Hindu Munnani protests against attempts to convert residence into Prayer Hall in Kanyakumari

The Hindu Munnani has protested against a Christian Missionary group that has been trying to convert a  residential house into a Prayer Hall in Kanyakumari. In recent times, news of Christian Missionaries trying to convert people into Christianity, by even preaching the religion in public, is hitting headline very often. Earlier this week, a Christian Missionary group was trying to convert school students and General public by distributing the Bible at bus stops and schools, on the occasion of Christmas.

Now, the local residents of the Santhai area, Kanyakumari, have accused a Christian Missionary of trying to convert a residential house into a Church. Subsequently, the Hindu Munnani took this issue into their own hands. As the Hindu Munnani conducted protests against this conversion, the Tahsildar and DSP have said that no prayer meetings can happen in the location until the RDO completes his investigation.

A statement released by Hindu Munnani with regard to this issue said, “Attempt to illegally convert a residence into a Prayer Hall in Santhavilai-Kanyakumari area. After Hindu Munnani’s protest, the Tahsildar and the DSP conducted talks and has prohibited prayer meetings, until the completion of investigation by the  RDO.”

Who is this ‘god woman’ trending in the Tamil internet world?

Tamil internet has been going gaga over a ‘god woman’ who has been carrying herself as an incarnation of a goddess.

Called as ‘Annapurani Arasu Amma’, videos of this female has suddenly appeared on social media pages and has been going viral.

Clad in shiny silk sarees with heavy make-up and lipstick, she goes around like the main lead of the yesteryear ‘Amman films’. A woman can be seen showering flowers as the ‘god woman’ walks. Another woman sprinkles rose water on her.

She walks in slow motion and sits on a ‘throne’ with a song in the background as the crowd accompanying her behave hysterically.

In one of the videos, a woman who can be seen along with her in many of the other videos, lies under the god woman keeping as she takes the latter’s feet and keeps on her head shouting ‘Amma, Amma, My Amma’. Her behaviour has uncanny resemblance to the crazy behaviour of people in a Christian missionary prayer meeting.

However, it has come to light that the lady had first appeared on television in a reality show titled ‘Solvethellam Unmai’ which is a cringe fest where private matters of a family are made public. She allegedly had an affair and lived together with another married man and a father of two named Arasu.

It is this woman who has now propped up all of a sudden on social media.

Her YouTube channel named ‘Annapurani Arasu Amma’ though started in 2016 has been posting videos only in the past 3 weeks.

This sudden rise of this woman has led to speculation that she could be planted by propaganda machinery of the ruling regime in Tamil Nadu.

With Behindwoods, a prominent Tamil YouTube channel friendly to the DMK jumping to interview the lady, it has furthered suspicion that she could be part of a targeted attempt to malign the Hindu faith.

Netizens also allege that the god woman is being propped up in order deflect from the recent failures of the DMK government.

Earlier, the same Behindwoods had propped up the Narikorava lady around whom an entire propaganda was built for Chief Minister MK Stalin surrounding the release of ‘Jai Bhim’ movie portraying Stalin as a champion of the oppressed.

In these four years, the Prime Minister said that the state faced the pandemic challenge and also scaled the heights of development. “Jai Ram ji and his diligent team has not left any stone unturned for fulfilling the dreams of the people of Himachal Pradesh”, the Prime Minister emphasized.

The Prime Minister said that ‘ease of living’ of the people of the country is one of the foremost priorities and electricity plays a huge role in this. Hydro-power projects launched today reflect India’s commitment to eco-friendly development. “When the Shree Renukaji Dam project on the Giri river is completed, a large area will be directly benefited by it. Whatever income will be generated from this project, a large part of it will also be spent on development here”, the Prime Minister remarked.

The Prime Minister reiterated the changed working style of the new India. He talked about the speed with which India is meeting its environment related goals. The Prime Minister mentioned that “ In 2016,India had set a target to meet 40 percent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources by 2030. Today every Indian will be proud that India has achieved this goal in November this year itself.” The Prime Minister continued “the whole world is praising India, for how our country is accelerating development while saving the environment. Plastic has spread everywhere, plastic going into rivers, we have to make efforts together to stop the damage it is causing to Himachal.”

Dialogue targeting dynasty politics in ‘Maanaadu’ film gets muted on Sony Liv under DMK rule

Actor Simbu’s Maanaadu released in theatres in the last week of November and had a good run, giving him a grand success after quite sometime. The movie was recently released on the OTT platform Sony Liv.

The movie is based on a time-loop concept, set in a political background. Although the movie targets no party in particular, it has come to light that the OTT platform has muted one dialogue in the film, which takes a dig at dynasty politics. The dialogue which was not muted in the theatres, has been muted on Sony Liv as it has uncanny resemblance to the DMK’s dynasty politics.

The dialogue which comes during the climax of the movie has Y G Mahendran, one of the villains, point out how the Chief Minister’s son gets prominence while other leaders are always made to play second fiddle to only their family.  He tells the Chief Minister that it was really unfair of his son to be his successor and says that he and his family are subjected to be number two forever. This dialogue is important to the flow of the movie, and does not have anything vulgar. However, this was muted on Sony Liv, and the dialogue’s subtitles were also cut out.

Minnal Murali: A mass hero movie with a superhero flavour that tastes good

Cast: Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram, Femina George

Director: Basil Joseph

Indian cinema has a wide variety of genres to offer to us. You name it, and some film maker from some part of India would have at least done one film on the genre. Yet, till date, we turn our heads to Hollywood when it comes to Superhero films. Of course, we have commercial films, where the protagonist is generally larger-than-life. So powerful and heroic, that we willingly suspend our disbelief to accept that the Hero is capable of hitting 10 or more goondas. However, Indian Cinema had not really explored the superhero genre of films, until Mollywood decided to launch Minnal Murali.

Minnal Murali revolves around Jaison (Tovino Thomas) and Shibu (Guru Somasundaram), who are both hit by lightning, and end up gaining superpowers. However, the decisions they respectively make on how to use those superpowers make one the protagonist and the other the antagonist. How good wins over evil forms the basic crux of the story.

At the outset, Minnal Murali is just another ‘mass’ hero movie, with a superhero twist to it. But, the movie seeks to explore more than just the simple ‘Hero saves the day’ idea. Now, both Jaison and Shibu first use their powers to take revenge. So, initially, it is not like Jaison was always meant to be the hero and Shibu the villain. However, through the course of the storyline, Jaison decides to use his powers for better reasons, while Shibu goes for worse. This sets them apart, and hence the movie goes on.

Now, from the very beginning, the audience is aware of who the hero is meant to be and who the villain is. Yet, everytime the two meet, unaware of each other’s identity, we wonder what could possibly happen if the two forces are put against each other. This question of ‘What if?’ makes us want to keep watching, and it keeps us entertained throughout although the movie is quite long.

Being the first of its kind, Minnal Murali is quite different from the ‘superhero’ movies of Hollywood. When it comes to Hollywood, it is always about saving America. However, Jaison realises his true purpose only towards the very end of the movie, ie., to save Kurukkanmoola, a small village in Kerala. This makes us want to relate to this larger-than-life character and story, because Jaison was one of us before a lightning struck him.

Similarly, Jaison is put against Shibu who has very very similar powers, if not the same. It would have actually been easier for the director to establish that Jaison is capable of fighting several goondas, in comparison to our commercial movie directors who do it day-in and day-out. However, Basil Joseph stuck to just two, one against another, and made the fight more acceptable and balanced.

That’s not the best part of the movie. The best part is that the movie, although being of the superhero genre, establishes that anybody with just a little bit of presence of mind, and will to do good for all, can save the day. This is proven in the climax scene where Biji (Femina George) turns out to be just as heroic as Minnal Murali in salvaging the situation.

While American superhero movies talk about saving America and the word, Minnal Murali ironically establishes that Jaison actually wants to move to America to ‘settle’ in life. Most of his conflicts in the movie arise from him not being able to achieve this dream. However, he realises his purpose as a Superhero and decides to stay back and save his village, by the end of the movie.

Unlike general superhero stories, which expect the cause for the fight of the superhero to be huge, Minnal Murali justifies both Jaison and Shibu’s personalised cause of fight, so much that we actually feel sorry for Shibu’s loss in the end. The movie, by all means, was more of a fun, comedy take on a Superhero story, than an actual serious ‘Save the country’ kind of a film.

It is noteworthy that Shibu first uses his superpowers to fight a simple societal evil like sexual harassment. It makes the audience wonder if superpowers are actually necessary to tackle such battles, fought on a daily basis, rather than bigger threats.

Minnal Murali takes the easy and entertaining way to bring about a Superhero story. The movie has no unwanted scenes, and manages to convey the storyline in a simple and striking manner. It is a film of colors and carnivals that takes on a journey to the Kurukkanmoola village and its people. Thanks to Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram, and literally every other actors’ performance, the movie becomes so much more worth it.

For all those who don’t understand the Malayalam language, the movie is available in English, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu as well.

Minnal Murali is available on Netflix; watch before a ‘Minnal’ cuts down your power!

Don’t Look Up: A Satirical Take On Climate Apocalypse

It is no laughing matter when it comes to the apocalypse of the world, and we have had so many movies on apocalyptic battles. Don’t Look Up is a savagely made satire on one such battle, but here it isn’t with the aliens, but is with a group of illogically enhanced and agenda-driven individuals who believe that the end of the world is indeed a laughing matter.

With the social and political commentary on the current state of administrative decision making, and the ignorance of the people on the very things that need our immediate attention to, Adam McKay hits the nail on its head with an appalling accuracy, yet it is scary to admit that all that’s shown in the movie could happen or is being happening to us, and we are not doing anything about it.

The movie has a funny take on the inability of people at the highest order to comprehend and act upon an Earth-killing global catastrophe, and there is no way a mere group of scientists could deflect it to a nearby planet. The scientists are being considered as just “math guys” and aren’t being taken too seriously just because they do not have media training to handle press conferences and interviews. The media trained people always seem to deliver “real” stories to the audience, how it’s always breaking news but the news isn’t always groundbreaking. There is a sugarcoated delivery of every news that makes things seem less serious and more fun. And, the entrepreneurs who are technologically and financially rich are the ones that are given utmost importance, but at the end of the day, they do have a personal agenda, don’t they?

The administrators are very well aware of how gullible people are, and how short-lived people’s memory is just like how short-lived your laugh (or your happiness) is when you see “funny” viral memes, comments or cat videos. We, by default, make ourselves stay out of the loop regarding any earth-shattering information because they know that we don’t really care enough, just not yet. And when we do care, it would be too late for us to realise that we are the only ones at the receiving end.

The comet here in the movie metaphorically points towards Climate Change, and how the world is being ignorant about it. Not to blame the people alone, but the Government behaves as if the danger isn’t imminent, hence there isn’t an immediate response needed for it. Little do they know, that Climate Change is affecting us all little by little, and it will eventually be big enough for us to realise that it’s already too late.

More I think about “Don’t Look Up” to comment on the cast and the performance, it’s becoming more and more difficult for me to see it as just a movie. It’s more than just a movie, it’s the harsh reality that is happening right now, if not would eventually happen to us once the “comet” is visibly close to our eyes. The scientists have already seen the comet, it’s just a matter of time that we see it too.

However, to comment on the cast and performance for the sake of completeness, with such an ensemble cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett (and there’s more), do you expect anything less than a masterpiece at all? Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as scientists are realistically terrific, and so are Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill as agenda driven US President and Chief of Staff respectively. Cate Blanchett as TV News Anchor is cunningly brilliant as well.

Don’t Look Up is creatively brilliant and funny, weirdly terrifying and frightening at the same time, a scary depiction of the current state of affairs in the world on an imminent danger that is frowned upon and less talked about.

Don’t Look Up is streaming on Netflix. Watch it before the Comet hits the Earth.

Vegetable vendor saved from losing money in cyber crime to fraudster impersonating as army officer

cyber crime fraud

A vegetable vendor in Karnataka was saved from losing money to an act of cyber fraud by the timely intervention of a gram panchayat member.

According to reports, a man impersonating an army officer had contacted a vegetable vendor for the supply of vegetables to an alleged army camp. The man, who identified himself as Aman, called the vendor and told him that an army camp had been organized five kms from Uppinangady in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district. He asked the vendor whether he could supply vegetables for the camp on a daily basis, and when the vendor agreed sent him a list of groceries.

The caller told the vendor that he would send a vehicle to  collect the vegetables and that payment for the same would be done via bank transfer, for which he sought the vendor’s bank account details.

The vendor obliged and shared the details, when the man called him again asking him to share an OTP that the vendor had received on his mobile phone.

As the vendor was just about to share the OTP and thus possibly lose his life’s savings, an alert member of the Uppinangady Gram Panchayat noticed it and stopped the vendor from sharing the  OTP.
