Local residents, devotees and Hindu organizations have strongly objected to the use of a dormitory, intended for pilgrims on the Palani Padayatra, of the Palani temple, for a political meeting organized by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The event took place in Reddyarchatram, Dindigul district.
The dormitory, constructed and maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department using donations from pilgrims and devotees, is traditionally used by those undertaking religious foot pilgrimages to the Palani temple. The presence of MP Sachchidanandam at the DYFI event further fueled criticism from religious groups.
Hindu organizations have expressed outrage, arguing that it is inappropriate for a space meant for religious pilgrims to be used for political purposes. They are demanding accountability and disciplinary action against those responsible for granting permission for the event.
Legal Action Threatened
Rama Ravi Kumar State General Secretary Of Hindu Makkal Katchi, questioned the decision of the HR&CE Department and the Palani Temple administration in allowing a group associated with communist ideology which historically opposes religion to hold a meeting in a religious facility built with devotee contributions.
He asked, “On what grounds was permission granted to an organization that views religion as ‘opium’? Will similar access be given to other political parties?” He further criticized the Palani Temple Joint Commissioner, questioning whether the official was acting under political pressure from ruling coalition parties.
Rama ravi kumar demanded transparency, “Who authorized the use of the premises? If formal approval was given, release the documentation. If not, legal steps should be taken against those who acted without authority. If necessary, we will file a case in court and submit evidence to seek justice.”
VHP Condemns Event
Senthil Kumar, the Tamil Nadu state coordinator for Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) temple and monastery division, also condemned the event. He asserted that allowing a political party to use a facility funded by devotees is not only inappropriate but undermines the religious sanctity of the space. He called for immediate action against the officials involved.
Authorities Respond
The Palani Temple administration, including the Joint Commissioner, did not provide a response to inquiries regarding the issue. However, Dindigul District Collector Saravanan acknowledged that the premises in question fall under the authority of the Charitable Trusts Department. He added, “I will look into the matter and consult with the relevant officials.”
