In a chilling indictment of the DMK government’s claim of maintaining law and order, a history-sheeter was brutally hacked to death inside Chennai’s Kilpauk Government Hospital in the early hours of Monday.
The deceased, Adikesavan alias Aadhi (20), a resident of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar in Kolathur, was a ‘B’ category rowdy listed in the Rajamangalam police station history sheet, with nine criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, intimidation and assault. He had been released from prison just 10 days ago after serving time for a 2022 murder case.
Police said Aadhi had come to Kilpauk Government Hospital after learning that the infant born to a woman with whom he had an illicit relationship had died. The woman, a 21-year-old from the Avadi lake area, had delivered a baby girl at the hospital on 18 January 2026, and the child reportedly died two days ago due to health complications.
After arriving at the hospital, Aadhi allegedly consumed alcohol with his friend Charumathi (23) of Villivakkam and later fell asleep in the corridor opposite the maternity ward.
At around 3.45 AM, three men wearing helmets arrived on two motorcycles, entered the hospital and attacked Aadhi with deadly weapons including sickles while he was sleeping. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Hospital staff rushed the critically injured Aadhi to the emergency ward, where doctors declared him dead.
Nine Special Teams, CCTV Footage Under Scanner
Following the murder, Kilpauk police registered a case and launched an intensive investigation. Nine special teams were formed to track down the assailants, and CCTV footage from inside and outside the hospital is being analysed.
Police have detained and questioned Surya, Alibhai, Karthik, as well as Aadhi’s girlfriend and her friend Charumathi. Investigators believe Surya is the boyfriend of Aadhi’s partner, and the other two men are his associates.
The police are probing whether the murder was triggered by a dispute over the woman or whether it was an act of revenge linked to a 2022 murder case in which Aadhi had been accused. Aadhi had reportedly been released from prison just 10 days ago after serving two years in that case.
How the Killers Entered With Weapons
Police said the attack appeared to be carefully planned. Kilpauk Government Hospital has 21 security guards, but only four were on duty in the maternity ward area at the time of the incident. With ambulances arriving frequently, guards were focused on clearing traffic and patient movement.
Large numbers of patient relatives were present, many carrying bags containing food, clothes and personal items. The attackers allegedly exploited this to smuggle weapons into the hospital without being detected, carry out the murder while most people were asleep, and escape on motorcycles waiting outside.
Police Personnel to Face Action
Additional Commissioner of Police Narendra Nair, who inspected the crime scene, said two suspects have been arrested and four others are being interrogated.
He stated that preliminary findings indicate the murder was likely a revenge killing, given Aadhi’s criminal history and involvement in previous murders.
Nair also announced departmental action against ten police personnel who were deployed at the hospital that night, stating that they had failed to act with the required urgency despite the presence of a known criminal inside the premises.
