why no data on this?”, he pointed out.

He also asked how did the committee decide that 99% of students who qualified through NEET took coaching.

The report makes several blanket and unsubstantiated claims that doctors will not be available at all in future in Tamil Nadu if NEET was to stay.

BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai said that the report fails to disclose crucial data for the years 2010-2014 on the number of government school children who secured admissions to government medical colleges.

BJP Tamil Nadu Spokesperson SG Suryah pointed out that the former Judge AK Rajan has his bookshelf decorated with pictures of Karunanidhi and MK Stalin. “It would be foolish to expect that a report prepared by committee headed by such a person would be devoid of political bias”, he said.

He added that the committee seems to have given a report that was dictated by the DMK government and called for a complete boycott of the biased report.

Indu Makkal Katchi took a jibe saying that the AK Rajan committee report is a fiction like a Tamil movie script.

Sriram Seshadri, a TV debater and political commentator said that the committee fixed the outcome and worked backwards which explains the several contradictions and wilful missing data.

India At 75: A Tale Of Contradictions

Some say, from where India sat at the stroke of midnight on August 15th 1947 to where it stands now after almost 75 years of independence, we have come a very long way. This statement is not incorrect. We have developed rapidly, brought millions out of poverty, steadily increased our stature in the world, sent men to space, won historic wars and most importantly remained a democracy throughout. A mere 16.7% of our population were literate and the average life expectancy was 32 in 1951. Now our literacy stands at 74% and life expectancy is 69 years. In 1951 for every 1000 infants born, 147 never made it beyond the age of 1. Now, the number is a mere 32. These kind of giant strides are visible in almost all spheres of development be it economy, social, human development etc.

So, as a 29-year-old, born in the 1990’s these stories fascinate me. It makes me proud of what our nation has achieved in the past 75 years. However, these remain stories in my eyes. This may be because our generation has not lived through the transformation and it is difficult to feel these intangible achievements, first hand. This is coupled with the fact that we are witness to certain tangible realities from the ground today. What we see, is what we endure day in day out and ultimately that is what shapes our reality of India.

For instance, can we avail a government service from a local body in real time, without the need to wait or pay bribes? Can we enter a police station to lodge a complaint without any second thought about the nature of treatment inside the station and awkward questions that will be posed to us? Can we approach the courts and expect speedy justice if our fundamental rights are taken away? Are tenders awarded to the worthiest, without any corruption? How is it that 1000’s of people under trial are rotting in jail, while VIP’s get bail within minutes? Critics may call these questions pessimistic in nature, but nobody can shy away from the bitter reality. From birth to death, from getting a certificate/license to even getting a place in a college we need to know people or splash money. For that matter, one wonders whether there is even dignity in death when we need to know people or pay money to get a proper place in the burial ground, without hassles.

Now, all of the above is not a figment of my imagination. Various reports and surveys support these assertions. For instance, let us consider the latest corruption and bribery survey carried out by the renowned International NGO Transparency International. India is characterized with the highest rates of bribery and use of influence/personal contacts to get access to public services in Asia. Out of the people surveyed around 42% had experienced bribery with the police and 46% of the people used personal contacts to get access to public service. A similar study in 2019 pointed out that 1 in every 2 Indians had paid a bribe in the preceding year. At the macro level, various studies (between 2009-11) pointed out that India’s black money bucket was estimated at around 71-79% of our GDP.

With so much glaringly wrong in our motherland, how can we look otherwise? How can we be happy by stating that we have come a long way, when access to basic services need influence or bribe? How many big politicians have we seen convicted for corruption? The bigger joke is that the rare ones who are convicted for corruption, still continue to play a part in active politics either from prison and through proxies.  One argument put forth by intellectuals is that “Why do people bribe officials, to get their work done? It is the people who are morally corrupt.”

This line of argument amuses me. The system in the first place should be transparent, fair, unbiased, technology driven and efficient. Unfortunately, the system is none of the above mentioned and is instead a cobweb of complexities and a difficult maze to navigate. It is pitting our fellow citizens against one another, in a survival of the fittest framework. You can follow the rules, wait for a long time in the line and the system will work at its own pace. Else, you can skip the line, clear the clutter, get your job done with a few bucks. The important point to be noted is that, if there was only one option available for all citizens, i.e. to wait in the line for an inefficient system, people may still choose to wait. The problem here is that there is a class of elite, influential, VIP’s who can game the system or buy the system to skip the line. In fact, there are two lines. One for the ordinary common man (Line 1) and another for those with power, influence or money (Line 2). So, the system in the current form irritates and, in a way, incentivizes the common man to search for means to skip the line, or in other words move from line 1 to line 2. Now, tell me. Are the people at fault or the system and those who run the system?

Indeed, India’s achievements on the face of it are phenomenal. With a country torn apart by partition, characterized by large scale hunger, homelessness in 1947 we have come long way. However, our country and our story is peculiar. We are capable of sending people to the moon, but our High Courts make mathematical errors in cases of public importance. We are the largest democracy in the world, but politicians continue to pay cash for votes. We are a country with more than 1.3 billion people, but unable to find 10 capable men and women, train them to win gold medals in Olympics. We are a 2 trillion economy and aim to be 5 trillion one soon, but don’t have the will to solve massive corruption which affects our citizens. We are unable to solve the most pressing issues that plague a common man’s day to day life. Who do we blame for this chaos? Who is responsible for this large scale corruption? Is it the people, as some suggest? Is it the system? Is it the people who run the system? Or is it God? In fact, even our Gods have 2 ways to meet him/her. One normal darshan and another a paid, quick, influential close to God special darshan. This is India, this is the tale of contradictions.

Whereabouts of Taliban founders Mullah Baradar and Mullah Akhundzada unknown, presumed murdered

The whereabouts of Afghanistan Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Baradar are still unknown as there is an open power struggle within the Taliban ranks. Also, the whereabouts of the Taliban’s spiritual leader Haibatullah Akhundzada remains unknown and some have speculated he might be even dead.

UK-based magazine The Spectator on Monday (September 20) reported that a recent clash during the government formation between the Baradar faction and the Haqqani network may have led to the disappearance of the co-founder of the Taliban and the former has now most likely emerged as the “principal loser”.

It is well known that the Haqqani Network is one of the major proxies of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) which did not want Baradar to take power in Afghanistan and threw its weight behind the Haqqanis when ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed travelled to Kabul to smooth things over.

Gen Hameed is the same senior Pakistan military officer who as per reports was shot by his wife after she caught him with another woman Aroosa Alam who is also well known in India.

It has emerged that the Mullah Baradar and Mullah Akhundzada camp wanted to make some concessions in order to gain legitimacy but after the backing of the Pakistan Army, all key positions have now been the hardline Haqqani network and it wants to extend Jihad to central Asia and India.

According to a report published in The Spectator, both sides clashed in early September which saw “furniture as well as large thermos flasks full of hot green tea thrown around”.

Haqqani network leader Khalil-ul-Rahman Haqqani actually rose from his chair and began punching Baradar after the latter had pushed for an “inclusive” cabinet that included non-Taliban leaders and ethnic minorities, which would be more acceptable to the rest of the world.

To quell the rumours of his Baradar disappearance,  a meeting of tribal leaders was held who are supporting him, but was also forced to release a video message on the state-run TV network controlled by the Taliban which many thought “looked like a hostage video”, The Spectator reported.

However, the whereabouts of Akhundzada who was supposed to be the Amir-ul-Momineen (Commander of the faithful) is not known. “He has not been seen or heard from for some time, and there are many rumors that he is dead,” reported The Spectator.

It must be noted that the Taliban had kept the death of its first leader Mullah Omar a secret for few years and there is a vacuum at the top which could lead to civil war.

It must be noted that Mullah Baradar spent nearly ten years in a Pakistani prison where he was allegedly tortured by the ISI. When he was released from prison, it was he who led the Doha talks and try to project a moderate image of the Taliban.

On the other hand, the Haqqanis have been responsible for numerous suicide attacks and it is one of its Modus Operandi to terrorise opponents and also they are very close to Pakistan’s security apparatus and take their name from the Darul Uloom Haqqania madrassa near Islamabad.

PLA officers spotted again in PoK, in touch with guides and Islamic terrorists in the area

Information has emerged that a few Chinese Army officers are in touch with guides and Islamic terrorists presently operating in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK), which led to the Indian security agencies assess the situation in a top-level meeting.

As per a News18 report, “Chinese Army officers along with cartographers and local interpreters have been interacting with migrant Kashmiris presently in PoK, especially those who are working as guides and ex-terrorists who have good knowledge of the topography of Kashmir valley, Ladakh and Jammu regions,”.

Intelligence agencies are keeping an eye on such activities and are aware of the intentions of Pakistan and the Chinese Army, after inputs received from the ground.

However, the presence of Chinese Army officials is not the first instance in PoK because in September last year Chinese Army officials were also spotted at various posts along with Pakistan’s side of the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Army had noticed the presence of senior People’s Liberation Army (PLA) officers close to forward posts in the Nowgam sector in North Kashmir and Chinese troops cane to create infrastructure along the LoC.

Last week, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recovered 6 Chinese hand Grenades from a sandbag placed on the divider of the road in Bemina. “The alacrity of troops averted an incident on the busy highway. Considering the huge rush on the highway, the grenades were not demolished in-situ,” the CRPF had said.

Sidhu chants ‘Allahu Akbar’ as new CM Charanjit Singh Channi takes office, Sikh groups upset

After the ouster of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh after a long and protracted political battle led by Navjot Singh Sidhu, a new controversy has erupted after a video went viral on social media wherein, one could clearly hear Sidhu chant the Islamic words of Nara-e-Takbir Allahu Akbar in the presence of newly elected CM Charanjit Singh Channi.

The elevation of Charanjit Singh Channi to the seat of CM of Punjab is now been viewed as a political masterstroke because he is a Dalit. However, in Sikhism, there is no concept of caste because all are equal and now Sikh groups are upset that Sidhu instead of chanting the Sikh Jaikara “Jo Bole So Nihal Sat Sri Akal”.

Now The Chhattisgarh Sikh Sangathan chief Amarjeet Chhabra in a letter written to the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Govind Singh Longowal said that Sidhu has violated the Sikh religion norms.

Amarjeet Chhabra said, “Sidhu is guilty of misconduct and has shown disrespect to the turban. He should be summoned by the Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal authority) and be declared as Tankhaiya (religious punishment) on the basis of the slogans shouted by Sidhu during his recent rallies,”.

One Twitter user said, “Navjot Singh Sidhu: “Nara e Takbir. Allah ho akbar.” (“Slogan – Allah is the greatest.”) This is being done to provoke Hindus. Not sure if Sikhs are okay with it. In the background is a painting of Maharaja Ranjit Singh who converted Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque into stables,”.

It must be noted that slogans like “Nara e Takbir. Allah ho akbar” are used by Muslims when they claim victory over the infidels and Sidhu had no regard of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh whose portrait was on the background.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has been regarded by many as an agent provocateur and former CM Amarinder Singh even called him a security threat to the state and the nation because of his proxsimity to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Naizi and the Inter-Service Intelligence.

Taliban bans live telecast of Indian Premier League for ‘anti-Islam contents’

After the Taliban took over Afghanistan last month and again inforced the puritanical Sharia law in the country, the new Islamic regime has decided to ban the telecast of the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in Afghanistan.

Fans of this T20 league will not get to see any of the games broadcast live because of possible ‘anti-Islam contents’ that could be aired during the programming and could corrupt people’s morals.

However, top Afghanistan cricketers like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb ur Rahman are taking part in IPL 2021 as the Islamic regime has banned most forms of entertainment and women have been completely banned from playing any sport.

Former Afghanistan Cricket Board media manager and journalist, M Ibrahim Momand, in a tweet said, “Afghanistan national  will not broadcast the @IPL as usual as it was reportedly banned to live the matches resumed tonight due to possible anti-islam contents, girls dancing & the attendence of barred hair women in the by Islamic Emirates of the Taliban. #CSKvMI

When the Taliban had banned women from playing cricket the future of Afghanistan’s participation in Test matches is now under scrutiny with International Cricket Council regulations, as it is required for nations to have an active women’s team.

Earlier, Cricket Australia had threatened to cancel a historic maiden Test between the two countries to be played in November after a senior Taliban official said it was ‘not necessary’ for women to play.
