DMK’s calendar ignores Hindu festivals; mentions them as ‘govt holidays’

Chandrasekhar, a DMK secretary and MLA for Thanjavur district has sold a daily sheet calendar for the year 2022. The calendar mentions the birthdays of various leaders and the remembrance days of late executives and functionaries. However, Hindu festivals are referred to as ‘Government Holidays’ in the calendar. At the same time, festivals of other religions are mentioned by their names.

With regard to this issue, the Tirupur North District BJP leader Senthilvel said, “These rationalists who have mentioned Hindu festivals as Government holidays, and in the same calendar have also mentioned Vastu Day, auspicious days, Manayadi sastras, etc. The DMK party is proving with every single action that they are against Hindus. How could they have won without the votes of Hindus? This calendar should be edited and republished, immediately.”

Chinese propaganda video over Galwan Valley falls flat with latest pics of Indian Army

After the Chinese state-controlled media posted photos and videos of its soldiers unfurling their flag in Galwan valley, the Indian Army completely busted when it proved beyond a reason of doubt that the video shared by the Chinese is not the spot were Indian and Chinese soldiers fought on June 2020.

Analysis of the videos with available open-source satellite images and terrain mapping clearly indicates that the flag unfurling incident did not take place on January 1, 2022 at the site of the June 2020 clash in Galwan Valley.

According to defense analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, the location of the video tweeted by the Chinese is wrong because the point were the hand-to-hand combat between Indian and Chinese forces that took place in June 2020 clearly indicates that the location of the unfurling of the Communist flag could not have been the same.

DMK Govt shuts down Amma Mini Clinics; AIADMK, BJP, AMMK condemn move

The DMK government headed by Chief Minister MK Stalin has decided to discontinue the Amma Mini Clinic scheme which was launched by the AIADMK government.

Citing lack of performance, the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that it was a temporary scheme that was meant for a year and it would be discontinued.

He added that the tenure of the doctors who were working in these clinics have been extended till March 2022 and alternate jobs would be provided for them.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched “Amma Mini Clinics” on December 14, 2020 in Chennai at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. Around 2000 such mini clinics were set up across the state to strengthen the public health infrastructure. Chennai alone was to have 200 Amma Mini Clinics and more were slated to be set up in densely populated areas.

Each mini clinic would have have a doctor, a nurse and an assistant to help with public consultation along with facilities for checking body temperature, blood pressure, blood oxygen,  haemoglobin, blood sugar, urine samples, etc.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) had lauded the Tamil Nadu government’s move for launching the scheme in the middle of a pandemic that will provide for better and accessible medical facilities for the public.

The DMK government’s move to shut the doors of Amma Mini Clinic has attracted criticism from the AIADMK, BJP and the AMMK.

Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the DMK government’s move and said that the it is shutting down these clinic out of political vendetta as it bears the name ‘Amma’ (late J. Jayalalithaa).

“The DMK government has reaffirmed that it is a government that does not care about the welfare of the poor and common people.”, Palaniswami said in a social media post.

Pointing out the double of Health Minister Ma. Subrmanian, BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai said that it is a government’s duty to continue schemes meant for the welfare of people.

T.T.V. Dhinakaran, chief of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam too condemned the DMK government for closing down Amma Mini Clinics.

Founder of blood-testing startup Theranos found guilty of tricking investors

Silicon Valley biotech star Elizabeth Holmes who defrauded investors in her blood-testing startup Theranos on Monday (January 3) was convicted after jurors found Holmes guilty of four counts of tricking investors and now faces the possibility of spending years behind bars.

Holmes had claimed that she had developed a revolutionary testing system and had vowed to revolutionize diagnostics with self-service machines that could run an array of tests on just drops of blood, a vision that drew high-profile backers and made her a billionaire by the age of 30.

Elizabeth Holmes was called the next young tech visionary and braced numerous magazine covers which allowed her to get investors’ cash. However, it all fell apart when Wall Street Journal reported that the machines didn’t work as promised.

Prosecutors spent 11 weeks presenting over two dozen witnesses and made an exhaustive argument that Holmes knew her technology did not work as promised and took steps to mislead investors and patients.

She had also put logos of pharma giants Pfizer and Schering-Plough onto Theranos without permission and one of the most important arguments made by the prosecution was that she deliberately tried to inflate Theranos’s credibility in order to win backers.

Vatican may defrock convicted pedophile priest belonging to Archdiocese of Bombay

Father Lawrence Johnson, the Catholic priest who was sentenced to life on the charge of a sexual offense against a minor boy may face actions from the Vatican after Indian Cardinal, Oswald Gracias, reportedly recommended the Vatican to resume ‘canonical procedures’ against the cleric.

Lawrence Johnson was a priest at the Archdiocese of Bombay (Mumbai) when he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court dealing with sexual offenses against children on Dec 29, 2021.

The Catholic priest was also charged with violating several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Gracias, who is also one of the archbishops of Bombay, in a statement, said that “As the case has been concluded in the courts, I am recommending to the Roman Offices that the canonical proceedings which were suspended due to the ongoing hearings be now resumed.”

Johnson was arrested on Dec 2, 2015, and charged with having engaged in “sexual activities against the order of nature”. When Johnson molested the boy the victim was 13 years old.

What made the case unique was it was the first publicly reported case of Catholic Christain clergy sex abuse. However, it was a long road to justice because, after the boy’s parents had complained against the pedophile priest, cardinal Gracias, and two other bishops tried to cover up the case.

The boy’s mother also had stated that when the matter was informed to Cardinal Gracias, he behaved and acted as if nothing had happened. However, Gracias has now claimed that the church had acted and the priest in question was immediately
suspended.

“…I continue to pray for the victim and the family. I understand their pain, anguish and anger. I ask pardon that a representative of the Church, appointed to be in charge of the community, was responsible for this,” he said.

The Catholic Church has a history of covering up crimes of priests who have raped and molested their parishioners all over the world. In fact, the Church has used all types of coercive tactics from threat, intimidation and monitory inducement to cover up the crimes of its clergy.

BSF plays a vital role when it comes to border security and also intelligence and a BSF official was quoted in the aforementioned publication that, “The Haryana breed of cows are hardly seized at the border now. But those from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are still turning up. If state governments act, BSF will not have to do this job,”.

Tamil Nadu: Father donates house to temple after his son & daughters convert to Christianity

Velayutham (85) is a resident of Munusamy Avenue in Kanchipuram. He had worked and retired as Health Inspector under the Tamil Nadu government. He has two daughters and a son. All three married a Christian and converted themselves to Christianity.

Not able to digest the setback, he donated his own house to the Kumarakottam Murugan Temple, his kula deivam (clan deity).

“I own a house in a 2,680 sq.ft property which is worth around Rs 2 crore now. I don’t want to give the house to those who have changed their religion. So I have donated it to Kumarakkottam Murugan temple which is my family deity. Those who have converted to Christianity will not perform any rites even when I die. So I don’t want to give my property to them. My second son and daughter are residing in a part of the house. They can live here as long as myself and my wife live. But the moment we die the temple will take over the house. I handed over the sale deed to the temple yesterday in the presence of the HR&CE Minister.”, Velayudham was quoted saying in a report by Dinamalar.

Veera Mangai Rani Velu Nachiyar: The Warrior Queen Who Led The Fight Against British Colonial Rule

Born on Januray 3rd 1730, to King Chellamuthu Vijayaragunatha Sethupathy and Queen Sakandhimuthathal of the Ramnad Kingdom, Velu Nachiyar is popularly known as ‘Veeramangai’ amongst Tamilians. True to this moniker, Velu Nachiyar was only fond of valour and art forms that portray valour, ever since her childhood days. As a child, she learnt all martial arts, including, swordsmanship, archery, javelin throw, horse riding and elephant riding.

In 1746, she married the Sivagangai king, Muthu Vadakunathar, with whom she also had a daughter. When Muthu Vadakunathar refused to pay tax to the Britishers. The Nawab of Arcot, with the aid of British troops, and with the help of modern weapons, conspired to attack Sivagangai and bring it under his control.

Once, when King Muthu Vadakunathar visited the Kalaiyar temple for worship, the Nawab and his troops along with the British troops, surrounded the temple. He was attacked brutally and succumbed to a sword attack. Velu Nachiyar was angered and was eager to avenge her husband’s death.

After 8 years of waiting and consolidation of troops, Velu Nachiyar went into war. She first took the Kalaiya temple back into her control. After this, she seperated her troops into two, one led by Chinna Marudhu and another under the commandership of Periya Marudhu, and took control of both troops.

The troops under the commandership of Chinna Marudhu, defeated the British troops at Tirupathoor. There is a tradition in Sivagangai where, every Vijayadasami women flock together to worship the Goddess Rajarajeshwari inside the palace. Velu Nachiyar, entered the palace with her troop of women, disguised as  devotees, hiding their weapons inside their attires.  At an unexpected moment, they launched an attack on the British troops who were guarding the palace.

The British troops that did not expect this attack, were slayed brutally by Nachiyar’s troops. Those who managed to survive, ran for their lives, away from the state. The British flag that was flying on top of the Palace was pulled down, hoisting Velu Nachiyar’s Hanuman flag. Thus, she avenged her husband’s death.

She went onto rule Sivagangai for ten more years, after which she passed it on to her daughter. On 25th December, 1796, Velu Nachiyar breathed her last. Tamil history has seen many brave and valourous women, but only called Velu Nachiyar as a Veeramangai.
