As many as 40 students of a government middle school near Tiruvallur developed vomiting and dizziness after consuming breakfast in which a lizard was reportedly found on Thursday morning. The students were admitted to the Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital, where 18 of them who had consumed the entire meal are receiving intensive treatment, as reported in DinaMani.
The incident took place at the Government Middle School in Kottaiyur, under Kadambathur Panchayat Union in Tiruvallur district. The school has 54 students.
At around 8.30 am, wheat rava kichadi and sambar were served to the students as part of the morning breakfast programme. While eating, the students reportedly noticed a lizard in the rava kichadi and were shocked.
Following the incident, 40 students who had consumed the breakfast developed vomiting and dizziness. They were subsequently taken to the Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital in three emergency vehicles.

Of the 40 students admitted, 18 who had consumed the entire meal are undergoing intensive treatment, while the remaining students are also receiving medical care.
Tiruvallur District Collector S. Kavitha visited the government medical college hospital after learning about the incident and interacted with the students. She assured them that there was no need to panic and consoled them.
Speaking to reporters, Kavitha said that the students were currently in good health and urged parents not to worry.
She said that an investigation had found negligence on the part of the cook to be the reason for the incident. She also said that school teachers had been instructed to inspect the food while it was being prepared.
“We have sent officials from the Food Safety Department to conduct an inspection. We have also instructed that samples of the cooked food be preserved, and the samples will be examined,” she said.
Medical College Hospital Dean G. Balaji, education department officials and doctors were also present during the Collector’s visit.
