Tamil Nadu: Govt school teachers in Tiruvannamalai prohibit students from donning Hindu identities

The incident where teachers from Vandhavasi High School have warned students against wearing Rudhrakshas, has angered the students’ parents in Tiruvannamalai. Such incidents, where people are intolerant towards those who carry Hindu religious identities, are on the rise in Tamil Nadu in recent times.

In Tiruvannamalai’s Vandhavasi, a High school is situated in Neyyaru. With an inner intent, two teachers of the school has issued a warning to the students against wearing Rudrakshas when attending school. As soon as Hindu Munnani district Secretary, Aarumugam came to know of this incident, he took the students’ parents to the school and enquired with the students if such a warning was issued  by the teachers. He then complained to the Headmaster regarding this incident. He then also filed a complaint with the Assistant Police Superitendent, requesting him to take action against the two teachers.

Last week, an intolerant teacher prohibited a student from smearing holy ashes (Vibuthi) on her forehead in Surandai, Tenkasi district. When the parents of the girl have raised this incident as a complaint to the headmaster of the school, the headmaster allegedly morphed a photo of the girl and threatened her parents to misuse it. This incident had created panic in the Tenkasi area.

In another incident that happened in October 2021, a teacher at a government-aided Christian school in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu reportedly harassed and thrashed two students for wearing Hindu symbols like rudraksh and vibhudhi (sacred ash).
