At an event where Kerala’s Grand Mufti Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar spoke about women remaining at home, Islamic scholar A.P. Abdul Hakim Ansari reportedly said that having three children is a “ticket to heaven” for Muslim women.
Ansari also said women need not work outside the home because their financial responsibility rests with men in the family.
Speaking at the event, he said, “Women are not to be dismissed with contempt, they are half of this society, women are the ones who grow this society. The great message given by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to the world is that women are the ones who raise it. Therefore, women live with pride. Childcare and childbirth are only possible for women. No matter how much right they claim, men cannot do it. It is a great deed. Carrying a pregnancy for months and giving birth with difficulty is said to be difficult. Today, there is no difficult birth. Today, 42 percent of cesarean sections are performed in our country. Painless childbirth is done by giving anesthesia. In cases of painful childbirth and normal childbirth by giving anesthesia, a method has emerged here. When the maternity department was started in the Mehraz hospital, here is how many births took place within two weeks. Less than 10 percent actually required a cesarean section. The first woman who came to give birth was in pain and begged the doctor to do something about it. The doctor asks shall I give you an injection?, What injection? That is anesthesia. and the woman gives birth right before it is administered.Then, the idea that a cesarean section is enough for childbirth is taught.”
He continued, “By teaching the society an idea that why should women suffer in childbirth, we have reached a situation where the new generation of young women are not ready to experience the pain of childbirth. You are the birth workers. By saying that, this society portrayed them as bad people, so we are going to experience the tragedy of the new generation coming to the idea that one child is enough, two is enough. This is what is being experienced in countries where this has been made mandatory. Countries like China, Korea, and Russia are experiencing it. India is also going to experience it. Although India has not made it mandatory, due to these propaganda of these neo-liberalists, rationalists, and such people, the new generation has been brainwashed, so the number of births is decreasing, which is the cause of the destruction of our country, society, and the world. Holy Islam has declared a great contribution to women who give birth. If they give birth to three children, the mother will receive heaven for that reason.”
He further said, “The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that the mother is in heaven. Therefore, a woman who is in labor pains has been given a great right. You do not have to go out and sweat. Your entire responsibility can only be taken by a man. If not a husband or father, then children have the responsibility. Saying that women should have taken on the responsibility of giving birth to children, the greatest right given to women, would anyone say that we can also do a little bit of that because they are carrying out the greatest responsibility of giving birth to children in this society? That is not possible in this nature. So, great importance was given to such a birth and a large salary was paid to them. They were paid to raise children. Thus, women were given all rights.”
Ansari said that a woman’s financial responsibility could be taken by her husband, father or children, while placing childbirth and motherhood at the centre of his description of women’s role in society.

The remarks came at the same event where Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar had spoken against women’s participation in public life.
“Women should remain confined within their homes. They should not enter the public sphere. The Holy Quran says so,” Kanthapuram had said.
He defended the purdah system, saying it was intended to protect women’s honour and dignity, and compared women to gold ornaments that need to be kept safely inside a box, as reported in OpIndia.
“If the necklace has to retain its beauty, it has to be kept safely inside a box,” Kanthapuram said, arguing that bringing women into the public sphere could lead to “great destruction.”
Kanthapuram maintained that the restrictions were intended to honour and protect women rather than diminish them. He also said Sunni scholars had propagated the position for around a century and claimed it had helped women maintain their dignity.
His remarks received support from Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat. Bareilvi said Kanthapuram’s statements regarding women were “absolutely correct” in the light of Sharia and claimed they had been misunderstood.
Bareilvi said women’s honour and dignity were best preserved by remaining at home, while also maintaining that Sharia does not prevent Muslim women from working in offices while observing hijab.
