The DMK has launched a sharp attack on Tamil Nadu Congress president Manickam Tagore amid the escalating dispute over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, accusing Congress leaders of betraying the alliance for the sake of a Cabinet berth.
The DMK has declared that it will not join the Congress-led Opposition protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi, claiming that it has exited the I.N.D.I.A bloc after Congress allegedly betrayed the alliance for the sake of a Cabinet berth.
In a lengthy statement published on its official X account on 12 October 2026, the DMK said it would not participate in the Congress-led protest in Delhi demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party also accused Tagore of defending the Election Commission’s SIR exercise, destabilising the anti-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu, and targeting the DMK while remaining silent about Chief Minister Vijay’s position on SIR.
The statement came after Tagore questioned why DMK MPs had not joined the Delhi protest and accused the party of inconsistency over SIR.
DMK Accuses Tagore of Defending SIR
The DMK began its statement with a warning directed at Tagore, saying that the Congress leader should “keep his mouth in check” when speaking about a party that is no longer part of his alliance, adding that otherwise “it will be checked.”
Calling Tagore a “TVK slave,” the DMK accused him of once again displaying his arrogance through his remarks, which it said had already damaged the strong anti-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu before the Assembly election.
The party said Tagore had taken remarks made at a meeting of DMK booth-level agents out of context. According to the DMK, the remarks were intended to recognise and encourage party workers for their efforts on the ground, but Tagore had used them to defend what it called the Election Commission’s biased and dishonest SIR exercise.
The DMK asked whether the Congress national leadership agreed with Tagore’s position and whether opposing SIR was also the party’s national position.
It maintained that DMK workers had done everything possible to prevent people from losing their voting rights during SIR, helping voters fill out and submit the required forms. However, it said, many names were still missing from both the draft and final electoral rolls.
The statement accused Tagore of trying to conceal what it described as a widely known fact: that voters’ names had been left out of the electoral rolls despite these efforts.
DMK Blames Congress Leaders for Its Election Defeat
The DMK acknowledged that SIR was not the only factor behind its defeat in the Assembly election.
It also blamed remarks made by certain Congress leaders, including Manickam Tagore, Girish Chodankar and Praveen Chakravarty, while the Congress remained part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance.
The DMK alleged that their statements had repeatedly put the alliance’s reputation and unity under public scrutiny. It accused these leaders of functioning as “sleeper cells” of another party while remaining members of both the Congress and the DMK-led alliance.
According to the statement, their conduct undermined the work of Congress members who had genuinely campaigned for the alliance’s victory.
The DMK described these leaders as “rotten corpses” whose burden it had been forced to carry, claiming that this had contributed to the decline in its vote share.
It added that, after throwing off this burden, public support for the DMK had increased several times over and party workers had regained their confidence. The party cited the recent by-election results in support of its claim.
DMK Questions Congress’s Record on SIR Protests
Responding to Tagore’s question about the absence of DMK MPs from the Delhi protest demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s removal, the DMK asked what qualifications Tagore had to raise the issue.
The party said its MPs had protested to demand the release of young people arrested by the TVK government for demonstrating against SIR in Tamil Nadu. It then asked what Congress had done at the time.
The DMK also accused Congress leaders of drinking coffee with Chief Minister Vijay while the arrests were taking place, asking whether they were in a position to lecture the DMK about its conduct.
The party said DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was the first leader from Tamil Nadu to issue a statement demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s removal after The Indian Express published an article about alleged irregularities in the Election Commission.
It added that Stalin had continued to speak openly about the issue during by-election campaigning and that DMK MPs had signed a notice submitted by opposition parties in April seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.
The DMK also pointed to Stalin’s statements condemning the crackdown on protesters in Delhi, saying that several opposition groups had shared and welcomed his criticism.
It rejected Tagore’s allegation that the DMK was afraid of antagonising the BJP by joining the anti-SIR protest, declaring that the party was not afraid of anyone.
The statement cited Stalin’s protest against the delimitation Bill, during which he wore black and burned a copy of the Bill while campaigning was underway, as evidence of the DMK’s opposition to the BJP.
DMK Declares Exit From INDIA Bloc
The DMK explicitly stated that it had left the INDIA bloc following what it described as the Congress’s betrayal of the party for the sake of a Cabinet position.
“Following the betrayal committed against the DMK by Congress infiltrators who acted against alliance dharma for the sake of a ministerial post, we have exited the INDIA alliance,” the statement said.
It added that the DMK, no longer part of the INDIA bloc, had no obligation to join protests organised by the Congress and that the Congress had no right to compel it to participate.
“In future, our path is our own path,” the party declared.
The DMK also accused Tagore of failing to question Vijay about why the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had not joined the protest or spoken out against SIR, Gyanesh Kumar, the BJP or Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Calling Vijay a leader who was afraid to speak out, the DMK said Tagore had no moral standing to lecture it about opposition to the BJP.
DMK Targets Vijay, Accuses Tagore of Pressing His Feet
The statement repeatedly turned its attention to Vijay, questioning why he had remained silent on SIR and Gyanesh Kumar despite the Congress being part of the TVK-led government’s alliance.
The DMK referred to Vijay’s earlier political rhetoric about “fascism” and “payasam,” asking why he had yet to speak on SIR or the Chief Election Commissioner.
It also asked whether Vijay was part of the Congress alliance and why Tagore lacked the courage to question him.
The DMK claimed that some Congress MPs with self-respect had already questioned Vijay’s silence and his government’s handling of protests in Tamil Nadu.
It accused Tagore, however, of kneeling at the feet of the “Panaiyur landlord” — a reference to Vijay — while directing his attacks at the DMK.
The statement used an even sharper insult against Tagore, accusing him of “washing and drinking the feet” of Vijay, while describing Congress leaders who attacked the DMK as leeches living off the work of others.
The DMK said it did not need lessons from these leaders on opposing the BJP, pointing to the alliance it had built in Tamil Nadu and its claimed clean sweep in the previous two Lok Sabha elections.
It ended with a warning to Tagore and other Congress leaders not to continue attacking the DMK for the sake of the “biscuits” handed out by TVK, adding that they would have to face the consequences if the alleged slander continued.
