“Idhana Sir Unga Takku?”: ADMK Leader EPS Condemns DMK Govt Over 10-Month-Old News, BJP’s SG Suryah Points Out

Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary SG Suryah mocked AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition (LOP) Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) for a post he made on 10 October 2024, in which he urged the ruling DMK government to improve Chennai’s standing in the Swachh Survekshan national cleanliness rankings. However, the criticism arose because the Swachh Survekshan report for 2023 had already been released in January 2024, making his remarks outdated. This error prompted Suryah to criticize Palaniswami, advising him to be more responsible in his role as LOP.

In his statement, Palaniswami highlighted that Chennai’s cleanliness ranking had plummeted to 199 in 2023, down from 45 in 2020 and 43 in 2021 during the AIADMK’s tenure. He noted that the previous AIADMK government had implemented various initiatives that earned accolades from the Union government.

Furthermore, Palaniswami criticized the DMK administration for increasing property taxes and metro and sewerage charges, claiming that these actions have placed an additional burden on residents. He asserted that the city’s poor cleanliness ranking reflects the DMK government’s failure to address these issues.

EPS via his official X account stated that, “During the AIADMK regime, among the list of cleanest cities in India Chennai Corporation was at 45th in 2020; at the 43rd position in 2021. After Stalin came to power, he imposed various burdens on the people such as twice increase in property tax, increase in drinking water and sewage disposal fee, increase in garbage tax and did not carry out cleaning works according to the charges collected from the people. Due to that today Chennai Corporation has been ranked 199th in the All India survey this year as per the reports in newspapers and media.”

“The people are severely dissatisfied with the fact that the Chennai corporation is in a bad state, despite Stalin, who was already the mayor, Ma. Subramanian and the district ministers, the mayor and the elected councilors, are there  (wondering) is it a crime to vote for the DMK in the corporation elections. At least from now on, I insist that Stalin’s government should carry out cleanliness works, road maintenance works, provide regular drinking water, waste water disposal etc. and bring Chennai Corporation to the forefront in the list of clean cities.” He added.

In response, SG Suryah took to his official X account to state, “So Tamil Nadu Leader Of Opposition issues a statement for a 10 month old news. Worst is this is 2023 ranking & he quotes as 2024 rank. Please sack your research team @EPSTamilNadu sir. I had spoken about this & tweeted as well on 1st March 2024.”
