TN Governor Social Media Handle Praises Racist Bigot Poet Bharathidasan

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of poet Bharathidasan, the official social media handle of Tamil Nadu Governor tweeted wishes praising him for his ‘progressive literary works’.

Bharathidasan, is a famous Tamil literary personality known for his fiery writings. Born as Kanaka Subburathinam in a Senkuntha Mudaliyar family, he was inspired by the revolutionary Indian nationalist poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharathi and rechristened himself as “Bharathi Dasan”, meaning a ‘servant of Bharathi’.

Despite being mentored by Subramania Bharathi, Subburathinam held immense animosity towards the Tamil Brahmin community.

Many of his works peddle genocidal hatred towards Brahmins exposing the racist bigot and demagogue in him.

Here’s a poem expressing his hatred for the Brahmin community

The poem is translated as follows:

Don’t submit to Brahmins!

Don’t submit to his words !!

A Brahmin will always try to light a fire!

The Brahmin will ruin things. Always he will do this !!

He will shout as if he is interested in our welfare !!

The Brahmin will try to eat the same person who seeks him !!

The solemn debt of Tamils (read as NonBrahmins) is to destroy the Tamizh Brahmins !!

If even one word he utters against Tamils greatness, on the Brahmin Spit !!

This Bharathidasan hate poem is found in the chapter ‘Maanavar (For Student)’ of the book “Tamil Iyakkam (Tamil Movement).”  

Bharathidasan wrote another anti-Brahmin play, “Hiranyakashipu, The Matchless Hero,” which was performed in front of another rabid anti-Brahmin speaker, EV Ramasamy Naicker, on 9 September 1934 in VP Hall in Chennai. The play has nothing to do with Hiranyakashipu Prahaladan or Narasimha Avataram. The play only spreads vile narratives about Tamil Brahmins portraying them as a community who use their women to engage in sexual seduction techniques.

The account of the Narasimha avatar is one of the most philosophically profound in all of Hindu literature. The story of the supreme Lord manifesting as a half-lion half-man to end the tyranny of the narcissistic King Hiranyakashipu is told in Narasimha Avatar.

Bharathidasan claimed in the play that Chitrabanu, an Arya Brahmin, used her beauty and sweet talks to make Prince Prahalathan fall in love with her. He went on to say that the Brahmin woman had seduced Prahalathan into marrying her. However, the Dravidian Stockist purposefully concealed Prahalathan’s age of 5 years. The play includes a dance to this song in the act where Prahalathan’s secret marriage with Chitrabanu takes place.

The song says, “to spread the web of sexual seduction is our bravery,” and “after drinking the soma rasa – there are no relations.” This is a way to plant a stereotype of the Aryan (referring to Tamizh Brahmins) as a promiscuous drunken rave community that uses their women to satiate their aspirations.

In another place, Bharathidasan describes Brahmins as, “those who have grabbed and stolen and fattened themselves.”

“These dogs who are sticking to the nation and sucking and blooming.. these dogs.. take a sword and chop off their two arms.”, he had written.

In the same act, a Dravidian minister says how to go about dealing with the Aryan Brahmin threat. He says, “At this very moment, we need to eradicate to the root of Aryans from this land.”

The play attacks Aryans (proxy for Tamizh Brahmins) as eunuchs without male parts, ‘fox crowd’. It says, “Without manhood.. you were born in Aryan Fox Group. You .. Scheming foxes.. eunuchs.. using your cunningness you are trying to bring the entire world under your control”

Bharathidasan also described Aryans/Brahmins as perverts who enjoy copulating with women in groups.

In another episode, during Chitrabanu’s (Brahmin woman) interaction with commander, she seduces him with hugs and offers another kiss.

During her most desperate moments, she even declares her temporary vow of abstinence to be broken.

It is worth noting that the government banned both the play and the book in 1948. However, the ban was lifted when the DMK came to power in 1967.

It is this Bharathidasan whom the Hon’ble Governor’s office has hailed as a ‘progressive’ literary personality.

All these hate literature produced by Bharathidasan, though widely known among the Tamil community, is not spoken about much except in the Dravidian Stock circles. He has today been exalted to a ‘rationalist’ just like how EVR has been eulogized.

It is pertinent for the Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Governor to take cognizance of the hate peddled by Bharathidasan before paying respects to him.
