As the interim budget session commenced in Parliament, the political atmosphere intensified with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, prompting everyone to assert themselves for electoral victory. Against this backdrop, a heated confrontation unfolded between the DMK and BJP, as DMK MPs raised inquiries about the measures taken by the central government to aid Tamil Nadu in its post-flood reconstruction efforts in the Question Hour of the parliament.
DMK MPs A Raja and A Ganeshmurthy inquired whether the government had dispatched a Central team to assess the damages caused by heavy rainfall, and flooding in Chennai and its suburbs, and South Tamil Nadu in December. During the Question Hour, DMK MP Baalu raised a supplementary question, prompting Murugan, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, to label it as ‘irrelevant.’
This led to a heated exchange, with Baalu expressing dissatisfaction and asserting that Murugan was unfit for his roles as both a Member of Parliament and a minister.
Enraged, Baalu vehemently exclaimed, “Why do you interfere, please sit down…You don’t know anything…please sit down, please sit down… What do you want… Sir, please intervene. He should know some discipline, you are unfit to be a member of Parliament, you are unfit to be a minister also. You don’t have any guts to face us, we will teach you.“
The BJP responded strongly, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi challenging Baalu’s characterization of Murugan as ‘unfit’. “How can you call him unfit? you cannot call a minister and a member as unfit… It is unfair that you are a senior member how can you call him unfit?.“
The chaos began with members shouting and chanting slogans as the BJP labeled the DMK government and the Congress as unfit.
As Baalu declined to offer an apology, Speaker Om Birla removed the term from the official records, resulting in a walkout by DMK, Congress, and their allies. As he exited Parliament, he conveyed to ANI that his characterization of Union Minister L Murugan as ‘unfit’ was not deemed unparliamentary.

Critiquing the DMK MP, Murugan expressed to ANI, “DMK is unable to tolerate that a minister from a downtrodden community is a minister. This is why he used a derogatory and unparliamentary word to insult my community and me.” stated the minister.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai swiftly released an official statement on his X handle condemning TR Baalu, “Thiru TR Balu is a disgrace to politics & this is not the first time he has made disgraceful remarks about a member of the Scheduled Caste Community. I strongly condemn these remarks on Hon MoS Thiru @Murugan_MoS avl in the Temple of Democracy. Our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl is a true champion of Social Justice & has made a member of the Arundhathiyar community a Minister, which DMK could never despite being in the Central govt for decades”. he added
“Hon MoS Thiru @Murugan_MoS avl’s unwavering commitment to serving the people & his dedication to bringing a positive difference as a Minister of State has surely irked DMK MPs. Only an arrogant man like Thiru TR Baalu can term a member of parliament & a Minister from the SC community as “Unfit” & Thiru TR Baalu has to render an unconditional apology to the people of the SC community for calling their representative “Unfit”.” he further added.
