Muslim Family Attempt Self-Immolation Outside Tirunelveli Collector’s Office Over Property Dispute Involving Alleged Land Grabbing By DMK Functionary

In a dramatic and distressing turn of events, four individuals, including two women, attempted self-immolation outside the Tirunelveli District Collector’s Office on 29 November 2024, in protest over an ongoing property dispute with a DMK functionary.

The group, led by Nainar Mohammed from Thazhayuthu, arrived at the Collector’s office to submit a petition. However, as they stood outside the office, they suddenly pulled out a bottle of kerosene, poured it over themselves, and attempted to set themselves on fire.

In response, police officers stationed for security quickly intervened, confiscating the kerosene and matches from the individuals and dousing them with water. They were subsequently taken in for questioning.

During the inquiry, it was uncovered that one of the individuals, Nainar Mohammed from the Thazhayuthu area, was at the center of the incident. Nainar had entered into a contract worth ₹45 lakhs to purchase an old theater in Thazhayuthu. However, a DMK functionary figure who owned nearby land allegedly attempted to seize control of the theater property that Nainar had contracted for. Following this, Nainar Mohammed took legal action, and while the case remains pending, a court order was issued prohibiting both parties from claiming ownership or conducting any activities on the site.

On the morning of the incident, a group reportedly trespassed onto the theater property and began work. Distressed by this, Nainar, along with his daughter Jannat, daughter-in-law Aleema Begum, and a relative, went to the Tirunelveli District Superintendent of Police’s office to lodge a complaint. When they later attempted to report their grievances at the Collector’s office, Nainar tragically attempted to set himself on fire. The police then took all four individuals to the Palayamkottai police station for further interrogation.
