Dravidian Stockist Outlet TNM Publishes Article Justifying Usurpation Of Village By TN Waqf Board

Prominent Dravidian Stockist news outlet The News Minute (TNM), which is popularly perceived as the unofficial mouthpiece of the DMK, has published an article in which it tries to establish that the village of Thiruchendurai belongs to the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board and not the legitimate owners of the land.

There has been a furore over the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board listing the entire village of Thiruchendurai in Tiruchirappalli district as its property, including a a temple and its lands.

This came to light after a man named Rajagopal had gone to the Joint III Sub-Registrar office in Trichy to sell his agricultural land that he had in Thiruchendurai. He was told by the sub-registrar that he cannot sell his land as it belongs to the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board. The sub-registrar had told him that he has to get a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board office in Chennai to sell the land.

Apparently, the Waqf Board has sent a letter to the Registration Department along with documents that the entire village belongs to them and that those who come to register a deed for a land in the village, should get a NOC from them.

As the news snowballed into a controversy, the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board ‘allowed’ property-related transactions in the Tiruchendurai village for the time being.

Reporting on the matter, TNM quoted the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board Chairman Abdul Rahman who has claimed that the records available with the Waqf Board show 389.03 acres of the land in Thiruchendurai as its property.

“For most of the properties, the survey number is mentioned. But for some, the records available with us only mention the extent of the land owned, and not the specific details. The survey numbers and other information are available with the Tamil Nadu State Archives. We have requested the department to share those details, based on which we will decide on the next course of action”, he was quoted saying in TNM’s report written by Senior News Editor Shabbir Ahmed.

He was also quoted saying that they have now “allowed” the registration of properties in the village “as of now”.

Chairman Abdul Rahman also noted that just because there is a temple on the land, it cannot be decided that it is not Waqf land adding that the land in the name of Waqf can “still be used for public utility”.

“We have come across certain documents which show that when philanthropists donate large amounts of lands to Waqf institutions, they sometimes allocate portions of that land for other uses, such as the establishment of temples and ponds, etc. This could have happened in Thiruchenthurai as well. Just because there is a temple on the land, we cannot simply decide that it is not Waqf land. Besides, any land in the name of Waqf can still be used for public utility.”, Abdul Rahman was quoted in the report by TNM.

TNM also legitimized the Waqf Board’s claims stating “TNM also verified the Gazette Notification number 570 to confirm that the land had been registered as Waqf property on June 27, 1956.”

It further further add weightage to the Waqf Board’s claims stating that Waqf Assets Management System of India, managed by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, lists 389.03 acres of land at Thiruchenthurai village as Waqf Board property.

However, not a word has been written about the land owners who already have the revenue department documents including patta, chitta, adangal, revenue ‘A’ registration, encumbrance certificate, etc.

On the other hand, it went on to turn the tables portraying those fighting for their land rights as if it is the BJP which is trying to give a communalise the issue.

Palghar-like Attack On Hindu Sadhus In Maharashtra’s Sangli, 6 Arrested

Feature Image Courtesy: Times Now

In a brutal reminder of the attack on and murder of sadhus in Palghar, four sadhus were attacked in Maharashtra’s Sangli on suspicion of being child lifters. Assistant Sub-inspector Pankaj Pawar of Umadi police stated that they took suo moto cognizance of the incident after the video of the assault went viral on social media.

The police confirmed the arrest of six persons in the case. “There was an altercation, which suddenly escalated, and the sadhus were beaten up with sticks by locals,” said a police official adding the police learned that the four belonged to an akhada in Uttar Pradesh after arriving on the scene. “We’ve not received any complaint/formal report, but are looking into viral videos & verifying facts. Necessary action to be taken,” said Sangli SP Dikshit Gedam.

“In the sadhus killing case in Palghar, then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s government meted out injustice to them. But the present Maharashtra government will not allow any injustice against any sadhu,” BJP’s Ram Kadam said.

The incident took place in Jat tehsil’s Lavana village on Tuesday. Four sadhus belonging to Uttar Pradesh were travelling to Pandharpur in Maharashtra from Karnataka’s Bijapur. They resumed their journey on Tuesday after stopping at the temple outside the village on Monday. The sadhus sought directions from a youngster and were subsequently attacked by the villagers who assumed them to be members of criminal gangs that kidnap children.

The police said that the youngster from whom the four sought directions knew only the Kannada language. According to certain media reports, the boy raised an alarm as he was scared and following this the villagers assaulted the sadhus.

The police have registered a case under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) against the accused. Five persons have been named while 15 unknown persons have also been booked as accused in the case. The police were not able to establish contact with the sadhus who have proceeded on their pilgrimage.

Two sadhus and their driver were lynched to death by a 200-strong mob in Maharashtra’s Palghar district in April 2020 in the presence of the police. Kalpvriksh Giri Maharaj (70) &  Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), and their driver Nilesh Telgade, residents of the Kandivali suburb of Mumbai were travelling to Gujarat from Mumbai. The Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) government was pulled up by the Supreme Court in the case.

Islamists In Bangladesh Occupy Houses Of Santhal Tribes

Recently, on the occasion of Mujib Barsha, the Government of Bangladesh had gift to the Santal Hindus of the country homes. However, reports have emerged that their shelters are being occupied by local Islamists. The victim Santals have complained that some Islamist families of the local Chilmon Khan Dighi had occupied their houses.

The Santal Hindu community is now spending their days in other people’s backyards due to this encroachment. The area around Fazilpur of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila has become quite noisy around this incident and has led to a clash between the two communities.

Santal Hindus complained about the matter to the Nirbahi officer of the upazila last Tuesday. In the written complaint, they said that after getting the house documents from the government, when they went to the house, the local Islamists threatened the Santal Hindus and locked the houses. Although the house deeds are with them, the houses are occupied by the Islamists. It is known that Chilman Khan Dighi covers an area of 9 acres. Houses were constructed for 52 Santal Hindu families under the shelter project on three banks of the Dighi. On the eastern half of the Dighi is a Muslim cemetery. The remaining part is the crematorium and temple of the Santal Hindus. On about an acre of land, Kodaildhoya Dighi is next to it. Already, 40 Santal Hindu families have moved into 40 homes. However, 12 families in the houses allocated in the third phase are not able to go home due to the obstacles of the Islamists.

Abhijit Basak, chairman of Fazilpur Union Parishad, said that the houses were allotted to Santal Hindus living across Chilmon Khan Dighi from the upazila. But some people forcibly occupied some of their houses. Since the victims are Hindus, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer was informed to settle the matter.

Local Santal Hindu representative Robin Murmu said, “more than a hundred Santal Hindu families have been living in Pargaon village for three generations, including Chilmon Khan Dighir Par. Among them, 167 people live in 30 families. All had mud houses. They were in a lot of trouble. The hardship was relieved to some extent after the government built the houses. 40 families were able to get into the house, but the remaining 12 families were not able to get up. A few families of Islamists occupied their houses for the sake of the cemetery.”

Previously, on September 9, police arrested Pritam Das, the Hindu leader of the tea workers’ movement in Sylhet, Bangladesh, on charges of insulting Islam. The police filed a case against him under the Digital Security Act, accusing him of insulting Islam. Pritam Das is currently in police custody.

Abusive Political Commentator ‘Savukku’ Shankar Sentenced To 6 Months Jail

The Madras High Court on Thursday (September 15, 2022) sentenced the rabid foul-mouthed political commentator ‘Savukku’ Shankar for contempt of court.

Shankar, who runs a blog named ‘Savukku’ also features in several Tamil YouTube channels identifying himself as a ‘senior journalist’. He is known for his abusive behaviour on social media targetting politicians, journalists, judiciary and government officials.

The self-styled ‘senior journalist and whistleblower’, had commented on Justice G.R. Swaminathan and his judgements in a number of interviews including in his own YouTube channel.

In a tweet posted on 18 July 2022, Shankar implied in his tweet that Justice GR Swaminathan had ‘met someone,’  at the Azhagar temple in Madurai in connection with the case against prominent DMK-critic Tamil YouTuber Maridhas.

https://twitter.com/Veera284/status/1549037302785392645

In the earlier order that was given by the Court to initiate contempt proceeding against Shankar, Justice G.R. Swaminathan said that Shankar’s recent tweets has ‘crossed the Lakshman Rekha’.

Justice Swaminathan noted that he was initially of the opinion that Shankar was entitled to comment on his judgements but the recent tweet had questioned his integrity which amounts to contempt of court.

In an interview to Red Pix YouTube channel he had said that the “entire higher judiciary is riddled with corruption.”

Following his tirade against Justice G.R. Swaminathan and the judiciary in general, the Madras High Court initiated suo-motu proceedings against the vile political commentator.

Earlier on 8 Septmeber 2022, Shankar filed an affidavit with a petition seeking 8 weeks time to file his reply.

In his defence, Shankar stated that his remarks “entire higher judiciary is riddled with corruption” was a statement made in the course of an interview and not part of a prepared speech.

” The words are part of a larger statement. When taken out of its context and seen as a stand-alone statement, it may seem it could have been better worded. However, when heard in context and when the circumstances in which the conversation has happened is looked at in its entirety and when the statements before and after are looked at, this Hon’ble Court will believe me when I say that the statement does not show and is not intended to show any disrespect to the Hon’ble Court nor to scandalise the Court.”, Shankar had stated in his affidavit which he has posted on his website.

‘Savukku’ Shankar has also been accused of harassment, stalking and defamation by a woman journalist in named Sandhya Ravishankar.

The self-styled ‘whistle-blower’ is a serial abuser and has spewed venom against individuals on different occassions. He had once called for a genocide against Tamil Brahmin community. He had called Hon’ble President of India Ram Nath Kovind, a ‘slave dog’. He has made several unwarrant and crass comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He had called Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as ‘Oorgai Maami’, a casteist and a sexist reference to her Brahmin and woman identity. Zoho’s CEO Sridhar Vembu was also targeted by Savukku Shankar and was subjected to consistent harassment through casteist remarks. In 2014, his website ‘Savukku Online’ was banned by the High Court for publishing defamatory articles against Sun News newsreader and lawyer Mahalakshmi. There is also a CBI case pending regarding this case.

“Entry Of Sanskrit & Hinduism Has Spoilt This Land”: Another DMK Leader Spews Venom Against Hindu Faith

Even before the furore has settled over DMK MP A. Raja’s remarks on Hindus, another senior DMK leader has spewed venom againt Hinduism.

On September 7 while addressing an event organized by Dravida Kazhagam, abused Hindus and the Hindu faith saying all Shudras are children of prostitutes and they will remain so until they remain in Hinduism.

“You’re a Shudra till you remain a Hindu. You’re a son of the prostitute till you remain a Shudra. You’re a Panchaman (Dalit) till you remain a Hindu. You’re an untouchable till you remain a Hindu. How many of you wish to stay as children of prostitutes? How many of you wish to remain untouchable? Only if we’re vocal about these questions, it will become elemental in breaking Santhana (Sanatana Dharma).”, the DMK MP said adding that the time has come for Viduthalai, Murasoli, DMK and DK to take up the issue.

Defending the foul-mouthed DMK MP, former Rajya Sabha MP and a senior leader of the DMK TKS Elangovan said that the “entry of Hinduism” has spoilt Tamil Nadu.

“See the very purpose of the Dravidian Movement is to create parity among human beings. What is Hinduism? What does Hinduism say? It says Varna, it speaks of Manu Dharma. What we feel is.. our fight is against Manu Dharma. When a Hindu, another Hindu, my brother Hindu, could not walk into a street where upper class people live, is an insult. I am denied of my rights. Because I am treated a Shudra.”, Elangovan said.

Adding further, the DMK leader said “The meaning of the word Shudra, what he (A. Raja) said, I am not going to talk about it. But the practice of Manu Dharma was never in the south. The entry of the Sanskrit and Hinduism into this land has spoilt this land.”

He said that they (Dravidian Movement and DMK) made the “Dalit Hindus” and “Backward classes people” to study like the “upper caste people”.

Centre Gives Nod To Include Narikuravars Of TN In ST List

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday (14 September 2022) approved a proposal to add Narikuravar also known as Kuruvikarar belonging to Tamil Nadu to the list of notified Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said that government has approved the inclusion of communities that were earlier left out of the tribal list in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Himachal.

The Central government has said that all the concessions available to the tribals will now be available to the Narikuravar community.

The Narikuravars are an indigenous, semi-nomadic tribal community living in Tamil Nadu. The tribe was notified as ‘criminal tribe’ during colonial times. They were decriminalised under the Denotified Tribes Act, 1952. The Lokur committee in 1965 recommended giving ST status for Narikuravars. They are classified under the MBC list in Tamil Nadu.

In the 1980s, the then-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramachandran, proposed to the Union government to bring Narikuravars under the ST list. After several protests and hunger strikes, the UPA government in 2013 was forced to issue a bill to include the community in the ST list. In a 2015 letter, BJP leader and former Minister of State Pon. Radhakrishnan told the Tribal Affairs Ministry that the Narikuravar Community is “nomadic, extremely poor and one of the most vulnerable communities in Tamil Nadu, and a meagre 0.02% are graduates.” In May 2016, the Lok Sabha passed a Bill listing Narikuravars as ST.

Inclusion of the Narikuravas in ST is set to benefit around 30,000 people of the community who have been having difficulties in getting government identification documents birth certificate, Aadhar card, ration card, etc.

Hindu Orgs Oppose Construction Of Church Building Allegedly On Central Govt’s Land In Chennai’s St. Thomas Mount

A complaint has been filed by Hindu organizations with the Cantonment Officer regarding a new building being constructed on Central Government land by the Church administration in St. Thomas Mount, Chennai.

Many patches of land in the St. Thomas Mount area of Chennai are under the control of the Office of the Cantonment Board of the Central Government. A new building is reportedly being constructed by the Church in one of the lands.

In light of this, a few Hindu organizations like the Hindu Munnani and BJP have filed a complaint with the Officer of the Cantonment Board demanding that the construction work be stopped immediately.

St. Thomas Mount which even today is known as Parangimalai in Tamil is said to be the place where Parangi Maharishi lived and did penance for Lord Shiva.

A committee was set up on behalf of the Hindu Tamil Association to reclaim Parangi Malai. An attempt was made to do a circumambulation of the mount on the occasion of Pournami (full moon day) for which the permission was denied by the police.

NCPCR Asks EC To Take Action Against Congress & RaGa For Involving Children In Political Propaganda

Following the complaint filed with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) against Congress party and its leader Rahul Gandhi, the child rights body has asked the Election Commission of India to take action for misusing children as political tools.

The Congress party kicked off the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a fancy road-trip from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in an attempt to give a new lease of life to the party in the run up to the various state Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

As part of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Bharat Jodo Bacche Jodo campaign is organised by ‘Jawahar Bal Manch’ which as per its official Twitter handle, is a department of Indian National Congress.

Rahul Gandhi as part of his political campaign has been visiting schools, and interacting with minor children making them participate in political campaigns and inculcating political ideology in them.

The party through its social media handles has been publishing several videos of Rahul Gandhi’s yatra and his interactions. There are several images and videos that have been circulating in social media that shows children being targeted and made to participate in the campaign with a political agenda under the slogan ‘Bharat Jodo Bacche Jodo’.

The minor children participating in the campaign were seen holding Indian National Congress party flags and shouting political slogans.

A complaint was filed by NGO-watchdog Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), stating that a political party has set up an internal department to mobilise minor children in its activities which are contradictory to the provisions under section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The complaint also stated that the Election Commission of India and quasi-judicial bodies, including the NCPCR, had made it clear that parading children during election or political campaign is a clear violation of children rights.

The NCPCR in its letter to the ECI stated “Since, INC is registered as a political party, any separate wing
established/organized by the party is a part of the party that is political in nature. Therefore, ‘Jawahar
Bal Manch’ is a political wing of the INC….Membership of a party shall be open only for adult Indian citizens (i.e. above l8 years of age). In this regard, INC is also violating these guidelines by the Election Commission and its own rules submitted to the Election Commission.”.

“In view of the allegations stated in the complaint, the Commission deems it appropriate to take cognizance u/s l3l (i) O of CPCR Act, 2005 since there is a prima-facie violation of child rights.”, the letter stated.

The NCPCR letter also stated that use of children as props to fulfil political agenda is child abuse which can have a severe long term impact on their mental health and is against Article 21 ofthe lndian Constitution.

“The commission thereby requests your good offices to look into the matter and have a thorough inquiry ofthe events and take necessary action against the political palty and its members who have been mentioned in the complaint.”, the letter concluded.

Gandhi & Godse: Finding Common Grounds

“The path to hell is paved with good intentions” – French Abbot Bernard of Clairvaux

In our life, we would have faced situations at different points of time where there could be a compulsion to choose between two equally unpleasant/pleasant choices. At the spur of the moment, we may be driven to certain debatable decisions with which we may ourselves differ later. Ergo, it is always prudent to be practical and pragmatic while probing into any perplexing problem.

Our Ithihasas and Puranas illustrate many such knotty situations where one will not be able to conclusively decide rights and wrongs.

For instance, there is a perennial debate among scholars and consequently a favourite topic in ‘Pattimanram’s [Debates in Tamil] about two seemingly contrasting characters in Ramayanam viz., Kumbakarna and Vibheeshana, with the group divided into two diametrically antithetical factions, each vociferously advancing arguments and asserting that one is right and the other is, naturally wrong.

But, life does not offer such a binary solution. There can be a win-win situation when both are right. Also, determination of what is right and what is wrong is not that simple, since it is swayed by individual perception, values, attitudes, beliefs, habits and even moods, creating distorted and defective dialectic, as a consequence of which, the final decision of each will definitely differ.

Our scriptures describe ‘Dharma’ as under.

Apasthambha:

[Dharma and Adharma do not tell that I am Dharma and I am Adharma. Devas, Gandharwas and pithrus (manes) would not tell that this is Dharma; this is Adharma by showing their real form. So, understand that which is praised by saints as Dharma and which is not accepted by them is Adharma.]

Looking at the characters from Ramayana, Kumbakarna is not a villain. He advises Ravana to return Sita and seek pardon from Sri Rama. When Ravana refuses, he feels that he should not desert his brother at the most crucial hour and sacrifices his life for Ravana. Vibheeshana also advises Ravana and when he declines, he feels that Dharma is superior to fraternal relations, leaves him, goes and surrenders at the feet of Sri Rama. The fact that both are sterling personalities is splendidly portrayed by Kamban during the scene where Vibheeshana goes to Kumbakarna to persuade him to come to the side of Sri Rama. Despite the fact that they are facing each other in the battle field as foes, it is strange there is not even an iota of acrimony between them; instead, it is boundless love between brothers! The entire episode exhibits the poetic genius of Kamban and an exquisite treat in literature for all Tamil lovers.

Now, coming to our 2Gs. We are referring to Gandhi and Godse. Anybody praising one ipso facto treats the other as traitor instantly. Why should it be so? The moment their names are mentioned, one is obsessed with prodigious prejudice for the one and profuse praise for the other as a result of which one is no longer able to see reason. For him, one is pitch black and the other is alabaster white. But does it have to be so? Can there not be any denouement when both of them are laudable? Let us go deeper into history and find out.

Gandhi, The Idealist

Gandhi ji grew listening to stories of Prahlad, Harischandra and Sri Rama from the lap of his mother. He was immensely influenced by all the three characters from infancy. Prahlad’s refusal to yield to his demon father in spite of being subjected to unimaginable harsh treatment, Harischandra’s steadfast adherence to the principle of Truth even after losing everything in life, Sri Rama’s unflinching resolution to keep his father’s promise, had made indelible impression in his nascent mind. He attempted to adopt those lofty principles in his own personal life verbatim et literatim. A frugal, austere, abstemious, upright life at all points of time in life was his motto and he practised it in the utmost precise, punctilious, perfect manner. Even while suffering bestial blows at the hands of the brutal british, he never relented nor retaliated but bore the brunt with forbearance and fortitude. He was a perfectionist to the core. He never compromised on moral values. Non-violence [Ahimsa], Truth, spartan living were at the core of his heart. He proved that even in Kali Yuga, one can embrace the eternal ethical dicta of Krita Yuga with elan.

In short, he lived such an exceptionally exemplary life that prompted Albert Einstein to remark thus: ‘Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth’. He can be considered as an ‘Avatar’ descended for a specific purpose.

Let us look at him from another angle. In the strictest sense, Gandhiji was not a political leader. He was more like an exacting parent for the masses. He treated the people as his own children and therefore, as a doting, dutiful father, wanted them to lead an austere, ascetic, abstinent life, following the principles of Ahimsa, truth, abnegation like himself. He was so rigid and relentless, steadfast and stubborn that he overlooked the basic axiom that the rules that are applicable to the individual cannot be thrust on the society as a whole. Society is comprised of heterogenous masses, majority of whom cannot mentally reconcile themselves to the highest moral values. Still, since he was treated almost as an incarnation by the hindu masses, they implicitly obeyed all his commands and suffered alongwith him. Unfortunately, his munificence was mercilessly milked to the maximum by the minorities under the crafty, conniving, calculative leadership of Jinnah, to the detriment and disaster of the hindus. Blinded by excessive altruism, he could not perceive the ground realities.

Godse, The Realist

Godse was not a trigger-happy radical fanatic as being pictured by his adversaries. An educated Brahmin, leading a normal life, engaged in journalism. He did not hate Gandhi as a person. Instead, he had the highest regard for Gandhi’s selfless services to the nation. Godse’s only ‘fault’ was that he was extremely patriotic. However much one may condemn his action, the fact remains that he is a patriot. He did not kill for personal gains; he had acknowledged that Gandhi was a selfless leader; he was very much aware that his own name, career, image and life will all be ruined by his gruesome act and he will be condemned by all.

Initially he was in RSS and then he joined Hind Maha Sabha. His blood boiled when the nation was partitioned. He could not swallow the gory, gruesome genocide on The Direct Action Day and, according to him, Gandhi’s appalling apathy towards it was unpardonable. After partition, Pakistan was due to get ₹55 crores from the imperial treasury, which Vallabhbhai Patel rightly withheld insisting on a solution to Kashmir. On the other hand, Gandhi went on a fast and forced for immediate payment. Godse was not only furious but felt forlorn that there was nobody to expound, educate and enlighten Gandhi, the folly of his foolish stance. He felt there was no other go.

In fact, he harbored no enmity against Gandhi. He says, ‘Gandhiji did undergo sufferings for the sake of the nation. He did bring about an awakening in the minds of the people. He also did nothing for personal gains.’ He avers that the media failed to play its role of pointing out the flaw in Gandhiji’s perception.

Godse was sentenced to death along with one of his accomplices, Narayan Apte. Justice G.D. Khosla, who was on the bench of the East Punjab High Court, which started the final hearing of the accused’s appeal, wrote in his own book, The Murder of the Mahatma: “The highlight of the appeal before us was the discourse delivered by Nathuram Godse in his defence. He spoke for several hours discussing, in the first instance, the facts of the case and then the motive which had prompted him to take Mahatma Gandhi’s life… The audience was visibly and audibly moved. There was a deep silence when he ceased speaking. Many women were in tears and men were coughing and searching for their handkerchiefs. This silence was accentuated and made deeper by the sound of an occasional subdued sniff or a muffled cough… I have, however, no doubt that had the audience of that day been constituted into a jury and entrusted with the task of deciding Godse’s appeal, they would have brought in a verdict of ‘not guilty’ by an overwhelming majority.”

Before his execution, Godse wrote to his parents: “You are the students of the Gita and have also learnt the Puranas. Lord Krishna had recited this Gita to enlighten Arjun and the very same Lord Krishna had, with his Sudarshan wheel, chopped off the head of an Aryan king, Shishupal, not on a battlefield but on a sacrificial ground. My mind is pure and my feelings are absolutely righteous; millions of people might speak in a million different ways, but my mind has not become uneasy or shaken with repentance even for the moment. If there is any heaven, I shall certainly have my place reserved there for me.”

Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte were executed in Ambala jail at 8 A.M. on Tuesday, November 15, 1949, i.e., after twenty one and a half months of the shooting incident. On reaching the platform they recited a verse of devotion to the Motherland.

नमस्ते सदा वत्सले मातृभूमे – त्वया हिन्दुभूमे सुखं वर्धितोहम् । महामङ्गले पुण्यभूमे त्वदर्थे पतत्वेष कायो नमस्ते नमस्ते..
[Salutations to thee, O motherland, I have grown in thy lap of love and happiness.
O immensely auspicious motherland! My life in thy service! Salutations, Salutations!]

They shouted slogans which reverberated over the radius of a hundred feet in the silent atmosphere around.

‘Akhand Bharat Amar Rahe!
‘Vande Mataram.‘

Conclusion

Human tendency is to deify their dear leader, put him on the highest pedestal and start blindly worshipping him. That is quite convenient for them since, by doing so, they can absolve themselves from the compulsion of having to live like him. During his time, Gandhi reached such an empyrean level that he could impose his standpoint on any issue upon the entire nation and in case of any dissention, he invariably resorted to fasting, to pressurise others into submission. While the arcadian masses implicitly obeyed his commandments and silently suffered, this aspect was exploited to the hilt by the perfidious minorities, to the detriment and disaster of the hindus, the monstrosity of which Godse could not countenance and condone. In fact, he did not pull the trigger in a fit of instant rage. He pondered over all the possible causatum and finally could not find any other solution.

We hasten to add that, even for a fraction of a moment, we do not support nor justify violence; not at all. A crime is a crime, that is all. Nobody has the right to take the life or property of others. And anybody who does it, whatever be the palmary motive, deserves punishment. What happened was an inexorable tragedy in the annals of history. But, Gandhi has been extolled and kept at such an exalted firmament that any attempt to evaluate an event in his life or any estimate, let alone paying any semblance of encomium on Godse is viewed with extreme execration. In hindsight, we can speculate that if only both of them had had a one to one meeting where they could have had a plain, frank, open heart-to-heart discussion, if Godse had been able to convince a receptive Gandhi on the futility of pandering to the minorities at the colossal loss to the Hindus, who were considering him as Mahatma and whom he could browbeat into submission with his Satyagraha technique, and thus prevented Gandhi from indulging in excessive extravagance, history would have been completely different. It just did not happen. History is abound with lots of such ifs and buts.

At this juncture, a bizarre burlesque in our daft Dravidian clan is worth mentioning. While one can understand the instant repulsion and revulsion of the true Gandhi lovers at deifying or even justifying Godse, nay, even looking at the events from his standpoint, it is puerile and preposterous that those who are illegitimately glorifying a known notorious criminal Prabhakaran and his ignominious terrorist gang (Perarivalan, et al) and consequently forfeit their right, also joining the bandwagon in condemning Godse!

Finally, no man is perfect; also, nobody can be. Man is an amalgam of mixed qualities. It will therefore be prudent, politic, practical and profitable for us, if, instead of blindly deifying personalities or, on the other hand, probing and nitpicking blemishes in others, we attempt to recognise positive profiles and postulates of each, so that we can imbibe their respective sterling qualities viz., Gandhi’s purity and perfection in personal life as also Godse’s profound patriotism and passion for motherland.
