Poor Women Under 100-Day Employment Scheme Reportedly Being Targeted By Missionaries For Conversion In TN

Videos showing women workers engaged under Tamil Nadu’s rural employment scheme being subjected to Christian religious conversion have surfaced on social media, triggering concern and calls for government action.

The videos, which are currently circulating online, allegedly show women workers being approached for religious conversion during or around their participation in the rural employment programme. The authenticity, location and circumstances surrounding the videos, however, would need to be independently verified by the authorities.

The allegations have drawn attention because a significant section of workers dependent on the rural employment scheme comes from economically vulnerable households. The Union government’s employment scheme describes the programme as being intended to strengthen the livelihood security of rural households, particularly vulnerable sections of rural society.

The scheme has a substantial presence in Tamil Nadu, with official data recording millions of active workers in the state.

Those raising concerns over the videos allege that the economic vulnerability of rural women is being exploited to influence their religious beliefs. Questions have also been raised over whether such activities are taking place around employment worksites and whether any inducements or promises are being offered in the process.

The allegations have further fuelled concerns about the potential impact of organised religious activities on village communities, particularly if workers are being approached collectively at or near government employment worksites.

The issue assumes added significance under the government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, which has repeatedly projected itself as being committed to treating people of all religions equally. Critics are now asking whether the state government is adequately monitoring allegations of religious conversion involving economically vulnerable rural workers and whether complaints, if formally made, are being investigated.
