The Wire columnist and Pinjra Tod ‘activists’ booked for inciting Delhi riots

Natasha Narwal and Devangna Kalita, two women belonging to Pinjra Tod, the former being a columnist with The Wire have been arrested for inciting riots in north-east Delhi in February of this year.

It was found that on February 22, the Pinjra Tod group had mobilised local residents to gang up near Jaffrabad metro station to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. It is said that Pinjra Tod activists were present in the Seelampur-Jafrabad area and instigated the anti-CAA protesters at the dharna site and other nearby areas to make their protests ‘more impactful’ by creating a roadblock at the Jafrabad Metro station road.

Earlier the Delhi Police had sent notice to 50 members of the Jamia Coordination Committee, former office bearers of National Student Union of India (Congress’ student arm), and the far-left group Pinjra Tod for their involvement in the riots that claimed 53 people leaving several injured.

Both Natasha and Devangna are the founding members of the Pinjra Tod group, established in 2015 to oppose hostel curfews at Delhi’s colleges. Natasha Narwal had written articles for the mischievous online news portal The Wire.

Natasha is known for selectively targeting and manufacturing opinions on Hindu women’s place in society.

Earlier another columnist with The Wire, Sharjeel Imam, a vocal sympathizer of Jinnah’s communalism, who during the anti-CAA protests had called for cutting Assam and north-east from rest of India was arrested by the Delhi Police for his involvement in the riots.
