Save Soil Movement: Isha Samskriti students raise public awareness

Combining traditional and modern dance forms, students of Isha Samskriti held a public awareness program on the Save Soil Movement today at the Coimbatore Railway Station.

Forty Isha Samskriti students drew public attention to soil degradation and the Save Soil Movement’s efforts to reverse and halt the phenomenon in a two-and-a-half hour event from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It included Kalari, a traditional martial art form and a flash mob sequence that drew curious onlookers.

Speaking about the importance of soil conservation, the students said, “Soil resources are rapidly declining worldwide. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) has warned that if we do not take action now, the world’s surface soil resources will disappear completely within the next 60 years. Moreover, international scientists have warned that the world population will increase to 9.3 billion by 2045, while food production is at risk of declining by 40 percent. If that happens then civil unrest and hunger will increase. Therefore, we must take action now to protect the soil. Isha volunteers around the world are raising awareness about the movement in various ways.”

The Movement to Save Soil is a global movement initiated by Sadhguru to prevent soil extinction. It aims to urge and support governments in formulating policies that will address soil health in their country and halt and reverse soil degradation. On 21 March, Sadhguru embarked on a lone motorcycle journey of 30,000 km that will cover 27 nations in 100 days to raise awareness about soil extinction and build global consensus for urgent action to prevent soil extinction.

The Movement has thus far received an overwhelming global response with 6 Caribbean Nations signing MoUs with the Save Soil Movement and the 54-member Commonwealth also pledging its support. As of the 17th day of his 100-day journey, Sadhguru has met several heads of state, ministers, ambassadors, representatives of environmental bodies celebrities and media in several European countries where the Movement has also been received with great enthusiasm by ordinary citizens.

The Save Soil Movement is supported by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Food Programme (WFP), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Commonwealth Nations.

Islamist outfit Tamil Nadu Muslim League has sought a ban on Actor Vijay’s next release Beast stating that the film creates an impression that Muslims are extremists..

In a statement, the leader of the Tamil Nadu Muslim League party Musthapha said “The film industry has always created an impression that Muslims are terrorists, as is often the case in Tamil films. We see many social organisations strongly opposing when a film mentions their caste identity or has names of caste leaders as film characters. But it is a matter of great sorrow that the scenes in the films continue to portray as if only Islamists are engaged in a culture of bombing and gunfire and acting against the peace and sovereignty of the country.”

The Tamil Nadu Muslim Leagues has asked the state Home Secretary to ban the release of the film.

“It has been reported that the Beast movie features Islamists as extremists. Islamists currently observe fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. In this context, problem will arise if Vijay’s Beast movie, which portrays Islamists as extremists, is released. Therefore, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Muslim League, I urge Home Secretary SK Prabhakar to ban the release of the film Beast

Earlier, the Islamic country of Kuwait also banned the film reportedly over anti-Pakistan content.

The Tamil Nadu Milk Association has also sought a ban on special shows for the movie expressing concerns over wastage of milk by fans.

Feature Image Credits: The New Indian Express

The grave of Vishnuvardhana, the fourth king of the Hoysala dynasty, has been found in the village of Angadi near Mudigere taluk in Karnataka.

Angadi which was originally called Shashakapura is said to be the origin of the Hoysala dynasty.

The fact that the king’s resting place was at this location has been substantiated by the writings of freedom fighter Late Makonahalli MK Doddappa Gowda and the Havvalli stone inscription.

King Vishnuvardhana died an untimely death in 1141 AD when he was in Bankapura. Accorrding to historical sources, his mortal remains were brought to the capital city Dwarasamudra (now Halebeedu) on the palace elephant along with horses and soldiers. Though Dwarasamudra was the original capital, Vishnuvardhana made Bankapura in North Karnataka as another capital.

The funeral procession wase stopped by chieftains of Taligenadu – Bannagowda and Bhoothegowda of Mariyalapalli – near Sundekere Halla in Mudigere taluk. There was apparently a war ensued between the two factions and Bhoothegowda was reportedly killed in the fight.

Binnegowda is said to have seized the palace elephant and looted the royal wealth. Following this, Vishnuvardhana’s body was buried near Sundekere halla and four stone pillars were erected on the grave. It is said that one of the stone pillars was hit by lightning and destroyed while three other pillars are intact on the site.

Stand up India Scheme was launched on 5th April 2016 to promote entrepreneurship at grassroot level focusing on economic empowerment and job creation. In 2019-20, the Stand Up India scheme was extended for the entire period coinciding with the 15th Finance Commission period of 2020-25.

On the occasion, Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “As we commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Stand-Up India Scheme, it is heartening to see that more than 1.33 lakh new job-creators and entrepreneurs have so far been facilitated under this Scheme.”

Himalaya faces heat over Halal

A photo went viral on WhatsApp and then on other social media platforms where pharmaceutical company Himalaya purportedly says it uses halal-certified products.

The message in the image claims that the company maintains the ‘halal-ness’ of the herbal, chemical, food colour products in order to fulfil the obligation for Muslims to consume halal products.

It further claims that the company’s products comply with Islamic law, which is the Shari’ah, and are free from any forbidden ingredients under Islamic law. Since then, #BoycottHimalaya has been trending on Twitter and other social networking sites.

Earlier, in July 2021, several social media users shared a claim suggesting that the Himalaya Drug Company’s neem, tulsi, and lasuna supplements contained halal-certified meat. There was a claim that the Himalaya cosmetic products, tulsi, and neem capsule shells are made from gelatine, which is obtained from cows or pigs, and are halal-certified.

Halal certification is issued by even governments, state authorities and big corporations in Islamic as well as other nations. Many private companies in India say they are halal-certified. While telling Muslims that the food offered does not offend their religion, and that cosmetics and pharmaceuticals that include animal by-products were obtained by killing animals the Islamic way, it also means implicitly that a certain percentage of Muslims were employed in the workforce to produce the good.

Within the domain of animal products, of course, alcohol is present in perfumes and pig fat is used in lipsticks and lip balms while cosmetic items use pig, chicken, goat, and other animal by-products, all of which are considered haram by Islamic law. As a result, halal-certified cosmetics and pharmaceuticals merely signify that they do not include any ingredients that are forbidden to Muslims.

Companies on the other hand are securing halal certification for their products so that they can be exported to Islamic countries.

Demand for boycott of Halal meat and products has been growing louder for a long time saying that non-Muslims should not be allowed to consume food that is prepared according to Islamic rites. When things other than meat are halal-certified — for example, a halal-approved factory — it implies that the facility or the product employs a certain number of Muslim workers, explains jhatka activist Ravi Ranjan Singh who had carried out a campaign to rid the parliament canteen of halal certification.

Halal in Arabic means ‘permissible’. In the Halal method of slaughtering, the animal or the bird is killed by cutting through its jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe that drains out all the blood, leading to its slow death. Halal certification mandates that the process must be performed only by a Muslim and the name of Allah must be invoked while slaughtering. Any deviation from the mandated process renders the meat ‘haram’ (forbidden).

Halal is seen as imposition of Islamic religious beliefs and practices over non-Muslims. It is also seen as leading to monoculturalism and monopoly as they restrict culinary diversity and keep non-Muslims out of business and employment opportunities.

Another individual named Manoharan has reportedly ruined the 27 acres of land belonging to the Neyvasal Tadakapureeswarar temple with a gravel crusher and machinery. Karunanidhi, Murugaraj, Bhuminathan and Samithurai from the same area have encroached on the temple land without any permission. The present Bandanallur Pasupatheeswarar temple executive officer Sundararajan has lodged a complaint regarding this matter.

It has been reported that Manoharan was the former district secretary of the AIADMK. He was also the Chairman of the Thiruppanandal Union Committee and is currently the Organizing Secretary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam.

Earlier in 2018, a person named Venkataraman had filed a case at the Madras High Court about the irregularities happening at the Pasupatheeswarar temple including that of illegal sand mining and brick kilns.

“Centre didn’t ask to raise property tax, DMK Govt is lying and shifting blame”: Edappadi K. Palaniswami

AIADMK Gen Sec Edappadi Palaniswani Demands DMK Govt End 'Cruel' Use Of Students For Agricultural Survey. stalin anna university sexual assault case eps delimitation

AIADMK joint coordinator and Leader of Opposition, Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched a scathing attack on the MK Stalin-led DMK government saying that Chief Minister has done nothing productive for the people in the last 10 months and has been busy promoting himself with the help of media.

Leading the protest at Trichy, Mr. Palaniswami accused Chief Minister Stalin looting people’s money and investing it in Dubai.

The AIADMK is primarily protesting against the property tax hike which has been increased by 50-150%. While the DMK has said that they have done so based on the guidelines of the ‘Union government’, Palaniswami said that there was no such mandate from the Centre.

He said that the DMK government is trying to shift the blame in an attempt to confuse the people.

Mr. Palaniswami also hit out at the government for stopping some of the schemes of the erstwhile AIADMK government like the – marriage assistance scheme.

He also pointed out that it was the AIADMK government which brought 11 colleges to the state which the Stalin government had recently inaugurated in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Figuratively speaking, Mr. Palaniswami said that by inaugurating various development projects that were initiated by the previous AIADMK government, CM Stalin was resorting to naming other’s children.
