A 35-year-old police constable has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a young woman during a routine patrol in the Vellakinaru area. The accused, identified as Vinothkumar, was attached to the Thudiyalur police station, as reported in Daily Thanthi.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on July 15 when Vinothkumar and his colleagues were on patrol near the Housing Board Phase II arch. They intercepted a 23-year-old woman who was standing with her male friend and detained both for questioning. During the inquiry, Vinothkumar reportedly separated the woman from her companion, took her to a secluded spot, and subjected her to sexual harassment.
Distressed by the ordeal, the woman rushed back to her friend in tears and narrated what had happened. Her friend immediately approached senior police officials and lodged a formal complaint. Based on the complaint, a case was registered against Vinothkumar at the Thudiyalur police station under four sections of the law, including relevant provisions of the Act against the harassment of women.
The constable was arrested on July 19. In addition to the criminal case, police authorities have confirmed that departmental proceedings have been initiated against the other personnel who were part of the patrol team that day for their failure to intervene or report the misconduct.
Further investigation is underway.
