In a remarkable discovery, several ancient Panchaloha idols and other artifacts believed to be from the Chola era have been unearthed in Koilrayanpettai village near Papanasam in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. The historical finds were stumbled upon by Mohammed Faizal, a 43-year-old resident while digging a pit for the construction of his house.
More than 10 Panchaloha vigrahas are found while digging for a construction of a house, near Papanasam. This includes Somaskandha, Chandrasekarar, Thirugnanasambandar vigrahas. They are likely to be from a nearby temple and buried to protect them from invaders.

As they were excavating the third pit on his land, the people were astonished to uncover antique idols buried underground. Immediately recognizing the potential significance of the discovery, authorities were promptly informed.
Upon receiving the alert, officials from the archaeological department rushed to the site and found several Panchaloha (five-metal alloy) idols, including those of Somaskandar, Chandrasekharar, and Thirugnanasambandar, along with various other artifacts used for worship, such as incense burners, trays, and pedestals.

The officials have taken custody of the unearthed idols and other objects for safekeeping and further examination. Excavation work is currently underway at the site to investigate if more historical artifacts are buried in the area.
According to initial assessments, the idols and artifacts are believed to date back to the Chola period, which spanned from the 9th to the 13th century CE and is renowned for its remarkable artistic and architectural achievements.
