More than 4 crore unorganized workers registered in India’s first National Database on Unorganized Workers

In less than two months, more than 4 crores (40 million plus) workers have registered at the e-Shram portal. Sharing this information in a tweet message, Minister for Labour and Employment, Bhupender Yadav said that by registering, the unorganized workers will be able to get the benefits of government schemes easily.

Workers in diverse occupations such as construction, apparel manufacturing, fishing, gig and platform work, street vending, domestic work, agriculture and allied, transport sector have registered at the portal.  In some of these sectors an overwhelming proportion of migrant workers are also engaged. All unorganized workers including migrant workers can now take the benefits of various social security and employment-based schemes through registration at the e-Shram portal.

As per live data, 4.09 crore workers have registered on the portal. Of these around 50.02% beneficiaries are female and 49.98% are male. It is encouraging that equivalent proportion of men and women have been part of this drive.

As per the latest data, the states of Odisha, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are at the fore front of this initiative with highest number of registrations, as depicted by the graph below. However, putting this number into perspective must be with caution. Smaller states and union territories (UTs) understandably have lesser number of registered workforce. Also, this drive needs to gain momentum in states and UTs such as Meghalaya, Manipur, Manipur, Goa and Chandigarh.

A substantial proportion of registration has been facilitated by the CSC as depicted in the graph above. Interestingly, in certain states like Kerala and Goa and in North-East India, Meghalaya and Manipur a greater proportion of individuals have self-registered in the portal. Similar is the case with most Union Territories like Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Andaman & Nicobar and Ladakh.

After registration at e-SHRAM Portal, the unorganised workers shall receive a digital e-SHRAM card and they can update their profiles/ particulars through portal or mobile app. They will have a Universal Account Number (on eSHRAM Card) that will be acceptable across the country and now they will not be required to register at different places for obtaining social security benefits. If a worker is registered at the e-Shram portal and meets with an accident, he/she will be eligible for Rs 2.0 Lakh on death or permanent disability and Rs 1.0 lakh on partial disability.

Taliban cracks down on Baloch militants and Uighur rebels

China and Pakistan have succeeded in making Taliban to launch a crack down on Balochistan separatist groups and Uighur rebels as part of their efforts to protect China’s Belt and Road Initiative projects in Pakistan.

These separatist groups are reportedly operating from their sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

In return, the Taliban is asking for economic cooperation and humanitarian assistance from Islamabad and Beijing. They are also lobbying for sanctions to be removed.

Balochistan separatist groups are worried about the increasing number of arrests of their members in Afghan provinces of Nimroz and Kandahar by the Taliban. Taliban insurgents in Kandahar have been forcing Baloch families to vacate their houses, and are commandeering their vehicles. They believe that the arrested members would be handed over to Pakistan authorities.

“The Taliban should ensure the protection of Baloch refugees like a neighbor, instead of protecting the interests of Pakistan,” Domki who is a former Balochistan provincial minister was quoted saying in a report by the Nikkei.

Separatist groups have been attacking Chinese Belt and Road Projects in Pakistan’s largest province Balochistan as Chinese and Pakistani authorities have been plundering the resource-rich region.

After the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, there was uncertainty over whether the Islamist militant group would take action on the Baloch separatist groups harbouring in the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In February last year when the Taliban signed a deal with the U.S. after months of peace talks, the group committed to preventing militant groups from using its territory to threaten the security of other countries.

YouTuber arrested for releasing documentary exposing unknown sleazy side of EVR

The Tamil Nadu police have arrested Dakshinamurthy alias Seethaiyin Mainthan, a YouTuber and a Tamil nationalist ideologue for releasing a documentary that allegedly exposes the lesser known and hidden facts about E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (EVR) who is hailed as ‘Periyar’ by his followers.

The two-part documentary bases most of its evidences on the book titled “Tamizhar Thalaivar” written by Samy Chidambaranar who wrote the book under the supervision of EVR himself and was published in the year 1939

The documentary which chronicles the life of EVR based on sound research is titled as “The Real Face Of EVR”. The two parts are about EVR’s life before and after he entered politics respectively.

In the first part, Seethayin Mainthan exposes the fact that EVR frequented brothels and had sexual relations with prostitutes. He quotes from the book and mentions that EVR used to take prostitutes to the banks of Cauvery river to have fun at night and would later only in the morning.

He cites that when EVR left home in 25 after a feud with his parents, his father Venkatta Nayakkar apparently searched for him in houses of ‘high-class’ prostitutes who work in drama companies.

Seethayin Mainthan also quotes several instance from the book establishing that EVR was a heavy drunkard and a pimp.

Recently, Seethayin Mainthan had given an interview to a YouTube channel named Zhagaram Voice in which he rips apart EVR and other proponents of the Dravidian ideology.

This video had gone viral and is believed to have been the reason behind the government’s action.

Many on social media questioned the double standards of the DMK government for witch-hunting political opponents and suppressing freedom of speech and expression.

Cash-strapped Taliban wants Iran to allow the use of Chabahar port to transport fruits to India

The Taliban which took over the state of affairs in Afghanistan in August has asked Iran to restart the export of dry fruits, a major revenue source via their India-developed Chabahar port.

Iran’s Tasnim News is reporting that Tehran is in the process of evaluating the Taliban’s proposals for allowing the transit of Afghanistan’s trade cargoes and export of fresh and dried fruits to India via the Chabahar route.

Representatives of both countries signed a comprehensive trade agreement last week as the Taliban submitted the detailed plan wherein Iran and the Taliban agreed to maintain round-the-clock operations at the Islam Qala-Dogarun border crossing and develop the land routes at the border crossing.

As of now, Iran has only agreed in principle to allow Afghan traders to export fresh and dried fruits to India which is one of the most important sources of revenue as Afghanistan has witnessed a bumper dry fruit harvest this year.

But now the cash-strapped Taliban which controls Afghanistan is in a bind because when they took power they had banned the export and imports to India, but now they are forced to rethink their stand due to mounting economic pressure because India imports around 85 per cent of its dry fruits from Afghanistan.

The sale of dry fruits sees a massive upward trend in September, just before the beginning of the festival seasons of Durga Puja and Diwali as Indians consume dried raisins, walnuts, almonds, figs, pine nuts, pistachios, dried apricot and fresh fruits such as apricot, cherry, watermelon, and a few medicinal herbs.

In the previous Afghan regime, fresh fruits were transported to India from Afghanistan via the air cargo corridor, which was stopped due to political uncertainty. Now the Afghan traders have to rely on the country’s Torkham and Chaman borders routes to the Wagah border via Pakistan, but it takes a lot of time and perishable items such as fresh fruits can go bad.

Also, the land route depends on the whim of Pakistani authorities who are known for asking bribe money for allowing the trucks to cross the border as hundreds of tonnes of bumper fruit crops remained stranded at the border crossing points with Pakistan for eventual exports for weeks and finally got rotten.

BCCI president Ganguly extends invitation to PCB head Ramiz Raja to watch IPL final, Raja refuses

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 edition came to an end and the trophy was lifted Chennai Super Kings (CSK), beating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Dubai on Friday (October 15), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had extended the invitation to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja during the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) Executive Board meeting.

At the ACC meeting, Ganguly extended an invitation to Ramiz Raja to watch which the PCB Chairman refused since Pakistani cricketers are not allowed to play in the IPL which is a matter of great frustration and anger because the IPL is the most lucrative cricket tournament in the world.

Also, it has also been reported that both heads of their respective cricket boards discussed several areas of common interest for both during this meeting as India and Pakistan will face each other on October 24 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 is concerned, and the much-awaited game will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Recently Ramiz Raja gave a statement in which he said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the power to destroy Pakistan cricket because PCB receives 50 per cent of its funding from the ICC, and the latter is funded 90 per cent  by BCCI’.

The last time the two teams had faced off against each other was in 2016 T20 World Cup on March 19, and India had defeated Pakistan with 6 wickets to spare in that encounter.

“Devoid of ground reality, methodology unscientific”: Centre on India’s ranking in Global Hunger Report 2021

In a blistering statement, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD) came down heavy on the publishing agencies of the Global Hunger Report saying that the report was devoid of ground reality and facts raising concerns over the methodology to ascertain the rankings.

“It is shocking to find that the Global Hunger Report 2021 has lowered the rank of India on the basis of FAO estimate on proportion of undernourished population, which is found to be devoid of ground reality and facts and suffers from serious methodological issues. “, the Ministry said.

“The publishing agencies of the Global Hunger Report, Concern Worldwide and Welt Hunger Hilfe, have not done their due diligence before releasing the report. The methodology used by FAO is unscientific. They have based their assessment on the results of a ‘four question’ opinion poll, which was conducted telephonically by Gallup.” the statement further added.

The scientific measurement of undernourishment would require measurement of weight and Height, whereas the methodology involved here is based on Gallup poll based on pure telephonic estimate of the population.

“The report completely disregards Government’s massive effort to ensure food security of the entire population during the covid period, verifiable data on which are available.” the Ministry said.

The Ministry pointed out that the opinion poll does not have a single question on whether the respondents received any food support from the Government or other sources raising doubts over the representativeness of the data.

“It is noted with surprise, from the FAO report ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021’, that other four countries of this region – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, have not been affected at all by Covid-19 pandemic induced loss of job/business and reduction in income levels, rather they have been able to improve their position on the indicator ‘proportion of undernourished population’ by 4.3%, 3.3%, 1.3% and 0.8% points respectively during the period 2018-20 over 2017-19.”, the Ministry pointed out.

The statement also issued a number of initiatives taken by the government to ensure food security to its citizens.

It must be noted that India undertook the largest food security drive during the pandemic when the Modi government provided free food rations across India to all families.
