Iranian Trolls And White Supremacists Used Social Media Platforms To Fuel Hinduphobia

Social media platforms, civil society organizations, and media are largely unfamiliar with Hinduphobia today. But a study from Rutgers university has shown that anti-Hindu disinformation and propaganda in the form of memes and hashtags is currently growing prolifically on online platforms. Members of the Network Contagion Lab at Rutgers University-New Brunswick (NC Lab), found evidence of a surge in hate speech and evolving patterns targeting the Hindu community on numerous social media platforms. The findings have been published in their report that was recently released. https://t.co/gZx79Zquaa

Researchers at Rutgers NC Lab used artificial intelligence to better understand the evolution of disguised and encoded language patterns shared on social networks. According to an analysis of one million tweets, Iranian trolls are spreading anti-Hindu stereotypes to the fuel hatred throught impact campaigns accusing Hindus of genocide against Indian minorities.

The report also found  how white supremacists shared genocidal memes about Hindus which were shared prolifically within extremist Islamist web networks on messaging service Telegram and others. It explains how it is widely shared on the religious web network to fuel hatred. In July, signals from Hindu codewords and memes reached record highs, leading to real-world violence, especially given rise to religious tensions in India. Social media platforms are largely unaware of codewords, key images, and the structured nature of this hatred, even if this hatred surges, shows the report.

The report found that anti-Hindu Disinformation is masked through the use of ethnic pejoratives, slurs and coded language. Here’s an example of a meme associated with Hindus titled “Poo in the Loo” using the antisemitic Happy Merchant Meme. This shows how ethnic haters share effective memetic material. “Hinduphobic tropes — such as the portrayal of Hindus as fundamentally heretical evil, dirty, tyrannical, genocidal, irredeemable or disloyal— are prominent across the ideological spectrum and are being deployed by fringe web communities and state actors alike”, says the report.

White Supremacist & Islamist communities refer to Indians as “pajeets” on fringe web platforms (4chan, gab). This is rapidly growing in mainstream communities too. Using Word2Vec, a Natural Language Processing Algorithm, the researchers found that the word associations with “pajeet” are derogatory characterizations. Their analysis suggests that pajeet is used in reference to Hindus & Indians interchangeably, with the majority of derogatory characterizations targeted towards Hindus. Distinctly Hindu symbols are used in memes referencing pajeet, and not other Indian religions.

The Chabad Synagogue shooter in 2019, had referenced “pajeets” in the manifesto. It has also been used in white nationalist podcasts about murderous fantasies about Indians. Memes associated with pajeet found on Twitter openly called to violently kill Hindus. Extremists used memes to suggest a repeat of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Nazi style executions and co-opt the murder of George Floyd to suggest the same should be done to Hindus.

In addition to extremist groups and fringe web communities, state actors also deploy anti-Hindu tropes as part of information operations for geopolitical influence. We uncovered an influence operation by state sponsored Iranian trolls who pretended to be Pakistani users. During the March 2017 Bhopal–Ujjain Passenger train bombing by ISIS, Iranian trolls, pretending to be Pakistani, attempted a disinformation campaign to suggest that the attack was done by “Hindu Extremists,” and attempted to get it trending.

The researchers called on platforms to recognize the growing ethnic disinformation and the harmful impacts this can have on Hindu communities. “This is essential for better detection”, urge the researchers. Chief data scientist at the NCRI and a senior research fellow at the Miller Center, Joel Finkelstein, who directed the student research says educating young people on how to recognize open source hatred messages is an important first step in helping vulnerable communities respond to new threats. Rutgers previous work has shown a link between the intensity of hate speech on social media and the outbreak of real-world violence. “We hope the report will serve as a timely warning before hate speech leads to real-world violence,” said Denver Riggleman, a former U.S. Congressman and Miller Center researcher and visiting scholar.

Kittur Chennamma: The Fiery, Fierce, Feminine, Freedom Fighter

Our nation’s struggle for freedom had started long before the birth of Indian National Congress; or for that matter even before the popularly known First War of Indian Independence that took place in 1857.

Here are a few of the earliest patriots who fought against the foreign rule:

Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone 1750-59;
Tilka Mahji: 1784-1785;
Puli Thevar: 1759-1761;
Veeramangai Velu Nachiar 1780-90;
Pazhassi Raja: 1793-1805;
Tirot Sing: 1833-1835;
Kittur Chennamma: 1816-1824;
Velu Thampi: 1808-1809;

It is a revelation worth recording that Tilka Majhi was one of the earliest Indian freedom fighter and the first Adivasi leader from Santal Community. He took up arms against the British in the 1784, around seven decades before Mangal Pandey. He organized the Adivasis to form an armed group to fight against the British.

It is imperative that, in order to inculcate the spirit of patriotism in our progeny, we should pass on to them the complete and comprehensive information about all the selfless, faceless heroes and heroines who had sacrificed their fortunes, possessions and lives for the sake of our motherland. While some of them are locally recognised and reverentially remembered, most of them are unknown on a pan-India scale, inasmuch our history books glorify only a fortunate few and leave all the others to fade into oblivion.

Now, let us know a little about Rani Kittur Chennamma, who was hailed by our respectful President during her inaugural speech, along with Rani Lakshmi Bai, Rani Velu Nachiar, Rani Gaidinliu.

Kittur Chennamma was born on October 23, 1778, in Kakati, a small village in the present Belagavi District of Karnataka in a Lingayat family. She received training in horse riding, sword fighting and archery from a young age and became quite famous in her village for her bravery.

At the age of 15, she was married to Mallasarja Desai, the king of Kittur, and became the queen. She had one son from the marriage, who after the death of her husband in 1816, also died in 1824. As the queen of Kittur, she raised Shivalingarudra Sarja, her step-son as her own to succeed the town after Mallasarja.

Unfortunately, Shivalingarudra Sarja also died due to deteriorating health, after which the throne was laid empty again. Applying the ‘Doctrine of Lapse’, St John Thackeray, who was working for the British East India Company attempted taking control over the kingdom of Kittur.

Chennamma’s declaration of Shivalingappa to be the rightful heir to the throne was a direct confrontation of the British challenging the Doctrine of Lapse, thus triggering the British to launch an attack on Kittur. Unfazed by this, she sent a letter to Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of the Bombay Presidency, who obviously turned it down. This was followed by demands to surrender her kingdom, as well as the vehement refusal of the British to accept Chennamma as the ruler which eventually led to the break out of a war.

Competent in warfare right from her early days, she outmatched the mighty British force with deftness and dexterity.

The British attempted to carry out a rampage in Kittur with a force of 20,000 men and artilleries mainly from the third troop of the Madras Native Horse Artillery. They tried to pillage Kittur’s treasures and jewels, valued around ₹15 lakh but were unsuccessful.

In the first round of war, during October 1824, the British forces lost heavily. St John Thackeray, Collector and political agent, was killed in the war. Amatur Balappa, a lieutenant of Chennamma, was mainly responsible for his killing and losses to British forces.

Two British officers, Walter Elliot and Stevenson were taken as hostages. Rani Chennamma released them after a promise from the British that they would end the war. But English men being English men, they cheated her and re-started the war.

The monstrous British, equipped with forces on a colossal scale, attacked again and this time the tiny army of Kittur Chennamma could not withstand the brutal onslaught. The second war was fought for 12 days by Chennamma and her allies. During the second assault, Munro, the Sub Collector of Solapur who was also the nephew of Thomas Munro was killed. Chennamma was also helped by her lieutenant Gurusiddappa in the war against the British.

Like in every battle, two soldiers of her own army Mallappa Shetty and Vankata Rao turned out to be traitors. They had mixed mud and cow dung in the gun powder of the canons. She got defeated and was imprisoned.

Throughout her imprisonment Chennamma spent her time reading Hindu scriptures and performing pooja.

Every year, the Kittur Utsava is celebrated during the month of October to commemorate her first victory against the British forces.

Even though our history pages have failed to recognize Kittur Chennamma, she remains alive as an inspirational woman through local legends and folklore.

Stalin Govt Puts Up Stellar Show On TN’s Role In Indian National Movement, But..

The 44th Chess Olympiad held near Mahabalipuram, Chennai came to an end with a grand finale held on August 9, 2022.

The event saw Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin presiding over as the chief guest along with FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich and recently elected deputy president and former World champion Viswanathan Anand. Senior ministers of the DMK government and MK Stalin’s family including Stalin’s wife Durga Stalin, Stalin’s son and DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin, Stalin’s son-in-law Sabarisan, Stalin’s daughter-in-law Kirthika Udhayanidhi too attended the event.

As part of the grand finale ceremony, the Tamil Nadu government had organized a special show about Tamil Nadu’s contribution in the Indian National Movement.

The show titled ‘Tamil Mann Part 2’ featured slices from the lives of several nationalist freedom fighters of Tamil Nadu like Puli Thevar, Velu Nachiyar, Kuyili, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Marudhu Brothers, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Subramania Bharathi, Tirupur Kumaran and G. Subramanian.

The historic moment of Mahatma Gandhi sheding his western attire and wearing a simple dhoti that happened in Madurai was also shown.

However in a blatant distortion of history, the DMK government subtly introduced its ideologue E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker (EVR) in this performance showcasing the contribution of freedom fighters from Tamil Nadu.

EVR, known as ‘Periyar’ by his followers, was a rabid anti-Hindu bigot known for his pro-British stance when the Indian Freedom Struggle was its peak. He pleaded with the British to not leave India and pledged allegiance to them asking the Madras Presidency to be ruled from London. He even went to the extent of demanding a separate Dravida Naadu and had met Mohammad Ali Jinnah regarding the same.

What was otherwise a stellar performance, ended up as a subtle Dravidian propaganda with the mention of Annadurai, Karunanidhi, MGR and Jayalalithaa.

From ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ To ‘Hindi Padam Paaru Da’: Calling Out DMK’s Hypocrisy On Hindi

Bollywood actor Amir Khan starrer Lal Singh Chaddha, is set to hit the screen on August 11, 2022. The film is the Hindi adaptation of Tom Hank’s 1994 classic Forrest Gump.

It is produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kiran Rao, and Viacom18 Studios, and stars Naga Chaitanya, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya in supporting roles.

Even before its release, the film has met with resistance from people with calls for its boycott owing to Amir Khan’s remarks about ‘rising intolerance’ in India that he made in 2015. The hashtag #BoycottLalSinghChaddha has been trending all over social media for the last two weeks.

In Tamil Nadu, the film is being distributed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin under his production banner Red Giant Movies.

It is worth mentioning that the DMK is a party that is known for its anti-Hindi politics.  The party introduced language-chauvinism to the Tamil people through the anti-Hindi agitations of the 1960s.

The DMK had even come up with a T-shirt campaign called ‘Hindi Theriyathu Poda’ (“I don’t know Hindi, Get lost!”) in 2020, claiming to resist ‘Hindi imposition’.

In fact, the leader and cadres of DMK leave no opportunity to ridicule Hindi-speakers as paanipuri walas. Its own Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said that it is not necessary to learn Hindi as speakers of that language can be found selling only Pani Pooris. DMK MP from Dharmpuri had derogated north-Indian states especially the Hindi-belt states as ‘Cow Piss States’.

That being the case, the top leaders of the DMK and their family members have no qualms in embracing Hindi themselves. They run schools that teaches Hindi. More than 40 schools run by the DMK leaders or their relatives are affiliated to the CBSE and follow the three language policy with one of the languages being Hindi.

Stalin’s daughter, Senthamarai Sabarisan runs the Sunshine Senior Secondary School where Hindi is mandatory till class 8.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva had sung a famous Hindi song ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai’ at the farewell function of Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

And now, the DMK has gone one step further with Red Giant Movies distributing Lal Singh Chaddha in Tamil Nadu. This is the first Hindi film to be distributed by Red Giant Movies belonging to DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin.

At the film promotion held recently, a reporter had posed a question to DMK’s crown prince Udhayanidhi Stalin pointing out the brazen hypocrisy of DMK on the issue of Hindi to which the latter replied that the DMK was never opposed to learning Hindi but was only against forceful imposition of Hindi.

This is the convoluted logic that the DMK puts up in defence whenever they are confronted with such difficult questions. The Dravidian Stockists try really hard to buttress with the argument that ‘business is different from politics’ when in fact there is no such distinction especially for the DMK.

The DMK must understand that the Tamil people aren’t as gullible as they were 50 years ago.

With RedGiantMovies distributing LalSinghChaddha in TamilNadu, DMK’s hypocrisy on Hindi stands naked just like AmirKhan in PK.Sooner or later, the DMK will stand naked just like Amir Khan in PK.

1993 RSS Chennai Office Bombing: 29 Years On, Justice Evades Victims Of Terror While Terrorists Live On Taxpayer’s Money

8th August 1993. It was the day of Guru Pooja commemorated specially by members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A small ceremony was held in the forenoon at the Narada Gana Sabha in Alwarpet, Chennai. After the event, members disbursed without a hint of what was to strike at them in the very same afternoon.  At around 2.30 pm,  a powerful RDX bomb exploded at RSS head quarters of Tamil Nadu situated in Chetpet, Chennai. Eleven people – Ramasubramaniam, Seshathri, Kumari Balan, Prem Kumar, Mohana, Lalitha, Desigan, Ramakrishna Reddy, Kasinathan, Rajendran and Raveendran – were killed. Eight of them were young pracharaks (RSS full timers). Three other Swayamsevaks who had come to meet RSS pracharaks also lost their lives and seven others were injured.

Investigations revealed that Islamic jihadis were hiding and training themselves for a long time to attack the RSS and terrorize Hindu society.

S.A. Basha was the prime accused and 15 others were arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act for their alleged involvement in the blast and for possession of lethal weapons. The other hardcore Al-Umma activists who were arrested included its State Secretary M. Mohammed Ansari, Mujibur Rehman, Ojir, Mohammed Aslam, Siraj alias Auto Siraj and Ahmed Pasha.

Barring a few regional dailies and magazines, many in the national media did not even bother to cover the brutal bomb blasts leave alone condemn it. A few on the other hand were even apologetic to the Islamic terrorists as they twisted it as a vent in view of Babri Masjid demolition.

It was reported that the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had offered to provide money from the government to rebuil the RSS office. However, it was politely declined by the Swayamsevaks and was formally communicated by General Secretary H V Seshadri. Funds were collected by Swayamsevaks on their own through campaigns and the office was rebuilt through the donations made by several members of the public and other organizations. But what the governments and courts ought to do – making justice prevail by punishing the terrorists – has not been done despite the main accused getting arrested. Though the charge sheet was filed in 1994 and case was taken up by CBI which examined more than 200 witnesses, the perpetrators are yet to be brought to justice.

The 16 Al-Umma men who had been detained under TADA were released on bail in January 1997 when the DMK Government prosecutor did not oppose their bail.

On 14 February 1998, a series of 12 high-intensity explosions rocked Coimbatore leaving 58 dead and more than 250 injured. The target was BJP leader Advani. Investigations revealed that the banned Muslim fundamentalist outfit Al-Umma, headed by SA Basha was found to be responsible for the blasts.

This man and his organization Al Umma was allowed to function openly without any restriction by the DMK Government till the 1998 Coimbatore blasts.

Basha is currently serving life imprisonment but he has been living a lavish life in prison and has got parole more than 160 times in the last 24 years.

On the other hand, justice has been on exile for all the lives killed by the Islamic terrorists.

The End Of The Road For Khans

When was the last time that the King Khans, Aamir, Shahrukh and Salman, gave a blockbuster? Aamir had none in the last five years although he does very less movies. His Dangal, released in 2016 was his last one. Shahrukh’s last blockbuster was Chennai Express which was released in 2013. It became a blockbuster although it didn’t have a great story thanks to the audience that believed in going to theatres for some kind of entertainment albeit senseless. Salman Khan was the only one who gave a blockbuster in the last five years with his pure action movie, Tiger Zinda Hai. This has been the fate of the big Khans in the last five years.

I think we have a reached a stage in Bollywood where the audience is holding it for much higher standards, now that they have seen the standards of the movies churned out by Tollywood, Kollywood, Sandalwood and Mollywood. The big Khans seem to be struggling to get a good script and have to settle with some mediocre ones or some remakes from the Indian cinema in the south. Probably, Covid made things worse for them as everyone latched on to much better content coming up in OTT platforms and started to appreciate the work more of the not so glamorous but great actors like Manoj Bajpai, Pankaj Tripathi and the likes. The movies of the King Khans based on their box office performance obviously did not meet the standards of a blockbuster for the Indian audience albeit some sporadic hits.

Several movies of Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan are in the pipeline but not sure if any of them would be a blockbuster given the changed audience mood and interest today. In the last five years, Shahrukh has given two flops and one semi-hit, Salman has managed to give one blockbuster in 2017 and rest all were semi-hits and flops and Aamir has just done two movies with one flop and other where he plays more of a cameo in Secret Superstar which released in 2017. Aamir Khan’s upcoming release, Laal Singh Chaddha, is in for a rocky ride as the Hindu audience doesn’t seem to be in a mood to forgive his earlier comments about intolerance in India and portrayal of Hindu gods in PK. This movie is also not an Aamir Khan original and is “inspired” by a great movie in Hollywood called the Forrest Gump. Aamir doesn’t seem to come close to Tom Hanks and his expressions seemed to be similar to PK. A comment in social media said, “BTW, who sells gol gappas (panipuri) in a train”, which I thought actually made sense. Looks like the perfectionist is running out of good script ideas and is losing his form quite fast.

The Hindi-speaking audience has shown more penchant for B-Town movies showcasing the life of a common man that they can relate to and appreciate more easily. The flashy Karan Johar kinds of movies don’t seem to capture the imagination of movie goers today. Bollywood directors don’t seem to be able to do history based blockbusters like RRR or Bahubali that the Telugu industry seems to have mastered. The Big Khans never were good in historical movies anyways and will never fit into common man roles like Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazudding Siddique and the likes can so easily portray. They will have to hang on to genres like action, romance or drama which will not run unless it’s something like a KGF which again doesn’t seem to be the strength of the big directors in Bollywood who sign up the Khans. Remember, I am talking about blockbusters here and not the usual hits that doesn’t need superstars like the Khans anymore.

To sum up, I think it’s the end of the road for the Big Khans in Bollywood. Bollywood is going to slowly transform itself into the trends that the other language movies are setting especially in the south of India. Given their age going against them, their dwindling box office collections and the pressure on Bollywood to change, it will not be long when Bollywood will say thanks for everything and move on beyond the Khans.

You Can’t Be A Good Leader Without Being A Good Coach: Executive Coach Ruchira Chaudhary At Isha’s HINAR 2022

“You cannot be a good leader without being a good coach,” asserted Ruchira Chaudhary, Executive Coach, and Founder, TrueNorth Consulting continuing her session on coaching as an effective Leadership Role Modeling tool on day 2 of “Human Is Not A Resource” (HINAR 2022) program, organised by Isha Leadership Academy at the picturesque Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore.

“Coaching is not a distinct discipline. It is what you do every single day as you lead those that work
with you, that work for you,” expressed Ruchira. Viewing coaching as an act of maximizing someone’s future potential, Ruchira argued that coaching should not be restricted to large teams or on the basis of working styles as at the end of the day,everybody still has to work with people, leading them by impact or influence. “Think about Coaching as a life skill, it's something everybody should do. The act of taking people higher. It’s about making them shine brighter. And in the process, you learn about yourself,” said Ruchira, explaining coaching as a vital component in the learning curve of an individual itself.

Moving on from learning models, Amit Kalra, Chief Transformation Officer, HLE Glascoat Limited led
the participants on the transformative journey of his organisation presenting a case on building capacity.

Speaking about his initial days, he revealed, “I neither had a job description, nor a title or a clear designation. I told everyone during my introductions that my passion is to build “great organizations”.We (HLE Glascoat Limited) are a Good company, we can be Great. Good to Great
became the mission,” signifying the power of narrative to ultimately enable the seeds of transformation in the organisation.

Sharing the three lenses to view the organisation – Product, People and Money, with an ideal combination of all three, Amit discerned, “passion for organization development should be slightly greater than the product,” in creating a well-managed company.

Outlining the story of this transformation, co-host Ashutosh Pandey, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra First Choice Wheels summarised, “Transformation story is not about functional siloed transformation. Those days are passé. Active transformation for tomorrow is clearly an enterprise-
wide phenomenon. If you have to do the active transformation in practice you have to use
enterprise as a canvas.”

With an aim for overall well-being, the participants started their day today with a session on Yoga and also experienced a guided meditation by Sadhguru. Setting the tone for the post-lunch session, Isha Samskriti students dazzled the audience with a riveting classical Indian dance performance.

Earlier, the Day 1 of the 6th edition of HINAR 2022 at the picturesque Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore, kicked off to a resounding start, with power-packed speaker sessions that included former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, Nina Chatrath, Leadership and Business Consultant and Independent Board Director, Oriental Hotels and Ruchira Chaudhary, Executive Coach and Founder, TrueNorth Consulting. While Prasad drew parallels between cricket and business highlighting the challenges of coaching, Nina Chatrath unveiled the learning preferences connecting them with creating synergy amongst people in the organisation.

Ruchira led a session on “Unlocking the secret code to uncommon leadership” delving deeper into the relationship between coaching vis-a-vis leadership and one’s own personal growth.

Human is NOT a Resource (HINAR) is an annual leadership program organized by Isha Leadership
Academy. The 3 days program brings together thought leaders, business and HR practitioners from diverse fields to discuss practical steps to enable a paradigm shift from human beings as resources to
human beings as possibilities. The final day tomorrow will focus on the primacy of execution, building upon Learning and Capacity, the two other enablers of Active Transformation discussed in the program before. VS Parthasarathy, Vice Chairman, AllCargo will narrate a real-life ‘Execution’ story of his organisation anchoring the conceptual framework in real-life business situations.

Over 10 years ago, Sadhguru founded Isha Leadership Academy to provide the highest quality leadership education by combining external skill sets with tools for wellbeing. Isha Leadership Academy focuses on cultivating leadership as an innate and intuitive process – beyond strategies or techniques. Its guiding principle is the importance of first managing one’s own mind, body, and energies, in order to manage external situations and people.
