DMK president M.K. Stalin has claimed that a “change” that took place in Tamil Nadu has now turned into a “disappointment”, alleging that a mistake made by lakhs of people was causing suffering to crores of people, as reported in Dinamalar.
Stalin made the remarks while speaking at a wedding function held at the residence of filmmaker Amirtham in Chennai.
Recalling his family relationship with Amirtham, Stalin said he was the son of his paternal aunt, and that Amirtham, along with his cousins Murasoli Maran and Selvam, had played a role in bringing up Stalin and his siblings.
Stalin also spoke about the educational achievements of Amirtham’s family and contrasted them with the educational opportunities available in Tamil Nadu today.
“About half a century ago, if there was a graduate or a doctor in a family, it would have been something very rare. You would find such educated people only in a few families,” Stalin said.
“Today, there are graduates and doctors in every town, every village and almost every household. No one should forget that the Dravidian movement is the reason for this,” he added.
Stalin said the younger generation should understand who was responsible for the social and educational changes that had taken place in Tamil Nadu.
“It is a marriage taking place in the family of someone who has followed the Dravidian movement. But the youth of today must understand and know who made this situation possible,” he said.
He then said the political situation in Tamil Nadu had taken a different turn.
“As Raja said, a change has taken place in Tamil Nadu and has turned into a disappointment. A mistake made by lakhs of people is causing suffering to crores of people today. This situation must change,” Stalin said.
He appealed to those present at the wedding to think carefully and act responsibly in the coming years.
“I sincerely request all of you gathered here to think carefully about the coming period and act in the best possible manner so that this situation changes,” he said.
Stalin also urged the newly married couple to give their future children Tamil names, pointing to the practice followed by his father and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
“I request the newlyweds to give beautiful Tamil names to the children you have in the future, just as Kalaignar gave Tamil names to all the children and grandchildren in his family,” he said.
He concluded by wishing the couple a life guided by the ideals expressed by poet Bharathidasan, saying they should “be a lamp to the home and serve the nation.”
