The Joseph Vijay led TVK government has announced that it will identify government land and take steps to provide house sites to journalists, raising questions over the rationale behind offering a direct material benefit to members of the media who are expected to scrutinise the government.
Revenue Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said the issue had been discussed with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who had also shown interest in the proposal.
“We have discussed this with the Chief Minister. He has also shown interest in it. Therefore, the government will identify places where government land is available and take steps to provide them to journalists,” Sengottaiyan said.

Providing subsidised housing and house sites to journalists is not a new practice in Tamil Nadu. Successive governments, including DMK and AIADMK administrations, have introduced housing schemes, preferential allotments and other welfare measures for journalists over the years.
However, the latest announcement comes with a potential conflict-of-interest question: why should journalists, whose professional responsibility includes holding the government accountable, be direct beneficiaries of government-distributed land?
Unlike pensions or welfare assistance based on economic hardship, allotting government land specifically to journalists creates a direct relationship between the government and a professional group responsible for reporting on its policies and functioning.
The announcement also comes at a time when the new TVK government is seeking to establish its political image and communicate its achievements through frequent scheme and policy announcements.
The proposal raises an obvious question: is this a genuine welfare measure for journalists, or does giving government-controlled land to the media create an incentive for favourable coverage, given the fact that earlier governments enjoyed the support of government employees who benefitted immensely from them?
