Army Personnel Protests At Ariyalur Collectorate Over Police Inaction In Family Assault Case, Gets Manhandled By Police

An Army personnel staged a protest at the Ariyalur Collectorate on 25 November 2024, criticizing the police for failing to take action against those who had assaulted his family members over a dispute. The police, in response, took him for questioning while he continued to chant slogans against their inaction.

The dispute reportedly began during the construction of a wall at the house of Ranjith Kumar, an Army personnel from Sripuranthan village in Ariyalur, and his uncle. On 20 September 2024, Ranjith Kumar’s cousins, Saranraj, a police constable at the Jayankondam DSP office, and his brother Sathyamurthy, allegedly attacked Ranjith Kumar’s father Varadarajan, as well as his brother and sister.

Ranjith Kumar, who hails from the northern region, sought to file a complaint with the Vikkiramangalam police, but it is claimed that his complaint was not registered. He then submitted a petition to the Ariyalur District Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP) seeking action, but no response was forthcoming.

On 25 November 2024, wearing his Army uniform, Ranjith Kumar arrived at the Ariyalur Collectorate and began his protest, demanding justice for his family and the safety of his loved ones. He also voiced strong criticism of the police. Upon receiving the information, the police officers present at the Collectorate manhandled Ranjith Kumar, causing a disturbance, despite him being in his respected Army uniform. Ranjith Kumar insisted that the Collector personally address his concerns. The police eventually took him to the station, but Ranjith Kumar refused to comply, continuing to argue with the officers. He was eventually escorted to the police control room for further inquiry.
