A dispute has erupted at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Thirupparankundram, Madurai, over the reported denial of permission to cook and distribute kadamba sadam (a traditional mixed rice preparation) on the hill as part of the annual Vel edukkum festival, as reported in Daily Thanthi.
The controversy arose ahead of the festival scheduled to take place today at the Kasi Viswanathar Temple situated atop the Thirupparankundram hill. Devotees have traditionally prepared kadamba sadam and distributed it during the occasion, a practice that has reportedly been followed for several years.
According to reports, permission was sought to prepare the traditional offering on the hill this year as well. However, the Archaeology Department reportedly refused permission to cook food at the site and imposed seven conditions in connection with the activity.
The reported restrictions have raised concerns over the continuation of the traditional practice during this year’s festival.
Argument Erupts Outside Temple
Following the reported denial of permission, members of the public engaged in a heated argument outside the temple entrance, creating tension in the area.
The dispute centres on the permission to prepare kadamba sadam on the hill and distribute it to devotees during the annual Vel edukkum festival.
Meanwhile, a request seeking permission to cook food on the hill has reportedly been raised before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
