Cauvery Calling: Farmers plant 17 lakh saplings in 2 years

In the last two years, Cauvery Calling volunteers have enabled 5,100 farmers in Puducherry and Villupuram, Cuddalore and Thiruvannamalai districts to plant 17 lakh saplings on their lands, said field coordinator of the Cauvery Calling Movement,  Shri. Tamilmaran at a press conference at the Fine Arts Foundation in Puducherry, today.

Shri. Tamilmaran said that in Villupuram district, 1,700 farmers have planted 6.33 lakh saplings while 1,600 farmers in Thiruvannamalai district are cultivating 5.29 lakh saplings and about 1,500 farmers in Cuddalore district are cultivating 4 lakh saplings. In Puducherry, 284 farmers have planted 1.16 lakh saplings.

He also revealed that Isha volunteers have enabled farmers and the general public to plant 29.45 lakh saplings by promoting the tree-based farming model between 2013 and 2022 in these regions.

A total of 2.1 crore saplings have been planted so far in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka and 1.25 lakh farmers have adopted the tree-based farming model, promoted by Cauvery Calling.

A farmer from Mullanchavady, Cuddalore district, Shri. Rangarajan said, “I have been cultivating paddy, sugarcane and banana on 10 acres. I came to know about tree farming while attending an agricultural field training conducted by Isha in Erode. After that I planted about 4,000 timber trees along the ridges and planted bananas in between. Banana trees are planted around to prevent them from collapsing and being damaged during storms. Banana yields have also increased. ”

A farmer from Tindivanam area, Shri. Purushothaman said, “My land is irrigated land. Agriculture can be done only when it rains. I have been cultivating crops like groundnut and black gram. I planted 1,200 teak and mahogany saplings on one third of my land after learning about the Cauvery Calling. We are confident that these will provide good returns in the future.”

Speaking about the objective of the Cauvery Calling Movement, Shri. Tamilmaran said, the Movement aims to revitalize the Cauvery River and the soil in the river basin and improve the farmers’ economy along with the environment. A total of 242 crore trees will be planted in private farmlands in the Cauvery river basin over the next 12 years to achieve these objectives, he said. Since the inception of the movement, there has been a great increase in the interest of farmers in planting trees and raising awareness about tree-based farming.

Cauvery Calling is an on-ground demonstration of the river revitalization model proposed by the Rally for Rivers (RfR) campaign that was launched by Sadhguru Vasudev in 2017. The RfR campaign was successful in creating awareness among the people on the state of India’s dying rivers. The central government has recommended to all states to adopt the RfR draft policy to revitalize rivers in their state. Subsequently, six states – Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Orissa, Maharashtra, Punjab and Karnataka – are implementing the recommendations on their own.

Alleged ‘entrepreneur’, DMK sympathizer and serial fake news peddler tells ‘Periyar’ EVR abolishing caste in TN

Suresh Sambandam, the CEO of Kissflow and who is popularly known for being the ruling DMK’s unofficial brand ambassador, has once again been caught spreading unconfirmed information and lies. Taking to his Twitter page, he had shared information about castes in various states of India. He had shared a map of India along with caste names that are taken as surnames in different states. In the same map, he marked Tamil Nadu as the state without surnames and titled it as ‘Periyar’s Bhoomi’ (the land of ‘Periyar’).

Suresh, who is known for speaking from East to West about Social Justice, got into a tangle, after believing and sharing this fake news. Below his post, many netizens replied that there was no such customs in their respective states.

What is to be noted is that Tamil Nadu is one of the leading states in India for intra-caste marriages. When that is the case, how can the castes be eliminated? The Dravidian parties who show the rabid demagogue E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (hailed as Periyar by his followers), as the man who alleged abolished caste in Tamil Nadu, have not shown which caste practice he has abolished, till date.

Periyar himself had once registered his name in a National Daily, as E V Ramasamy Naicker, withe Naicker being the caste name. When this is the case, it is still a mystery why people like Suresh Sambandam bring in Periyar’s name for social justice and caste discrimination.

There have also been instances where DMK leaders themselves have their caste names.

DMK MP T.R. Baalu bears the initial ‘R’ which stands for ‘Rajuthevar’, one of the dominant castes in Tamil Nadu.

This is not the first time Suresh Sambandam has been caught peddling lies. Earlier, he had fudged data about the number of doctors available in different states of India to its population.

Prior to that he exposed his shallow knowledge on history, politics and economy in an interview with ‘Neeya Naana’ Gopinath to Behindwoods YouTube channel.

During the farmers protest that happened in the outskirts of Delhi, he had peddled false news about the farmer empowerment laws where he said that Minimum Support Price would be scrapped and that key farm items would be removed from the ‘Essential Commodities’ which was busted by The Commune.

SC refuses to refer pleas demanding quashing of Vanniyar quota to larger bench

"Let The Past Not Haunt The Future": Supreme Court To Hear Challenges To Places Of Worship Act supreme court allahabad high court panchayat recount vantara waqf amendment posh babri masjid facebook post

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (February 15) refused to refer to a larger bench against the quashing of the 10.5 per cent reservation provided to Vanniyars has been refused

The Vanniyars are one of the Most Backward Community (MBC) in Tamil Nadu, in government jobs and admission to educational institutions and the bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai said it has perused the judgments submitted and was of the view that the issue does not need consideration by a larger bench.

‘We are not inclined to the argument of referring the matter to a larger bench, you can start your arguments,’ the bench said.

On Tuesday, the apex court had said that it will decide the issue of referring the matter to a larger bench first without going into the merits of the case.

The state of Tamil Nadu was represented by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who had submitted that the case involved constitutional issues and would require consideration by a larger bench.

On a separate note, the top court had already made it very clear that admissions or appointments already made under the said quota will not be disturbed and further directed that no fresh appointments to state government services or admissions to educational institutions should be made till February 15, the next date of hearing in the case.

The top court was hearing a batch of petitions filed by the state of Tamil Nadu, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), and others challenging the November 1, 2021 judgment of the high court quashing the reservation provided to Vanniyars, saying it was unconstitutional.

The Madras High Court had said, ‘Is the state government empowered to do internal reservation. The Constitution has given enough explanation. The legislation providing for internal reservation is cancelled,’ and the state government cannot come out with such legislation as explained in the Constitution.

RTI reply contradicts HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu’s statement about Vadapalani temple property recovery

Last year, DMK HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu announced that the HR&CE department recovered 5.5 acres of land that belonged to the Vadapalani temple, from encroachers. The announcement, which came in the month of June last year, also said that the property was worth ₹250 crores.

However, an RTI from 2019 says something else about this announcement. The RTI clearly mentions that,  this 5.5 acres of property belonging to the Vadapalani temple has been leased for  29 years, dated 22.10.2008. Which means that the DMK government was in power when this land was leased for 29 years.

However, the DMK government might have cut short the period of the lease, last year in June. But, how does that make it the recovery of the land from encroachers? The announcement made by Sekar Babu last year, clearly mentions that the land was recovered from encroachment. However, this land was only leased to some private individual, not encroached. This contradiction now makes us think whether all temple property that the HR&CE has claimed to have recovered after the DMK came to power, were actually recovered from encroachers.
